When you're multi-booting (more than one OS per system, as opposed to dual
booting, which is exactly two operating systems per system), it's nuts to do
it any other way. Putting Grub on the MBR is license for Windows to drive you
even more nuts than normal.

You don't need to bother with grub4dos. dd can make a copy of your root or
boot partition's partition boot sector as a file. Copy that file to the
Windows boot partition (C:\), put a stanza for it in boot.ini, and ntldr will
offer it to you in its menu. http://fm.no-ip.com/install-doz-after.html

Disks typically vary in speed according to physical sector position on disk.
Usually the lowest numbered sectors perform best. The tail of the disk is
usually the worst place for swap. If Linux performance matters to you, don't
put Windows at the front if you can help it either. C: can be the 2nd, 3rd or
4th primary if you take the trouble to make it so, usually easiest by doing
100% of your ultimate partitioning in advance of any OS installs.

> Notice, no sda3 or sda4.

All that means is there are only 2 primary partitions on the disk. XdX1-XdX4
are always reserved for primaries, no matter how many actually exist. The
first logical is always #5, though the primary starting at the front of the
disk isn't necessarily always #1.

Installer shouldn't be able to install grub on ntfs partitions

2009-10-18 Thread Alan Searchwell

I always use the advanced options in the installer to install grub to the root
partition of the distro I'm installing. Since I'm dual booting with windows, I
then use grub4dos to boot into linux. This gives me a quick and easy method to
restore the ability to boot linux after a Windows re-install since all that is
required to set up grub4dos is to copy a file (grldr) to the Windows boot
partition and edit Windows startup menus to launch that file.

Today I did an installation that had a weird partition table. The entries  were:

/dev/sda1   *   1    1275    10241406    7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2    1276    7476    49809532+   f  W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5    1276    6024    38146311    7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6    6025    7269    1431   83  Linux
/dev/sda7    7270    7476 1662696   82  Linux swap / Solaris

Notice, no sda3 or sda4. When I chose the advanced options during install, I
was given the option of installing grub to sda, sda1 (Microsoft Windows XP
Professional), sda5 or sda6. Since I was expecting the Linux partition to be
sda4, I got confused and thought that sda6 must be the swap partition (dumb me)
so I installed grub to sda5. This has made my NTFS partition inaccessible with
no easy way to correct this mistake.

The installer is smart enough to know that grub can't be installed to swap
space so, the swap partition is not offered as an option for installing grub.
From today's experience NTFS partitions are not suitable for installing grub so
they should not be offered as options either.  IMHO Ubuntu's installer does a
fine job of saving users from themselves and this little extra check would take
that protection one step further.

I have the option in Karmic's Gnome, for USB sticks and other USB mass
storage devices like hard disks.

I can rightclick -> Format, and choose a few file systems there. The
dialog also lets me launch the full disk "Palimpsest" utility (same as
System Administration -> Disk Utility).

Palimpsest belongs to the package gnome-disk-utility, which is depended
on by ubuntu-desktop and thus installed by default.

And rightly so. Could you check if you have ubuntu-desktop installed?

I think we can use gnome-format and integrate it with Nautilus using
nautilus script.
If you don't know gnome-format, you can install it from APT. It's
available in universe repository.

In the case of kernel bugs, I think that would improve the chances of a fix
being found and included in time for release. Still, the biggest obstacle
here is not having a known patch to fix this bug - as you can see from the
handling of this particular bug, the Ubuntu kernel developers don't have the
resources to track down all such upstream fixes themselves, so the best way
to help get a bug like this fixed is if you can help identify the upstream
commit that fixes the bug.

google-gadgets-* outdated

2009-10-18 Thread bluefox83
The current version of google-gadgets in the karmic repo is severely
outdated and has severe issues. Will not load on many systems. Google
Gadgets forum suggests that the version in the repository be updated to
the latest available.

I have not been able to compile google gadgets from source on my own for
some reason, despite having all the required packages. It would be great
if the version in the Karmic repository was up to date before 9.10 goes
stable.

Thank you very much for your time! You're doing a great job :)

Universe wish: wormux from Debian testing

2009-10-18 Thread ilf
Since Universe can continue uploads, i *really* would like to see the
package wormux updated.

Currently it's 0.8.3-1build1 from Debians 0.8.3-1.
Debian released 0.8.5-1 on Sep 30, and it's in testing already.

Could the maintainers please update these newer packages to universe?
The 0.8.4 and 0.8.5 releases each fixed lots of bugs.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Priority is given to bugs that are regressions relative to previous
releases, bugs that severely impact the usability of the system (such as
data loss bugs and random crashes), and bugs that prevent delivery of key
new features for the cycle as determined at the preceding Ubuntu Developer
Summit.

Bug #203819 is not a candidate for being treated as release critical for
several reasons:

 - it is not a regression compared with preceding releases; the bug is
reported to affect all releases since 8.04 LTS
 - the kernel in particular must be frozen some time in advance of the
release, in order to settle other components that build on it; there is
no more room in the schedule for further kernel uploads before now and
   release (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelFreeze)
 - knowing that a newer upstream kernel fixes this only gets us partway to a
fix for the current Ubuntu release, someone still needs to identify the
change (or changes) that fixed the bug and backport them to the kernel
we're using. Even if it were possible to upload the kernel right up
until the last day before release, this is unlikely to get done in time.

Sorry, it's not possible to fix all bugs in a release, including those that
prevent users from being able to use some of their hardware with Ubuntu. I
encourage you to stick with this bug and make sure it gets fixed and stays
fixed in the next release.

usb stick

2009-10-18 Thread Hein Hanssen
Hello,

When using USB memory sticks, I would expect to have an right click menu
showing a format option. This is not the case (well, at least on the
Gnome desktop, I don't know about KDE).

Right now, the only (graphical) way of formatting USB memory sticks is
by using Gparted. Sure, it offers you optional file systems.

But, every user expects to have an easy way of formatting, just a

pdt is not in the archive. I think it's too late to get a new package in
the archive. Someone needs to package it. Currently we are working on
cdt and after that we will work on getting eclipse into Debian. We have
pdt on the to do list, so this plug-in will probably be available in
lucid.

eclipse packages in karmic

2009-10-18 Thread Benjamin Drung
Hi,

we have now an up-to-date, working eclipse package in karmic
(3.5.1-0ubuntu6). It's even better than the one provided by upstream.

There is only one problem left: Currently all plug-ins are very old and
do not work. All plug-ins needs an update. I am aware of two plug-ins:
eclipse-pydev
eclipse-cdt

We have removed eclipse-pydev from the archive, because of missing time.
So only eclipse-cdt remains. Currently we are working on packaging cdt
6.0.1. It needs eclipse-emf, eclipse-mylyn, and eclipse-rse (all not in
the archive).

Do we get an feature freeze exception for all these packages?
