Re: Linux Desktop Responsiveness Patches

2010-08-06 Thread Chris Jones
Looks interesting indeed. The topic is also on the Fedora Dev Mailing
List. So it seems to be getting a bit of attention across the tux
community. Definitely a good thing.
I can't see it getting backported to 2.6.32 kernel though. But I hope
it does. But when I think about it, perhaps it will considering lucid
is a LTS release and all.

Regards

The package in Debian can build directly in Ubuntu and works well. I
am wondering if we don't really need a merge because I found there are
some code in the previous patches already in mainstream and the
package works well in our desktop. Also, I am sure there are issues
about indicator support open on upstream issue tracker.

What we are using from PPA (ppa:shawn-p-huang/ppa) is mostly build the
package directly from source without any change, package in Debian
adds the first of three patches ship in Ubuntu that adds the
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=ibus domain in .desktop file.

The other two are about appindicator and show_menuitem which are
somehow not easy for people who are not familiar with indicator-* to
do the merge. ibus changes rapidly and indicator-* has changed, too.

True. We could replace it by "Ubuntu updates" (or "Debian updates" if we're
running under Debian)

The only reason I did this is because we don't know the exact number of
other archives (usually, we should see 4 items for Ubuntu archives, the ones
I put in the mockup).

Because of the same reason I distinguished distribution repositories from
other repositories. For me, it's just a way to provide the user with more
means of configuration. No problem with me if you decide to simply remove
it.

Not at all, just that I haven't found some kind of expander in Balsamiq
Mockups :-)
We could use a toggle button or an expander to optionally show this screen.

Yeah, I guess so. Just ignore this.

It just shows that the PPA is an authenticed source. But you are right, this
is outside of the context :-) Just ignore this mockup.

We could just put a "Select Server" button in the "Provided by
Ubuntu" screen. When clicked, the usual download mirror dialog shows up.

I was thinking of doing mockups for adding and editing sources in
software-center, but since browsing PPAs is a planned feature of
software-center, I abstained from this :-)
Like I said, please share your thoughts. Those mockups were quickly done
using Balsamiq Mockups, and I'm not an UI designer, so obviously this may be
horrible interfaces :p

plugin nautilus-gksu in next Ubuntu relase by default

2010-08-06 Thread Niko Bellic
I like using the nautilus-gksu package to be able to right-click on a
folder/file and select "Open as administrator" to browse/view files
and folders as root. A lot more convenient than having to drop to
terminal.

I think most people, looking at this interface for the first time, would
ask: "What does it mean by 'distribution'?"

It also seems messy to have the same operation (selecting/deselecting)
on very similar items (Ubuntu archives, and other archives) handled at
separate levels (outside a listbox vs. inside).

What is the reason for distinguishing "distribution updates" from "other
updates"?

Are you suggesting that those checkboxes would be shown all the time?
(Also, "Provided by Ubuntu" and "Commercial software" are mutually
exclusive.)

I don't understand what this is showing. Perhaps you could fill in a few
more of the details or a bit more of the context?

I notice that none of your wireframes show where the download server
setting would go. :-)

Linux Desktop Responsiveness Patches

2010-08-06 Thread Przemek Kulczycki
Hi Devs.
Have you seen the article about the recent Linux Desktop Responsiveness Patches?
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODQ3OQ
I think they might be useful to Ubuntu, though I'm not sure if you
would like to backport them to earlier kernels.
Nevertheless, it should be an interesting read for you.
Regards,
