I just installed qgis successfully on my 20.04, which indicates that
those who closed the bug were right.

One possible explanation is that there is some package(s) from a PPA or
other 3:rd party repo which isn't compatible with certain dependencies.
In that case you are on your own.

Another possible explanation is that there is some kind of conflict with
some installed package which actually is present in the focal archive.
In that case you should better identify such a conflict before filing a
bug report. If you need help with doing that, please seek help at e.g.
Ask Ubuntu or some other support resource.

uim-qt3?? That package exists in Ubuntu 12.04, but not in later versions
as far as I can see. It should certainly have been uninstalled long ago.

Just wanted to make note that the original sender mentioned KDE

its nature) has differences with the Ubuntu archive.

feisty beta: broken dependencies

2007-03-24 Thread Wenzhuo Zhang

I just upgraded from edgy to feisty beta, and came across many packages with
broken dependencies:

$ sudo apt-get install gnucash
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

I'm sorry that you are encountering problems, but this mailing list
isn't the proper place to discuss this. Please file a bug report, and
send me the number.
(No such problem exists on my end, FWIW)

This is not a real problem. The aptitude UI prompted dependancy problems upon
start. After I applied its suggestions, all the above Broken flags are gone.
Aptitude didn't install any packages in the process. Could it be a bug of
aptitude itself?

One kind fellow pointed out off-list that it's not a proper place to discuss
the dependency problem, and that I should file a bug report instead. Is this
the etiquette or the policy of the ubuntu-devel-discuss list? Personally I
cannot agree with him. On the contrary, I think people should search the bug
tracking system and/or discuss it on mailing list first before filing new bugs.
Open discussion mailing lists are not cathedrals; they are bazaars. Subscribers
should be encouraged to talk whatever to the point.

Possibly. File a bug against it on LP.

As pointed out above, this is a known issue w/ an existing bug report.
If everyone sent an email to this list before filing a new bug, we'd
get 100's of emails a day. That's clearly not an efficient process for
a project the size of Ubuntu, and is one of the reasons for a (highly
active!) bug tracker. It's much easier to have problem reports start
as a bug report (or support request) and then direct as needed.

Broken dependencies which are required and I can't fix

2021-07-12 Thread Kelechi Mba
Hello to whom this may concern,
I'm a new Ubuntu user and I have come across some troubles. I have some broken
dependencies which is making me not able to use the apt-get command. I've tried
reinstalling and removing the packages using the Synaptic Package manager but I
always come up with some errors.
The packages that are broken are libcrypt1:i386, libgcc-s1:i386,
libidn2-0:i386, liblz4-1:i386, libudev1:i386, and libunistring2:i386.
When I tried reinstalling the packages I get the error "E: Internal Error, No
file name for libgcc-s1:i386" and I don't know how to fix it. How do I fix this?

In the old days you just installed ia32-libs.

Nowadays you do something like this:

$ sudo apt-get install lib32z1 lib32ncurses5
$ sudo apt-get install gcc-multilib gcc-7-multilib
$ sudo apt-get install g++-multilib g++-7-multilib

You should check the version of GCC that comes with the platform and
use the specific version when installing. My -m32 test system happens
to use GCC 7 by default, hence gcc-7-multilib and g++-7-multilib.

If you have dependencies, then you use the :i386 syntax, like:

$ sudo apt-get install libfoo:i386

Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiArch, which is kind of
dated nowadays.
