Gotcha.

It's good to get perspective from different places, thanks. :)

I'll invest in the snap solution for my needs.

Mike.

for what it's worth, note Michael has been very good about backporting
bugfixes to 1.6 (thanks!)

I should add that we understand that some users want some specific
packages to be newer. But we can't update those in the stable release
for all users, because every user's set of specific packages is
different. Another way of looking at this is that we do update all the
packages that individual users want updated, and this is what we call
the current (non-LTS) release :)

We do accept the need, however, and snaps are our solution to this
problem.

But Ubuntu does have a concept of LTS, and this by definition applies to
everything Ubuntu ships. This is the point of a distribution stable
release.

Gotcha. Why is the standard package is so far behind in 16.04? Golang doesn't
have a concept of LTS.

It's up to date in Bionic. If you want a newer release in an older Ubuntu,
there is this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gophers/+archive/ubuntu/archive or
you can use the snap (snap install --classic --channel 1.10/stable go).
