[Bug 600716] [NEW] d-i does not refresh correctly after switching to a different console until a new page is displayed

2010-07-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Kubuntu Alternate AMD64 Maverick install on a VBox 64bit VM.

During the install, I switched over to tty2 to tail /var/log/syslog
while working on a possible problem. After switching back to tty1 to
continue watching the d-i UI, I discovered that the UI was not being
redrawn and was all but unreadable.

Screenshot attached.

This only seems to happen after switching to a different console and
back again, and no amount of subsequent switching seems to correct this.

once software installation completed, I swapped terminals once more and
this time the UI DID refresh... so perhaps this only occurs when
swapping terminals during activity? (maybe activity that involves a
progress bar?)

[Bug 600716] Re: d-i does not refresh correctly after switching to a different console until a new page is displayed

2010-07-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Ok... I think I got the header right now... :/

I retried this after package installation. On the Install Grub to boot
sector screen I switched to tty2 and back, and again, the screen was
the same vertical line mess as displayed in the screen shot.

From that point on, I still had vertical line mess until the end of the
install (only two Enter presses away).

[Bug 596127] Re: Ubuntu bugs not fixed

2010-07-01 Thread Daniel Stone
actually yes there is a test case I can log into
this is an actual machine build issue
maybe just for 64 builds but yes I have
noticed this on several machines

aside from bugs that I have filed...

in General

Any Release of Ubuntu should work
on a clean build

If Ubuntu does not support a build what happens?

dev:doc - ?

maybe reaching a milestone series or something similar

On some builds one or a couple builds ago they were
exceeding disc size

packaging/testing

And yes I did scatter the discussion
Cordially

[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

I also have found this behavior to be a problem for our soon to be 60
workstation 200 user LDAP/NFS environment. We are running Ubuntu
10.04/amd64, autofs mounted NFS with rootsquashing on.

My workaround is: In /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default add the following
before the /sbin/initctl ... line:

# create /gvfs if missing
[ ! -d /gvfs ] mkdir -m 1777 /gvfs
# create users gvfs mountpoint there
[ ! -d /gvfs/$USER ] sudo -u $USER mkdir -m 0700 /gvfs/$USER
# remove ~/.gvfs and create the symlink
sudo -u $USER rmdir ~/.gvfs
sudo -u $USER ln -s /gvfs/$USER ~/.gvfs

  Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Over the past two nights, firefox was upgraded from 3.0.x to 3.6.6 on
our Kubuntu 8.04.4 machines. Unfortunately, this upgrade broke the
interaction with the Java plugin that is installed. As a result, Firefox
no longer reports a Java plugin and pages containing Java cannot be
  viewed.

  Installed packages:
  firefox 3.6.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2
  sun-java6-plugin 6.20dlj-0ubuntu1.8.04

Despite being installed, about:plugins does not list the Java plugin.

  What I've tried so far:
  - Installing sun-java5-plugin as well = no change
  - Making a symbolic link from /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin.so to
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libjavaplugin.so = no change

2010-07-01 Thread ttoine
alsa-firmware from medibuntu can be uninstalled if linux-firmware
include all firmwares for audio sound cards.

As alsa-firmware is not distributed in restricted by Ubuntu, Medibuntu
hosts it with several other restricted codecs or applications. If
linux-firmware can replace it, the more simple is to notify Medibuntu to
delete alsa-firmware from their repository.

[Bug 591016] Re: DHCP does not work with iwl3945

2010-07-01 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Sander,

Indeed it looks like the fix is in the iwlwifi-2.6.git tree. The patch
however has not yet been applied to the upstream mainline tree, ie
Linus' tree -
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=summary
. The mainline builds are generated from Linus' tree, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds , so you will
unfortunately be unable to test this patch using the mainline builds at
the moment. For the time being, I'll try and build you a test kernel
with the patch applied. We can then keep an eye on the progress of the
patch into mainline, hopefully before 2.6.35 final. If it's looking
like it won't make it into 2.6.35 final, we can pursue other options.
Thanks.

[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot

I had the problem after installing NVIDIA proprietary driver. Deinstalling this

mentioned above virtual consoles did not work while NVIDIA proprietary driver
was installed.
This happend on a 64bit machine with installed 32bit linux.

I had the problem with installed 64bit linux and NVIDIA proprietary
driver too. I don't know if deinstalling NVIDIA proprietary driver could
be a solution for this - I tried reinstalling linux with 32 bit.

Regarding the outdated docs: I'll push this as a task for the Docs team.
I think the plan might be to move the documentation into the jockey

I agree that this would make more sense indeed.

Have you had any user input on the name?

Not me personally.

Rather than going for what is the most logical name, it would be
better for users if you gave it the name that they expect for this
sort of utility (the two don't always coincide!).

Well, in the end they expect their hardware to just work without
having to use such a tool at all :-)

Beyond that I can't give any input on usability testing, I'm afraid.

The ones from openprinting.org aren't displayed if you open Jockey

[Bug 597688] Re: Unable to print from Firefox or Thunderbird since installing Lucid

2010-07-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
Your error_log does not show any problem and if I set up a printer with
the same PPD as you are using, I get correct PostScript output and my HP
LaserJet P3005 (PostScript printer) prints it correctly.

Can you turn on the function to print error pages in your printer's
front panel menus? Perhaps some of the PostScript arriving at the
printer causes errors in the printer's PostScript interpreter. If you
get pages with error messages then, please post the messages here.

To try to get the printer working, change its driver with system-config-
printer (System - Administration - Printing). Try the foilowing
alternatives:

1. OKI C5900(PS)
2. Generic PCL 6/XL printer, Foomatic/pclcolor
3. Generic PCL 5c printer, Foomatic/hpijs

Do one or more of them make your printer print reliably?

[Bug 600728] [NEW] gave up waiting for root device (temporary, intermittent)

2010-07-01 Thread Forest
Public bug reported:

My Lucid installation sometimes fails to boot, dropping me instead into
a BusyBox shell. The error message looks like this:

Gave up wiating for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/01234567-89ab-cdef-0123-456789abcdef does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs) _

My root= line contains the correct uuid. (I masked it in the error
message above.)

Adding a rootdelay= of a couple minutes seems to make it fail less
often. This is not a viable solution, because a couple minutes is way
to long to have to wait, because it doesn't always help, and because
booting used to work just fine with no wait.

If I wait a few minutes and type 'exit' at the (initramfs) prompt, the
system boots. Sometimes I have to try this a few times before it works.

This bug is distinct from bug 360378, because in my case, the system is
able to boot if I wait long enough. (Note the comments in bug 360378
stating that rootdelay doesn't help there.)

The problem is clearly not because my disk is taking too long to become
ready. My root, /boot, and boot sector are all on the same disk. If
the disk wasn't ready, the system would not have been able to load GRUB
or reach the BusyBox shell.

This seems to be a regression. My system booted consistently in early
Intrepid kernels and in releases earlier than Intrepid. The problem
first showed up late in the Intrepid release cycle, presumably after a
kernel upgrade.

I was using GRUB 1 when the problem first appeared. It still exists
after upgrading to GRUB 2.

[Bug 514869] Re: Bulgarian keyboard layout does not match the standard

2010-07-01 Thread Kamus
am not sure but according to bulgarian symbols included in xkb package
under Ubuntu Lucid:

// Version 2.0
// The following variants are defined in this file:
// bds - the BDS keyboard layout compliant with the proposed
// Bulgarian state standard BDS 5237:2006
// phonetic - Bulgarian phonetic layout with traditional position of
//  the letters.
// bas_phonetic - the phonetic keyboard layout compliant with the
// proposed Bulgarian state standard BDS 5237:2006
// latin - an extended variant of the QWERTY layout with symbols
// Bulgarian users will type while the keyboard is in Latin mode.
// The reasons behind the layout of the symbols in levels 3 and 4 are
// explained in http://arxiv.org/abs/0905.0484 (in Bulgarian).

Please could you check if this behaviour is still occuring under Ubuntu
Lucid?

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-07-01 Thread Matt Price
Zach, sorry for the delay. so far no real help from realtek though they
are at least responding, and I think they want to help. I'm attaching
the tarball they sent me with a new version -- it makes no difference to
me but might make some difference to others. They say they can't
reproduce the bug with powertop, though that seems unlikely to me.
Anyway I have asked them to subscribe to this bug and am also writing to
the powertop list asking for pointers... this is pretty frustrating but
maybe it will eventually get resolved.

Here are the instructions they sent me:

Please find the latest RTL8191SE Linux driver source in the attachment and
try again.
You should clear previous drive or inbox driver first after you install this
driver source.
The previous driver will be stored within
/lib/modules/2.6.XXX/kernel/driver/staging.
Please remove r8192se_pci.ko files by following command.
1. sudo su (you should input you root password after it)
2. find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec ls -l {} \;
3. find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec rm {} \;

After, You could execute find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec ls -l
{} \; to confirm it's clear properly.
And then, install this driver source as below steps. Don't forget to extract
this package before you install it.
1. sudo su
2. make
3. make install
4. reboot
5. ./wlan0up or ./wlan1up

-

they also suggested installing the new firmware before building the
module -- this is easy, just move the old /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE folder
somewhere safe, and replace it with the firmware/RTL8192SE folder you
find in the tarball after extraction.

hope that helps..

[Bug 600729] [NEW] Gparted not usable on fakeraid arrays

2010-07-01 Thread RonParent
Public bug reported:

Common to Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9, Gparted will not see or perform any
functions on Fakeraid arrays. The biggest impediment and the one most a
problem is that unless the target partition(s) is pre-formatted with
gparted run in an earlier version of the OS the installof 10.04 or Mint
9 will fail. There are work arounds, but, the average user with only
cursory knowledge of raid will not be able to cope. Of note, the
selection of manual partitioning in the installer will see the existing
raid partition and permit installation to one selected as long as you
don't try to format it. A note that pertains primarily to the installer
is that by selecting advance in step 8 you will be offered the option of
installing the grub boot loader to the MBR of the raid, but. despite
that an error ensued and I had to proceed with completing the install
without a boot loader.

I doubt that the problem exist with gparted itself or dmraid. More
likely is that some boot function in the current OS's negates the
ability of gparted to see raid drives. Once installed, the
interoperability of the current OS's with raids is much improved. The
raid partitions are, for example, are seen and easily mounted in
nautilus. Needless to say, don't expect do be able to use gparted to
modify or create any raid partitions.

[Bug 521029] Re: Open terminal menu shortcut becomes invalid when a folder is selected

2010-07-01 Thread SiegeLord
Okay, I think I managed to work out a solution to this. What I think
happens is that this extension adds two separate action (one a
background action, that you can invoke via the File menu if you are
selecting nothing; and a file action, that you can invoke when you
select a folder). The problem is that the extension assigns both actions
the same action type, which I think confuses Nautilus. I made a patch to
call the file version of the action something different. The patch seems
to work fine for me.

Here are some instructions for users who want to try this:

First, install the build dependencies for the extension:

sudo apt-get build-dep nautilus-open-terminal

Then, fetch the source:

mkdir nautilus-open-terminal
cd nautilus-open-terminal
apt-get source nautilus-open-terminal
cd nautilus-open-terminal-0.18

At this point, download my patch and put it into that folder (nautilus-
open-terminal/nautilus-open-terminal-0.18/). Then do this:

patch -p1 openterminal_patch.diff
dch -l custom Open terminal with folder selected fix.
dpkg-buildpackage -b -us -uc -rfakeroot

After the package has built, you just install it in your favourite way.
From the command line it'll be (the .deb file might be different if
you're not on 64 bits):

dpkg -i ../nautilus-open-terminal_0.18-1custom1_amd64.deb

Now you have to restart nautilus. I do it by issuing this:

killall -9 nautilus
nautilus

The nautilus should now have the fixed open terminal extension.

I get with 01.07.10 release a lot of regression in search:

- in the application places, the match seems only to be done on Most Used.
- when I remove the last character from the search field, it seems not being
reset (I only have the matching to last letter)

[Bug 600728] Re: gave up waiting for root device (temporary, intermittent)

2010-07-01 Thread Forest
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

- I was using GRUB 1 when the problem first appeared. It still exists
- after upgrading to GRUB 2.
+ I was using GRUB 1 when the problem first appeared. It still exists after
