[ubuntu-in] How to "remember" gnome terminal window size and position?

2008-09-04 Thread Vishal Rao
Hi,

Is there a way to get the gnome terminal window (and other apps' windows) to
remember its size and position so that the next time I open it should be
restored that way?

At home I use compizfusion's window placement plugin to set this up but at work
I don't have or want compiz running so am looking for another way to
do this in gnome.

Found some links while drafting this email:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5623408
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3654/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1442/

(Voted for the brainstorm ideas and using "--geometry 150x50+50+50" for the
terminal as a workaround - its a fixed position but doesnt remember
the last position.)

Is there any way we can currently do this (remember settings) for any
app window in
general with Ubuntu Hardy (gnome) without compiz?

Thanks!
- Vishal

[ubuntu-in] Recovering files from lost+found

2008-09-04 Thread Kartik Singhal
HI all,
Yesterday, after transferring a lot of linux ISOs from my NTFS partitions to
my home partition on ext3 file system (both types of FSs on same harddisk)
and restarting my Ubuntu 8.04.1 system, I received an error saying that I
have to run "fsck" manually in the maintenance mode as my root partition
encountered some problems in the automatic (routine) file system check. I
ran it and answered yes (the default option) to all questions.

After the check, I logged into the system and was shocked to see that the
ISOs I just transferred were not there in the home directory. There were
some other problems such as all my bookmarks (in Places) were gone and I
also received an error saying that TomBoy couldn't load.

I searched around and finally found some files starting with "#" in the
lost+found folder of /home. I found out about their sizes and was relieved
to see that some of them were around 700 MB in size (which means my lost
ISOs). But there were only 3 files with this big size and I had more ISOs
than 3. Apart from ISOs I have lost many of my configuration file which are
present in home folder (most importantly those of vmware, so that I am
unable to use it.)

I want to know how can I recover my files from lost+found and also those
that are not present in that directory but lost. Please help. I am a newbie
in linux and have never encountered data loss problems in linux (I thought
they were windows things).

[ubuntu-in] Over Quoting and Non-Trimming

2008-09-04 Thread Parthan SR
Dear list members,

This mailing list follows Mailing list Etiquettes or Guidelines very
similar to one given in
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists/etiquette, which is
not different from commonly followed mailing list guidelines by most
other technical mailing lists. The following are considered to be very
important and often insisted points amongst them,

[1] Write your email *underneath* the email which you are replying to.

[2] Tailor your reply to fit the text which you are replying to. *Do not
quote the whole of the previous email* - remove any unnecessary text. To
avoid confusion, it's often a good idea to replace removed text with a
brief indication that something has been removed, like /[snip]/.

[3] Avoid sending emails in HTML format, if possible. Some people may
find it more difficult to read or reply to these emails. Also, HTML
email takes up more space, so people with restricted internet access
will be happier to receive plain text emails.

Off late, we have been seeing mails which do not reflect these
guidelines being followed. Though guidelines are not rules but
suggestions, they help in having an healthy, meaningful interaction in
the list. As the mailing list is archived for future references,
following these guidelines will help people searching for information
from the archive.

Please do not top post and please do trim the previous posts in the
thread, leaving only the exact point you're replying to.
Please trim off the signatures left by the earlier post as their words
get quoted and their names attributed at the beginning of the quote itself.
Please send mails in text mode, as it is smaller in size, easier for
people who read things in text mode clients as well as help in
maintaining a clean archive.

Note: There is no intention to debate the validity of these guidelines,
which has been done numerous times in almost every existent mailing list
in this world.

Hope to get you support in this regards,
Mailing List Administrators.

[ubuntu-in] Dell and Ubuntu!

2008-09-04 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
It is futile to argue about something that is out in the open. I admit
that dell is offering support for ubuntu hardy but in those early days,
there was no support available for gutsy. Anyways no point in talking
about the past. Even now, the dell linux wiki comes with a disclaimer
about no technical support being available.

Last but not the least, my dear Onkar, I am running ubuntu hardy on a
Dell Inspiron 1420. And maybe thats one of the reasons why I fell for a
Dell.

My objection is to the fact that all laptop users are being forced to
buy windows vista, and that I think is a major impedance to widespread
adoption of ubuntu, and linux. I went with Dell because they had the
courage to go against the norm.

I hyave confirmed from Dell India that these two models are available with

Ask the Dell sales rep when you call the toll free number.

Do let me know if you face any difficulties.
