[Bug 1235991] Re: Can't “use system keyboard layout” in Saucy
Saucy 3.10, up to date (2013-11-21), with Gnome 3.8. Thinkpads, Acers. I am a British English user, and have all my locales set to en_GB.UTF-8. I have a UK keyboard. I never use US English for typing (or thinking :-). I work in Unicode all the time, and use Ibus and m17n, with four or five m17n input methods (IM) available all the time. Before Saucy It used to be possible to a) switch off m17n/ibus handling, so the native locale keyboard was active b) switch between m17n IMs so that the keys they specifically defined worked, and those that were not defined in the m17n map defaulted to the native locale map. E.g., shift+3 would give the UK pound sign all the time, even when typing Sanskrit or Greek. In Saucy, a) one can't turn off ibus handling, apparently. But the native locale appears as the first item in the ibus menu. In my case it's English (UK). Okay: one has to retrain one's fingers, but it's manageable. b) When I change to one of the m17n-defined IMs, the background default keyboard switches to English (US). So shift+3 gives #. That is unacceptable. Definitely a bug. I've ripped out the US locale completely from my machine (http://askubuntu.com/questions/58191/how-can-i-uninstall-a-locale-via- command-line, and localepurge), but it makes no difference. Ibus is still fetching the US keyboard from some unknown place. So, how to make ibus use the locale to set the default background keyboard for all non-defined keys? ** Attachment added: m17n latn-pre keyboard loaded on a UK system, but defaulting to English (US) keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1235991/+attachment/3913900/+files/Screenshot%20from%202013-11-21%2009%3A57%3A13.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1235991 Title: Can't “use system keyboard layout” in Saucy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1235991/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 880876] Re: Unity causes ibus to not work correctly (spaces incorrectly placed)
On 28 December 2011, I wrote to Mark Shuttleworth about this bug. I noted that since Oneiric, Asian language users cannot type. It's a crazy situation. I said this bug should be very highly prioritized, or else the Precise release should be documented as not being for use by Asian users. I referred to this site, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/ibus/+bug/880876 as the main bug report. I got this reply from his secretary Claire Newman on 9 Jan 2012 saying, Dear Dominik, Thank you for your email to Mark regarding the problem with IBus in Ubuntu. It is extremely useful feedback which I have passed on to the relevant people in Canonical who will help to rectify the issue. Thank you for your support and for letting us know of the problem and happy new year. Kind regards, Claire Now, I *know* this isn't the proper route for getting things fixed in Linux. It's all launchpad/git/bug reports/collaboration, etc. But like David Gómez, I think this problem is very important indeed. Critical. Whoever heard of an operating system where ordinary users can't type properly? It's crazy. And I think it has the potential to blow up in Ubuntu's face. If reviewers get hold of this issue and start posting widely on the net that it has not been possible to type Asian languages for four months or more, it could look very bad for the whole Ubuntu enterprise. If what Claire Newman says is true, then I hope that in addition to our bottom-up efforts to move things along, there may be a top-down effort too. If they took my email seriously. [Bug 880876] Re: Unity causes ibus to not work correctly (spaces incorrectly placed)
I do, in fact, have a working system. I typed some Sanskrit and Greek earlier this morning, with no problem. I'm on 11.10 Oneiric, and gnome- shell (not Unity, probably because of the XIM issue recently mentioned). I described what I did to get a working system here: http://cikitsa.blogspot.com/2012/01/ibus-bug-fix.html I have applied this to two installations, a desktop and a laptop, both with gnome-shell, and ibus+m17n is working on both. I had to compile the deb files using Alex Lee's instructions separately on each machine (the debs produced appeared to be specific to the machine I compiled on). But I feel the situation is fragile; I'm still seeing some very occasional corruption in situations I can't properly define (Java applications?). [Bug 880876] Re: Unity causes ibus to not work correctly (spaces incorrectly placed)
What you say, David (#19) is very depressing. This bug means that a large proportion of Asian users of Ubuntu's flagship product CAN'T WRITE. This is major. Surely the bug should be getting very high priority treatment. It is most regrettable that 11.10 pre-testing didn't reveal it months ago, but after October it should have been definitively fixed within a very short time. Now that we have a fix, there is absolutely no excuse for not including it in Precise. If it persists when Precise is released, I really think we should make a fuss. TeXstudio is compiled with QT, if that's relevant. When, in the same login session on the same machine, I type into Gedit or a terminal, iBus text entry is fine. I've just tried having TeXstudio and Gedit open at the same time, and I still have the different behaviours: in TeXStudio on the left of my screen, iBus text entry is garbled, in Gedit on the right, iBus text entry is fine. I've tried both with and without the iBus option share the same input method among all applications. Makes no difference. okay, here's a possible clue: I open a terminal session. iBus entry is fine. From the command line, I start texstudio, and then in TeXstudio, iBus entry is fine! So iBus text entry in TeXstudio (but not gedit) goes wrong only when I start it from a gnome launch icon. [Bug 880876] Re: Unity causes ibus to not work correctly
Dear Kevin, At https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/840823/comments/40 you said that you thought the problem was unique to Unity. It isn't. I've had the garbled iBus input with three machines running gnome-shell. At first, I used Unity. Then this iBus problem became unbearable, and I started to look around for a solution. Then some people said it wasn't there in gnome-shell, so I moved over, and the thing seemed cured. But it wasn't, and started to reassert itself even in gnome-shell sessions. Finally, the patched iBus 1.4.0 mentioned here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/840823/comments/25 seems to fix the problem. I say seems because this is such an elusive bug, and although my systems seem to be okay at the moment, I wouldn't be totally surprised if I had problems again. Public bug reported: I have a laptop: HP Elitebook 8740w, running Ubuntu 10.10 When I boot Ubuntu, right at the outset, on the initial black screen, I get the message intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled Following this, all is fine. Except, there's no graphics accelleration; the i915 doesn't seem to be being recognized. The laptop also has a ATI Technologies Inc Broadway XT [Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series] chip, but that doesn't give acceleration either. The upshot is, I can use Metacity, but not Compiz. And the machine is using significantly less than its potential chip power. I have tried the upstream MainLine kernels 2.6.37-02063701-generic and 2.6.38-020638rc6-generic downloaded and installed from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ I have also tried other new kernels myself, that I've compiled, tweaking the .config, and patching (e.g., Eric Anholt's patch of 21 Dec 2010, https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/423441/) All to no avail. Re: [Bug 523883] Re: word wrap faulty: cursor jumps forward on new line
Dear Andreas, I don't have Kate, and I just went to install it and Synaptic has so many KDE includes that it comes to nearly 300MB. I'm reluctant to go down that path. I've moved over to TeXworks for the time being. It's a strange little beast, but I'm quite liking it. Nothing like Kile, which really feels like a strong system for long term use. I'm sorry I can't help more with debugging this problem. Synaptic
Hi, Sebastian. How are you? I'm writing to explore a bit with you about Linux, Ubuntu, and the Synaptichttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowtopackage manager (=apt-get). I haven't got to the bottom of how Synaptic interacts with its repositorieshttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu. As far as I can see, apt-get/synaptic is a really slick and effective way of keeping software distributions up to date. In many ways, it should be the perfect tool for hooking Linux TeX distributions into TeXLive and CTAN. The Synaptic repository has got TeXLive in it, but it's the 2007 edition. There's quite a literature out there in various lists from people who discover this, and then get into knots trying to install TL 2008 (now 09) instead. Radhakrishnan wrote some instructions that help people a lot, but even so, there are residual problems about the interaction between texlive and synaptic. There's also a problem about the editor Kile, which only works with the built-in synaptic texlive 2007 distribution. There are workaroundshttp://texblog.net/latex-archive/linux/kile-texlive-2008-equivs/, and one can get Kile working with TL 2008, but they are not for the faint-hearted. In short, for Linux users, there's a bit of a mess where TeX is concerned, for those who would like to use Synaptic rather than plough their own furrow. The Synaptic package reports that the maintainer of the texlive bundlehttp://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/tex/texliveis the Ubuntu Core Developers ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com. Also mentioned are: - Debian TeX Maintainers http://lists.debian.org/debian-tex-maint/ - Norbert Preining - Frank Küster though one is discouraged from contacting them. I see that Norbert is currently active in the debian-tex-mainthttp://lists.debian.org/debian-tex-maint/2010/01/threads.htmllist, and also that he seems to live (partly?) in Vienna. I'm copying this email to him. It looks, from that list, as if there's quite a lot going on at the moment, including perhaps integration of TL 2009, but I can't find a general statement of what's happening or what's planned. I'm copying this email to Norbert, and since we both have Vienna addresses, perhaps Norbert and I could even meet and talk? Do you have any background on all this, Sebastian? Can you suggest any ways in which the Synaptic repositories could be kept up to date with CTAN?As a past happy user of MikTeX, I've been startled to see how much more primitive things are in this area of Linux. And yet, all the tools are seemingly in place for things to work nicely. What's missing? This bloghttp://texblog.net/latex-archive/news/tex-live-2009/says that everything is in fact happening, and TL2009 will appear in the Synaptic repository soon, thanks to the work of Preining and Küster. At base, I'm thinking that maybe I could get involved and help. Re: [Bug 444917] Re: package wget 1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Thanks, Micah, I've already tried to do as you said, but there's still a pesky PATH reassignment somewhere in my system that I can't find. When I was doing this PATH update, at the time of installing TeXlive, I was floundering around, not knowing whether I should be putting the texlive path into .bashrc, .profile, .login, /etc/environment, /etc/bash.bashrc , /etc/profile, etc/profile.d or somewhere else (and whether it should be root or ~). Ah, the wonderful flexibility of unix.. Google/Ubuntu resources don't answer this definitively, or at least I couldn't find a simple, direct answer. I now think everything should happen in ~/.bashrc, but I may be wrong. Anyhow, I must have found some deeply-hidden config file somewhere and put the texlive path into it, and now I can't find it any more. I've been fgrepping around, without luck. I'll find it at some point, and then all will be well. Thanks! Dominik 2009/10/12 Micah Cowan mi...@cowan.name The instructions I gave (modify the postinst script and do a dpkg --configure --pending) should work, until the next time wget itself, or any package whatsoever with an info page, is updated. A more long term solution seems pretty obvious: change your path (in /etc/environment), or move your /usr/install/bin/install-info, so that it's not the one that is found first. -- package wget 1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444917 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- package wget 1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444917 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 444917] Re: package wget 1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Apologies, here it is: d...@susruta:~$ dpkg -S `which install-info` dpkg: /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux//install-info not found. d...@susruta:~$ And I think this answers the question. I've added the TeX path to my .bashrc before $PATH. I did this in ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc. I've changed those round, but the problem persists. Hmm. Now I get this: d...@susruta:~$ dpkg -S `which install-info` dpkg: /usr/local/bin/install-info not found. d...@susruta:~$ And although I've undone the PATH problem, I now get this: d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ ls -l inst* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 2009-10-05 15:49 install-info - /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux/install-info d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ 2009/10/8 Micah Cowan mi...@cowan.name Hi Dominik, thanks very much. Actually, I need you to type: dpkg -S `which install-info` not dpkg -S which install-info But so far I can say this: the output from your install-info --version is different from what it ought to be. Jaunty's install-info is dpkg's (and from the dpkg -S output you gave, dpkg agrees). Your dpkg version is the same one I have; but it doesn't say GNU install-info 4.12, it says Debian install-info version 1.14.24ubuntu1, which identifies it as the one that comes from dpkg. And GNU install-info 4.12 can't come from the latest Jaunty texinfo package anyway (which you've already shown as not installed), since that package is currently at 4.11.dfsg.1-4. The problem is clearly that install-info is not invoking the one at /usr/sbin/install-info, as it expects to, but some other one that's been injected in a directory closer to the start of your PATH environment variable. So it's not a bug in wget, nor in dpkg. The remaining question is, where is it, and where did it come from, and what do all of you have in common that is provoking this symptom. The corrected dpkg -S command above should help us discover that. An additional item: GNU install-info shouldn't emit this error _either_, provided it was configured at build time to look in the correct place for dir. texinfo's ginstall-info is misconfigured* to look at /dir, and apparently so is your install-info, which is why, when it doesn't find /dir (or whatever file it's misconfigured to look for instead of /usr/share/info/dir), it complains that you didn't tell it where to put the wget info entry. * misconfigured, but possibly intentionally, if the packager was worried about Bad Things Happening when both dpkg's install-info and ginstall-info are messing with the same file, in possibly incompatible ways. If any of you are still waiting around for a workaround to your borked situation, note that if you edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/wget.postinst (as root), and replace install-info with /usr/sbin/install-info, and then run sudo dpkg --configure --pending, it should resolve the situation. Please don't stop participating in this bug, though, so we can find out where the glitch came from, and inform the appropriate people so they can fix it. I did this edit, and got: d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/info/wget.postinst [sudo] password for dom: d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ sudo dpkg --configure --pending Setting up wget (1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1) ... blank line But when I tried Synaptic and reinstalled wget, just to see, I got this: E: wget: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 and now when I run dpgk I get: d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ sudo dpkg --configure --pending Setting up wget (1.11.4-2ubuntu1.1) ... install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information. dpkg: error processing wget (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: wget d...@susruta:/usr/local/bin$ Looking again at /var/lib/dpkg/info/wget.postinst, I see that it has been re-written back to it's original form, with no /usr/sbin/ prefix. Okay, I see. Synaptic re-writes wget.postinst, stripping that prefix.
