2014-04-18 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I tested on a KINGSTON v300 and a v100 and everything works fine.

I used the discard mount option as it seems to be the most efficient to detect
this misbehavior.
And then I started:

sudo apt-get build-dep libreoffice; apt-get source -b libreoffice

It worked fine, I also tried with periodic fstrim -v /
No problem either.

I'm now starting to do the same test on a Kingspec C3000.6 and several
other models from the same manufacturer.

What kind of heavy simple test can I run on my Kingston and Kingspec
SSDs to know if they also are affected by this kind of problems ?

A simple testing method should help build the whitelist/blacklist.

I have access to several SSDs from a lot of manufacturers, the only ones
that are not already whitelisted are Kingston and Kingspec, I have some
of them of various models, so I may be able to help.

I'm already using them with discard enabled, but I'm not usually doing
anything crazy on them. If I should compile LibreOffice or do some kind
of stress testing on them, I will if you ask me.

[Bug 1283003] [NEW] [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-02-21 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I found a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 !

I tried to pair a bluetooth stereo headset (A2DP compatible). The
pairing process goes well, but after that I can't select it on the audio
preferences.

When I select it, it only shows the last selected item options and don't do
anything. (he should switch to the headset output).
I must mention that it worked very well on Ubuntu 12.04.

This bug can be in the bluetooth stack or in unity-control-center or
maybe pulseaudio. I actually have no idea.

[Bug 1253361] Re: Printer driver installation freezes

2014-01-10 Thread Fabien Lusseau
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1248303 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1248303

I have the same problem with my Canon Pixma MP450 and Ubuntu 13.10 !

System-config-printer try to install gutenprint, but is gutenprint
already installed ?!!! (it's one of the default packages)

And it sits right there for all eternity. I think I could wait 2 years
it will still not time out or something ...

I rebooted, I tried on a fresh install, I tried to use the second option
Local Driver and it's even worst ! Forward doesn't do anything !

The only way to make this printer install, is to click on gutenprint,
then, you cancel very fast the gutenprint installation, then you have
the traditional list of printers ! And now it's working ?!? (yes it does
work !)

Please fix your sh*t ubuntu devs ! Please make your modifications less
random and untested. How in the world, is an option to bypass something
(local driver) not even tested in real life ?! You are embarrassing
everybody !

This printer should not even ask for a driver install, as it works
perfectly with what is already there !

And why asking to install openprinting-gutenprint when gutenprint is
already installed ?! What is the difference ?

Please explain yourself ! Remove this anti-feature ... Because right
there, it's not a feature, it's a bug, and a big one indeed !

It feels like somebody had a good idea but never had a canon printer
handy to test with, or even to know if it worked. Man, it's tiring
sometime to see all theses untested features ...

I think the idea is for users with canon printer requiring proprietary
drivers. And for that, it's good and neat. But if your only choice is
gutenprint, ... to download and install gutenprint a second time, in
case having one copy of gutenprint wasn't enough, it's bullsh*t !!! This
choice shouldn't be there. Even if it worked properly !

It should be said, man, give a little more effort in your code ubuntu
team, make it more error resilient, everything you do should be
bypassed. It's a printer install wizard, why is this so badly butchered
!

And it's not the first time we have something like that in Ubuntu, in fact,
it's every time something new is coming from the ubuntu internal devs. Don't
rely that much on the users to test things ! You are tiring them. If it's
impossible to keep updating everything every 6 month, just stop this nonsense !
I'm using Ubuntu from 6.06, so I'm not a quitter, but I know why one would
want to stop caring about such a distribution and start searching somewhere
else. Ubuntu should really start to Eat is own dog food. That means, if you
make a change, make it such that yourself or another developer can test it in
real life with real hardware on the development release so most of the bugs are
seen and fixed by someone that may know better.
It's faster and way more reliable than making a modification in the dark,
waiting for a user that had enough to shout his anger to you all, don't know
what really appended that made this mess, and having to spend the time to read,
understand and decrypt what the problem is.

The fact is, despite the popularity of canon printers, I'm only the
second one reporting that bug, nobody takes time nowadays to make a bug
report if their is a workaround (in this case that is using cups web
interface). It should warn you at how much of your users you have
transformed in uncaring zombies. Even myself, as a long time ubuntu
user, I feel like making a bug report is now becoming nothing else than
wasting my time, waiting for something that will never appends, so might
as well wait for the next release.

Sometime I think as Ubuntu as a Linux distribution developed by peoples
on their Macs ! Some bugs are sometime so blatant that it feels like
nobody is using it, even the developers ! (I have a lot of bugs like
that in mind, for example, when you open a .deb with the Software
center, the home of the software center appears, then, after some more
time, the deb installer pops up. It's soo confusing !! A new user
will think that the packets was not opened properly ... So why is this
already 3/4 releases with this bug. Is this that difficult to make a
Please wait screen so the home screen don't show up ?!)

So well, I'm rambling, but, I'm very very tired of this, Ubuntu is my
work tool, and I make all I can do to make it more popular (I tell
everyone interested with Linux, I make videos about it, I'm contributing
to the french wiki about ubuntu, etc ...), and I'm so disappointed by
the lack of interest the developers have about their own work. The 6
month schedule doesn't help them in that aspect ... But even with that.
What a lack of perfectionism. Sometime you have to sit back and fix the
little details that makes the difference between something good and
something you really want to use ! And I hope 14.04 will be the end of
this nightmare !

PS: I'm sorry for the anger level of my post, but I wasted so much time
this night trying to find what

[Bug 996535] Re: package zram-config 0.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-04-12 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I know what this bug is about (I think) !

This package use a set of scripts to check how much CPU cores you have to set
the number of virtual swaps accordingly.
The problem is, the scripts are checking for a text string (Processor) and
this string is usually here one time only.

But if you are using a Pentium M CPU like me, this string is here twice
and this confuses the scripts at upstart is trying to init zram.

To repair this package for us, the only thing needed is to make the
upstart job script a little wiser.

I myself don't think I have the knowledge to do that, but I will try !

[Bug 1054282] Re: No obvious way to restrict shopping suggestions from displaying adult products

2012-10-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Won't fix ?

It's totally ridiculous ! Just tell this to amazon and try to explain
them the problem ! They can implement an API with filtering on adult
content very fast I think !

And frankly, you want users, families, your grand mother, everyone of
every religions using Ubuntu ?

There is a real and clear problem here that can't be denied. This lens
has a problem as of now and should be removed of the defaults. Nobody
wants to have such a surprise on his computer.

Imagine the same thing happening with the default installation of
Windows© or MacOS©, that would be ridiculous and totally unprofessional
...

With all due respect, I find this attitude of denying every problems in
Ubuntu very unprofessional ...

I don't have any problem myself with explicit content popping up in my
computer but with won't fix you are telling that this shouldn't hurt
anyone? Please ... This is too big of a problem to seriously think there
is no problem at all ...

[Bug 473471] Re: [needs-packaging] FreeArc

2012-07-31 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I also think this bug to be relevant, we already have 32bits only
archivers. Arc files are becoming more and more common. Freearc is
working well on Linux but is not packaged.

I use freearc a lot (with wine because it's the fastest and easiest way
to install it nowadays).

Even on 32 bits it's way faster and compress way more efficiently than
7zip or Xz compiled for 64 bits.

Already tested on the latest kernel, it's working on upstream 3.5-rc4
and 3.2.21

But it's also working on the Ubuntu kernel (3.2.0-26-generic amd64),
just have to enable the support before compilation.

I will do the apport-collect thing, but i already know what is the
problem and the fix that need to be done (description).

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Linux 3.0 and later kernels have some experimental support for the
Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx chipsets. But it's not enabled on Ubuntu.

I recompiled the kernel with this module, and it's working fine with my
rt5370 wifi dongle. And this dongle work out of the box in debian Sid
and work on wheezy if I add the correct firmware.

It's already enabled in the Debian configuration of the 3.2 kernel,
Ubuntu is using the same kernel and have support enabled for the same
chipsets (rt35xx and rt53xx) for the pci variant of the module.

I think this was disabled by mistake.

Please add this to the kernel configuration on Precise and Quantal:

  CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
  CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

A little more about the rt35xx and rt53xx. Theses chipsets are used in a
lot of very cheap wifi dongle and arm devices such as Android Tablets
(Sometime compatible with Ubuntu Arm). They are very common and work
very well despite the very low price. There is an official Linux driver
on the Ralink Website, but it is nearly impossible to make it work. The
driver provided officially with the Kernel work flawlessly (based on my
  own experience).

- There is a package of backported network modules on Precise, and this
- contain a rt2800usb module that work with the rt53xx. But this package
- is nearly undocumented, and that was a lucky find. Nobody will do that
- instinctively in order to make that dongle work.

[Bug 1019561] Re: Please enable Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx support on the rt2800usb driver

2012-07-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
apport information

  CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
  CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

The

  own experience).

undocumented, and that was a lucky find. Nobody will do that instinctively in
order to make that dongle work.

[Bug 1019561] Re: 148f:5370 Please enable Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx support on the rt2800usb driver

2012-07-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I didn't recompiled the module I recompiled the whole kernel !

You are turning me crazy with that, it's just a kernel configuration
mistake !

You forgot theses config key:

CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

And without that of course there will not be support for this chipset.
Because it is disabled.

I haven't done anything special to make it work, I just added a config
time option that is (I really don't know why) disabled.

I can do all sort of things if you want. But I have the feeling you are
playing a game with me. It's so simple !

Without that:
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

It doesn't work

With that:

CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

It's working.

It's working on 3.5-Rc4, in 3.2.21 and even with 3.2.0-26-generic that
Ubuntu is coming with if I recompile the Kernel with this options (the
driver is already here in source !).

The apport-collect I'have done is without the modification but this
computer have two wifi cards. One on the mini pci and the other is the
usb dongle that is not working.

And this summary you just changed is not what I mean. I do want you to
enable the support for those chipsets, not just that specific card.

It's not a driver that is missing a card ID, it's a driver that has two
options disabled, and theses options are to make those chipsets work.

To sum it up: Please add support for Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx support on
the rt2800usb driver that is already in the kernel but disabled by
Ubuntu kernel team (or left disabled by not noticing it).

2012-07-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
And yes of course this doesn't work with 3.5-rc4 without those options
set in the kernel. I tested all sort of combinations. But if it's not
enabled, it's not enabled, I don't know what is so special about it ...
That seems so obvious. I must have been not clear enough because I don't
know why I should do all this work in pure waist just to prove you that
it's just a simple and common disabled driver thing.

[Bug 1019561] Re: 148f:5370 Please enable Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx support on the rt2800usb driver

2012-07-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I'm really sorry Christopher M. Penalver, but I have taken so much time
before sending this bug report to make sure I wasn't wrong, to be sure
that was not my mistake and that this bug was legitimate that doing all
theses basic verifications have droved me nuts.

I'm so sorry if you found me unrespectfull. But that's not the case. I'm
just tired.

Just to prove my good will, I have just compiled the last mainstream
kernel, linux-3.5-rc5, and the result is the same. I have to set:

CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

to make the rt5370 work. And I think this should be a good idea to also
add:

CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y

For those who use RT35xx chipsets that are I'm sure, in the same boat. A
driver is in the kernel, but is not compiled on Ubuntu for whatever
reason.

[Bug 1019561] [NEW] Please enable Ralink rt35xx and rt53xx support on the rt2800usb driver

2012-06-30 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Public bug reported:

CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y

There is a package of backported network modules on Precise, and this
contain a rt2800usb module that work with the rt53xx. But this package
is nearly undocumented, and that was a lucky find. Nobody will do that
instinctively in order to make that dongle work.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Fabien Lusseau
@Chris: We can also argue that having a global menu for anything make
the user maximize because this user don't want to move his mouse all
over his desk to only reveal a menu ...

I know I feel this problem, and I maximize nothing. Having this option
(use global menu only for maximized windows) will actually make my
desktop more efficient for unmaximized windows ...

I don't know why you are thinking the opposite, I think use global menu
only for maximized windows will not do anything about your fear of
... of what actually ?!

I mean come on ! It's not like someone will change all his behaviors
depending on (on large screens) 2% more wasted space.

And even me, that is extremely annoyed by theses recurring search of the
missing menu have not changed my behaviors at all in that matter.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-06 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Yes but if this is just an option for advanced user, this will trigger
productivity ... Now I am switching between autohide (that I hate
because I can't view the progression bar and all the indications on the
launcher) and never hide (which is just a big waste of space on dual
screen sets ... even with the smallest icon setting)

Now I use KDE ... Multi screen on Unity has become such a mess ...
I have a big problem related to the two screens having different maximum
resolution and filling a bug seems such a waste of time in here recently ...

I very pleased that we at least speak about what I was suggesting ^^
Not a full dodge window, but a simplified one. Just autohide when something
is maximized and never hide when nothing is maximized. Sort of a full screen
mode. And it's already too late for Precise I'm afraid.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-06 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I must also add to my later comment that I don't like KDE very much it's
an horrible mess of options, a lot are inconsistently placed. And I
don't want Unity to become like that. So if I'm requesting to add an
other optional behavior for the launcher, it's because I feel that it's
crucial.

As crucial as making unity on multiscreen setting with different
resolution not messing up when it come to maximize a Window. If a window
is too big for the little screen when I click maximize the window
literally jump to the big screen, I have to resize the window to fit in
the little screen, then I can maximize ... (Is this bug already reported
? Because everyone laugh at Unity when they see me fighting with it when
I do some presentation with a projector ... And that's really
embarrassing ^^ )

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-02-15 Thread Fabien Lusseau
** Description changed:

I was using dodge windows in unity mainly because it make the launcher
go out of the way on maximized apps (like Kdenlive who is benefiting a
- lot from unity's capability of making the most place usable).
+ lot from unity's capability of making the most space usable).

- But I don't was never hiding the launcher when I use minimized apps
- (like firefox on the left and openoffice on the righ part of the screen)
+ But I was never hiding the launcher when I use windowed apps (like
+ firefox on the left and openoffice on the righ part of the screen)
because it helped me a lot switching with something else rapidly (like
  thunderbird, pidgin, etc)

What I think to be a good third behavior of the launcher is to hide
- itself when one app or more are fullscreen and if they are not being
+ itself when one app or more are fullscreen and if they are not, being
  always there.

There is some corner cases like if one app is full screen and the
focused app is not. But I think this will not bring some crazy bugs like
dodging windows did in the past.

[Bug 925403] Re: MLT doesn't work properly in oneiric

2012-02-02 Thread Fabien Lusseau
At first I thought I would be a bug due to an ABI change. Because of the
problem finding a symbol in a library.

I can be wrong but I feel that not finding a symbol in a private copy
seem to be really weird. I don't know how it is possible to build
something at the same time as an another thing and result with something
completely broken.

I think libmltavformat is just the interface that interact with libavformat.
And the recent upgrade of libav have broken libmlt.

I have tried to build mlt myself on the i386 to know if its solves the
problem. And now MLT behave the same as on the AMD64 machine (negative
effect over the video). There is something MLT expect libav to behave
that have changed I think.

[Bug 656519] Re: Alt+Space window accessibility menu should not be accessible by right clicking on a window title bar

2011-05-23 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Can I Know why this menu should be remove ? I use it a lot to move
windows between workspaces quickly ...

The duplicates (false duplicates I must say) of this bug show that
they don't want this menu to be remove, just accessible when the windows
are full screen.

If we remove this menu, we will lost some of the good points of having a
linux Desktop instead of an over one. Like making a window always on
top that I use very often to keep a gedit window on top of kdenlive.
Moving a window between Workspaces easily, making a Window workspace
omniscient (on every workspaces).

If the menu disappear, this features should be moved somewhere else to
be accessible with a pointer ... (a fourth button on the title bar to
bring the menu or something)

[Bug 741584] Re: Selecting a different lens should open it, instead of closing the current lens

2011-05-10 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I Think, all icons in the launcher should be clickable when the dash or

Because on a touchscreen, when the launcher is hidden, you are clicking
on the Ubuntu Icon, this bring the dash, and you have to click an other
time to close the dash and, again to open an other app or switch between
windows.

2011-04-07 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Something to illustrate.

I know it's just a detail, there is more important thing to do now. But
for I think this can improve the dash (because as you can see, every
apps that are more frequently used are already in the dock? So there
is no point to have this a second time in that. Theses apps should make
place to the over non docked apps.

[Bug 381059] Re: use compcache by default

2011-04-06 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I think this should be a very good idea. I have tested it on a old
Pentium 3 with 512 MO of RAM and it works really better on heavy RAM
usage.

I used 30 % of the local RAM to swap on with a high priority, and 512 Mo
of HDD Good old Swap partition with a low swap priority and it seems to
work transparently. Like if I have added an extra 512 Mo of RAM.

This PC have a hard drive so slow this pc is barely functional when he
is swapping. Now it's ok, everything works smoothly !

This is a great piece of technology, I love this idea and what it opens.

[Bug 752908] Re: Docked applications shouldn't appear in the favorites sub part of the Dash

2011-04-06 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Yes I agree, this is too late for natty.

For what I understand, It can be possible to blacklist the application
on the favorites and keep it in the rest of the dash. The software-
center show already the number of time an application is used. And I
think that we shouldn't break that little detail.

But now, I have an over idea, and why not keep this docked application in the
favorites, but filters it at the bottom of the list.
That just a thinking, I don't know what could be the best.

[Bug 742330] [NEW] Minimized windows don't appear anywhere when multiples instance of a same program

2011-03-25 Thread Fabien Lusseau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

On Natty (fresh install, updated to last).

If I open three windows of, say, firefox. I minimize two of the three
windows.

I click on the firefox icon on the unity dock , and well, nothing ...

If I do another click on the logo, every windows are unminimised, but
thats not what I wanted ...

I think the problem is exposé related, but It can be solved another
way and it will add a good new feature for the disabled and for those
who prefers selecting a window on a list (because a lot of windows are
opened, or because the title help more that the look of the window in
this particular program).

So my idea is to sort a list of opened windows by program when we right
click on the dock icon (just up to add to dock and quit)

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-20 Thread Fabien Lusseau
5. XawTV and all the tools for V4L (Video4Linux TV cards Drivers) that
are bundled with. There if a solution for this entry, and it is to add
XdTV (that is an updated version of XawTV) to the universe repository.
But it will not append ... (The bug entry for package required is here
for more than 3 years and no packages showed up)

SOLUTION: re-enable it in the official kernel, blacklist its modules
by default.

Yeah that's a good and simple idea, a dkms module or a module package
can be really easier to end user.

And why not just re-enable it by default ? because this module can cause
troubles only if we install some OSS only apps and we want to use it

very specific ... As I see, the only persons that are really touch be

This can be a good progress and everybody should be API with that ?

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-01 Thread Fabien Lusseau
OSS is NOT depreciated ! It an absurdity ! OSS3 is depreciated ! OSS4 is
maintained and ALSA OSS emulation is not depreciated (no mention of that
in the kernel documentation).

OSS is still used in a lot of Unix like, FreeBSD for exemple, and OSS
API emulation is one of the most important part of the interoperability
inside free software desktop solutions !

I know that pulseaudio can be an common intermediate between every sound
API, but pulseaudio is not perfectly compatible with OSS API and it
seems that OSS in pulseaudio is depreciated too ! We are in a dead end !

Like I said before, we have to work on OSSp integration or ALSA OSS
emulation in a separate package, and before that append, we NEED alsa
oss in the main kernel because it is the only way now to get it working
...

It don't know how to say that in english clearly but you are making
things in disorder ... Or I don't know how to say that, but you need the
replacement before dropping a good functioning (but not perfect) feature
...

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-01 Thread Fabien Lusseau
No ! What you view here is OSS 3 ! Not the Alsa OSS emulation ! ALSA OSS
is a part of ALSA not a part of OSS !

I said OSS3, OSS3 is OSS, such as is included with the Linux kernel.
And yes I agree, he is depreciated ! Plain and simple !

I totally agree with you ! And OSS 3 has never been in Ubuntu !

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-01 Thread Fabien Lusseau
To sum it up see this new screen shot.

You can view that yes OSS is depreciated, but inside ALSA section there
is OSS emulation, and nothing here to say that it is depreciated or
anything else

But I totally agree that ALSA OSS emulation is not perfect, but we have
nothing else in a perfectly working state, but this can change, and if
this appends, we have to use this new compatibility layer ! OSSp if it
works seems to be a good idea. But it is not in Ubuntu, and It seems
that something is not working has good has the good old OSS emulation
... But at least it is not complete removal ...

[Bug 155764] Re: [needs-packaging] xdtv aka xawdecode

2010-10-31 Thread Fabien Lusseau
We have a lot of trouble recently because OSS ALSA emulation is gone on
Maverick.

XdTV use ALSA to capture audio for analog TV cards !

XdTV required libnextaw0 and nextaw is on debian-multimedia too !

http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/x/xdtv/

All debian patch and everything is on debian multimedia repository.
Debian package (cvs version) works on Ubuntu, I think there is no
problem to import it !

Please I don't want to recompile my kernel to reactivate OSS during
all my life ...

That's the problem, I recommend you to see this:

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-10-29 Thread Fabien Lusseau
why is ALSA OSS emulation is so taboo here ?

It is not like OSS is here to create compatibility issues ...

Absolutely no programs use OSS by default ! Only programs that don't
support ALSA at all are requesting this compatibility layer !

By disabling ALSA OSS emulation you don't make the life of anyone easier
! You just break the only programs/games that will not be modified to
use ALSA instead. And break all V4L drivers !

If you plan to remove ALSA OSS emulation, remove all V4L from the
kernel, remove all the programs that only use OSS on the repositories.
And SAY GOOD BYE TOO ALL OF US !!!

I will not blame Pulseaudio like any other in this thread, I will just
say one thing. GNU/Linux as been a long time the place of choice, the
choice to use what you want, if you want it. And I don't want that
Ubuntu become Pulseaudio dependent !

And one other thing, Pulseaudio is easier than Alsa and his OSS
emulation ? I don't think so !! Pulseaudio add an other piece of
complexity in the linux audio jungle ! Why using it ? Why ? The peoples
who want it can install it if they want ! Why is it in Ubuntu base ? For
the most part of us it serve no purpose at all !!

I love Ubuntu ... I loved Ubuntu ... I think it's time to become serious
and stop integrating beta materials in Ubuntu ...

PS: Sorry, some sentences can be strange or unreadable, English is not
my natural language ...

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-10-29 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I have tried OSS4 !

Does not solve the problem at all !!!

1. XawTV and V4L doesn't work with OSS4 (I don't know why, I think
something is broken somewhere or an API change I don't know ...)

2. All Alsa Apps works like Crap with OSS4

3. Audacity don't work at all (OSS or ALSA mode)

There is no other solution ! Turn ON this ALSA OSS emulation ! It's not
like it will hurt someone or something !

ALSA OSS is a compatibility layer, not a full set of driver like OSS4 or
OSS3 (built in linux kernel and depreciated). It produce no conflict at
all !

Is it not obvious that it is just stupid to remove OSS compatibility ?
In the case that we don't use it, activating or deactivating OSS
compatibility serve no purpose. In the case that you actually use it and
no other solution exist to make what you want, you make Ubuntu painful
to use to a lot of peoples around the world !

I speak for french community here, In our forum, we have a significant
amount of people who are also horribly worried about the future of
Ubuntu !

I will be totally honest with you ... If this issue is not closed with
Ubuntu 11.04, I will consider to use another linux distribution ... And
it hurts me inside. I have contributed a lot to many ways for many years
to spread the word about Ubuntu, I have contributed on the translation,
contributing to the Ubuntu-fr Wiki. I feel like raped ... Or like
everything have no sense in this world ...

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-10-29 Thread Fabien Lusseau
I don't have the same way of thinking.

For me, the idea is everithing need to work before dropping such feature
! Not dropping the feature and break all compatibility !

You have to understand me ! And every other persons who have a video
capture device !

All this people have to go back to Lucid and keep using Lucid and wait
for an hypothetical ALSA version of V4L and XawTV that will nether exist
!

OSS can *prevents* all other programs from accessing the sound
device concurrently

Yes, but no OSS prevent to use OSS programs ! And because virtually
nothing use OSS by default, I think this OS lock syndrome is already
for most of us a problem of the past !

I know your reason, I know what you are trying to do. But Is it not too
early ? Or is it really a good idea ? I think this idea cause more
trouble that it drop ...

And like you said, you are investigating at using OSSp why OSSp not here
? And if it come, will it allow V4l users to use their TV cards ? I
don't think this will really work ... or at least work as great as it
worked before ...

And if you think this decision was great, just look at all the
duplicate bugs around ... The main problem is not dropping OSS but V4L
and a lot of other applications that don't support OSS, yes I know ...
but this work have to be done ! And he is not !

PS: let's forget about OSS4 that's not the solution and it 's too
complicated to install for end user. Ubuntu is user friendly or not ?
