Preload

2010-06-14 Thread Rovanion Luckey
Good day

I have the tingling sensation that this topic has already been up to
discussion, but I'm going to bring it up anyways.
Preload is a daemon that monitors what applications the user runs and
by analysing that data it prefetches the most used data into the RAM so to
decrease the time needed to launch these applications to which the data
belongs. This is a package that I always install on a fresh Ubuntu box
because it makes it faster, quite simply.

So here comes my fairly predictable question: Is there any chance that this
package can become one of the default packages in an Ubuntu installation. If
not, then why not?

dpkg -l "baz*"

not good enough for you?

For more robust syntax use dpkg-query

I use aptitude primarily for aptitude search. It shows which packages
are or are not installed, deleted etc., which apt-cache search doesn't.

Is there a better way of getting this information without aptitude
(and without firing up a gui program)? Certainly aptitude isn't
perfect (like the way it truncates lines at the display width even
if stdout isn't a terminal), but getting the same information with
other programs seems like it requires scripting or at least a fairly
long shell pipeline.

I would not have thought this is a major enough conference for us to
worry about? It's not one that we generally have a mass presence at,
for example.

There will always be conflicts at any date.

We're making a small step towards this in Maverick, with the ability for
application developers to submit packages for an Ubuntu version after
that version has been released.

Thanks for your comments mate. I never claimed that dpkg and gdebi done any
more than just that. I was simply pointing out that in addition to apt-get's
functions, there really is nothing that aptitude can technically do that
can't be done already with other built-in tools.

But as pointed out already, it seems my wish has come true. Aptitude will be
included only by default in Server Edition of Maverick.

Regards
