"like in other distros" ? you can do it in ubuntu too without the need
to install the whole OS twice...

i installed ubuntu (9.04 alpha tho) and installed the package
"kubuntu-desktop" which got me KDE alongside GNOME.

i selected KDM as default login greeter, in there you can pick the
session you want to log into, GNOME or KDE...

one minor annoyance is that both DEs' software programs show up in the
menus, so i have multiple browsers, email
torrent, multimedia apps kind of littering the place...

im sure it will work with stable 8.10 too... unless you specifically
want to install 2 OS instances for each DE...

As with other distros, you can also install multiple desktop
environments in Ubuntu. Simply install the requisite KDE3 or KDE4
packages from the repository, and then when you login, you can choose
what session to run (Gnome or KDE or any other) from your login menu.

See http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde for a guide (hasn't been
updated to the latest version of Ubuntu but the process is the same.)
No need of a dual-boot.

Because i would like to try the KDE environment and am not sure how to
get it going - like in other distro's where one can install multiple
environments

It is possible. But, why would you want to do that?

No conflict but make sure the uid of your user is kept the same on
both if the username is the same.

I don't see any reason why dual booting ubuntu and kubuntu makes sense.

Nope. In the past I have installed multiple DE/WM's and used Qt apps
with GNOME and vice versa. It could probably be some package which
might be requiring some KDE specific thing to be running. But first
you will have to mention what packages are you talking of and try to
execute them from terminal to get error messages, which will be useful
for finding the cause of the problem.

[ubuntu-in] KDE packages on Ubuntu - frequent crashes

2009-02-21 Thread ramnaraya...@gmail.com
Hi

Have been installing some kde packages on Ubuntu.

Am wondering if KDE packages are more prone to crashes in a Gnome
environment.

Any comments.

[ubuntu-in] Some questions regarding Kubuntu

2009-02-21 Thread ramnaraya...@gmail.com
Hi

Is anyone running kubuntu and ubuntu - in dual boot - is it possible
(same releases)

If the /home is kept the same would there be any conflicts between kde
packages installed in Ubuntu and the packages installed through kubuntu ??

Am planning to dual boot so advise / suggestions would be welcome

thanks
