[Bug 600716] [NEW] d-i does not refresh correctly after switching to a different console until a new page is displayed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer Kubuntu Alternate AMD64 Maverick install on a VBox 64bit VM. During the install, I switched over to tty2 to tail /var/log/syslog while working on a possible problem. After switching back to tty1 to continue watching the d-i UI, I discovered that the UI was not being redrawn and was all but unreadable. Screenshot attached. This only seems to happen after switching to a different console and back again, and no amount of subsequent switching seems to correct this. ** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: iso-testing -- d-i does not refresh correctly after switching to a different console until a new page is displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600716 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok... I think I got the header right now... :/ I retried this after package installation. On the Install Grub to boot sector screen I switched to tty2 and back, and again, the screen was the same vertical line mess as displayed in the screen shot. [Bug 591016] Re: DHCP does not work with iwl3945
Hi Sander, Indeed it looks like the fix is in the iwlwifi-2.6.git tree. The patch however has not yet been applied to the upstream mainline tree, ie Linus' tree - http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=summary . The mainline builds are generated from Linus' tree, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds , so you will unfortunately be unable to test this patch using the mainline builds at the moment. For the time being, I'll try and build you a test kernel with the patch applied. We can then keep an eye on the progress of the patch into mainline, hopefully before 2.6.35 final. If it's looking like it won't make it into 2.6.35 final, we can pursue other options. Phil Bull [2010-07-01 11:12 -]: Regarding the outdated docs: I'll push this as a task for the Docs team. I think the plan might be to move the documentation into the jockey package itself (IIRC, it's kept in ubuntu-docs at the moment). I agree that this would make more sense indeed. Have you had any user input on the name? Not me personally. Rather than going for what is the most logical name, it would be better for users if you gave it the name that they expect for this sort of utility (the two don't always coincide!). [Bug 600728] [NEW] gave up waiting for root device (temporary, intermittent)
Public bug reported: My Lucid installation sometimes fails to boot, dropping me instead into a BusyBox shell. The error message looks like this: Gave up wiating for root device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/01234567-89ab-cdef-0123-456789abcdef does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) _ My root= line contains the correct uuid. (I masked it in the error message above.) Adding a rootdelay= of a couple minutes seems to make it fail less often. This is not a viable solution, because a couple minutes is way to long to have to wait, because it doesn't always help, and because booting used to work just fine with no wait. If I wait a few minutes and type 'exit' at the (initramfs) prompt, the system boots. Sometimes I have to try this a few times before it works. This bug is distinct from bug 360378, because in my case, the system is able to boot if I wait long enough. (Note the comments in bug 360378 stating that rootdelay doesn't help there.) The problem is clearly not because my disk is taking too long to become ready. My root, /boot, and boot sector are all on the same disk. If the disk wasn't ready, the system would not have been able to load GRUB or reach the BusyBox shell. This seems to be a regression. My system booted consistently in early Intrepid kernels and in releases earlier than Intrepid. The problem first showed up late in the Intrepid release cycle, presumably after a kernel upgrade. I was using GRUB 1 when the problem first appeared. It still exists after upgrading to GRUB 2. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gave up waiting for root device (temporary, intermittent) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600728 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic
Zach, sorry for the delay. so far no real help from realtek though they are at least responding, and I think they want to help. I'm attaching the tarball they sent me with a new version -- it makes no difference to me but might make some difference to others. They say they can't reproduce the bug with powertop, though that seems unlikely to me. Anyway I have asked them to subscribe to this bug and am also writing to the powertop list asking for pointers... this is pretty frustrating but maybe it will eventually get resolved. Here are the instructions they sent me: Please find the latest RTL8191SE Linux driver source in the attachment and try again. You should clear previous drive or inbox driver first after you install this driver source. The previous driver will be stored within /lib/modules/2.6.XXX/kernel/driver/staging. Please remove r8192se_pci.ko files by following command. 1. sudo su (you should input you root password after it) 2. find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec ls -l {} \; 3. find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec rm {} \; After, You could execute find /lib/modules/ -name r8192se_*.ko -exec ls -l {} \; to confirm it's clear properly. And then, install this driver source as below steps. Don't forget to extract this package before you install it. 1. sudo su 2. make 3. make install 4. reboot 5. ./wlan0up or ./wlan1up - they also suggested installing the new firmware before building the module -- this is easy, just move the old /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE folder somewhere safe, and replace it with the firmware/RTL8192SE folder you find in the tarball after extraction. hope that helps.. ** Attachment added: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0525.2010.tar.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51243547/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0525.2010.tar.gz -- [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 600729] [NEW] Gparted not usable on fakeraid arrays
Public bug reported: Common to Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9, Gparted will not see or perform any functions on Fakeraid arrays. The biggest impediment and the one most a problem is that unless the target partition(s) is pre-formatted with gparted run in an earlier version of the OS the installof 10.04 or Mint 9 will fail. There are work arounds, but, the average user with only cursory knowledge of raid will not be able to cope. Of note, the selection of manual partitioning in the installer will see the existing raid partition and permit installation to one selected as long as you don't try to format it. A note that pertains primarily to the installer is that by selecting advance in step 8 you will be offered the option of installing the grub boot loader to the MBR of the raid, but. despite that an error ensued and I had to proceed with completing the install without a boot loader. I doubt that the problem exist with gparted itself or dmraid. More likely is that some boot function in the current OS's negates the ability of gparted to see raid drives. Once installed, the interoperability of the current OS's with raids is much improved. The raid partitions are, for example, are seen and easily mounted in nautilus. Needless to say, don't expect do be able to use gparted to modify or create any raid partitions. ** Affects: community.linuxmint.com Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gparted not usable on fakeraid arrays https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600729 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 521029] Re: Open terminal menu shortcut becomes invalid when a folder is selected
Okay, I think I managed to work out a solution to this. What I think happens is that this extension adds two separate action (one a background action, that you can invoke via the File menu if you are selecting nothing; and a file action, that you can invoke when you select a folder). The problem is that the extension assigns both actions the same action type, which I think confuses Nautilus. I made a patch to call the file version of the action something different. The patch seems to work fine for me. Here are some instructions for users who want to try this: First, install the build dependencies for the extension: sudo apt-get build-dep nautilus-open-terminal Then, fetch the source: mkdir nautilus-open-terminal cd nautilus-open-terminal apt-get source nautilus-open-terminal cd nautilus-open-terminal-0.18 At this point, download my patch and put it into that folder (nautilus- open-terminal/nautilus-open-terminal-0.18/). Then do this: patch -p1 openterminal_patch.diff dch -l custom Open terminal with folder selected fix. dpkg-buildpackage -b -us -uc -rfakeroot After the package has built, you just install it in your favourite way. From the command line it'll be (the .deb file might be different if you're not on 64 bits): dpkg -i ../nautilus-open-terminal_0.18-1custom1_amd64.deb Now you have to restart nautilus. I do it by issuing this: killall -9 nautilus nautilus The nautilus should now have the fixed open terminal extension. ** Patch added: openterminal_patch.diff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51243659/openterminal_patch.diff -- Open terminal menu shortcut becomes invalid when a folder is selected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521029 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 600728] Re: gave up waiting for root device (temporary, intermittent)
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: My Lucid installation sometimes fails to boot, dropping me instead into a BusyBox shell. - I was using GRUB 1 when the problem first appeared.
