[Bug 959294] Verification report.

2012-07-09 Thread Adam Gandelman
Please find the attached Jenkins job results from the Ubuntu Server
Team's CI infrastructure. As part of the verification process for this
bug, Keystone has been deployed and configured across multiple nodes
using precise-proposed as an installation source. After successful
bring-up and configuration of the cluster, a number of exercises and
smoke tests have be invoked to ensure the updated package did not
introduce any regressions. A number of test iterations were carried out
to catch any possible transient errors.

Please Note the list of installed packages at the top and bottom of the
report.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the
Jenkins links in the comments of the relevant upstream code-review(s):

Trunk review: https://review.openstack.org/6109

As per the provisional Micro Release Exception granted to this package
by the Technical Board, we hope this contributes toward verification of
this update.

[Bug 1021530] Re: update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4

2012-07-06 Thread Adam Gandelman
Dan-

I've applied that commit to our current Precise package and uploaded it
a PPA for testing. Please find 'openvswitch - 1.4.0-1ubuntu1.1' in the
PPA detailed @ https://launchpad.net/~gandelman-a/+archive/ppa. The
patch mostly applied okay. tests/test-odp.c seems to have evolved a bit
since 1.4.0, but the changes from that commit still look okay there (to
my eye, at least). Please test that package and see if it resolves
your issue. If so, we can propose the update for an SRU.

Dan--

Thanks for reporting and helping Ubuntu better! As per the policies
surrounding stable release updates [1], at this point its not really
possible to release a new upstream version of OVS into 12.04. Best bet
would be to provide some details of the OVS bug, links to upstream bug
reports and commits that fixed the issue and see about possibly back-
porting the fix to Precise via an SRU.

Thanks,
Adam

[Bug 1019904] Re: python-eventlet (0.9.16-1ubuntu4) on 12.04 raising AssertionError exceptions.

2012-07-02 Thread Adam Gandelman
*** Impact ***

The incomplete patch set applied to python-eventlet causes nova to
frequently log AssertionError exceptions. 12.04 is the development
platform for the current development release of Openstack, and will
likely continue to be for a number of future releases. For developers,
these messages pollutes debug logs, test suite runs, etc.

*** Development Fix ***

The issue has been fixed upstream since March, in Debian since March,
and in Ubuntu 12.10 since May.

*** Test Case ***

sudo apt-get -y install nova-api
sudo service nova-api stop
sudo nova-api

Observe numerous Exception AssertionError: AssertionError()...
messages logged to stderr during the lifetime of the process, as well as
'KeyError' exception on process exit.

*** Regression Potential ***

Minimal

[Bug 1019904] [NEW] python-eventlet (0.9.16-1ubuntu4) on 12.04 raising AssertionError exceptions.

2012-07-01 Thread Adam Gandelman
Public bug reported:

python-eventlet (0.9.16-1ubuntu2) introduced a cherry-picked upstream
patch that fixed a memory leak manifested by Nova's use of the library.
Since that time, the various nova services often log AssertionError
exceptions, ie:

2012-07-01 17:59:27 DEBUG nova.utils [-] Got file lock iptables for method
apply... from (pid=23798) inner

completed with success from (pid=23798) apply
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/network/linux_net.py:335

As was pointed out on a recent mailing list post [1], this is due to two
missing patches that were subsequently applied upstream to avoid the
exceptions.

The issue has been fixed in Debian unstable as of 0.9.16-2 (a more
complete patch applied), and in Ubuntu as of the 0.9.16-2ubuntu1 merge.

We should consider SRU'ing a fix for this as it is unsettling for users
deploying Nova into production, and annoying for upstream developers
(12.04 is the current target platform for the current Nova dev cycle).

[Bug 1000261] Re: newer `qemu-img info` causes in exception when finding the backing file for qcow2 images

2012-06-28 Thread Adam Gandelman
Please find the attached Jenkins job results from the Ubuntu Server Team's CI
infrastructure. As part of the verification process for this bug, Nova has
been deployed and configured across multiple nodes using precise-proposed as
an installation source. After successful bring-up and configuration of the
cluster, a number of exercises and smoke tests have be invoked to ensure the
updated package did not introduce any regressions. A number of test iterations
were carried out to catch any possible transient errors.

Note the list of installed packages at the top and bottom of the report.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the
Jenkins links in the comments of the relevant upstream code-review:

https://review.openstack.org/7556

As per the provisional Micro Release Exception granted to this package by
the Technical Board, we hope this contributes toward verification of this
update.

[Bug 997641] Re: Could not run Puppet configuration client: Could not retrieve local facts: bad URI

2012-06-11 Thread Adam Gandelman
Martijn-

The update in question repaired the ec2 fact to working order (it was
previously busted, and consequently skipped by facter+puppet altogether)
Strange though, something is clearly answering requests at that address
for the 'html' string to show up anywhere. The code checks that it
can connect to 169.254.169.254:80 before attempting to collect any data
from the server. I'm curious what the output is (if any) of running the
following command from one of the affected Puppet client nodes:

ruby -e require 'open-uri'; require 'timeout'; Timeout::timeout(2) {
open('http://169.254.169.254') }

[Bug 997641] Re: Could not run Puppet configuration client: Could not retrieve local facts: bad URI

2012-06-04 Thread Adam Gandelman
Martijn-

This is the expected behavior of the ec2 fact that ships with facter.
If it can connect to a webserver at http://169.254.169.254:80 (the
expected location of the meta-data server on Amazon EC2), it will
attempt to traverse the directory structure and populate facts with bits
of meta-data related to the instance. It seems like, in your case,
there is something else serving requests at
http://169.254.169.254/2008-02-01/meta-data, but instead of serving a
directory structure its serving a HTML file. Facter is using each line
of this file as possible directories to query, hence the InvalidURI
exception from ruby when trying to connect to
http://169.254.169.254/2008-02-01/meta-data/html (which is probably
the first line of the HTML file being served)

I'm curious to know about the environment you're running this in. Is
this cloud infrastructure or a data center? Perhaps your firewall is
redirecting all requests to 169.254.169.254 somewhere else? If this is
Openstack. perhaps nova network is not properly forwarding requests to
the meta-data service and they instead hit a webserver on the compute
node?

In any case, there is unfortunately no way to have puppet or facter
avoid running certain facts contained within its configured fact
library. One work around, if you do not need access to the related EC2
facts, is to remove that specific fact from your facter library
directory: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/facter/ec2.rb. Another option is to block
outbound requests to 169.254.169.254 in a way that would cause an
initial probe of port 80 to fail.

[Bug 1008749] [NEW] Missing bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1b.fw causes failed net boot installations

2012-06-04 Thread Adam Gandelman
Public bug reported:

Using the latest quantal mini.iso, ethdetect fails during preseeded net
installs. Kernel log shows:

bnx2: Can't load firmware file bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1b.fw

Since kernel 3.3, bnx2 driver apparently requires a new firmware file
which was committed to linux-firmware at

firmware.git;a=commit;h=9897fdba8c422615695af7be3a3d42db46d35620

This has been reported elsewhere,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multipleid=786937

Copying lib/firmware/3.4.0-3-generic/bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1a.fw to
lib/firmware/3.4.0-3-generic/bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1b.fw and repacking

[Bug 1003805] Re: Glance/swift integration broken

2012-05-24 Thread Adam Gandelman
This should be a duplicate. We are aware of this and working to get
Folsom released into Q so we can begin backporting fixes. A fix should
be coming as an individual cherry-picked patch, or a batch update with
all fixes committed to stable/essex branch since release.

[Bug 979745] Re: with keystone auth, image objects left behind in swift post-deletion

2012-05-24 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

When the swift backend store is in use, with the keystone auth strategy
enabled, and delayed_delete configured false, image deletion in glance
leads to the corresponding swift object being leaked.

This results from the attempted object deletion in glance/store/swift.py
  failing silently with:

- Auth GET failed: http://keystone_host:5000/tokens 404 Not Found
+   Auth GET failed: http://keystone_host:5000/tokens 404 Not Found

The root cause is that the auth url associated with the swift connection
used for deletion is missing a trailing forward slash.
+
+ Ubuntu SRU Justification
+ -
+ [Impact]
+ When Glance is configured to use Swift as a backend store and when Keystone
authentication is enabled, requests are sent to the Keystone Auth URL without a
trailing slash. This results in 404s from the Keystone API server, causing
authentication requests in Glance's swift client middleware to fail. The
original report cites situations where image deletion silently fails, though
others report this completely breaks Swift+Glance integration.
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ This issue has been fixed since the release of Essex and has been released in
the first Openstack Folsom milestone (f1) https://review.openstack.org/6480
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ The fix has been backported upstream to the stable/essex branch. Cherry
picking the commit and applying it to the Essex/12.04 packaging should be
enough to fix the issue.
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~gandelman-a/ubuntu/precise/glance/sru_979745/revision/52
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Configure glance to use Swift as a backing store with Keystone
authentication. Uploading, deleting and getting images should result in 404s
from Keystone for requests to the configured auth URL.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Minimal. The patch simply formats the keystone URL appropriately within
Glance's swift client code. This code path is not hit unless the glance server
is configured to use a Keystone-authenticated Swift backend.
