Don't worry you'll learn, with experience.

Wait for your first major hardware crash, obviously at the worst of
the times. You'll thank every deity you know for your backups ...

Yes, backup is boring. It's like insurance. You don't use it in normal
time. But it's absolutely necessary in case of trouble.

Backups are not ironic. Backups are yummy. Backups are the health food
that tastes like junk food. Backups are the smell of a clean world after
summer rain.

Don't worry. After it is no longer in development stage and called
stable, people will start using it for real, in a multitude of
scenarios. *Then* there will be data losses ;)

I find this comment I bit, ironic.

development stage. But from all the testing that has been done so far,
nobody has lost any data yet.

So I guess I find it ironic that they are still recommending
very-regular backups.

The reasons are, in no particular order:

 * There hasn't been a driving need for it (contrast with, say, improved
   NTFS filesystem support)

 * It isn't stable yet. The developers still recommend caution and lots of
   backups

 * Tool support (e2fsprogs) wasn't released in a stable version until last
   month (July)

 * The developers highly recommend tracking out-of-tree kernel patches, even
for 2.6.26 (our current kernel in Intrepid)

It looks as if it may be worth a more serious look in the next release cycle
after 8.10.
