Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Grey on Black Bug.

2012-03-01 Thread Paul Gorski
Hello fellow testers,

Regarding Lubuntu PowerPC precise-desktop 20120301 -

- Macintosh eMac G4 800 MHz (ATI graphics) - Install failed.
Installer starts, installer screens dark, text nearly impossible to read.
Changing look and feel to Clearlooks and changing foreground color allows text
to be visible. However, installer stops at Keyboard layout.

- Macintosh iMac G3 400 MHz (ATI graphics) - Install failed.
CD boots to command prompt. (live video=ofonly doesn't help)

- Macintosh iBook G4 800 MHz (ATI graphics) - Installs and runs successfully.
Installs, but installer screens dark, text hard, but not impossible to read.
Changing look and feel to Clearlooks and changing foreground color allows text
to be visible.

Regarding Lubuntu PowerPC precise-alternate 20120301 -

- Macintosh eMac G4 800 MHz (ATI graphics) - Installs and runs successfully.
Note: installer screen was red, with blue highlights (thought it was the other
way around).
Note: text Lubuntu 12.04 is not centered on screen when booting, positioned
off-center, upper left quadrant of screen.

- Macintosh iMac G3 400 MHz (ATI graphics) - Install failed.
Installs, but boots to command prompt following install. Entering startx
returns: fglrx error, module not found, Framebuffer error.

Sincerely,
Paul Gorski

Hi lubuntueers,

I'm sending this to the full list as some of you are waiting to join testing.

Rafael has gotten a workaround for the problem where you could not read the
text on the dark screen [1] Yes, a lot of midnight oil burned, he has gotten a
patch made, Julien has got it uploaded and our new friend skaet has been true
to their word and has issued the re-spin command for the entire lubuntu suite.

As I write this, the new test iso's for the beta1 are arriving on
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/208/builds

I, and the QA team realise that is a nigh on impossible task for them all to be
tested before beta 1 RC freeze, but can I ask that you go 'hug' an RC and
confirm that this major bug is solved. We still have time to get the theme back
to our usual standards, it is more important whilst this is done that we ensure
there are no further gremlins hiding behind the dark screen.

As of now, there is the issue of ppc not installing on G3 Macs, we need that
verifying. A Fail to install is the worst bug that is possible. After it
installs, we can go bug fix :)

Oh, there is no rush... we need the results in by 12:00 UTC March 2012 - Just
check the 'artwork' on install works and report it back. Even by replying by
email to this thread will let us know if Beta 1 can proceed. Yes, not the usual
way of approving an RC and one we hope never to need again.

Regards,

Phill.

I don't think I can do much more for Abiword, since it looks it use GTK
its own way, I mean, that app doesn't respect the backboard function
when drawing (the background) and uses another controls. But I hope
fixing the GTK problem will solve Abiword issues at the same time.

BTW, no answer from GTK people yet. They're working on it.

ubiquity are upgradable on the 20120301 i386 live iso.

Right, Stéphane Graber fixed a last minute bug with the keyboard layout screen
in Ubiquity.

ubiquity (2.9.23) precise; urgency=low

  * ubi-console-setup: Revert most of the previous change but keep the
600ms timeout to avoid entering in a gtk main loop quit/start flood.
Also add some more checks of the current values to prevent the UI
from refreshing when not needed. (LP: #942560)
  * gtk_ui: Move the pending_quits handling code from being called right
after the call to main_quit() to right after the main loop actually
exits. This seems to help quite a bit with the race discovered in
    ubi-console-setup.

Ubuntu desktop and alternate images have been respun and I'm currently testing
them.

Newest images also includes a fix for Casper that broke, amongst other things,
the keyboard selection in the live environment. (LP #940908)

I'm going as fast as I can,

Lubuntu Beta 1

2012-03-01 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi,

firstly can I thank everyone who has gone far and beyond the call of duty
to get us from a critical bug on 12.04 to Beta 1 releases that install on
pretty much everything except G3 Power PC's.

The Beta 1's being released are:

1) i386
2) amd64
3) ppc

The amd64+mac family have had no testers, so a Beta 1 cannot be released.
If you know of someone with an Intel Mac, please do ask if they would be
willing to test.

On the lubuntu-qa mailing list [1] I am going to start some new threads.

1) i386 testing
2) amd64 testing
3) mac G3 testing
4) mac G4 testing
5) Non-pae testing (this is using the mini iso system for old chip-sets).

If we get testers for the Intel Mac, a thread will be started for that.
When entering comments, please remember to use the Reply to All option.

Once again, thank you to everyone who has got us this far. Lubuntu 12.04
will rock!

Phill.

Call for testing: MySQL security updates

2012-03-01 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Hi,

Since Oracle no longer publishes detailed information about security
vulnerabilities that are being fixed in MySQL, and their bug tracker is
no longer public, Ubuntu must now track upstream MySQL releases as
security updates.

MySQL 5.0.95 fixes the following CVEs:
CVE-2012-0075, CVE-2012-0087, CVE-2012-0101, CVE-2012-0102,
CVE-2012-0114, CVE-2012-0484, CVE-2012-0490.

MySQL 5.1.61 fixes the following CVEs:
CVE-2011-2262, CVE-2012-0075, CVE-2012-0112, CVE-2012-0113,
CVE-2012-0114, CVE-2012-0115, CVE-2012-0116, CVE-2012-0117,
CVE-2012-0118, CVE-2012-0119, CVE-2012-0120, CVE-2012-0484,
CVE-2012-0485, CVE-2012-0486, CVE-2012-0487, CVE-2012-0488,
CVE-2012-0489, CVE-2012-0490, CVE-2012-0491, CVE-2012-0492,
CVE-2012-0493, CVE-2012-0494, CVE-2012-0495, CVE-2012-0496.

For more information about the CVEs listed, please consult the January
2012 Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpujan2012-366304.html

Today, I have pushed updated MySQL 5.0.95 packages for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS,
and updated MySQL 5.1.61 packages for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 10.10,
Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 11.10 into the -proposed pocket. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed.

Please report any issues in the tracking bug:
https://launchpad.net/bugs/937869

If no issues are reported, I plan on releasing the packages as security
updates in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Marc.

Nicholas I would love to write a manual plan for testing software
center but currently I am completely raced off my feet. If I get some
down time I'll have a look at throwing something together.

in the meantime key tests should be:
 install a gui based app
ensure icon appears in the launcher
 sync to another pc/vm instance
install a 0$ app (or a paid for one that utilises the ppa system)
reinstall previous purchase on a second system
 removal of an app
ensure icon is removed from app launcher

That should give you a good ground work if I don't get time till the
release it out (fingers crossed I will though)

I wanted to assist with the testing so I attempted to download and run
checkbox but got this message when I tried to install it:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Oh, right!

This person is using 10.04 (LTS)

Might as well wait a couple of months. This means they will avoid
upgrading twice in quick succession, I would say.

I'd plug the offending machine into the network with a cable and do a
full update. If that still does not resolve the problem, try one of
 the newer kernels.

how do i try a new kernel in ubuntu 10.04? I thought it was updated
 automatically.

It is, but the newer kernel revisions are an optional install. From my
own post on the Ubuntu-Users list:

- - - - -

If you're still running Lucid, 10.04, and are having driver problems
or something, there are now 3 different newer kernels available.

The kernel contains wifi drivers and so on. The only main class of
driver it doesn't contain are graphics drivers for X.org - X contains
its own. However, some newer proprietary graphics drivers, e.g. from
nVidia, may require a newer kernel than Lucid's 2.6.32 to install and
work correctly. These kernels are thus a considerable boon for quite a
lot of reasons and may help 10.04 to remain useful for some time to
come yet. For instance, they are great if you don't like Unity and are
waiting for GNOME Shell to become a bit more mature, say. They aren't
just for servers.

They newer kernels are backported from 10.10 (Maverick), 11.04
(Natty) and 11.10 (Oneiric).

There are 3 different kernels in each family: one generic, one generic
with PAE support for 32-bit machines with 4GB or more of RAM, and one
for servers.

If you look in Synaptic (or the package manager of your choice), you
should see (for example):

linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty

and the matching linux-image-generic-pae-backport-natty and
linux-image-server-backport-natty.

There are also families ending -oneiric and -maverick.

From memory, the standard 10.04 kernel is version 2.6.32-xx where -xx
is the current build.

The Maverick series are 2.6.35-xx, Natty ones are 2.6.38-xx and the
Oneiric series are 3.0.0-xx.

If you install (say) linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty, you will
get the current build of 2.6.38-xx and it will be updated as newer
builds are sent out. You don't need to install a specific version - if
you do so, it will *not* be updated.

I have found that the PAE kernel will not boot on some Celeron
machines which have the PAE functionality disabled, so I recommend
against using it unless you know you will need support for = 4GB RAM.

I have resolved quite a few problems with these, including machines
that hang on shutdown rather than switch off, getting newer WLAN
chipsets going that did not work with the standard 10.04 kernel, and
supporting some Sony Vaio machines that will not boot older kernels
successfully.

The same kernels are also available in Mint 9, as it is based on Ubuntu 10.04.

getting a couple to play with (got a couple of ideas so far).

Same here. And I'm hoping to get an educational version when they come
out at the end of the year for my nieces. The way I understand it, the
first boards are targeted at developers so that they can build or port
apps. The idea is that when the educational version (which should come
with a case and manual as opposed to a bare board) is released, it will
have a fair number of apps.

developing window managers is way out of my range of understanding
currently, but it's something I'm keen to learn about :-)

It all depends on the language you're using. If you're using an
interpreted language, there's no difference (well, not too much). The
complexity comes when using a compiled language as you need to cross
compile. And of course, you need to test in an emulator or on the device
rather than direct on your dev box. See this blog post for an idea of
what is involved:

http://balau82.wordpress.com/2010/12/05/using-ubuntu-arm-cross-compiler-for-bare-metal-programming/

[ubuntu-uk] Networking Problem

2012-03-01 Thread Nigel Verity

Hi
I use a Linksys X2000 router which has a tendency to drop its internet
connection once or twice a day, although connections between the router and
clients stay active. This is, apparently, a common problem, but with no hard
and fast solution that I can ascertain.
The internet connection is re-established by rebooting the router, either using
the on/off switch, or remotely using the config pages. If I'm lucky I can then
access the internet again but, more often than not, I still have to reboot the
PC. The effect of this is clearly to re-initialise the PC's comms system. Does
anybody know of any functions I can call which will re-initialise comms without
having to reboot the PC?

You didn't mention whether you're using Ethernet or Wireless so I'll
assume the former.
I'd check what exactly stops working, i.e. DNS or maybe your lease
(I assume that you're using DHCP) hasn't expired and the system is
trying to use it but after reboot the router assigned the IP to another
computer already. Who knows.
What does your /etc/resolv.conf say when that happens?
What does ifconfig spit out?
If you're using Network Manager try restarting the service and if a
simply DHCP client, do the same.

Shortcut keys F1,F2,F3,F4 and overall

2012-03-01 Thread Petko
Hey guys , I recently came to the conclusion that the *Function* keys
,that are most accessible aren't really utilized . Some (a lot of) time
ago , when I was new to computers I saw them as some kind of unusable
appendix . Since then not much has changed (regarding OS defaults ) .
Which of the function keys do you use ( out of combinations , just the
straight up most efficient press of the key) ? I used three until recently :

F2 - rename
F5 - refresh
F11 - fullscreen
(and maaybe F1 - help)

Here's the idea : the first 4 func. keys are very accessible , not used
in writing , and 2 of them have no function what so ever by themselves .
Here's a couple of suggestions from me :

F1 - clearly stays help
F2 - users have learned it's rename , so it should stay rename (though
that's probably not the best function it can have)
F3 - Minimize window - everybody does it constantly , the buttons for
minimize are little , I personally hate compound shortcuts
(alt+ctrl+shift+asdf to minimize (meaning I don't want to touch more
than one button for one of the most used actions) )
F4 - how has no one made F4 default for closing windows just boggles my
mind - why twist your hand to press alt , when F4 can't possibly have a
better use .

I'm with those settings now and it's much better than the defaults . For
F4 - of course alt+F4 should continue working alongside F4 , because
anyone new would get confused , but that doesn't mean it shouldn't get
implemented .

Second point of discussion (the and overall part of the thread) : I
need some response from developers: If I create a wiki page in Ubuntu
dedicated to discussing default settings (because I think there's much
room for improvement) , would its contents be taken into account . The
idea is that a whiteboard is needed to discuss this topic (there's too
many details for a mailing list in my opinion) , and I'm convinced that
the topic should have a centralized resource (so there's no repeated
discussions , and people can pick up where others left off ) .

And overall - any feedback would be appreciated , I really want to push
the development in that area a bit (default shortcuts/settings) .

Petko

PS: not a proposal for implementation , but a hint for whoever might
like it : F12 for xset dpms force off (turn screen off)

Keep in mind also that there are likely applications using these keys
for application-specific purposes. I'm of the opinion that any
system-wide shortcuts should involve a modifier key. I really like how
Unity is coalescing around the use of super, personally.

F4 - how has no one made F4 default for closing windows just boggles my

Because reaching too high when aiming for '4' should never close what
you're working on and potentially cause a loss of work.

The wiki isn't really conducive of back and forth conversation. It can
be used to store the work in progress as the exact details are worked
out, but the conversation itself would be better off in the forums or
IRC. Brainstorm might also be a better place for this whole thing until
there is some agreement on it.

Confusion RE: UI Freeze Rules

2012-03-01 Thread Rodney Dawes
Hi All,

On the wiki page[1], it is stated that the UI and user-visible
strings are frozen for applications which are installed by default.
My own understanding was that this was for all apps in the archive, as
was the general understanding of others when I asked in IRC.

However, as we (Ubuntu One) are currently working on various changes
in our applications, some of which are not part of the default install,
this point of confusion has been brought up, and I think we need to
clarify what it means exactly. We have 2 options:

1) The Wiki is correct, and we need to communicate to everyone that
this is the case, and that exceptions are not required for applications
which are not part of the default install (until later in the cycle).

2) The Wiki is wrong, and we need to fix it, and continue on with the
presumption that many of us have been working with.

What do the rest of you think?

It was my understanding that the primary purpose of U/I and string freeze was
to allow documentation developers and translators time to get their work done.

It is also to enforce a coordination requirement between the person proposing
the change and the documentation team so that if the proposed change affects
documentation or (particularly) screen shots they can be updated.

None of translations applies to Universe.

There are probably very few, not installed by default applications covered in
documentation (although I expect Ubuntu One related packages would likely be
documented). This aspect of the freeze is important and shold apply to all
packages even if it's a simple Hey, I need to change X, Oh no screen shots
of X in the documentation so it's fine exchange.

So I'd always thought it included all packages although exception approval for
some would end up being very light weight.

This was also what I thought and what I think we should do, it's easy

update a set of screenshots anyway.

Re: [RFC] AUFS disabled for 12.04

2012-03-01 Thread Gary Poster

Hi.

aufs was reliable for us on Oneiric when creating ephemeral lxc
instances based on an underlying template. The most recent overlayfs
issue that we discovered is today's
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/944386

The summary is that, within an overlayfs, this fails:

gary@garubtosh:~/tmp$ touch 3
gary@garubtosh:~/tmp$ chmod 0444 3
gary@garubtosh:~/tmp$ ln 3 4
ln: failed to create hard link `4' = `3': Operation not permitted

That error makes xvfb unable to start, in this particular case.

I'd feel a *lot* more comfortable if aufs were still around, in case we
end up not finding the next overlayfs bug until it is too late for our
project's delivery.

Thank you,

Gary

How about we omit them from the sponsor overview until that's sorted

That'd help us focus on clearing out the remaining 50 or so.

I used to use this often as a user, before the time of ppa's.. I think
perhaps it's been made redudant since if your wanting to run/test
software not on your distro you can *usually* get it in a ppa built for
your version of ubuntu. This is certainly easier for most folks. For
anyone else who is looking to do a real backport, prevu isn't really the
tool for them. Very nice tool, I appreciated and used it before it was
in the archive even. My 2 cents,

Re: ClickPads and Click Actions

2012-03-01 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
Chase, I would try and make the use case of clicking and dragging along
with 2 finger clicking work. The other scenario could possibly be worked
out via a ppa or script for users who wish to change or otherwise enable
the split clickpad. I personally don't like the split clickpad idea and
I think making things standard for all users would be best. Aka,

1 finger tap/click = left click
2 finger tap/click = right click
multitouch click and drag = just works :-)

It's late and I'm failing to remember.. is tap to click configurable for
this? IE, I can tap the clickpad for a click, or I have to depress the
clickpad to register a click.

Nicholas

On 02/29/2012 04:11 PM, Chase Douglas wrote:
 Hi all,

I'm sending this to both ubuntu-devel and ubuntu-desktop to try to get
 a larger pool of feedback.

I recently added ClickPad support in Precise. This is automatically
picked up by most Synaptics and all Apple Macbook trackpads. It will
soon be picked up by more Synaptics trackpads and the Apple Magic
Trackpad. ClickPad support entails the ability to press the trackpad
with one finger and perform a drag by moving a second finger.

The problem we face is that currently ClickPad support conflicts
with click actions. Click actions is the term for supporting right
button behavior by clicking on the trackpad with two fingers. This has
been supported for years, and has helped people perform right clicks
on clickpad devices before the clickpad support landed in Precise.
Unfortunately, we can't have clickpad support and click action support
at the same time yet (ran out of time for Precise).

One feature that hasn't been turned on by default yet is a right
button area. On Synaptics trackpads, the lower right area of the
trackpad is marked as a right button. If you enable the right button
area and then press with one finger in the area, a right button click
 will be emitted.

We can enable the right button area by default for all clickpads. The
problem is that Apple trackpads do not have a marking for a right
button area, and OS X doesn't provide such a feature. People coming
from OS X will have to figure out that we a) don't have click action
support, and b) if you click in the lower right area you will perform
a right button click. However, people coming from OS X also expect to
be able to click and drag with two fingers...

 Our options are:

 * Disable clickpad support by default
 * Enable clickpad support, but disable right button area by default
 * Enable clickpad support and right button area by default

We can have a different default for Apple trackpads and everything else.

The next Precise kernel will enable clickpad support for all known
trackpads by default, but right button area remains disabled. Until
then, you can manually enable support by finding your trackpad device
id using 'xinput', then running the following scripts:

 http://people.canonical.com/~cndougla/enable-clickpad.sh
 http://people.canonical.com/~cndougla/enable-rightbutton.sh

If you have tried all the options and have an opinion on which option
we should take, please send your thoughts.

 Thanks!

p/ balancear as requisições. Nosso link de internet aumentou p/ 100Mbps e o
servidor atual praticamente senta por diversas vezes. Alguém tem alguma
dica ou tutorial? Não consegui achar nada claro que me orientasse por aí na
web.

Desde já agradeço!

[Bug 944546] [NEW] StringIndexOutOfBoundsException in HelpFormatter.findWrapPos

2012-03-01 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

This bug has been fixed upstream in version 1.3 Could you look at
backporting this fix or updating to the latest version?

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLI-193

You should be able to get it to throw with a call like this:

findWrapPos( hello, 3, 0 ); // should return -1

The exception gets thrown whenever the passed-in string does not contain
any spaces, tabs, or newlines. It looks like line 914 was also expecting
line 908 to have a .

Also, I think there are other bugs. In this call:

findWrapPos( hell\noo\ngoodbye, 6, 7 ); // should return 8

we want it to short circuit and return the first newline if there is one
in the substring starting at 7 with width 6 (o\noo\ng), and so it
should return the index of the first '\n', which is 8. However, on lines
876 and 877, it's doing pos = width, instead of pos =
startPos+width, so it won't return, and it will end up (incorrectly, I
think) returning the index of the second newline's position. And once
you fix lines 876 and 877, it's going to return 9 instead of 8, which I
think is incorrect. The other return statements return pos, not pos+1,
and I think line 879 should do the same.

scanner

2012-03-01 Thread romain.minne

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) Beta 1 Released.

2012-03-01 Thread Kate Stewart
The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the first beta release of Ubuntu
12.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products.

Codenamed Precise Pangolin, 12.04 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition
of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard
at work throughout this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

This release introduces a new set of images for the ARMv7 hard float
ABI, denoted as armhf. There are still some armel images around, as
we finish the migration, but 12.04 for ARM will be based on armhf.

The technology that allows GPUs to go into a very low power consumption
state when the GPU is idle (RC6) is now enabled by default for
Sandy Bridge systems, which should result in considerable power savings
when this stage is activated.

The CD image size has been adjusted to 703MB to squeeze in every
bit of package goodness we can on the installation CD images.

With Ubuntu 12.04, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and
Ubuntu Studio also reached Beta 1 status today.

Ubuntu Changes
--

Some of the new features now available are:

 * A new way to quickly search and access any desktop application's
and indicator's menu, called the HUD, can be accessed by taping the
   Alt key and entering characters.

 * Unity setting can now be configured by the System Setting panel, and
Nautilus support has been added to the Unity launcher.

 * Support for ClickPad devices has been enhanced an now when a button
is pressed on the trackpad surface, a second finger may be used to
   drag the cursor.

 * The default music player has been switched to Rhythmbox, which again
   includes the UbuntuOne music store.

 * LibreOffice has been updated to 3.5 beta 2. Please report any
   regressions that you notice.

 * When installing packages through the software center, the corresponding
language support packages are now installed automatically as well.

Please see http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ for details.

Ubuntu Server and Cloud Images
--

 * Improvements to OpenStack, LXC, and server provisioning have been
   included.

   (redux branch).

---

Ubuntu Core is a minimal rootfs for use in the creation of custom images,
and now includes ARM hard float (armhf) images. Developers can use

[Bug 944120] Re: Order of the buttons is wrong on the settings tab in the qt control panel for Ubuntu

2012-03-01 Thread Rodney Dawes
Natalia, either would require a UIFe I think (as the colors of the
buttons would change, still). And I am pretty sure Lisette means swap
the buttons, as the Apply button is the affirmative action, while the
default button would reset everything. And you wouldn't want to make
changes, hit the default button, and have all your changes be reverted.

[Bug 943912] Re: Libreoffice Writer crash with Ctrl+f

2012-03-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
JP, please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather
debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 943912
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and
the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
As well, please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = Incomplete
