[Bug 1783861] Re: USB Printer not recognized by Ubuntu 18.04

2018-07-26 Thread Don Levin
Solved! A few days ago I unplugged and reinserted it at both ends but
still couldn't print. However, after making man software changes and
still not printing, I unplugged the USB cable, flexed it at both ends,
and reinserted it and Ubuntu immediately detected the printer, warned
about drivers, and HP Device Mgr can print a great test page. Please
note that the HPLIP that comes with Ubuntu 18.04 is missing dependencies
and will not work without changes. Thanks!

[Bug 1783861] [NEW] USB Printer not recognized by Ubuntu 18.04

2018-07-26 Thread Don Levin
Public bug reported:

This printer worked great prior to Ubuntu 18.04. Days of repeated fresh ubuntu
18.04 installs and trying stock hplip, removing and reinstalling it, removing
it (all with pkg mgr), downloading and running latest HPLIP script, the printer
is not seen by USB (it is on, power switch blinks, USB cable installed, tried
different USB ports. PC is brand new. lsusb does not show printer. ls -l
/dev/usb/lp* /dev/bus/usb/*/* says '/dev/usb/lp*': No such file or dir. sudo
usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 says can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'. hp-info -i says
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.18.6)
Device Information Utility ver. 5.2
error: No device found that support this feature.
I've installed HPLIP many times with ubuntu 17 and older ones with very little
trouble.
I tried installing HPLIP without AppArmor and with it, but didn't matter. I
have the req'd repositories but NOT third part software.

I ran sudo apt-get update in a terminal and it ran too quickly to have worked
correctly (I think).

[Bug 1163957] Re: Stalls while preconfiguring packages

2013-04-05 Thread Don Levin
I have two desktops that stop updating. On step (1) above, update-
manager stalls. I open a new terminal, but don't know how to do step
(2) unselect bus. Can someone please explain how to do steps 2 thru 5?
If I can't fix this, can I wait a few days and try running the updater
(hoping it's fixed)?

[Bug 818227] [NEW] keyboard login problem

2011-07-29 Thread Don Levin
Public bug reported:

A fairly new pc running 11.04 with latest updates and BIOS. During
login, each key must be depressed for about one second until a dot
appears. I reloaded 11.04 in June and it fixed this problem but weeks
later, after updates, it came back. All this occurred w/orig BIOS. I
updated BIOS (AFTER problems) but didn't fix it. I tried Sys sets
Assis Tech Keybrd and tried setting Only Accept Long Keypresses and
setting it short, but had no effect. I tried disabling gdm by sudo
sys-rc-conf and by gdm, put X under ALL run levels, rebooted and no
effect ie same gui with slow key read. Swapped keyboards, no change.
My other pc, running 11.04, works ok. It's 1.5 years old, the problem
one is only 6 months old. After login, keyboard works perfect.

[Bug 578400] Re: Opening QCad manual from within the program fails on Lucid

2010-10-18 Thread Don Levin
I'm using 64 bit version of ubuntu 10.04.
I went into /usr/share/doc/qcad/html and did: sudo gunzip qcaddoc.adp.gz
and did: sudo ln -s /usr/share/doc/qcad/html/qcaddoc.adp /qcaddoc.adp
As root, I edited the file qcaddoc.adp and replaced
DCF ref=index.html with DCF ref=/usr/share/doc/qcad/html/index.html and
section ref=index.html with section
ref=/usr/share/doc/qcad/html/index.html
by manually copying and pasting.
I repeated this for license, preface, etc down to index2.html.
I IGNORED all lines with html#number, like license.html#1_1.
I edited a total of 42 lines, which is not a big deal. The Help manual should
work immediately
after you save the qcaddoc.adp file.

Re: [Bug 242986] Re: gpib-modules-source will not compile

2009-09-16 Thread Don Levin
Thank you. I purchased an Agilent 5810 LAN/gpib gateway and use LAN
commands, which are converted to GPIB. I later learned of a $150
USB/GPIB converter. I've had too much trouble from GPIB in the past on
Fedora and Ubuntu.

Note, there may be a need to use a different function rather than
find_task_by_vpid() based on name spaces. I'm not an expert and the
call I used assumes the process is in the same name space which I
suspect is valid and seems to work.

Intrepid, running OO 2.4.1, I added PPA suggested above, completed all
instructions up to Building your source package (didn't do the
Building stuff). I created keys, added lines to sources.list manually,
added PPA using SysAdminSS etc, rebooted, opened new Word doc, opened
internet page, Editselect All, and in Word did EditPaste and OO
crashed.
