[Bug 296516] Re: bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly
Lookiing at the patch, I don't see it changing the target to UNRELEASED. As many developers rely on this to indicate whether a given version has been uploaded, it is probably worth adjusting this as well. Other than that, this looks exactly like what I wanted. Now, to address the reason it might not do this: I'm guessing that the result would probably be unsuitable for uploading to Ubuntu or a PPA directly (as it seems to encourage a revision of -1). By using UNRELEASED, the tool encourages the developer to double-check the version and target before uploading, which protects against this to some degree. -- bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296516 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: Non-MOTU as MOTU Mentors and bad advice
Charliej wrote: On Mon, 2008-11-10 at 22:39 -0500, Scott Kitterman wrote: I will confess that I don't pay as much attention to the Mentors program as I probably should. I had no idea we were allowing people who weren't MOTU to act formally as mentors. It is my understanding that UUC's are only allowed to mentor in the junior program. The senior program is strictly for MOTU as these are MOTU hopefuls This is a stunningly bad idea and should stop. I just finished trying to help a novice mentee who was trying to upgrade his system to Jaunty because his mentor told him too. IMHO (this is only my opinion and may not be the opinion of the MOTU Mentoring Reception Team) I disagree! As much as I agree with Scott that in this case the provided advice was flat-out wrong, and that the value of having those who have not received technical review being recommended as mentors for development is at best highly questionable, I wonder if establishing some set of criteria by which mentors are judged (whether it be they being MOTU or something else) is perhaps solving the wrong issue. The Mentoring Program page (1) states that a mentor in the Junior Mentoring Program will guide the new contributor (mentee) to find his/her way into the community, present the different teams and guide him/her through: [stunningly large list of technical tasks elided]. If we are granting those without technical review the opportunity to act as a Mentor, would it not be better to focus on the social aspects (introduction to community, IRC best practices, team organisations, common useful resources, etc.), and then concentrate the technical training collaboratively in the #ubuntu-motu channel? By having each mentor individually lead each mentee through this vast list of activities, we're surely creating a lot of duplicated training activity, which would probably be better concentrated in one place. This has the advantages that many people can learn from each explanation, those more junior can feel comfortable giving advice knowing those more senior will provide additional detail if required, and each new person gains greater familiarity with each of the participating developers, increasing the strength of the team. Further, with such regular discussions of technical tips tricks, those MOTU who may have forgotten some detail will have it refreshed, and those providing training can build practice to better participate in MOTU School sessions. To me, the important part of the mentoring process is that any mentee has someone to turn to as a last resort when other resources are insufficient, and someone who can provide advice as to possible avenues for them to investigate. By structuring the program to encourage more communication using existing channels, and encouraging mentors to provide good links to useful shared documentation, we accomplish these goals, while also improving our shared knowledge, building stronger relationships, and sorting out much of the documentation that is suffering from bitrot. Ideally, except with dealing with social issues, or helping find something to do, or other relatively personal matters, most mentors should be directing their mentees to high-quality shared documentation explaining the concepts in question, and encouraging them to use typical communications fora to explore any questions or concerns that may be raised. In such an environment, I don't see any issue with trusting any Ubuntu Member to provide useful guidance, as there is some reasonable assurance that the provided advice matches current best practices and that further discussion forms part of the shared culture that makes us so effective. -- Emmet HIKORY -- Ubuntu-motu mailing list Ubuntu-motu@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-motu
[Bug 296516] [NEW] bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb When using bzr merge-upstream to pull a new revision, debian/changelog should automatically be updated with the recommended version number and New Upstream snapshot when pulling from trunk, or New Upstream version when pulling from an appropriate tag. In the simple case where there are no conflicts, this allows the user to simply use debcommit to push the updated state of the package to the bzr repository for the package. In the more complex case, the user may need to adjust a couple things before being able to use debcommit, but can use dch normally to further update the changelog in preparation for debcommit. For extra portability between distributions and compatibility with standard practice when using VCS management of packaging, the special target UNRELEASED should be used in the changelog when it is updated (e.g. dch -v 1.2.3+bzr7477-1 -D UNRELEASED New upstream snapshot). ** Affects: bzr-builddeb (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: New ** Changed in: bzr-builddeb (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist -- bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296516 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 288320] Re: Networkless Ubuntu MID install hangs at Scanning archive...
This happens because apt-setup believes that the MID install is a netboot install, and so does not create a working /etc/apt/sources.list, instead relying on choose-mirror to build one based on the preseeded mirror information. As choose-mirror is unable to download the required information from the mirror without a network, it enters a loop. The appropriate way to fix this for the MID image is to build the image in the same manner as other images are built. The fix for ubiquity would be to somehow trap choose-mirror's INPUT critical mirror/bad and provide the user with a graceful means to exit (either to quit the installer, or to force different behaviour in apt- setup and continue). ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu Intrepid) Status: Confirmed = Triaged -- Networkless Ubuntu MID install hangs at Scanning archive... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288320 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yes, this needs to be fixed in intrepid. However, it also needs to be fixed in Dapper, Gutsy, and Hardy. It should be fixed by sync/merge for Jaunty. [Bug 289016] [NEW] The Display Properties applet should scale to fit in 640x480
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center When playing full-screen games, if there is a crash in the game, it is not uncommon to end up in X with the resolution used by the game. For those of us with limited 3D accelleration, this is often 640x480. The simple solution to restore the normal desktop is to open display properties and reset the resoluton to the correct value. Unfortunately, it is impossible to see the buttons at 640x480, so the user is forced to guess. Logging out and logging back in is not a useful workaround, because it may save the session, and corrupt user configuration of the panel icons. Stopping applications manually and hard-killing X is not a useful workaround because the user may not be able to access some applications (painted offscreen), and may well lose interesting data (e.g. notifications, various message protocols, state of long-running shell jobs in terminals, etc.). ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- The Display Properties applet should scale to fit in 640x480 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 288320] Re: Networkless Ubuntu MID install hangs at Scanning archive...
There's a couple short-term workarounds available: 1) Use preseeding to disable language selection on install, and force en_US. This is bad because many users will have networking at install time. 2) Modify livecd-rootfs to install a bunch of common langpacks on the livefs, and remove the unused ones (rather than trying to add them later). This is what is done on the DVD. [Bug 287857] Re: Prompting for step 5 in --automatic mode only when not in --debug mode
The cause of this bug is that kourou is not passing the arguments provided in the Exec: block of the .desktop file to the launched application. As a result, ubiquity is not being launched with the --automatic option, although the .desktop file clearly indicates this is the correct behaviour. This was verified by modifying .desktop files for other applications with arguments and noting that the arguments were ignored on launch. [Bug 287225] Re: Uses Windows conventions for file types
Much of the documentation on the Ubuntu wiki pages refers to Debian format packaging and Debian format packages. A deb file is a common colloquial reference to such a file. The use of colloquial constructions in package descriptions is quite common. Further, I strongly agree with Lars that it is inappropriate to refer to packages not produced by the Debian project as Debian Packages. Whether .deb packages is correct or not is open to some debate, but the solution requested in the description is not appropriate for application. ** Changed in: system-cleaner (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Won't Fix -- Uses Windows conventions for file types https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/287225 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 163727] Re: soundfont does not seem to get automatically installed
I've thought about this bug a lot over the past while, and I'm not going to fix it. With the fix in bug #196135, it's about as close as is sensible as long as size matters, especially as timidity is now more widely integrated into gstreamer through wildmidi. freepats does most of the job for the simple use case, fluid-soundfont is clearly suggested for people who want something more, and there's flexibility to support more soundfonts as desired. So, thank you for filing the bug : it's provided a wealth of inspiration towards improving the state of MIDI in Ubuntu in general. There are now soundfonts available, timidity actually plays sounds by default, and gstreamer can handle MIDI, which integrates well with the default desktop. That timidity itself doesn't force ths installation of a full soundfont should be relatively unimportant at this point. If you feel strongly that the bug *should* be fixed, and that it's worth the installation of a full soundfont, please reopen. ** Changed in: timidity (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Won't Fix -- soundfont does not seem to get automatically installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/163727 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
