[ubuntu-in] karmic nbr and xp talking

2009-11-11 Thread Moz
Hello All,

I just tried voice and video chat between a Karmic Netbook Remix Live
session (running on an Asus Eee PC 4G), and WinXP. The audio chat works
between Pidgin 2.6 and googletalk client, but voice or video does not work
properly between Gmail through Firefox and Pidgin.

Between Empathy and XP, audio chat works between googletalk on XP and from
within Firefox also audio chat works, but not video chat.

I have used dvd-slideshow from screenshots of OOImpress presentation, for
places that do not have a LCD projector but do have a DVD player and TV, and
that works fine. It is easy to include an audio track in the slideshow. But
I have not included a video clip in it. But that could be done with Devede,
because in it you can edit preexisting DVDs too.

You could also use Lives (from getdeb.net) or Cinelerra (cinelerra.org),
both are the video stream editors, but I have not used them for the purpose
you described.

I would also use a combination of dvd-slideshow, mplayer, mencoder for the
purpose you described. And this would all be commandline based.

Sincerely,

Moz

fsck is not to be run manually. It is run every 30 boots in Ubuntu.
fsck is a program to check file system consistency. There is nothing
fsck can do about failing hard disks.

[ubuntu-in] Information on two software

2009-11-11 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

Needed info on two types of software
1. My laptop HD seems to be failing, atleast that what Karmic is
reporting "DISK HAS TOO MANY BAD SECTORS" - so any idea what software
i could use to find out what is happening and maybe rectify the
problem. fsck is too confusing to use and have not been able to find a
GUI for it.

2. A few days back saw a friend using windows movie player - he placed
some images (still pictures) and added music and generated a movie
(video) with the pictures. I was quite taken aback, and wondered is
there any similar software in Ubuntu (Linux).

would be grateful for suggestions

[ubuntu-in] OT - Linux does it again (New PC to encourage older users)

2009-11-11 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

When i read this article my curiosity was satisfied, happily so, only
when i confirmed that it had to be Linux that made it possible. My net
is too slow to get more details, but the description of the interface
is similar to the Sugar UI used in the OLPC's.

ram
***

New PC to encourage older users
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/8352606.stm

A new computer aimed at people aged over 60 who are unfamiliar with
PCs and the internet has been unveiled.

The simplified desktop - called SimplicITy - has just six buttons
directing users to basic tasks such as e-mail and chat.

The computer comes pre-loaded with 17 video tutorials from television
presenter Valerie Singleton

More than 6 million people over the age of 65 have never used the
internet, according to government figures.

'Social benefit'

Each made-to-order computer takes two weeks from request to delivery
and can be ordered by post.

The computer has been developed in partnership with Wessex Computers
and a website aimed at older people called discount-age, set up by Ms
Singleton.

She said she was shocked by the number of older people who do not have
computers - a survey by the Office for National Statistics in August
2009 revealed that 6.4 million people over 65 have never used the
internet.

"there are some people who will undoubtedly feel patronised by the
very idea of a computer for the elderly"

Rory Cellan-Jones
Technology correspondent

Read Rory's thoughts in full

"I think people just don't understand them," she told BBC News. "I've
been using a computer for quite some time and I don't understand
everything.

"Every time I learn a new thing to do on my computer I have to write
it down so that I can remember it."

The SimplicITy computer has no log-in screen when started up, and
contains no drop-down menus.

It opens straight to a front page called "square one" containing
separate clickable buttons for e-mail, browsing the web, files (for
storing word documents and photos etc), online chat and a user
profile.

The e-mail system is a modified version of an Italian design called Eldy.

All SimplicITy users with an eldy.org address will be able to chat to
each other via the "chat" button.

The computer is built using Linux operating system, a free operating
system that can be customised by users.

If people decide they no longer need the SimplicITy desktop, they can
replace it with a standard Linux desktop.

Andrew Harrop, head of public policy for charity Age Concern and Help
the Aged said efforts to get older people online should be
"applauded".

"Pensioners who aren't online are missing out on hundreds of pounds in
potential savings by shopping around and can also often miss out on
the best interest rates for savings accounts, not to mention the
social benefits of being online," he said.

@ Mehul,

If it is 9.10, then it's suffering with this BUG [1]. Recently lot of
modem is not working with Network Manager due to introduction of modem
manager in 9.10. One example is Reliance Broadband NetConnect+ Huawei EC
1260. But it works fine with wvdial. Workaround is downgrade the NM to
0.7 version.

I would also recommend to provide modem / provider information on this
page [1] with BUG ID / Vendor ID / Product ID.

[1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager/+bug/461096
[2] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkManager/Hardware/3G

Tip:
If you are using wvdial in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), empathy will not
work. empathy will only work with connection recognized by NM. Here is
work around.

Go to -> Alt + F2 -> gconf-editor -> /apps/empathy/use_conn -> Uncheck

[ubuntu-in] Apologies to Ubuntu

2009-11-11 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

A few days back while posting about Ubuntu Karmic Koala - i had said
that for once i would like to see Ubuntu pick up a device and make it
"just work"

the device in question was a ZTE AC8700 CDMA 3 g bsnl mobile broadband device.

For a few days i cracked my head getting it to work. Then in
desperation i checked it out on a wincedows machine - where too it did
not work.

Finally the problem was narrowed down to the fact that BSNL has muffed
up and thats where the problem was.

Toda i got the new device and voila it worked - "IT JUST WORKED"

UBUNTU DOES IT AGAIN -

Thanks Ubuntu and apologies for earlier.

Only thing i am making it work through wvdial and not the default
network manager, if and when that works i will let the list know.

[ubuntu-in] Debian / Ubuntu Joint Booth at FOSS.IN 2009

2009-11-11 Thread Aanjhan R
Hi All,

I know I am a bit late. But was wondering how many people are planning
to attend foss.in from this mailing list. Anyone like to volunteer for
manning a Debian/Ubuntu booth ?

@Kartik - Any suggestions? If we get enough volunteers we can go ahead
and request for a joint debian and Ubuntu booth @ foss.in 2009

Regards,
Aanjhan

It will be great if you can post a video of the things you are trying.
