Are we talking about flegita? (There is no gnome-scan package in jaunty,
and I can't find a command by that name.)

flegita is frontend for gnome-scan, yes. However, it is very old
version of it, afaik.
Newest version can be found on author's PPA
https://edge.launchpad.net/~bersace/+archive/ppa

Flegita doesn't find my scanner, which is attached to another computer,
and shared across the network with the net backend of SANE.

gnome-scan doesn't support net backend (yet, probably). I think it
would be welcome to provide patches to do that :)
Please report a bug for missing functionality.

I currently prefer gscan2pdf for scanning. It is quite streamlined to
use, and pretty easy to get started with.

Hello,

Well, it actually is in the repositories, but uses the name gnomescan
instead. That is a metapackage for the libraries and the Flegita GUI.
It seems to do the job well with my scanner and look better than
XSane. I'd seriously consider it for the next release. If we want to
focus on appearance with that release we should also pick applications
that look good.

Regards,

I didn't know XSane could do that either. My printer/scanner is also
networked, but I always plug it right into my laptop for scanning.

Actually, this is my favorite xsane feature. I have multi-functional HP
OfficeJet connected to my home server. Me and my wife can share the
scanner this way.

Wanting to verify this, I noticed that something broken my SANE setup.

Therefore I take back what I said about flegita: it does seem to support
the net backend for SANE. So do xsane and gscan2pdf.

Of these three, gscan2pdf would seem to wins hands down both for
usability and usefulness, from my point of view. For example, flegita
doesn't seem to have an obvious way to preview the scanned pages, before
they're saved to disk.

0.7 of gnome-scan plans to have this.

Cheers,
Peter.
