Kubuntu Council Nomination

2013-03-11 Thread David Wonderly
Greetings,

My name is David Wonderly (Darkwing on IRC) and I wish to run for reelection
to the Kubuntu Council.

For those who may not know, I am a community guy. This being said, there are a
few things I want to do over the next couple years.

I had started posting to the Kubuntu Forums trying to bridge the gap between
the developers and community, I had to stop due to some person life issues
that have been taken care of and I would like to bring that back.

My goal is to be always there for the Community, to hear your concerns and
comments and try to be a good voice for the community on the Council. I'm also
planning on continueing my doc work as well.

Cheers!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] US-CA Loco Leadership

2012-07-29 Thread David Wonderly
Greetings,

For the last few years it has been a joy and a privilage to be a part of the
US-CA Leadership team. As many of you know my life has been going through
some major changes and one of the changes is that I am relocating to the state
of Indiana.

Because of this change it is only fair and right that I step down from my
position in the US-CA team and allow someone that will be living in the state
to help out and be a part of the team.

The ride I have had in the team has taught me a lot and I am not vanishing
completely. You all have become a part of my family and for everything
everyone has done, thank you.

I have already been in contact with the US-IN team and will be continuing my
work with Ubuntu Loco teams in Indiana when I move there. I will be in
Southern California until friday morning when I fly out.

Thank you all for everything and good luck!

Cheers!

Kubuntu Documentation

2011-10-06 Thread David Wonderly
Greetings everyone.

I wanted to thank everyone who worked on the Kubuntu Docs for 11.10 (Oneiric
Ocelot). Thanks to your dedication and hard work we not only finished on time
but, we also got the translations worked on and finished too! Thank you all so
much!

So, with all of that said, I would like to welcome you all the the development
cycle for Kubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin.

The BZR branch of lp:kubuntu-docs now reflects precise and is open for editing.

Please, please please please use the blueprint for this.[1] I am begging you.
:) It makes tracking s much simpler. If you have ANY questions on how
to use launchpad blueprints as it relates to work items please read this. [2]

Anyway, because this will be a LTS release I want to ensure that this is our
best doc cycle yet. This is why I am asking that we all chip in. I will be re-
writing the doc guide and have that ready to go shortly. Stay tuned for that.

So, in closing, I am looking forward to working with the ones I spent oneiric
with in crunch time and I am looking forward to making new friends in this
documentation adventure!

Cheers!

[Ubuntu-US-CA] 2011 Elections

2011-09-27 Thread David Wonderly
Greetings and Salutations!

It is that time of year again, this is where we all gather to elect new
leaders for the Ubuntu California LoCo Team! [1]

The roles and responsibilities of the Leaders can be found on our wiki page.
[2]

The way the election process will work is as follows. Nominations will be open
from the receipt of the email till 1900 Pacific Time on 16 October, 2011.

You can either self nominate (Recommended) or you can nominate someone else.
PLEASE NOTE: If you nominate someone else PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ensure that
this person wishes to be nominated.

The nominations are simple. Please add the relevant information onto the wiki
page [3] and they will be nominated. Once the nominations are in, if there are
any questions on someones wish to be nominated they will be addressed. Once
those questions are addressed, assuming that there are more then three
nominees, a poll will be created for the elections.

The poll will be active for one week. At the end of the week the new
leadership team will be announced.

If you have any questions or concerns about this process please, feel free to
ask me about them.

For the Ubuntu California Leadership Team,

David DarkwingDuck Wonderly

[Bug 810327] Re: [Fujitsu Amilo] Synaptics touchpad ceases functioning after suspend and resume

2011-09-27 Thread David Wonderly
I also have a Dell Vostro V13 and am dealing with this issue. I have
found a decent workaround for it though.

What you want to do is make a script that will execute on resume.

Have a look at folder /etc/pm/sleep.d/ - all scripts within this folder
are automatically run as root-user after/before suspend or hibernate.

The script needs to fit this example:

#!/bin/bash
case $1 in
hibernate|suspend)
ACTION BEFORE SUSPEND/HIBERNATE
;;
thaw|resume)
ACTION AFTER RESUME
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit $?

I had already made this script as ps.sh:

#!/bin/bash
rmmod psmouse
modprobe psmouse

So, I just tossed the two together and this is how it works:

sudo touch /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh
sudo chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh
sudo nano /etc/pm/sleep.de/99-touchpad-restart.sh

#!/bin/bash
case $1 in
thaw|resume)
/home/darkwingduck/ps.sh/dev/null
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit $?

Works like a charm. I know it's not a perm fix, but it works.

 Hi,

Thanks for the offer. As I say, sometimes transportation can be an
 issue
for me. I have a weird schedule, so I'm usually not really up to
 doing much
during normal day hours. However, I wouldn't mind meeting local
 people some
time in the future when schedules can come together. I have my own
 health
issues, so I don't always have a lot of energy. What I'm getting at
 is that
I can't really predict what's a good time for me to meet because of
 various
factors. If something becomes more definite with my schedule and other
things, I'll certainly post here. Thank you very much for the offer and
I'll certainly keep it in mind.

It's very refreshing to find a nice, welcoming community. Every

least one troll, but I seem to have found their hideout in the last
 group.
 It wasn't related to Linux.

Hi everyone!

Oneiric Alpha 1 is due this week and candidate images will start
appearing hopefully on Tuesday.

As usual we'll be asking everyone on the QA team to participate in the
image testing to ensure we have good test coverage.

The procedures for testing ISO images and reporting results are
explained on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures

Test results will be tracked on http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/

You may have accounts on the tracker from last time. Please register if
you are new to this.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

We will coordinate testing in #ubuntu-testing on freenode. Please, go
there often to see what others are testing or what needs to be tested.

Thank you very much for your help and happy testing!

When your interaction with other Ubuntu users is entirely made up of
developers talking about bugs they need to fix and users seeking
support (IRC, forums, bug reports), your perspective changes. It's
hard to get a good idea of the big picture. What portion of users are
hitting problems in what areas? How do users who've reported bugs
feel about the experience? How are the local community teams doing?
That kind of stuff is hard to wrap your head around without metrics.

To that end, a bunch of members of the Ubuntu community have worked
together to create a survey that'll help those of us working on
various parts of Ubuntu understand where we need to improve and how we
can do better.

My error, I was reading my e-mail and saw the 1st paragraph talking
about Natty. I have frantically been searching for something on it.

I installed Alpha 3 to check it out. When I tried to boot up, there was
just a curser flashing in the upper left corner. I loaded 10.04 Live
and ran sudo update-grub, no change. After that I re-installed Ubuntu
10.04 over the Natty install, no change in the grub. If I put a live
disk in, I can get to grub, but I can't load with out a disk.

I have been able to do this with 4 or 5 different Linux live CDs as well
as Hiram's boot disk and an old copy of Super Grub. I know there is
some logical explanation, but I have been thinking of pulling my old
HDDs out and starting from scratch with my new 1TB HDD. I installed the
new drive after the problem started with the other HDDs still installed,
so I don't know if that will even help.

I was hoping to find a work around for this, but may have to wait till
April 28 and just start fresh.

Thanks for listening, and no jumping me for my poor judgement on the

RELEASE: 11-070

NASA TO HOST OPEN SOURCE SUMMIT MARCH 29-30 IN CALIFORNIA

WASHINGTON -- NASA will host a summit about open source software
development on March 29-30 at the agency's Ames Research Center in
Moffett Field, Calif. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT on
both days.

NASA's first Open Source Summit will bring together engineers, policy
makers and members of the open source community. Participants will
discuss the challenges within the existing open source policy
framework and propose modifications to facilitate NASA's development,
release and use of software.

Open source brings numerous benefits to NASA software projects,
including increased quality, reduced development costs, faster
development cycles and reduced barriers for public-private
collaboration to commercialize agency technology said NASA's Chief
Technology Officer for Information Technology Chris C. Kemp. The
full benefits of open source can only be achieved if NASA is able to
establish the processes, policies and culture needed to encourage and
support open source development.

Goals for the summit include establishing a method to support
collaboration with the public throughout the development lifecycle;
exploring NASA's ability to release and develop software under varied
open source licenses; determining whether and to what extent NASA can
participate in open source software governance bodies; and gleaning
best practices from private industry and other federal agencies.

Guest speakers will provide insights into best practices and share
valuable lessons learned in building and using open source
communities. Confirmed speakers include Kemp; Pascal Finette,
director of Mozilla Labs; Robert Sutor, vice president of Open
Systems at IBM; Chris Wanstrath, CEO and co-founder of Github; and
Brian Stevens, CTO and vice president of Worldwide Engineering at Red
Hat.

The summit will include sessions on licensing, government
restrictions, such as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations,
governance, and risk assessments.

Seating at the event is limited. However, virtual participation is
open to the public through online media, including live video
streaming, electronic discussion and collaborative note taking. For
more information or to register for the summit, visit:
http://www.nasa.gov/open/source/

Subject: Natty Alpha 3 Released!
Date: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 10:05:31 am
From: Kate Stewart kate.stew...@canonical.com
To: ubuntu-devel-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com
CC: ubuntu...@lists.ubuntu.com, ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com

Welcome to Natty Narwhal Alpha 3, which will in time become Ubuntu
11.04.

Pre-releases of Natty are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and
those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Natty development cycle.

New packages showing up in this release include:
 * LibreOffice 3.3.1
 * Unity 3.6.0
 * Linux Kernel 2.6.38-rc6.
 * Upstart 0.9
 * Dpkg 1.16.0-pre + multi-arch snapshot

The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of show stopper CD build
or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Natty.
You can download it here:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu Desktop and
Server)
  http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu Server for UEC
and EC2)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/natty/alpha-3/
(Ubuntu ARM)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Kubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Xubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/natty/alpha-3 (Edubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu
Studio)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/releases/natty/alpha-3/ (Mythbuntu)

Alpha 3 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider
testing. Please refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/alpha3 for
information on changes in Ubuntu.

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a
list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please
see:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/alpha3

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Natty, have a look at the natty-changes mailing list:

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/natty-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list
if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a
low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of
approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other
interesting events.

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-announce

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] San Diego Ubuntu Hour Part Deux! (Point Loma, 11/20/2010)

2010-11-16 Thread David Wonderly
An idea from UDS was having a guest account on there for people to use and try
out. I run Kubuntu and will have it open for people to use. If you have Ubuntu
on your then when they are done using it we can talk to them about their
experience and give them a CD.

Just an idea :D

2010-11-09 Thread David Wonderly
Greetings Landon!

I am sure that there will be many talks upcoming in the ML for the Website and
the PodCasts.

As for packaging there are two good places to go for this. There are the
Masters Of The Universe (MOTU https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU ) They maintain the
Universe and Multiverse components in Ubuntu Repositories.

Alternatively here is the Ubuntu Packaging Guide.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide

I hope this helps you and if you need anything else please feel free to let us
know

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: Announcing the First LoCo Day Event: Second Try

2010-11-09 Thread David Wonderly
Just wanted to send this out as an FYI!

Dave
-- Forwarded Message --

Subject: Announcing the First LoCo Day Event: Second Try
Date: Tuesday, November 09, 2010, 08:28:49 pm
From: Nathan Handler nhand...@ubuntu.com
To: Ubuntu local community team (LoCo) contacts loco-
conta...@lists.ubuntu.com, loco-council loco-coun...@lists.ubuntu.com,
Ubuntu Classroom Management ubuntu-classr...@lists.ubuntu.com, ubuntu-news-
team-request ubuntu-news-team-requ...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hello everyone,

For various reasons, the LoCo Days event was unable to happen at its
originally scheduled date. We want to give it another try. The first
LoCo Days event will now take place the weekend of December 17-19. I
am including my original announcement email below. If your LoCo is
interested in getting involved, please contact a member of the
Classroom Management Team and we can add you to the schedule.

Thanks,
Nathan

Original Announcement
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-classroom/2010-October/000225.html):

Hello everyone,

It is my great honor to be able to announce a new Ubuntu Classroom
event that will be taking place: LoCo Days [1] ! To quote the wiki,
Most Classroom sessions done in the Ubuntu community are done in
English. However, we have a large LoCo community as well. LoCo Days
were designed to encourage LoCo Teams to start doing more Classroom
sessions in their native languages. The first set of LoCo Days will
take place from Friday, November 5th, 2010 - Sunday, November 7th,
2010. Sessions, to be given in the LoCo's native language, will focus
will be on different LoCo-related HowTos. Some possible topics might
include: How to host an Ubuntu Hour, How to start a Loco team, or How
to organize a release party. Sessions will be lead by groups from
different LoCos; there will be very few (if any) individuals hosting
sessions.

In order for this event to work, we need as many different LoCo teams
to volunteer to lead sessions as possible. Sessions can take place any
time during Friday, November 5th, 2010 - Sunday, November 7th, 2010,
so LoCo teams should have no issue finding a convenient time. If you
are interested in leading a session, please let either myself or
another member of the Classroom Management Team [2] know so that we
can add you to the schedule. Please be sure to pass this announcement
on to the other members of your LoCo team.

Thanks,
Nathan Handler

 Hey all,
I'm looking into get a San Diego Ubuntu Hour going around the greater San
Diego area! I'm thinking that we do this 'coffee house coder' style. We had
similar events back in Michigan that seemed to always work out well.

If you are in San Diego, and would be willing to meet once a month for an
Ubuntu Hour, PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK! :) We need to get about half a 3-6
'core' people that would come every month.

 Why?
 1. Getting a new open source pet project going
 2. Getting involved in an existing OSS project
 3. Getting started doing technical/translation/bug/community/documentation
 work for Ubuntu
 4. Technical networking in meatspace!
 5. Answering technical questions for people who are having trouble
 installing/configuring Ubuntu

 Where?
I'm new to the area, so I'm scouting out decent coffee shops where the
management would be open to this type of deal. I'm thinking a good place to
meet would be the downtown area.

 When?
I'm thinking once a month would probably be a good frequency at which to
meet. Probably a Mon/Tues/Wed night after the workday would be a decent day
to meet. (Doesn't interfere with social schedules as much)

 How?
I have a few ideas to drum up interest, including fliers around downtown
 and the college campuses

This plan is still in its infancy, suggestions/advice is always welcome.

 Kevin DuBois

Did we ever come up with a date and time for the San Diego Ubuntu Hour? I'm
flying home from UDS on Saturday the 30th however, after that I would love to
be a major part of it! There has been some cool ideas down here about things
to do at Ubuntu Hour that I will be sharing with the LoCo once I get
everything condensed into a manageable read.

This sounds like a good plan to me, we have some outstanding bugs [1]
that need to be fixed. The majority of bugs that need attention are
those marked with High importance and the newer bugs, listed at the end
of the list without priority assigned yet.

I may not have much time to write patches, so I encourage others to post
patches, and I will be happy to review them.

  Hi all,

At today's docteam meeting we discussed a possible schedule for
pushing a fairly quick update to the Lucid documentation.

We resolved to adopt the following schedule:

  * Documentation team to push post-release fixes to the lucid branch,
  freezing on 17 May
  * Translation templates will be pushed to Launchpad on 17 May
  * Translators can work to complete new (and existing) translations up
  until 11 June
  * Documentation team plan to upload a new ubuntu-docs package to
  lucid-updates on 12-13 June.

Please let me know if either translators or documentors foresee any
  issues with this.

I would encourage anyone who sees a bug that can be easily fixed in
our Lucid documentation to report it (if not already reported), and to
propose it to be fixed in Lucid using the Target to release button
in Launchpad. Please also raise it here so that it can be approved for
  targeting to Lucid.
