You installed the .deb uding dpkg? Try and stick to using apt,
aptitude, synaptic, etc. especially when dealing with the official
repositories. It will make your life easier. Anyway, this is the

VLC will play pretty much everything:

There are several ways to download You Tube videos, and mplayer and
vlc will both play them in their original flash format. Ffmpeg will
convert them to ogg theora, avi, or whatever you like. There's a
