[Bug 1650666] Re: GVim crashes when opening new tab
Using vim8 from a ppa has worked for me. The latest vim has the patch mentioned in github#851. Perhaps it could be SRU'ed into 16.04's vim7, but that would require someone to put the effort in. Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Archive management plans for phone RTM
On Wed, Jun 4, 2014 at 1:20 PM, Colin Watson cjwat...@ubuntu.com wrote: The current plan is therefore: * Rick has asked me to take ownership of deciding when to branch for RTM; note that this decision can be taken retroactively by copying older versions of packages, so we can say the image from three days ago looked good but things have been broken since then, so let's branch from that. I intend to take this decision based on how stable images are and how much tension there is between phone work and development of other parts of Ubuntu; Another factor that should feed into this decision should be the schedule/status of our currently ongoing commercial engagements with our phone OEMs, as they will be another constituency for whom minimized tension/disruption will be critical around that time frame. * We will then have an ubuntu-phone (name TBD) distribution in Launchpad with a series named something like rtm-14.09, and will land changes for RTM there, allowing other parts of Ubuntu to move on without risk of breaking phone images. We'll have a -proposed pocket as usual and proposed-migration will operate on it. I'd like permissions on this distribution to be identical to those in Ubuntu where possible, but we can discuss details there. There'll be system-image channels for RTM, probably per-device. The probably per-device clause is interesting. Noting it here to feed into questions below. * We don't want to have to maintain RTM series for a long time. The plan is to move devices to the next stable branch along as soon as possible. To facilitate this, the usual rule should be that changes should only go into this distribution after they're already on their way into mainline Ubuntu (as for SRUs), to make sure that we don't end up in a situation where developers land changes on the stable branch but don't quite get round to landing them in mainline. Agreed that this policy is critical to the long term success of Ubuntu phone images, as reducing/eliminating rootfs fragmentation is one of the key differentiators of our platform vs. Android. = FAQ = Can we use this strategy for other Ubuntu flavours or derivatives? In theory, maybe. It's very much easier to use this strategy for phone images, though, because the standard distribution mechanism is via system-image channels so we don't need to worry about updating sources.list or arranging for mirroring of the derived archive, etc. There's also a potentially serious social cost to having lots of archive branches, and I wouldn't want to do so except for short durations under tight management; I don't want to see the Ubuntu-and-flavours development community fracturing unnecessarily. Will this mechanism be able to support an arbitrary number of commercial downstream flavors? My assumption here is that a commercial downstream will branch off RTM itself, forming RTM'. I assume the probably per-device channel mechanism could be used here? A simplifying assumption is that the commercial downstreams will definitely want to follow the policy of mainline first and have devices-in-the-field update from next stable branch ASAP, although be aware that the value of P may be on the order of multiple months. Will there be some mechanism to recreate the archive at the RTM or RTM' branch point? I am thinking of a factory hotfix nightmare where access to the exact source / package versions will be critical in debugging the issue. We can make the nightmare worse by imagining that it inexplicably occurs 6 months after initial shipment. Re: reflecting on first UDS session on rolling releases
* Allison Randal alli...@ubuntu.com: On 06/03/2013 16:19, Matthew Paul Thomas wrote: There are three parts to Rick's proposal: 1. dropping non-LTS releases 2. making the development version a rolling release stable enough for enthusiast use 3. introducing monthly snapshots. [...] Also remember that, as the idea currently stands, the tiny set of enthusiasts are the only people who will get updated versions of applications. The majority of users will have a stale experience, and no reasonable alternative. The stale experience comes because our apps are tightly tied to our platform, delivered in one entity we call a distro. It is clear (to me) that the combined capacity of Canonical + Ubuntu developers is hitting a ceiling in our ability to scale distro development. Combine that with Canonical's pivot (or expansion, however you prefer) into the mobile industry where system/platform requirements are quite different from traditional desktop and we are seeing our existing development processes strained to breaking point. Proposals like moving to a rolling release are an attempt to evolve our existing processes to new realities and requirements, but I think we need to go one step farther and question why we are so tied to our distro model, where apps and platform are tightly bound. I agree the distro model was good and necessary before Linux (and Ubuntu) were popular platforms. In those days, we needed distro developers to bring apps to the platform to entice users. My claim is that we've since solved the chicken and egg problem. We *have* an enticing platform that attracts app developers from weekend hobbyists to giants like Valve. Let's spend our time improving plumbing like making app backports to the stable platform easy or enabling system updates on an embedded device in a sane manner or maintaining library APIs across stable releases. Let's figure out how to decouple and disentangle our apps from our platform. Let's stop trying to have (and do) it all. We have built it. They are here. What now? [Bug 1088424] Re: alsa midi sequencer not available on nexus 7
The high level answer is, the nexus7 Kconfig should turn on the same options as the standard Ubuntu kernel. So if Ubuntu turns them on, but the n7 does not, it is probably an oversight. Probably the real way to fix all these bugs is for the kernel team to do a diff of the Kconfigs and sync them up... See also: LP: #780602 + + [Test Case] + Run nm-applet for multiple hours: + - Observe that the VPN Connections submenu still opens and lists connections (if VPN connections are configured) + - Observe that the More networks submenu for additional detected wireless networks still opens and lists networks. + + A common failure case is where such a submenu will open but show an + empty list (a piece of menu a few milimeters long). + + [Regression Potential] + Minimal, the fixes have been available for a while in the development release (and in other recent releases) with no regressions. + Possible issues could be introducing new memory leaks with the changes however, and although the risk is minimal, this could cause the same failure behavior as listed above under [Test Case]. + + -- + Binary package hint: appmenu-gtk The rebuild function creates a hash table mapping the toplevel to the g_timeout id responsible for doing the refresh. The rebuild function allocates a RebuildData object to pass to the do_rebuild idle function. The do_rebuild callback function frees this object when it is called. However, the do_rebuild function isn't guaranteed to be called. In fact the whole point of the hash table seems to be that the callback can be canceled. When that happens, the RebuildData object isn't freed, causing a leak. Additionally, instead of storing a proper reference to the toplevel in the RebuldData object, a weak pointer is stored instead. But if the weak pointer gets set to null, the do_rebuld function will lose its only copy of that pointer, so it will have no way of cleaning up the associated entry in the hash table. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/787736 Title: RebuildData structs are leaked in rebuild() / do_rebuild() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/appmenu-gtk/+bug/787736/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while
Mathieu, yes, I confirm the leaks are fixed in quantal and raring via code inspection (but not actual testing). Additionally, I did some digging into fontconfig and it looks like they are false positives since 2008. I'm experimenting with a valgrind suppression file so we don't have to deal with these in the future. http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/2008-November/003032.html Jeffrey, nice script. I notice in my valgrind log that although the nm- applet leaks are gone, there are still a few dbus and other leaks, which makes sense given the context of your script. I bet they haven't all been backported to 12.04 yet. [Bug 1046102] Re: Sync wader 0.5.12-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)
Requesting a FFe. This release fixes quite a few bugs and adds support for new devices. The reason for the delay is entirely my fault -- I thought it would be auto-synced from debian, but forgot that debian was in a freeze, so the package never moved from unstable into testing, and thus I missed the auto-sync deadline. Although there is an API change, please note that they were 99% additive, and only one property was moved (LastAPN got moved between DBus interfaces, but it had only existed since 0.5.10). There are no known consumers of the API in the archive anyway. Thank you for considering this exception. New Devices === Add support for ZTE MF668, MF626, MF636, MF180, MF181, MF190 Add support for Option GTM380 Add support for Ericsson F5521gw Device Fixes Huawei K2540/E220, avoid firmware bugs in GetRoamingIDs Huawei devices might populate contact info in SMS data, so handle it. Option GTM378, has two flavours, handle them correctly Option devices could panic whilst getting the roaming list if the current character set was UCS2, work around. Option band get/set/list methods reworked ZTE allow longer for network scanning General Fixes = Handle 'connectionLost' now that Twisted serial implements it correctly Some expected 'failures' (contacts list empty etc) are not really errors, so don't log them Update UDEV rules to be more like Modem Manager's, which avoids a bug in USB Modeswitch (LP: #988365) Add signal strength caching, avoids probing the modem repeatedly if the KDE plasma applet is being used Be more careful about using the correct Modem Manager specified DBus type on properties. Fix logic in SYSFS path derivation, prevented clean removal if device pulled. Correct a couple of MM Band constant names that got renamed in the spec sometime. Add quirk framework for devices, implement 'need_enable_before_pin' New Features Utilise the allowed_auth parameter in simple.connect if NetworkManager supplies it. Yes. There's a number of different approaches you can take currently: - get it into Debian, sync from there Is there anything we can do to speed up the process and make it more obvious how to proceed? I'm trying to be a good citizen and get a new package in via Debian, and it has taken me quite a while. To be fair, part of the problem is that I haven't had the time away from $DAYJOB to apply as much effort as I'd like. I did manage to get good feedback about my python module from both debian-mentors mailing list and #debian-python. It's partly a matter of finding time to address comments; partly that Packaging Is Hard, even for someone who kinda knows what they're doing. For instance, I've been modifying existing packages in Ubuntu for a while now, and am comfortable with most patch systems and am somewhat familiar with policy. But packaging something brand new involves jumping over higher (occasionally unexpected) hurdles than simply getting a debdiff sponsored. This is because the sponsor not only needs to review the entire packaging (not just a diff), but also the source code to make sure you're not uploading a new trojan to millions of machines where you'll have root. These are facts I've learned throughout my process, and when explained this way, make perfect sense. I'm not sure how this can be sped up. Can we work with Debian to make their mentorship process better (I know they've already been doing a bunch of work with things like mentors.debian.net, though I don't know how well it's working), and then make sure we have good documentation on the process? Yeah, so I just blundered into mentors.debian.net and debexpo as part of my google search on how to get a package into debian. On a mechanical level, the dput process is great; the same as I use for Ubuntu. The harder problem is then finding a reviewer and sponsor. The docs suggest emailing debian-mentors, but could be improved by mentioning that you should cc a relevant team. Now that I've been on d-m for a few weeks, I see some people get quite rapid reviews and rapid sponsorship. I also see other people who are sending out their 3rd and 4th RFS without any visible help. For myself, I got good review comments from someone very knowledgeable which I appreciated, but when I asked about sponsorship, he said he wasn't able (or willing, unsure, really). No one else stepped up to review or sponsor my package. I have resorted to asking a DD that I know in Real Life(tm) to sponsoring my package; he agreed to the actual sponsorship, and now the ball is in my court to address his further review comments. The worst part of the process is that sending a blind mail to debian-mentors is an action to which it is indeterminate whether you receive a response or not. I don't know what we could do in Ubuntu to make the Debian mentorship process better, other than helping review packages on d-m, and potentially uploading packages if you are a DD (or have other upload rights). /ac -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
