As a happy user of a GTX 970 on xenial's 4.4, I'm puzzled by your
assertion.

Then I suggest you look into it yourself instead of just stating your
bewilderment.

However I guess it's my mistake as I was talking soley of the Nouveau
drivers.

If you but search "kernel 4.6 nvidia 900" you will find the posts:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article=gtx-900-nouveau=1

I cannot use the nVidia driver because I lose the good resolution in the
TTYs if I do, at least this has been my experience with a previous card.

And I just don't know how to tackle that (yet).

Of course the kernel has nothing to do with graphics cards in other
respects... apart from supporting any third party modules.

When you use Nouveau on a 4.4 kernel there is no game playing at all;
OpenGL just won't work.

Performance seems abysmal however. I thought it would be doable but it
looks like it is only about 10% or maybe 20% of the performance of the
nvidia driver. My mistake I guess, sorry.

While it will probably work fine for most people, it's not necessarily a
solution:

However, given that there is a 'linux-lts-yakkety' metapackage in there
the work is definitely underway to bring it to xenial proper.

As for the timeline...

Hi Sam,

Try the canonical-kernel-team ppa to get 4.8.x and onwards. Never had a
problem with it even when running xenial.

Hi,

I'm aware of the manual possibilities to install it myself, but is
anybody aware of an expected timeframe for the Yakkety 4.8 kernel to
become available in the Xenial repositories?

The main reason is to get a new version of zfs, since it includes new
features I am looking for (related to hole_birth and open bugs).
