Hi, That's a very good question. I have no idea. But I was able to get around this issue by removing this strange version I had and installing the newer version. I think the key here is the 3D stuff (OpenGL). In my case, what I noticed as the culprit was the screensaver. I'm being affected by this very same error. Only difference is that, in my case, I never saw a crash while I was using the system. But whenever it stays idle for a long time (i.e. during night time), I get a dialog saying something like Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode... and Xorg.0.log contains exact same fatal error message: failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error. I have same problem with Dell Optiplex 755 with Intel chipset and using both kernel 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.34-020634. In my case, the issue never happened while I'm actively using the system but after a long idle time (usually during night time). One more detail: I had a 3D screensaver configured.
