seems like thr problem was with the Compfiz desktop setting
specifically the "Viewport Switcher"

YO! du rocks.

du -h show size in human readable format like 10M, 234K etc

du -s shows only the total(sumarize) size the folder not each folder.

or combined
  du -hs

its called disk usage analyzer (and baobab is what in runs with from
the terminal)

There is something called 'baobab' which is available in gnome-utils
package. It should be installed by default and available in
Applications -> Accessories menu.
It shows a nice graphical representation of disk space usage in any folder.

Sorry. Gmail does that. I always assumed that it comes at the bottom.

Like I said I installed everything from a command line installation so
gnome, xfce4 , etc was not added. I manuall added xorg, icewm, etc
