I disagree that Automatix screws up the system... I have done dist-upgrades
at all times without any problems... Its always a great idea to have a
separate home partition as it saves all ur preferences even if u go for a
fresh install...

Aha, why does Automatix screw things up - (also to be read as I have
used automatix) ??

Yeah, I guess this is one of the most basic prerequisites when
partitioning for Linux and luckily have it separate

A neat trick for preserving your settings is to have the /home folder on a
separate partition. So even if the upgrade doesn't go well, you can do a
fresh install on the root partition without disturbing the /home partition
and most of the settings will be the same as before. When I did a fresh
install for edgy over dapper, it looked exactly same as dapper as I had a
separate partition for /home.
