[Bug 295677] Re: Please sync sl-modem 2.9.11~20080817-1 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main).

Sync request ACK'd. The current Debian package includes relevant

Changelog since last sync from Debian 2.9.9d+e-pre2-5:

  sl-modem (2.9.11~20080817-1) unstable; urgency=medium

* New upstream release. (Closes: #354908, #489289, #457637, LP: #144090,
#269855)
* Adopting sl-modem. (Closes: #471888)
* Removed the following patches since they are applied upstream:
+ patch to define URB_ASYNC_UNLINK if not set
+ patch that adds alternative MODULE_PARM function (module_param)
+ patch removing the inclusion of config.h
+ patch making a biarch build with lib32 package versions
+ patches fixing buils with kernel versions 2.6.16, 2.6.18 and 2.6.26
* Remove cmd.patch and pcireg.patch as they are applied upstream.
* Used quilt patch system.
  + Moved slmodem-class-simple-to-class-meins.diff to debian/patches/
+ 01_Makefile.diff: Makefile cleanup to not loose the user-specified
kernel version string.
+ modem_group.diff: set the default device group to dialout.
+ 02_dial_string_size.diff: enlarge dial string buffer to 128 bytes
  + 03_Makefile_2.6.12.4.diff: workaround in drivers/Makefile for a kernel
2.4 check accidentialy matching 2.6.12.4.
  + 04_sregs_init.diff
  + 05_st7554_license.diff: changed the MODULE_LICENSE string to
Dual BSD/GPL since the license is actually a BSD license clone.
  + 06_slmodem-class-simple-to-class-meins.diff: patch for
class/simple_class transition.
+ 08_ungrab_winmodem.diff: helper module to tell the kernel to keep away
from unsupported PCI id numbers.
+ 10_drop_privileges.diff: slmodemd privilege dropping patch.
  + 11_logfile.diff: place debug log in /var/log/slmodem.log.
  + kernel-ver.diff: workaround for pre-2.6.18 kernels.
+ README.diff: Dropped the TROUBLESHOOTING section from README and adapted
the feedback section, mentioned the transfer of the modem business to
Conexant.
+ debug_level.diff: debug log file is not for end users. Users shall use
-l number.
* Added fortify_source.diff patch to fix FTBFS with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2
  compile flag.
* Synch'ed ungrab-winmodem.c from

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ungrab-winmodem-20080126.tar.gz.
* Remove debian/control.backup* as I don't see any use for them.
* Update Standards-Version to 3.8.0.
* Added watch file.
* debian/rules: slusb support ends at 2.6.24, hence add a check for kernel
sublevel, to prevent the attempt to install non-existing slusb.ko. Thanks
to Maurizio Avogadro for the suggestion.
* Translation updates: Swedish, German, Basque, French, Italian, Czech,
Portuguese, Finnish, Japanese and Russian (Closes: #501038, #501043,
  #501065, #501102, #501108, #501213, #501225, #501701, #501632, #501593).
* New translation: Arabic (Closes: #501196).
* debian/control: Added Maurizio Avogadro to Uploaders field.
* debian/sl-modem-daemon.init: changes from Ubuntu
+ sl-modem-daemon initscript waits for aplay (from alsa-utils) to report
the card, as it appears in /proc/asound/cards before it is actually
available to slmodemd. This extra check defeats this race.
+ Remove hard and soft ulimits for locked-in-core memory. This daemon
unfortunately needs quite a bit of memory and it needs to be in core
because it's doing the real-time modem DSP. This deals with LP: #144468
and probably other bugs too.

[Maurizio Avogadro]
* debian/rules: removed code to append extra lines to modprobe.d file, since
they are statically appended in debian/sl-modem-daemon.modutils.
* The init script can now modprobe even if the slamr module has been
  blacklisted.
* Modified 11_logfile.diff: Fixed the log path as the slmodemd daemon runs
as unprivileged user and didn't have write permissions on /var/log.
* Added class_device.diff patch: since 2.6.25 class_device_add() and
class_device_destroy() has been renamed, modified st7554.c accordingly.
* Removed obsolete /etc/modutils file.
* Small enhancements to the modprobe.d file:

[Bug 296516] Re: bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly

2008-11-11 Thread Emmet Hikory
Lookiing at the patch, I don't see it changing the target to
UNRELEASED. As many developers rely on this to indicate whether a
given version has been uploaded, it is probably worth adjusting this as
well. Other than that, this looks exactly like what I wanted.

Now, to address the reason it might not do this: I'm guessing that the
result would probably be unsuitable for uploading to Ubuntu or a PPA
directly (as it seems to encourage a revision of -1). By using
UNRELEASED, the tool encourages the developer to double-check the
version and target before uploading, which protects against this to some
degree.

Re: Non-MOTU as MOTU Mentors and bad advice

2008-11-11 Thread Emmet Hikory
Charliej wrote:
On Mon, 2008-11-10 at 22:39 -0500, Scott Kitterman wrote:
I will confess that I don't pay as much attention to the Mentors program as
 I
probably should. I had no idea we were allowing people who weren't MOTU to
 act formally as mentors.

It is my understanding that UUC's are only allowed to mentor in the
junior program. The senior program is strictly for MOTU as these are
 MOTU hopefuls

This is a stunningly bad idea and should stop. I just finished trying to
 help
a novice mentee who was trying to upgrade his system to Jaunty because his
 mentor told him too.

IMHO (this is only my opinion and may not be the opinion of the MOTU
 Mentoring Reception Team) I disagree!

As much as I agree with Scott that in this case the provided advice
was flat-out wrong, and that the value of having those who have not
received technical review being recommended as mentors for development
is at best highly questionable, I wonder if establishing some set of
criteria by which mentors are judged (whether it be they being MOTU or
something else) is perhaps solving the wrong issue.

The Mentoring Program page (1) states that a mentor in the Junior
Mentoring Program will guide the new contributor (mentee) to find
his/her way into the community, present the different teams and guide
him/her through: [stunningly large list of technical tasks elided]. If
we are granting those without technical review the opportunity to act as
a Mentor, would it not be better to focus on the social aspects
(introduction to community, IRC best practices, team organisations,
common useful resources, etc.), and then concentrate the technical
training collaboratively in the #ubuntu-motu channel?

By having each mentor individually lead each mentee through this
vast list of activities, we're surely creating a lot of duplicated
training activity, which would probably be better concentrated in one
place. This has the advantages that many people can learn from each
explanation, those more junior can feel comfortable giving advice
knowing those more senior will provide additional detail if required,
and each new person gains greater familiarity with each of the
participating developers, increasing the strength of the team.

Further, with such regular discussions of technical tips tricks,
those MOTU who may have forgotten some detail will have it refreshed,
and those providing training can build practice to better participate in
MOTU School sessions.

To me, the important part of the mentoring process is that any
mentee has someone to turn to as a last resort when other resources are
insufficient, and someone who can provide advice as to possible avenues
for them to investigate. By structuring the program to encourage more
communication using existing channels, and encouraging mentors to
provide good links to useful shared documentation, we accomplish these
goals, while also improving our shared knowledge, building stronger
relationships, and sorting out much of the documentation that is
suffering from bitrot.

Ideally, except with dealing with social issues, or helping find
something to do, or other relatively personal matters, most mentors
should be directing their mentees to high-quality shared documentation
explaining the concepts in question, and encouraging them to use typical
communications fora to explore any questions or concerns that may be
raised. In such an environment, I don't see any issue with trusting any
Ubuntu Member to provide useful guidance, as there is some reasonable
assurance that the provided advice matches current best practices and
that further discussion forms part of the shared culture that makes us
so effective.

[Bug 296516] [NEW] bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly

2008-11-10 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

When using bzr merge-upstream to pull a new revision, debian/changelog
should automatically be updated with the recommended version number and
New Upstream snapshot when pulling from trunk, or New Upstream
version when pulling from an appropriate tag. In the simple case where
there are no conflicts, this allows the user to simply use debcommit to
push the updated state of the package to the bzr repository for the
package. In the more complex case, the user may need to adjust a couple
things before being able to use debcommit, but can use dch normally to
further update the changelog in preparation for debcommit. For extra
portability between distributions and compatibility with standard
practice when using VCS management of packaging, the special target
UNRELEASED should be used in the changelog when it is updated (e.g.
dch -v 1.2.3+bzr7477-1 -D UNRELEASED New upstream snapshot).

[Bug 288320] Re: Networkless Ubuntu MID install hangs at Scanning archive...

2008-10-29 Thread Emmet Hikory
This happens because apt-setup believes that the MID install is a
netboot install, and so does not create a working /etc/apt/sources.list,
instead relying on choose-mirror to build one based on the preseeded
mirror information. As choose-mirror is unable to download the required
information from the mirror without a network, it enters a loop.

The appropriate way to fix this for the MID image is to build the image
in the same manner as other images are built.

The fix for ubiquity would be to somehow trap choose-mirror's INPUT
critical mirror/bad and provide the user with a graceful means to exit
(either to quit the installer, or to force different behaviour in apt-
setup and continue).

2008-10-26 Thread Emmet Hikory
Yes, this needs to be fixed in intrepid. However, it also needs to be
fixed in Dapper, Gutsy, and Hardy. It should be fixed by sync/merge for
Jaunty. The fix for older releases requires a fair bit of investigation
against rdepends to determine how many packages need adjustment, and
what sort of adjustment, and I don't think it ought be considered before
release. Please subscribe motu-sru as the investigation is completed
for each of the affected releases.

2008-10-26 Thread Emmet Hikory
-6 in unstable is apparently has a regression, and the debdiff is big
due to patch renames. -5 in lenny fixes the problematic issue, and is
recommended by the Debian Maintainer for use in Ubuntu. Patch
(attached) does not appear to affect ABI.

Compilation, installation, and limited run-test of msynctool seem to
indicate that no rebuilds are required.

 Dear motu-release!

In order to reduce misunderstandings, the MC would like to request that
you, motu-release, come up with a proposal for a charter for yourself.
We'd like to be able to discuss and approve it at the next MOTU Meeting,
 if possible.

It's been a while, and you've all been busy chasing the release.
Great job on handling the final transitions and getting the RCbugs
queue down to a manageable size for the SRU team. Now that there's a
little breathing space, would it be possible to revisit a charter and
bring it to a MOTU Meeting in the near future? Perhaps for the 14th
of November?

[Bug 289016] [NEW] The Display Properties applet should scale to fit in 640x480

2008-10-25 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When playing full-screen games, if there is a crash in the game, it is
not uncommon to end up in X with the resolution used by the game. For
those of us with limited 3D accelleration, this is often 640x480. The
simple solution to restore the normal desktop is to open display
properties and reset the resoluton to the correct value. Unfortunately,
it is impossible to see the buttons at 640x480, so the user is forced to
guess.

Logging out and logging back in is not a useful workaround, because it
may save the session, and corrupt user configuration of the panel icons.
Stopping applications manually and hard-killing X is not a useful
workaround because the user may not be able to access some applications
(painted offscreen), and may well lose interesting data (e.g.
notifications, various message protocols, state of long-running shell
jobs in terminals, etc.).

[Bug 288320] Re: Networkless Ubuntu MID install hangs at Scanning archive...

2008-10-25 Thread Emmet Hikory
There's a couple short-term workarounds available:

1) Use preseeding to disable language selection on install, and force
en_US. This is bad because many users will have networking at install
time.

2) Modify livecd-rootfs to install a bunch of common langpacks on the
livefs, and remove the unused ones (rather than trying to add them
later). This is what is done on the DVD.

Either of these only masks the problem for certain classes of user, and
neither addresses the core issue.

[Bug 284857] Re: Abiword crashes on using Create and modify styles... from the format menu

2008-10-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
From the stacktrace, it appears that the problem is the lack of gtk-
engines-ubuntulooks. In Xubuntu Desktop, this works fine as both
packages are seeded. In Ubuntu Desktop, abiword crashes because the
desired theme engine is missing. abiword should at least Recommend if
not Depend upon gtk-engines-ubuntulooks.

[Bug 287857] Re: Prompting for step 5 in --automatic mode only when not in --debug mode

2008-10-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
The cause of this bug is that kourou is not passing the arguments
provided in the Exec: block of the .desktop file to the launched
application. As a result, ubiquity is not being launched with the
--automatic option, although the .desktop file clearly indicates this is
the correct behaviour.

This was verified by modifying .desktop files for other applications
with arguments and noting that the arguments were ignored on launch.
Once kourou honours arguments, ubiquity should just work.

[Bug 287225] Re: Uses Windows conventions for file types

2008-10-22 Thread Emmet Hikory
Much of the documentation on the Ubuntu wiki pages refers to Debian
format packaging and Debian format packages. A deb file is a
common colloquial reference to such a file. The use of colloquial
constructions in package descriptions is quite common.

Further, I strongly agree with Lars that it is inappropriate to refer to
packages not produced by the Debian project as Debian Packages.
Whether .deb packages is correct or not is open to some debate, but
the solution requested in the description is not appropriate for
application.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtklookat

Please remove gtklookat from intrepid and blacklist from future imports.

gtklookat FTBFS, is unsupported upstream, is redundant to other VRML
viewers in the archive, has several RC bugs in Debian, has not been
updated in Debian in 383 days, and is known to render incorrectly for
certain video drivers.

[Bug 284775] [NEW] Please remove openvrml from intrepid

2008-10-16 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Please remove openvrml from intrepid.

The current package FTBFS on intrepid, has no rdepends, and is well out
of sync with current upstream practices (despite the versioning, the
packaging is more well suited to 0.15.x than 0.17.x).

Please do not blacklist this, as the packaging is expected to be
improved for squeeze, which should be suitable for import into jaunty.

[Bug 196135] Re: Timidity shouldn't depend on freepats

2008-10-15 Thread Emmet Hikory
While I agree that timidity currently has no means to autodetect the
configuration, I'd think that dropping the configuration file in
/etc/timidity/fluidr3_g[ms].cfg would make it easier for the user to
select an alternate configuration by manual editing of timidity.cfg.

[Bug 163727] Re: soundfont does not seem to get automatically installed

2008-10-14 Thread Emmet Hikory
I've thought about this bug a lot over the past while, and I'm not going
to fix it. With the fix in bug #196135, it's about as close as is
sensible as long as size matters, especially as timidity is now more
widely integrated into gstreamer through wildmidi. freepats does most
of the job for the simple use case, fluid-soundfont is clearly suggested
for people who want something more, and there's flexibility to support
more soundfonts as desired.

So, thank you for filing the bug : it's provided a wealth of inspiration
towards improving the state of MIDI in Ubuntu in general. There are now
soundfonts available, timidity actually plays sounds by default, and
gstreamer can handle MIDI, which integrates well with the default
desktop. That timidity itself doesn't force ths installation of a full
soundfont should be relatively unimportant at this point. If you feel
strongly that the bug *should* be fixed, and that it's worth the
installation of a full soundfont, please reopen.

[Bug 282209] [NEW] Repeated CRITICAL **: nm_utils_ssid_to_utf8: assertion `ssid != NULL' failed in .xsession-errors

2008-10-12 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

When running network manager, I get ** (nm-applet:6505): CRITICAL **:
nm_utils_ssid_to_utf8: assertion `ssid != NULL' failed in my .xsession-
errors file every minute or so. While this acts as a crude timing
measure to help understand the timing of errors from other applications,
it's surely indicative of something being wrong somewhere.

I've encountered this bug several times before. I believe it to be a

clearing all the settings in /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd.
This does not require any changes to xorg.conf.
