And an interesting one too, with lots of wefts and weaves. Am trying to put my thoughts down and may have some catching up to do. so forgive some general top posts , some bit is lower down. @ CDAC - government or not one must remember that they have done stuff that pushed multi lingual computing quite far, before , i think, even open source really caught on. A case in point is the Leap and ileap cd's which enabled typing in many indian langauges.Am not sure of the history of the inscript keyboard (Gora may know) but i think CDAC developed the inscript layout . For those of us who use hindi this is a super boon - compared the typewriter keyboard layout, @ BOSS Linux - am not sure of the investments and the outputs but another good thing about CDAC and Boss linux is their presence at many IT events. The free CD's people may or may not use but what it does is give publicity not just to linux but to multi language computing. There was a time when they were ahead of the curve, unfortunately as with many Govt and non govt projects its all probably personality and motivation dirven and some other enthu folks must have been posted to their equivalent of kaalapani and thats the end of their before the curve production. @ NRC-FOSS - am wondering if there are any on this list - i knew one person from a lug list and this guy was a pain the the unmentionables and even after joining FOSS has this demeaning condescending attitude that is not good for anything leave alone FOSS. And if he is reflective of NRC_FOSS the i think its better to leave them out of anything. Am not sure what NRC-FOSS is upto but never hear of them much , maybe because they are south india based, so any south indian ubunturos have any idea what they are upto. yes it becomes much more murkier , is there a way to tap into these sources of funding and use it the way we want it . Yes there is no guarantee that this org or initiative will not land up in the same state for worse or good , it very easy pointing fingers and saying holier than though attitude. Do you see a way out shall we just ignore these thought process. There are ways - most of them are under the table and in those cases you need not develop anything, Under the table also gaurantees that non delivery on time will increase your budget for yet more non delivery. I personally feel that its easier to push the govt agencies to deliver rather than look to generate funds . This is true for core sectors but for software am not sure under what model the govt operates best. A compairision between NASA / NSA (USA) and DRDO (India)and what they have delivered in terms of products software would clearly indicate the gap. What gora says in relevant - how much has CDAC every contributed back. Probably not much. In a discussion with CDAC and one other related government agency at a Delhi LUG annual do (forget the name now) there was this technology being promoted by the government to promoted distributed computing in villages. The problem was not the tech (which was fairly good) but the licenses. The Govt agency has some rule that if the govt spends money on something they cannot give it an open license, they cannot give the code away because its their property? - Don't ask me why, but thats what our government is about. ok i get the answer here , but how? form one more org ? I kind of disagree, yes we need some more creative groups but we also need to pressurize the government in doing and delivering better, what it has taken a mandate to do. It has to be concurrent. The govt has immense resources and if we leave them they we all know an idle mind is a dangerous workshop - we will end up with resources and creativity being spent to spy on people (like under the UID) or on a couple of crore just for tea and snacks for uncommon wealth organizers. We need a pressure group to force policy change as well as for the govt to deliver concrete action. As I mentioned above, that's the answer. There has to be some way to break the log jam. How many among you are researchers/academicians? How many among you have actually researched and implemented anything new? Strange question - and allow me to say so , a bit rude, . Also i don't have too high an opinion about researchers and academicians who write, read and talk a lot but have very liitle to show in terms of new. Would rather look for the doers. And then the doers who also write and read. ** Loco has nothing to do with new ideas - it its about making something more applicable for a localised community and there is not point in re-inventing a wheel because a wheel can't really be invented again. I have no idea how old your graphics chip is, but it's a safe bet to assume that it will work since *alot* of PC's come with intel chips, you will get the hardware accelerated version of Unity. However, if that doesn't work out, you will get the 2D (Qt?) version of Unity without those fancy effects. Thanks a ton Ram. Glad that you gave an excellent overview of the existing scenario. However, my contention is simple and again I reiterate that it is not the localization efforts alone that matter. It is creating something new that matters. And we sadly lack in either initiative. Let me give you the example of Linux Mint. Apart from being an excellent derivative, the existing system allows a person to subsist on 'donations' while churning out the distro. We cannot blame the system because we are unwilling to change it. I could go on and on regarding lack of facilities, broadband, donation support etc but these are just excuses. What is required instead is a strong will to do something. While CDAC and others have done a yeoman's service (and I am not discounting it) but it's important to be able to make a splash. I don't see BOSS Linux being considered on DistroWatch, for example, to highlight the achievement in the community. In same vein, DRDO is justified in it's efforts but creating something from ground up is stupidity unless they have a crack team of developers. But then this mailing list is not about BOSS/DRDO/Localization. basic PDF editor for Ubuntu - tips?
Hi, could someone please tell me what they recommend as a basic PDF editor with GUI for Ubuntu? Basically I would like to A) be able to edit the meta information in an existing PDF (saving a webpage to PDF via print in Ubuntu 8.04 does a great job, but the title of the webpage isn't carried over into the PDF's tag info - it's all blank), and B) to be able to delete a page from the PDF. I've looked in Synaptic and seen PDF Editor there, but there are very mixed opinions about it in forums I looked at. You may what to have a look a pdfmod. It does all thing you asked. edit title, authour keywords, add/remove page reorder rotate pages. But you cant edit a page. I use pdfedit for that. It also supports suspend to both. It looks like the Ubuntu build disables splash support since Ubuntu uses plymouth. As long as it's a property of the source packaging branch, it can be used to find the revid. So a specific revision property can work (a boolean saying: build this), a field in any file in debian dir will work too. Whatever works, as long as it can't be changed for a given revision. If you are running out of power before the hibernate finishes, then one of two things is wrong: 1) Your gas gauge is not properly calibrated and is reporting that you have more remaining power than you actually do 2) Your dead battery threshold where you go to hibernate is set too low Raising that threshold will fix the problem. Actually no, my laptop battery's full charge state can last for an hour, but even after showing 0%, it can stay in suspend-to-RAM mode for more than half a day. I haven't tried letting it run longer though. Then your gas gauge is wrong and you either need to recalibrate it or get a new battery. From the laptops that I have seen, it seems normal to drain about 1% of capacity per hour in suspend ( give or take ), so if it lasts half a day, then that 0% reading is quite a ways off. Qt3 and LSB compliance
It would be good to move Qt 3 from main to universe, it's unmaintained upstream, is a duplication of another library (Qt 4) and is not actively used by anything much. Reverse Build Depends: Package: avahi Qt 3 bindings can be dropped Package: cppunit Qt 3 GUI can be dropped Package: djvulibre Qt 3 GUI can be dropped Package: qt-x11-free Package: qwt Qt 3 widgets can be dropped Package: scribus can be moved to universe Package: unixodbc Qt 3 bindings can be droped Package: wvstreams Qt 3 bindings can be droped This leaves one dependency, lsb-desktop. LSB upstream is pretty inactive and doesn't seem to be updating to remove this obsolete library. Do we care about about LSB to keep Qt 3 in main? Claws mail build fails because it can't find /lib/libgpg-error.la
I've spent a couple of days on and off chasing an annoying bug in Claws Mail: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/claws-mail/+bug/724416 I've got a hint of a fix from upstream[1], which I'm trying to build and test, but unfortunately, there's a little bit of yak shaving first. The unchanged Natty package does not build for me either locally in an sbuild, or in a PPA. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/65408435/buildlog_ubuntu-natty-amd64.claws-mail_3.7.8-1ubuntu4~ppa0_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz Claws was last built in the archive six weeks ago. Since then, libgpg-error was rebuilt, and I think the linker changes landed. I don't know whether either of those changes are related to the build failures in Claws, but it at least seems related. Note that there's a /usr/lib/libgpg-error.so file and a /usr/lib/libgpg-error.la file, but no /lib/libgpg-error.la file. I haven't yet been able to figure out why Claws' build wants to find it in /lib instead of /usr/lib. I built the unstable version in a sid chroot just fine. I'm posting this message to see if the build failure rings a bell with anybody. OpenMCL hasn't been updated since Dapper. And it's called CCL now, by the way. It has been removed from Debian, and then deleted from Ubuntu during feisty development cycle. ABCL doesn't have an entry in Aptitude. Hasn't been packaged by anyone - there is the ITP bug reported on the Debian BTS though: http://bugs.debian.org/608466 GCL is so old, it doesn't export the package :CL (and therefore can't work with Quicklisp). We have the most recent version packaged, also natty has the same version that Debian ships (it has an astounding number of 87 revisions). It may be that gpgme1.0 (source package of libgpgme11-dev) needs a rebuild to pick up the new path. They may fail to be included for various reasons, including: the developers may decide that the feature is technically incorrect; there may not be sufficient resources to implement the feature; or the feature may not be implemented on schedule, with a decision taken that landing the feature after feature freeze is too risky. On the other hand, since Martin is most definitely familiar with all of this, and you say he's implementing the jockey side of things, it's likely that he's already thought about all of this and has a FFe request planned (if needed). As manufacturers are told that they have to make LSB packages (so that one package fits all distros), the full LSB needs to stay in main. Manufacturers have for example the liberty to ship a GUI tool with the driver. Therefore we need to keep the LSB. That's a complete non sequitur. Jockey supports installing lots of things that aren't part of main... in fact, that's its primary use case. Problem is already solved. pitti told me that Universe is activated in default installations and so the printer drivers do not have any problems to pull the lsb package. Quanto ao direct rendering, significa renderização direta, em outras palavras (na sua língua =D) afirma que é a sua placa de vídeo que está processando os gráficos 3D. Acredito que seja alguma incompatibilidade do driver com a sua placa. Às vezes as fabricantes atualizam drivers por causa das placas de vídeo mais novas, porém as placas mais antigas que sofrem com essa atualização. Sugiro então procurar no site da AMD/ATI um driver mais antigo compatível com a HD3200. Eu tenho uma reunião agora, e quando voltar vejo isso. Então Ávila e Jenny, instalem o sun-java6-jre: sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre Daí digite: java -version Veja se aparece algo como: $ java -version java version 1.6.0_22 Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_22-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 17.1-b03, mixed mode) Se não aparecer nada dizendo que é o open-jdk deve ser o java da sun mesmo. Caso contrário, entramos naquele problema de duas ou mais VM's Java instaladas. Neste caso: update-alternatives --config java obs: sem sudo Deve aparecer algo como: Existem 2 opções para a alternativa java (fornecendo /usr/bin/java). SeleçãoCaminho Prioridade Estado 0/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java 1061 modo automático 1/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java 1061 modo manual * 2/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java 63modo manual E escolha o java da sun, no meu caso, a opção 2. Para falar a verdade, eu não sei se é o java que executa arquivos .bin, se alguem da lista souber, avisa. Eu acredito que seja o java mesmo. Mas ainda tem o javaws, que também é uma opção para configurar através do update-alternatives. Então vá até o diretório onde está o instalador do ReceitaNet e execute: ./ReceitanetJava2010.02d_setup_linux.bin Com isso deve funcionar. Jenny, se vc ainda tiver aquele problema quando vc for instalar o sun-java6-jre (não foi possível obter trava), verifique se não está aberto o gerenciador de pacotes do Ubuntu (Synaptic), feche ele e tente novamente. Essa trava é um sistema de segurança para permitir apenas uma instância do gerenciador de pacotes (apt) instalando pacotes, para manter a integridade do seu sistema. Acho que não esqueci de nada. Em primeiro lugar, como tentou abrir o arquivo e o que aconteceu, inclua mensagens de erro. A maneira mais fácil é simplesmente dar um duplo clique no arquivo e ele é aberto. [Ubuntu-BR] LVM - Quais os Prós e Contras ?
Pessoal, estou prestes a formatar a minha máquina. Há anos venho usando um /home que é passado de geração em geração. Sempre ouço falar muito bem do gerenciamento de volumes LVM e gostaria de saber de vocês se isso tá restrito mais a servidores ou poderia coloca-lo numa boa em meu desktop. É seguro ? Como particiono a primeira vista ? Um / e o resto LVM, ou o disco inteiro é LVM. Como faço o gerenciamento dessas partições ? Aumentar, diminuir partições tem de ser por uma interface texto do tipo fdisk ou há um system manager gráfico ? Como se lida com falhas ? Usa fsck da vida ? Porém, para o formato rar, se não me engano, tive que instalar pacotes específicos para conseguir extrair. O Marlon colocou uma lista bacana de pacotes a serem instalados para vc não ter problemas. Agora, quanto ao pedido de senha, são outros 500 vc tem que saber a senha de qualquer forma para conseguir extrair o conteúdo do arquivo. Sem ela, nem no Linux, nem no Windows, nem no Mac nem em outro qualquer S.O. vc conseguirá visualizar qualquer conteúdo de dentro do arquivo. Tulio, eu sou fundador do Backtrack no Brasil e nao vi nenhum post seu no nosso forum. Meu nickname e firebits e lhe aconselho que crie um login em www.backtrack-linux.org seçao forum em portugues. Voce vai postar sua duvida na seçao de hardware mas vou te antecipando que o Backtrack e um fork entre ubuntu 8.04 e debian 4 com sources proprios. Para começar se voce instalou o Backtrack como desktop e esta usando como desktop nao e de longe a melhor maneira. Backtrack foi feito em filesystem squadfs que e proprio para disposistivos removiveis. Ex: SD card e pendrive... Ou seja fazer pentest gerar o report entregar ao cliente e destruir o report. Se voce esta instalando Kmail, amarok e etc...sao sinais que voce esta usando com desktop. Eu nao usaria um desktop com varios virus, exploits, shellcodes... Resumindo: apenas use em pendrives e sd cards. Todo o repositorio do ubuntu 8.04 pode ser usado no BT mas o fork faz a quebra de compatibilidade em alguns aspectos. Procure por repositorios antigos ubuntu firebits ou Mauro Risonho. LVM é perfeitamente seguro, e excelentemente sem igual em desktop. De primeira instância, você pode deixar uma partição / e criar sobre LVM o seu /home. O disco não precisa ser todo LVM. A não ser que você queira. O Gerenciamento das partições é feito exatamente como se fosse uma partição msdos normal, mas ao mesmo tempo, como se fosse raid (o disco que você manipulará não é um disco físico, mas sim um array/volume), já que é feito através dos utilitários do lvm. Não sei se há um manager gráfico, mas os comandos são intuitívos e simples: Desmonta o filesystem, e redimensiona (por exemplo lvextend -l +7339 /dev/lvmdohamacker/home). Quanto a falhas, o LVM é seguro, mas os discos não. Você tem em LVM o modo linear (tipo JBOD), mirroring (tipo RAID 1) ou stripping (tipo RAID 0). Se você tem 10 discos no modo linear compondo um único volume e o disco número 2, por exemplo explodir, você estará em maus lençois. Agora, em critério de filesystem, já que você mencionou o fsck, ele continua o mesmo. Se usando partições msdos você tem /dev/sda2, no lvm você teria por exemplo /dev/lvmdohamacker/sda2. Continuaria sendo um dispositivo de bloco, que você manipularia igual antes, seja com fsck ou usando um dd para clonar... O que você quer fazer adicionando mais discos ao decorrer do tempo é justamente o que torna o LVM insubstituível... você pode ter adicionar os discos que precisar, seja lá qual for o tamanho deles, e gerenciar os espaços da forma que preferir (multiplos volumes, snapshots...)
