Therefore I take back what I said about flegita: it does seem to support the net backend for SANE. So do xsane and gscan2pdf. Of these three, gscan2pdf would seem to wins hands down both for usability and usefulness, from my point of view. I have multi-functional HP OfficeJet connected to my home server. Me and my wife can share the scanner this way. That is a metapackage for the libraries and the Flegita GUI. It seems to do the job well with my scanner and look better than XSane. I'd seriously consider it for the next release. If we want to focus on appearance with that release we should also pick applications that look good. Newest version can be found on author's PPA https://edge.launchpad.net/~bersace/+archive/ppa > Flegita doesn't find my scanner, which is attached to another computer, > and shared across the network with the net backend of SANE. gnome-scan doesn't support net backend (yet, probably). I think it would be welcome to provide patches to do that :) Please report a bug for missing functionality. -- mortigi tempo Pēteris Krišjānis -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Re: replacing xsane by gnome-scan
Yes, it is right time to replace xsane with gnome-scan and get some order in Scanning business on Ubuntu/Gnome. As far as I know, Étienne Bersac has started work on 0.7 which was/is planned to become part of GNOME 2.28. However, it should be asked to him if could achieve stability before 9.10 feature freeze. He propably would like to have some help too. Cheers, Peter. 2009/4/26 Nicolò Chieffo : > I'm also intersted to replace xsane. Re: replacing xsane by gnome-scan
I agree, gnome-scan is a much better choice. I haven't tested it lately, it might need a little attention to make it suitable, but it isn't hard to be more user friendly than xsane. --Ken On Sat, 2009-04-25 at 18:11 -0500, solaris manzur wrote: > Seriously, xsane terrifies me. replacing xsane by gnome-scan
Seriously, xsane terrifies me. I'm completely lost each time I use it. It reeks of that poorly designed early-90's hacker-app feel. There's Scanner Utility in Add/Remove, but it doesn't let me scan all of my scanner. Can we please have something similar to the scanning programs of Windows? * gnome-scan is a good choice** - replace xsane by gnome-scan by default* -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
