[Bug 236826] Re: synergy segfault at 08206344 eip b7dd00d2 esp bf8904a4 error 4
My synergy server just died with the following message from the kernel: synergys[10785]: segfault at 18 rip 7fbf072b1f04 rsp 7fff104aaf88 error 4 I noticed that when I tried to switch to a client's screen, but I don't know if that was the moment it died, or shortly before that. The only significant thing that happened between I last had my cursor on the client's screen was that the screen saver activated on the client. This is the first time it's happened to me, I've been using synergy every day for 8 hours a day for the last half a year or so. But maybe the people for whom it crashes more often could consider running with -d DEBUG2 and hope to get some context on what it does when it crashes? This is synergy 1.3.1-2ubuntu2 on Ubuntu 8.04.1. The client is also synergy 1.3.1-2ubuntu2 but on gutsy. -- synergy segfault at 08206344 eip b7dd00d2 esp bf8904a4 error 4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236826 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 300089] Re: Warnings when compiling kernel
This affects Ubuntu 9.04 as well. The comment OP is referring to can be found in a LKML thread here: http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2008/11/20/4215134 Clearly this is a relatively harmless message - especially given the fact that mainline doesn't even see it. However, it pollutes my kernel builds for no good reason and gets in the way of doing 'real' work on it. Going forward I see several methods of resolving this: 1) Disable the -Wformat-security compiler option in gcc (but - presumably there was a reason for enabling it) 2) Disable said option inside kernel builds. - doing this makes it an upstream change. 3) Go through the kernel and fix all these warnings with a single mega-patch that is liable to never get accepted. Upstream change again. Given that I don't consider myself quite enough of an expert on the kernel sources and the security trade-offs inherent in the various choices here and given that any upstream kernel patch probably should make it's way through Ubuntu anyway some guidance from an ubuntu dev on this is appreciated ;-) -- Warnings when compiling kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 325220] [NEW] pulseaudio volume control sliders range mismatch
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio There's a mismatch between the volume sliders in PulseAudioManager and pulse audio's volume control. The former's sliders can adjust volume up to 480% while the latter's sliders are limited to 100%. To reproduce (see attached image): 1. Run PulseAudioManager. 2. From the pulseaudio notification applet, choose 'Manager' and 'Volume control'. 3. In the Manager, choose 'Devices' and select the appropriate device (input or output). Double-click on the device to get a device volume control window (the top one in the attached image). 4. In the other Volume Control, choose output or input as appropriate (the bottom window in the attached image). 5. In the device volume control window, adjust the volume above 100%, eg to 129%. The other volume control's text is updated to match the device volume control (eg 129%), but note that the slider is actually still at 100% - as soon as you try to move the slider, it immediately resets the volume to 100% in both windows. 6. Try to move the slider in the other volume control window past 100% - it isn't possible. Expected result: the other volume control's sliders' range should match the device volume control's sliders' range, ie both should be able to go to the same maximum percentage. Re: [Bug 320222] Re: _cache-open() failed, please report.
Roger Binns wrote: My complaint is about the message appearing in the first place and why the whole package/update system doesn't just self heal instead of spitting out a message that only the geekiest can understand. I understand your complaint. I think that this issue doesn't belong to the update manager, but it should be handled by dpkg. As a matter of fact update-manager uses dpkg in order to keep the system updated, and the message you got was outputted by dpkg, not update-manager. In many cases running 'dpkg --configure -a' doesn't solve the issue. For example see bug #324252. For this reason I don't know if it is bug or a feature of dpkg, however I agree that this message is almost incomprehensible to an inexperienced user. Anyway I'm not a developer of Ubuntu so... let's wait for a comment of a more experienced user than me! Also note that it is a security issue. The user's system was set to automatically update. She just ran the update manager out of curiosity to discover that she was over a hundred updates behind and the obscure message with the request to report it. On the other hand this issue should be handled by update-manager, which may alert the user about missing updates. For this reason I suggest you should change the description of this report and ask to implement this missing feature in update-manager. For example: https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~jtv/launchpad/bug-324264/+merge/3368/comments/7454/+reply (This is a private merge proposal so you may not be able to see it.) The textarea is prefilled with the text of the comment that is being replied to. However, there are a number of subtle (but consistent) corruptions: * In many places, but not all, the sequence .in has been lost. Previously I've seen similar redacting behaviour, but for a different substring. * Double quotes have been added around the whole text. The source code for the page is correct, so this is definitely a problem in Firefox. At least, it's not an issue on the server. [Bug 325366] [NEW] prism2_usb both in staging and misc/wireless
Public bug reported: We now have the staging tree in Jaunty kernels. (I was a little bit surprised, so any pointers to the plans, policies or discussion about this would be awesome). I discovered that my prism2_usb device now was picked up by the staging driver. I guess it was not planned that we now are shipping two prism2_usb.ko modules, one in staging and another in misc/wireless. But the good news is that the staging module seems to perform better than the old: - my wlan always come up at boot. Previously I often had USB problems if it was plugged in, and I would have to unplug and replug it once or many times. - after heavy usage (dist-upgrades etc) it would previously often get stuck (like if it was overheated) but now it seems stable, from my testing so far. YMMV. So maybe we can delete the old misc/wireless version, which was also a nightmare to have synced and maintained, at least from my experience dealing with the kernel team. I don't know if you have tools to detect other driver conflicts with staging. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: linux-wlan-ng ** Tags added: linux-wlan-ng -- prism2_usb both in staging and misc/wireless https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325366 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 160996 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160996 With all due respect to Pedro Sebastien, I think that Giuseppe is right here. Until now, it has been standard procedure to mark duplicate bugs as duplicate, with a link to the master bug and a comment giving this standard response: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#A%20duplicate I am not very comfortable with this new trend, to just close as invalid. Not all users know what is a duplicate bug and how to search for it (let alone reliably find it). It is our job to find the duplicates for them and to help them follow the bug resolution process (upstream reporting, in progress, fix committed and released). As a personal opinion, I think it's better to leave the bug open (as New) until we have the time to actually find the duplicate, than to mark as invalid and leave the bug reporter in the dark... -- evince filename-with-colon-innit horkage (Jaunty) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325160 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 325255] [NEW] too many consoles by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: system-services Hello, I think Ubuntu has too many tty consoles by default. Most of the users never use at least one. Those never used consoles have the drawback to slowdown the startup time (cold start or resume from disk). For laptops, more startup resources means more energy consumption. Even if the startup benefit or energy saves are small, I think that each small enhancement is an enhancement and thus may have value added side effects on other topics. I think the below files could be deleted: /etc/event.d/tty3 /etc/event.d/tty4 /etc/event.d/tty5 /etc/event.d/tty6 In the case a user wants more tty consoles, it means he has enough skills to add them himself. [Bug 325160] Re: evince filename-with-colon-innit horkage (Jaunty)
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 160996 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160996 I apologize if you got a bad tone from my ascii text; tragically ascii is devoid of any extra cues other than the words and no negatiive tone was intended. Regarding bug hunting, I *had* hunted for the same sort of bugs. I chased down a similar bug earlier in gnumeric a year or two ago. The problem there was that the colon was causing the url identifier to believe that the file is a url of pathuptocolon:stuffaftercolon. The same is the case here. forcing a file:// url works regarless of colon. The bug is triggered on colon, and that's what I searched for. [Bug 325230] [NEW] LFE speaker on 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller not working in Jaunty
Public bug reported: Hi all, Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch) Release:9.04 alsa-base - Version: 1.0.18.dfsg-1ubuntu3 pulseaudio - Version: 0.9.14-0ubuntu3 I have a laptop (MSI GX700) with 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller, because alsa is not detecting the sound card correctly I am using options snd-hda-intel model=targa-dig in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base This option was working in Ubuntu 8.10 with all my speakers. I am using the sound card in 6 channel mode with 3 stereo jacks connected to an external 5.1 system. All the speakers are working under Windows, but under Jaunty I have no sound from the LFE speaker. I tried changing back to 2 channels and back again to 6, but with no luck. I also tried with this command: speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 -l1 -twav All the speakers have been working again even the LFE. but if I start Audacious, or smplayer, or totem I get sound only from 5 speakers and no sound from the LFE. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- LFE speaker on 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller not working in Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
