Same for me. And since few days, when UG starts, I face 2 system error

Re: Anybody else having trouble installing printers?

2013-11-05 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi guys,
I've never been able to install my printer (connected to my router) with
Gnome 3 (all versions). Instead I use system-config-printer which works
well. Once added with this utility, your printer will appear also in the
Gnome printer applet.

Could we have a UG technical status?

2013-11-04 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi all,
Even if I didn't read everything, I've seen a lot of messages related to
build the UG communication staff. In my opinion, technical should come
before communication. Some days ago, I posted a message on the UG G+ page
asking for a technical status about the current situation of UG, and more
important, about the future. I've had no answer at all.

Here is what I know:
- UG 13.10 runs Gnome 3.8
- Ubuntu 14.04 LTS plans to stay with Gnome 3.8 (2 releases behind Gnome)
- Gnome Shell 3.10 stands in the Gnome3 Next ppa (but only the shell)
- Some Gnome 3.10 applications stand in the Gnome3 Staging but not all (no
Maps, nor Photos, nor Music, etc).

If staging is for unstable Gnome version, so it should contain 3.12
development branch, right? And 3.10 apps should have been included into the
Next ppa, right?

Tim sent a message some weeks ago saying Gnome 3.10 (and future versions as
well) raises an compability issue with the Ubuntu baseline (probably
because of the Upstart Ubuntu initiative versus the systemd used by Gnome).

So I think, and would really appreciate, a clarification about what are the
UG present and future. Don't misunderstand me, I don't do UG bashing. I use
Ubuntu on a daily basis since Breezy Badger (2006?), and I used to run
Gnome in the previous millenium ;-). I like both of them, but to me, Gnome
is more important than Ubuntu. And If I can't run a vanilla Gnome on an
Ubuntu baseline, so be it, I'll switch.

Some people clicked +1 on my G+ message, so I guess I'm not the only guy
trying to see something. I appreciate efforts to build a community (kudo to
Ali for that), but that should come on a second time, when goals and
roadmap are clearly stated for everyone, don't you think?

2 issues to confirm

2013-10-22 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I re-installed my pro PC with UG 13.10 + Next + Staging.

I've found 2 issues, would be great if someone could confirm:
- Epiphany doesn't appear in the Gnome applications view. Searching Web or
Epiphany returns nothing. Of course launching from a terminal works well,
and the /usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop does exist and contains
AFAIK valid information.

- Gnome Enterprise Login (aka Kerberos, Windows AD,...) doesn't work
anymore. I created my account, entered my credentials. But anytime I try to
connect a network resource, I'm asked for my credentials, this was not the
case with 13.04. I can try to debug but don't know where to start.

One suggestion for the installation slideshow: I think it would be more
gnomish if Firefox would be shown with the Gnome theme plugin and not the
default theme.

not fixed.

Re: Screen dims during a video playback

2013-10-22 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Didn't try Joseph. That's a so basic feature that I didn't think I have to
change some settings to see this fixed.

"Dim screen" is checked of course, that's absolutely normal, as it is
normal the internals of the OS override this setting when playing a video.

So I may change the settings, but which one? and which value do I have to
set?

Bug ?

2013-10-10 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I'm a facing an issue, could someone confirm:
1. Add a ppa to your system
2. Open the software-properties-gtk, the one where you can access the list
of added ppa
3. Select your just added ppa and click "Edit..."
4. Change Saucy by Raring
5. You're asked for your password, enter it, then click Valid
-> Saucy is not changed by Raring
6. Repeat steps 3 to 5
-> The "Software & Updates" window crashes.

When run from a terminal, I get the following trace:

Traceback (most recent call last):

Can someone confrm?

Gnome 3.10 apps in Next ppa

2013-10-03 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
Just wanna know if there is some roadmap somewhere about the integration of
Gnome 3.10 apps in the Gnome3-Next ppa?

I ask because I run the Gnome3-next ppa, and all core apps (Nautilus,
Gedit, Contacts...) are still in 3.8. Just the shell is 3.10.

Thanks.

Some testing feedback with daily 2013-09-30 image

2013-10-02 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I was able to test the live daily of the 2013-09-30 from a USB key.
Unfortunately, as my internel line is down, I can't raise bug with apport.
However, I can do it manually (so without many technical details) but I
don't know if this is acceptable, let me know.

First topic: Booting in UEFI mode
-> Same problem as some weeks ago, there is a bad screen reshesh frequency
which makes the live CD unsable on Intel Graphics HD4000 (Ivy Bridge).

Second topic: Hardware keys
-> I do confirm all hardware keys work with this daily image (Power switch,
screen backlight, sound and keyboard backlight). All key actions display
the correct overlay widget on the screen as well. So this confirms there is
broken in the Gnome Next PPA. If I find the time, I'll do some testing by
purging the Next ppa from my system and check my assumption.

Re: Reported bugs that need some attention and support

2013-10-01 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
For the first one, are you talking about the screen backlight or keyboard
backlight?

In my case (Dell XPS13), the screen backlight works but too slowly and
there is no widget displayed on the screen.

For the keyboard backlight, I don't remember.

As I already wrote in previous message, sound keys don't work anymore, and
neither power switch.

Huge regression in this overall area in my opinion. Tonight, I may try with
a daily image.

Startup disk creator still very buggy

2013-09-30 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
While trying to burn a USB key with a dailu UG image, I just can say the
Startup disk creator is almost as buggy as it already was in 13.04.

It's very very difficult to burn a USB key with this tool. I always get
"Disk creation failed". Noway to get more, even by lauching the tool from a
terminal.

Any way to diagnose?

Ok I'll do with a live USB key.

I think this is probably the same kind of issue which has turned the power
switch undetected. I'll try asap and let you know.

No more multimedias keys on Dell XPS13

2013-09-29 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I'm sure this was operating on the Beta 1 + Gnome 3.8. I can't say if it
comes from Gnome 3.10 or just from recent updates, but on my Dell XPS13,
the multimedias almost don't work anymore.

- Sound keys don't work at all
- Almost because keyboard and screen backlight work, but...read below
- The screen backlight slider in 3.10 system menu doesn't work
- There is no widget displayed when I activate some of these keys

Bug found on Dell XPS13

2013-09-29 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
With UG 13.10, the physical switch on/off button is not detected by Gnome
anymore. This worked flawlessly on UG 13.04. This regressions doesn't come
from the Ubuntu baseline but from the Gnome interface.

Because, if I open a console with Ctrl+F2, log in, then press the switch
off button, then the PC shuts down. This is Gnome which doesn't detect this
button anymore.

I would like to know what's the best package to raise a bug on?

Thanks.

Re: Issue with Next/Stagning ppa

2013-09-26 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Ok.

Regarding the ppas, your message is not in the same line as Tim previously
wrote. When the Next ppa was created, the message sent by Tim was:
- gnome3 for 3.8
- next for 3.10
- staging for unstable

And as Gnome 3.8 is the baseline of UG 13.10, I don't really understand why
we should add the Gnome3 ppa with 13.10. Could you please clarify?

Thanks.

It helped a bit HadiM, thanks. I removed the 3 gnome3 ppas, and
re-installed the ubuntu-gnome-desktop meta package. I'm back in 3.8.

I added the Gnome"-Next ppa. I works, I'm now running Gnome-Shell 3.10.0.1,

Last annoying point is applications are still in 3.8 (Nautilus and Gedit

Guys, it's pretty urgent to get back a fonctionnal computer. Something

Issue with Next/Stagning ppa

2013-09-25 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
I'm using only the next ppa.

Right now, if I do a dist-upgrade, gdm, gnome-shell and
ubuntu-gnome-desktop are removed because of a non satisfied dependency on
Mutter.

But stupid as I am, I typed Y instead of no. So now, I'm trying with the
staging ppa...

Regression in UG 13.10 + Gnome 3.10

2013-09-23 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
Some days ago, I created a new bug report (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gthumb/+bug/1227838) but was not
really sure if it came from Gnome 3.10 or other update.

I had to re-install UG 13.10 (with Gnome 3.8), gThumb works well. If I add
the Gnome3-next ppa, then the bug appears and make gThumb unusable. I
removed the Gnome3-next ppa with ppa-purge, and gThumb is back!

So I do confirm the bug report validity. And as I use gThumb pretty often,
Gnome 3.10 is not for me as soon as this is not fixed.

UG doesn't start anymore after upgrade

2013-09-18 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I'm writing from my Windows double boot because my UG is in trouble.

Tonight, UG asked me to do a partial upgrade. But I saw it wanted to
removed gdm and gnome-shell without replacing them, so I quit the GUI.

In a terminal, I ran "sudo apt-get upgrade" (not dist-upgrade) which
preserved gdm and gnome-shell. Finally, I rebooted the PC and...UG doesn't
work anymore.

I get the boot screen, I can choose Ubuntu, I see the UG grey splash screen
but very very quickly. Then the screen becomes dark with a white, fixed,
cursor in the top left corner.

I run 13.10 Beta 64 + Gnome-next ppa.

Any help? Thanks.

Re: Issue with the notification area

2013-09-14 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I can give an update after the Tim advices.

Finally, trigger the notification with the touchpad is pretty easy. I put
the cursor few cms above the notification area, and with a good finger
movement, no problem, it's 100% successfull. With the mouse, it's more
problematic even if I know now what I must do. I can try 20 times, and
won't get even 1 success. I have to train myself a bit more I guess, but
it's a bit difficult.

Issue with folder properties from mounted shares

2013-09-13 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I've found an issue in the beta.

1. Connect a share on your network which contains few folders
2. With nautilus, go on this share
3. On the right pane, select all the child folders
4. Right click on a child folder and then "Properties"
-> Nautilus continously loops through the childs files and folders counters
instead of providing the golbal information. This works on 13.04.

The problem of making such thing to trigger with a bit of speed, is it
makes things very difficult if you use a touchpad. I'll try to compare with
a mouse and the touchpad tonight.

Thanks for the tip about FB.

I also suspect an issue with the Facebook account not usable with Empathy,

Status of installation in UEFI mode

2013-09-10 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I finally managed to install 13.10 Beta in UEFI mode. I have some good news
and a bad news.

The bad news: the screen refresh frequency is crapped when the PC is
started in UEFI, as I already wrote in my previous emails. Everything seems
to work (was able to trigger some menu items to properly shutting down the
computer), but it totally not usable.

The good news:
- it works when the PC is started in Bios mode, so I can use 13.10 and my
Windows 8 double boot, really nice.
- as it starts in both Bios and EFI modes, I can make some testing and see
what happens with the updates regarding this issue.

Just see that the Ubuntu 13.10 Beta has not been released yet, so I can't
check.

I'll give a last try to UEFI mode tonight, and if it fails, I switch back

Regression while booting from USB key in UEFI mode

2013-09-08 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
I do confirm a regression while booting UG from an USB key in UEFI mode.

There is a minor issue for both 13.04 and 13.10 : The screen is very very
dark, it's difficult to see the GUI.

The regression affects the graphics, my PC runs an Intel HD4000, the UG
13.04 Live starts correctly. On 13.10, the screen refresh frequency is not
correctly managed, so I have several UG screens displayed at the same time
on my LCD panel. So I'm not able to install UG.

Re: Issue with the Beta 1 on a Dell XPS13 + UEFI + Win8

2013-09-08 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Thanks for your answer.

Yes, in Legavy Bios mode, the Live CD starts well. In UEFI mode, it starts,
but the screen resolution and refresh frequency are obviously wrong. So the
screen is dark, and there are several UG screens in tiles on my LCD panel.

For the confusing issue, steps are:
1. Starts with "Install Ubuntu Gnome" (so NOT the "Try...")
2. Once the first screen is displayed, click on the top right Wireless
indicator
3. Asked for a password enter it + enter
-> Nothing happens, the network is not joined, there is no message about a
wrong password or something similar.

Workaround : start the Ubiquity installation process and wait for the
wireless connection page.

Also, starting in Bios mode makes Ubiquity doesn't see the Windows
partition. So there is no option to "Install alongside Windows". The only
way to to set "Something else".

So my question is: can I install UG on my free space in Bios mode, and then
switch my computer to use UEFI?

Thanks.

Issue with the Beta 1 on a Dell XPS13 + UEFI + Win8

2013-09-07 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi, as I wrote on G+, I'm facing lot of issues with this beta.
I need to make a double boot with Windows 8. And as I read UEFI is now well
supported by Ubuntu, I setup my PC Bios to use UEFI (SecureBoot is
disabled).

I used the Rufus software to burn a UEFI compliant USB Key with UG 13.10
Beta.

First issue : the USB key starts in UEFI but the display (HD4000) is not
correctly managed, then the PC is not usable. Bios setup to start in Legacy
mode, the LiveCD starts well.

Once started (so in Legacy mode), if I double click on "Install Ubuntu
Gnome", nothing happens at all. I don't know the command to launch it in a
terminal.

Another issue: I started directly to "Install Ubuntu Gnome". The GUI starts
well, but I connect to my Wifi network. If I click on its name, nothing
happens. This works well if I just start on the LiveCD. -> I restarted the
process and was able to launch correctly Ubiquity but directly by choosing
"Directly install..." at boot.

As the SSD is UEFI, Ubuntu doesn't detect Windows, I guess this is normal,
but any documentation pointer to deal with would be great.
