$ systemd-analyze blame

might be a starting point. OTOH it provides some quite useless
information. I fore example get...

$ systemd-analyze blame
2min 30.756s fstrim.service
 19.498s man-db.service
 14.584s alice-dhcp.service
  3.478s lvm2-monitor.service
  3.292s dev-sdc1.device
  1.060s systemd-random-seed.service
   718ms upower.service
   654ms systemd-logind.service
   650ms lightdm.service
[snip]

...actually it much like took less than 10 seconds to boot and start an
openbox session and even if I should be mistaken and it took longer,
without doubts it was less than 1 minute.

However, even if some units take longer, a session can start, but some
units probably need to finish a process before a session can start.

Trimming and establishing an Internet connection by DHCP needs not to be
finished to start a session, but other services probably first need to
initial things, before a session can be started.

Feature request: Better start up time of Ubuntu like on version 16.04

2020-11-11 Thread Knuth J. Hartlieb

Hey guys,
some versions ago (16.04) a
cold start to me 16 seconds.
With all later versions even with SSD harddrives it takes over
  a minutes.
These MS windows  start up
times and from my point of view sometimes wired.
I saw that all kind of snap
where loaded additional checks and so on.
- Is this really necessary?
- Is there a way to reduce the
start up time by starting the most important jobs first and
something which are not so important later (asynchon) or by
  special requests?

In the past firefox have had
the same problem and in the latest versions the load and start
  up time reduced.
Even informix is doing the same as I suggested above.

  Why shall this be done?
  - For test purposes?
  - Installation of new instances
  - After crashes
  - After problems
  - When an upgrade really needs a reboot
  - Overal usability of the system
  - When someone, like me, will get a support request by a
customer for a severity 1 request and one have to make a cold
  start of its system.

It would be fine when it will be possible to come back to
better start up times in the future.

This is not only helpfull for the desktop version even for the
server version this would be a good feature.

  Best regards,
  Knuth
