Re: New proposed Ubuntu startup and Shutdown sounds.

2017-08-08 Thread Gustavo Silva
Hello all,

I'm not too fond on those sounds either but this could be the beginning of
being possible to customize sounds and alerts in a more detailed manner.
I'm guessing this could increase the ISO size as it would need to have a
sound base to go along...
Thoughts?

Regards,
Gustavo

Hey Siddharth, thanks for your contribution.

I guess the Ubuntu-desktop mailing list is more appropriate for this,
while some input from design would be needed too.

Cheers

ubuntu-devel-discuss: "Ubuntu font in debian repository"
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2017-August/017613.html

Hello Garrett,

Using a reproducible automated build, with a libre toolchain, for the
Ubuntu Font Family is the ultimate goal yes. This needed/still needs:

  1. development of libre tool chains (== work usable by all fonts...)
  2. building the UFF fonts purely from source, using that toolchain
  3. pragmatically proving non-regression with existing binary-only
hand-built versions out there (as a precondition to switch-over)

For (1), there as been lots of work of libre toolchains in the last 18
months, via Dalton Maag and latterly a large push backed by the Google
Fonts team to make generic libre font toolchains, that are freely
usable by all.

For (2), there is an early test version **not ready for release** of a
open toolchain buildable 'Ubuntu' at:

  https://github.com/daltonmaag/ubuntu

Using a new-two feedback mechanism this branch was used to test and
create further required toolchain features---ultimately for the
benefit of all free/libre fonts.

(Please resist distributing builds from this until it is known to be
at the point of provable non-regression);

For (3): Proof of non-regression. The Ubuntu Font Family is widely
used all over the place (including huge numbers of websites and from
within Google Docs). This means there is an additional responsibility
to prove *non-regression* between the "new" automated-build-form-
source-development branch, against the prior binaries built by hand.

This type of testing requires tooling---Google Fonts has been working
on automated regression testing, which should help with this.

-*- -*- -*-

Yes it is taking a long time, but the world of libre fonts progressed
a lot in the last five years. Once all of this pieces come together,
our collective dream can be fulfilled too.

Until this it is a work in progress,

-Paul

Hello Garrett, thank you for suggestion to use HTTPS, which is now in
the bug tracker for the Ubuntu Font Family Website:

  "font.ubuntu.com should use HTTPS"
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-font-family-website/+bug/1709397

Truetype/Opentype Fonts also have a signing facility inside the font
itself---currently this is a block of nulls/zeros---but there are
long-term plans to make a completely open replacement for Microsoft's
own command-line signing tool.

If anyone (including yourself) would like to help with the
reverse-engineering, or a clean-room implementation of suitable
signing + certificate code; then:

  https://github.com/sladen/fontsign

is one of the places this is being explored at. This should
ultimately benefit *all* free/libre fonts by opening up the
possibility of allowing the signing block to be used as designed with
only open tools.

Can a signed hash be added to font.ubuntu.com?

2017-08-08 Thread Garrett R.
http://font.ubuntu.com/ is offered to the world for downloading Ubuntu font.
But sadly, zero security is provided for those choosing to download the font.
Not only is the domain not secured with https, but I can find no signed hash
authenticating that I'm downloading what Ubuntu intends.

Can Canonical please do something about this ASAP? Canonical should be invested
in protecting visitors to its site, especially when offering things to
download. Please use the Ubuntu signing key to sign a hash of the font,
authenticating its integrity. People should be able to download a signed file
for authentication when downloading the fonts.

I would have filed a bug on this on Lauchpad but I can find no way to file a
bug without indicating a specific package to file against.

Ubuntu font in debian repository

2017-08-08 Thread Garrett R.
Ubuntu font is apparently not included in Debian repository because it requires
proprietary software to build the font from source
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=603157). Is this necessary?
Can a change be made so that Ubuntu font can be included in Debian's repository?
