Re: [Bug 538346] Re: Display manager in Ubuntu 9.10 not working with dual displays properly

2010-06-23 Thread Simon Cropper
On Wednesday 23 June 2010 10:45:41 you wrote:
Hi Simon, so everything is working properly now? Great. :) Maybe it was
an issue with those old NVIDIA files in the first place.

If the issue is resolved for you, please mark this bug as Invalid (since
it was probably a configuration problem). Thanks!

David,

Yes, the original symptoms have disappeared, but new ones have appeared in
their place. Presumably all due to the 'configuration' or 'bug'.

What would be causing the screen to display a mosaic on loading? I have also
noted that the screen takes ~1-2 seconds longer to repaint in certain
instances. For example, when the panels appear at startup - this takes 2 or so
seconds where previously it was 1/2 a second. Although the screen appears to
be working the desktop does not appear quite right.

After implementing your fix I have had the computer crash due what appeared to
be screen related problems.

What happened was ...
- I went to log off and the desktop noted that an unknown program was still
open.
- I waited but it did not finish.
- I looked in the system monitor and could not see it.
- Eventually I tried again and told the logout routine to force a shutdown.
- What happened then was the screen became totally jumbled (looking
suspiciously like the screen when starting up - i.e. confused)
- I forced a hardware reboot and the problem has not reoccurred; yet

In another instance (again showing how things are not quite right) ...
- I logged off as a user and the dialog box listing the available users on the
desktop behaved in an unusual manner.
- instead of appearing in the centre of the screen as usual the dialog box
repainted so the height occupied the entire screen, then stepped down until
eventually reaching 'normal size'. The process took 1-2 seconds, which seemed
like an eternity. I was able to log back on.
- its like ubuntu is getting confused, or the driver is not really working
properly. The fact that things eventually settle down - DURING A PARTICULAR
SESSION - suggests that either the 'bug' is only triggered at certain times or
ubuntu is falling back to generic drivers as the appropriate one does not work
correctly.

So David, in your mind is this 'bug' actually fixed? To me, something is still
not quite right. The system was more stable originally, just a pain to have to
setup the dual screens on startup. Now I don't have to do this but a range of
new symptoms have appeared. Superficially the aberrations are not deal breakers
but that assumes (a) the symptoms are not indicative of something more
serious, or (b) the system does not leave my 'blind' while doing some mission
critical task resulting in data loss or corruption.

If you can help resolve these questions, it would be greatly appreciated, as
my confidence in the stability of the system is undermined everytime I see a
screen that would normally just appear; flicker, repaint slowly or not appear
to behave in the same way as normal.

[Bug 597933] [NEW] Audio discs not played

2010-06-23 Thread David Haas
Public bug reported:

I'm running 10.04. When I insert an audio disc into the optical drive,
the Audio Disc icon appears on the desktop and CD Player (my default)
opens, but says No disc. Then I click Places Computer (in the panel)
and the Computer- File Browser dialog opens. Here the CD/DVD Drive:
Audio Disc label with its icon is shown. Double-clicking this results in
a listing of all the tracks on the CD.

When I click on CD/DVD Drive in the Disc Utility dialog, the specs for the
drive are listed:
Model: ATAPI DVD-ROM 16x
Firmware: TANE
Location: Port 2 of PATA Host Adapter
Capacity: 703MB
Device: /dev/sr0
Connection: SCSI
Smart Status: Not supported
List volumes: Unknown 703MB

All other CD players/rippers tried also fail to show the CD's tracks and
to play the CD. These are Rhythmbox, Sound Juicer, Asunder, Audex,
Banshee, and Ripper X.

Puppy Linux 5.0 with its CD player shows all the tracks, plays them and
rips them. So, presumably the problem is not within the hardware as
such.

When I initially tried to play an audio CD, something different happened
from the above. After the Audio Disc icon appeared when the CD was
inserted, a dialog appeared with the following message: Unable to mount
location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus Error. No Reply: Did not
receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not
send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the
reply time out expired, or the network connection was broken.

Before installing 10.04 on my desktop, I was running 9.04. Then,
inserting an audio CD did not even show the Audio Disc icon on the
desktop.

But then as now, ISO images run well as do data CDs.

My Kernel is 2.6.32-22-generic

Any fix would be appreciated.

David Haas

[Bug 597934] [NEW] Intermittent and random crash, cant reliably reproduce.

2010-06-23 Thread Richard Waters
Public bug reported:

Clean install of Desktop AMD64 10.04 (this is the 6th install in a row)

Almost appears like the bugs regarding:
* NoScript in Firefox
* Mem leak caused by increased network traffic/windows effects
* Mouse and Keyboard errors that freeze the machines

I have tried all of the above solutions @ once, I have also installed
fresh systems and tried each of the patches (including PPA patches)
individually on fresh installs and it seemed to always happen, crash and
screen freeze, within 10min of booting the machine.

On this install I ran for nearly 48hrs without a crash, and all I had
done was swap my mouse and keyboard, turn off window effects (set to
none) and not installed noscript plugin.

When the crash happened I have 2 instances of firefox windows open,
empathy and broadcast running and actively in use. I am however
currently running them all again now, have also added a few more
windows, more tabs and a torrent client in an effort to overload and
reproduce the situation again, while typing here. I have no freeze.

I hope this isnt too much info and it helps in some way.

Thanks, Rich

[Bug 597691] Re: Please push to latest FF (3.6.*)

2010-06-23 Thread kurt belgrave
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Re: [Bug 581525] Re: Lucid: system becomes unstable randomly, seems related with apparmor

2010-06-23 Thread Seth Arnold
On Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 6:39 AM, John Johansen
john.johan...@canonical.com wrote:
this is really distirbing, this is the first I have heard of problems
with children profiles, what problems where you having with child

Most of the profiles I write I do by hand. I've had enough cases of
the tools missing entries, or re-suggesting entries that I had done in
a previous pass, and all the new children null-complain-profile
replacements, that for the most part doing things by hand is faster.
(But I'm not sure I've tried them under 10.04.)

When I used child profiles for /etc/init.d/ushare, they appeared to
work perfectly:

$ cat /etc/apparmor.d/etc.init.d.ushare
# Last Modified: Wed Mar 3 22:29:57 2010
#include tunables/global

/etc/init.d/ushare {

However, my system was _very_ unstable with my /etc/init.d/origami

[Bug 430011] Re: Huawei E220 and E169 3G dongle do not work on karmic (major regression)

2010-06-23 Thread Lasse Kärkkäinen
For the record, on Fedora 13 both my devices (E270 and E1820) work
perfectly. Connection is established within seconds and on every
attempt, unlike Ubuntu which may take a long time to connect and very
often fails to connect at all, and E1820 also required installing
usb_modeswitch to make it even get detected and I also had to disable
PIN code request because NetworkManager connection status started
flickering otherwise and the device wouldn't work. I had neither of
these two problems on Fedora either.

[Bug 382267] Re: memory leak

2010-06-23 Thread Michael Alexander
I ran checkgmail -update a while ago (after my fresh install of Lucid)
and it didn't improve the memory leak at all. Just now, after several
days of running nonstop, checkgmail was using 453MB of RAM according to
the System Monitor. I just restarted checkgmail and now it's using 20MB
of RAM, which is what it usually uses when it's freshly started. It
continues to use more and more RAM the longer it's running.

[Bug 285892] Re: ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x807f SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen

2010-06-23 Thread DjznBR
I've been testing the system for eight hours without Chrome or Flash
plugin. As I told, I had done a Catalyst 10.6 installation prior to the
previous mentioned software here. I suspect that fglrx is causing all
this trouble. I realized an hour ago that my dmesg log was full of SATA
errors while the computer was idle. And the machine was error-free for
10 days, before I installed fglrx.

Sure that I feel like a fool giving fglrx another chance, as I always do
(Patience is running out though, and I never will be buying ATI stuff
again). But installing fglrx today just showed me how this bug and fglrx
can be related on AMD based boards.

[Bug 597495] Re: broffice dependencies recognized as unused by computer janitor app

2010-06-23 Thread felipemoraes
I made a mistake it seems, the packages are not unused, what computer
janitor says is: Unsupported package, it isn´t in package repository.
But why is that if I installed broffice from the ubuntu software
center? Broffice is the only openoffice used here in Brazil, so if it
isn´t certified or something it should, it is being used here in Brazil
for so long.

[Bug 568306] Re: Double-exit counterintuitive when running byobu at login

2010-06-23 Thread Kamilion
Just a quick note; how does one explicitly exit to the remote shell from
byobu now?

Perhaps an Exit to to this machine's console option would be good in
the F9 menu? Then it's out of the way but accessible; having it below
the profile-autolaunch would be the correct place in my opinion.

Just a non-zero exit, I guess?

[Bug 597947] [NEW] ARM FTBFS fix

2010-06-23 Thread Michael Casadevall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gobject-introspection

This is a FTBFS fix for gobject-introspection. On ARM, some additional
types are defined such as ushort/ulong/uint when building gobjection-
introspection (cause unknown, still investigating). This fix works
around this problem by renaming the variables and updating the test
suite to match so there is no possible conflict; I ask that this patch
be uploaded due to the criticality of gobjection-introspection in
building images due to the dependency tree.

Two tests you can proceed:
  1. kill acpid and run `acpi_listen`. see if any ACPI event when you press the
keys.
  2. `sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/eventX`. X is number, check `ls
/dev/input/` for all the events. see if any scancode shows up when pressing the
keys.

[Bug 597952] [NEW] Does not prioritise wired connection over wireless

2010-06-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-network

When I have a wireless connection active and then plug in a wired
ethernet connection the wired interface gets set up with an IP address
as expected but the routing information is not updated to prefer the
wired interface over the wireless.

Applications which already had a connection open on the wireless
interface's IP obviously don't change interface, but new connections
started up also use the wireless interface. I can reproduce this by
connecting my wired interface while the wireless is active and then
rsyncing over the local network. At this point I'll get ~2.5MiB/sec
transfer rate. After disconnecting the wireless interface by selecting
it in the network-indicator and restarting rsync I get a consistent
12MiB/sec transfer rate.

Since wireless interfaces are generally significantly slower than wired
ethernet this results in needlessly sub-par network performance.

[Bug 571473] Re: add support for application indicator

Added basic support for appindicator

Still missing is support to detect new stashes, so Cryptkeeper must be
restarted when new stashes (encrypted folders) are added.
Also, support for actions on stashes are not availiable, such as delete,
information and rename, due to the way appindicator uses
menus, it is not possible to show a right click menu in a stash.

works with uswsusp installed and the /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module

Marking this comment as invalid (would mark it won't fix, but can't)
because the package wesnoth-1.8 exists. IMO this is the wrong way to do
things - making the latest stable release the base name of wesnoth
(and compat- or wesnoth-1.6 for the old version) seems more consistent
with the rest of the community.

It will probably be the weekend before I will have time to do this.
In the mean time, I'd welcome and advice, hints or recommendations for
which mainline kernel package I should grab or if there is anything

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

My bug is like some, but not all of the problems I've seen mentioned in bug
 302276.

If I hibernate with firefox running, when I wake the system back up, flash
videos have no sound unless I restart firefox.  I am running alsa without
pulseaudio.  After waking the system, when sound is not working I have the
 following:

 $ sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   hursh      2275 F...m rhythmbox
                     hursh     32694 F...m firefox
 /dev/snd/seq:        timidity   1826 F timidity

I can fix it by quiting firefox and restarting it.  I can just use the quite
option in the menu.  I do not need to forcefully kill firefox as others have.
I would be happy with a work around that does not require terminating
firefox since that kind of defeats the purpose of hibernating.

 $ lsb_release -rd
 Description:    Ubuntu 9.10

 3) What you expected to happen
I expect sound in flash videos after I hibernate.  I would at least like to
not have to restart application after hibernating.  Restarting a driver or or
some other (seemingly) non-stateful thing would be fine.

 4) What happened instead
After hibernate, flash videos in firefox have no sound.  This is true for
pages that where open when the system was put into hibernation and for pages
that where opened after awakening from hibernation.  Quitting firefox and
restarting it restores sound.  This only seems affects flash videos.  It may
have affected ogg videos before, but I can't say with certainty.  I do not
use pulseaudio, so it cannot be a pulse issue.  I have a multi-open sound
card so it is not an issue with one application blocking the sound card.

Having just looked at the directions for reporting firefox problems, I did
not create a clean profile prior to my last hibernate.  I'll try to do that
in the next day.  I also had not started firefox from a terminal.  I'll do
that as well.  I have the problem with many web sites.  Youtube is common.
The site at the moment is 'http://www.gearheadrpg.com/?p=85' with an embedded
Gundam video that I assume has sound.  The
 'http://freegamer.blogspot.com/2010/04/open-source-rpgs-coming-up-dawn-rpg.html'
has several embedded videos that had no sound.

[Bug 597786] Re: Music Store should know my locale

2010-06-23 Thread Matt Griffin
Ah... I see what you mean. There is one payment path that is used by all
stores around the world. To people in the US (and perhaps other
regions), the extra credit card fields might look a little odd. There's
a current bug open (bug #527961) about this and we're working with
7digital to figure out how to reduce the confusion (7digital hosts the
payment process). Also, 7digital is a UK company so that's probably why
fields are defaulting to the UK.

Eventually, we will transition most of the music store processes to a
more customized user interface built by the Ubuntu One team. I'm
currently planning that process. When this is complete, we will have
much greater control and be able to implement tighter integration with
the desktop (like locale settings). I'm going to mark this as a wishlist
item to better represent locale dessktop settings.

Today, though, customers like you can purchase music by leaving some of
the credit card fields blank (like start date) or login to PayPal with
your standard credentials to be routed to the correct locale.

[Bug 597233] Re: inbound video calls broken

2010-06-23 Thread Kamilion
Sorry to break into this bug; but I've been trying to get empathy
working with my work's PBXInAFlash server and I just can't seem to find
any reasonable configuration guide for setting up telepathy-sofiasip.

Can anyone provide a list of resources for configuring empathy with sip?

Right now I'm 'stuck' using the sflphone.org deb packages to get a
working softphone on lucid because I've never gotten ekiga to work
properly with my audio.

SFLPhone works really decently, just what I needed, they just got into
debian unstable a few days ago; so I'd love to see it end up in ubuntu's
repos.

It would be my preference to get proper docs for a empathy, as we've a
lot of lucid boxes that already have empathy telepathy-sofiasip
deployed but unconfigured.

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-06-23 Thread computer_freak_8
I have found a suitable work-around for my needs; I was one of the many
frustrated by this change, and yet another reason I feel that Ubuntu's
overall progress is decreasing.

I take no credit for figuring this out, but the post that helped me is here:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/nautilus-elementary-2311-now-with.html

I followed the instructions for adding the PPA, and then clicked Edit,
Customize toolbars I have configured mine as depicted here:
http://s636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/no1unorightnow/?action=viewcurrent=Screenshot-CustomizeToolbar.png

That configuration yielded this layout:
http://s636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/no1unorightnow/?action=viewcurrent=Screenshot-tmg-FileBrowser.png

I hope this works for others, too.

[Bug 597958] [NEW] Add a Run button to Ubuntu Software Center

2010-06-23 Thread RussianNeuroMancer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Add a Run button to Ubuntu Software Center. So if you run Software
Center and look for a program, there are several options: Install, Run,
Uninstall. No menus, no shortcuts, just Software Center. And you can go
further and add the ability to place shortcuts onto your desktop using
drag'n'drop. IMHO, if the program is called Software Center, it must
be able to do everything with software, and run it too.

Re: [Bug 597919] [NEW] soft lockup in find_audio_control_unit+0x2c/0x6 [snd_usb_audio]0

2010-06-23 Thread Martin Pool
On 24 June 2010 15:12, Martin Pool m...@canonical.com wrote:
OK, after digging in to this a bit more, it seems this problem happens
reliably when the device is connected via the builtin USB3.0/2.0/1.1
ports, either directly or via the USB hub in a Dell monitor.

The other message I see there is

xhci_hcd 000:02:00.0: ERROR no room on ep ring

If I connect this device to a USB2.0/1.1 port then it works ok
 (including playing sound.)

With USB Legacy Device Support turned off in the bios (which means
grub2 doesn't see the keyboard), then I instead get these errors:

usb 8-4: new full speed USB device using xhci_hcd and address 0
xhci_hcd :02:00.0: WARN: short transfer on control ep

xhci_hcd :02:00.0: WARN: Stalled endpoint

So it looks like a fairly reproducible bug somewhere in the
intersection of this motherboard, this USB device, and the lucid
kernel. I've also seen problems using the keyboard from the USB3
ports, but I'm haven't yet dug in to whether they're exactly the same.
Ask if you want more data.

With USB 3.0 Controller off, devices connected to those ports are
just not seen.
