The workaround in comment 52 fails on a Gutsy multi-user system, such as Edubuntu with LTSP, because the first user to logon owns the file /tmp /session-is-gnome, and because more than one user might be logging on simultaneously. No, a new user is not affected by the problem. Another remark: the last updates changed the situation a bit - my wallpaper is now drawn, but I still miss the icons on my desktop. The procedure with gTweakUI brings them still back. Another issue (maybe related?): Nautilus ignores my delay settings for the auto-hide and auto-unhide times for the panels (edited via the confihuration editor). Could anyone give me a hint as to how I could find an actual solution? Here is a little bug that some Ubuntu forum members confirmed on laptops with the option auto decrease brightness when idle (not the exact name, I'm french and I don't know the english option name). The problem is that when the computer is idle and then the brightness decrease, it doesn't come back to its original value when you use your computer again, it comes back to an inferior value (don't really easy to explain). Then, after 3 or 4 time the options occurs, the brightness of the screen is really lower than the original and you have to increase it manually to reach the original level :-/ To reproduce the bug, just follow these steps: - increase the brightness to the maximum - wait until the brightness decreases because your laptop is idle - move your mouse to make activity on your laptop and make the brightness to increase - That's all : you can notice the brightness is not at its maximum anylonger, but a little lower. This brought up the gnome background and the nautilus file browser. Then when I logout from xfce4, I am no more able to run xfce4 again. I am using gdm as the login manager. If I use the failsafe session and type in xfce4-session, everything works fine. If I use kdm instead of gdm then also it works, but with gdm it just gives a blue screen with a moveable cursor and thats it... I had tried deleting .cache/ and .config/xfce4* But it did not work too... It also does not work even if I create a new user and log into xfce4 ... Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Hi I have been using Ubuntu at least since Dapper, and always experienced varying degrees of slowness in nautilus, be it right after a reboot like with Hardy for me, or only after a few hours of somewhat intensive file browsing/management. Perhaps Feisty was the fastest for me in this regard, and the only one which I had as fresh install (excepting user files), even Dapper I dist-upgraded it straight from a fresh ubuntu 5.10 install to one of the later Dapper betas. Hardy has been the one with the worst performance from nautilus, for me at least. OK, so I am aware most people have no performance problems with nautilus, but if you search ubuntuforums.org for post titles mentioning nautilus you will see a lot of them are about poor performance/slowness in nautilus. Steps to reproduce this 'fix': 'Normal' behaviour: - Nautilus takes more than a few seconds to start responding (while freezing all open nautilus windows) when the user changes directories, regardless if the user is changing to an empty directory, one full of pictures or directories. (This has nothing to do with reading and displaying cached thumbnails, that comes *after* the nautilus had stopped responding.) Reproducing the fix: - For best results, find a folder that doesn't take to long after the 'normal' nautilus change dir freeze to stop loading, i.e., the red stop button in nautilus turns gray instantly. A directory which contains only a few dozen folders and nothing else is ideal. - Change into a sub folder that as at least one file renamable by you, or create a file yourself - Now, create a file, or rename an existing one from the context menu - 'Rename', you don't need to actually change anything in the name, but just leave the inline editable lable as if you were just trying to come up with a name for the file, but don't touch it! - With name lable for that file still in edit mode, click on the up directory button in nautilus Result: - Nautilus changes to the parent directory and finishes loading it, instantly! Impossible! :) Expected Result: - It would take more than a couple of seconds to change directories.
