[Bug 578158] Re: Gnote data loss: some of my notes are missing

2010-06-06 Thread Giles Weaver
I eventually discovered my old notes deep in a hidden folder. I can't remember
the location, but I think it was somewhere under ~/.local
Copying the notes over to the .gnote folder brought them back.

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message

2010-05-13 Thread Giles Weaver
For some reason Thunderbird now crashes with a segfault on startup, where it
crashed silently before. Thunderbird seems reliable with the Lightning add-on
disabled.
Fingers crossed the (Mozilla) release version of Lightning 1 will solve these
issues..

[Bug 578158] [NEW] Gnote data loss: some of my notes are missing

2010-05-10 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnote

I've been using Gnote since February, having previously used Tomboy.
Gnote imported my notes from Tomboy without any problems. After
upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 Gnote appears to have lost all the notes
I'd made since February.

I assume that Gnote has re-imported notes from Tomboy, and discarded my
newer notes.

2010-05-10 Thread Giles Weaver
Further to my previous comment, Thunderbird still is occasionally

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message

2010-05-06 Thread Giles Weaver
I had this problem when launching Thunderbird from the menu, but not from the
command line.
Running Thunderbird in safe-mode solved the problem, and I tracked down the bug
to the Lightning extension by disabling the extensions and re-enabling them one
by one.
The strange thing is that after using the calendar within Thunderbird +
Lightning from the command line, the problem went away, and I am currently able
to use Thunderbird with Lightning from the menu.

Very strange. I can only presume that Lightning rewrote some display
settings when I used the calendar.

[Bug 394656] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Bowtie - biological sequence aligner

2009-07-02 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

Bowtie is a popular bioinformatics package, which is very useful to
informaticians working with sequence data from the latest DNA sequencing
machines.

Source code is available from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/bowtie-bio/files/

Description:
Bowtie is an ultrafast, memory-efficient short read aligner. It aligns short
DNA sequences (reads) to the human genome at a rate of over 25 million 35-bp
reads per hour. Bowtie indexes the genome with a Burrows-Wheeler index to keep
its memory footprint small: typically about 2.2 GB for the human genome (2.9 GB
for paired-end). It supports alignment policies equivalent to Maq and SOAP but
is substantially faster.

[Bug 379057] Re: Virtualbox OSE mouse integration doesn't work in Jaunty guests

The vboxmouse driver wasn't in xorg.conf. Running that script adds the

It would be good if the VirtualBox mouse driver was automatically enabled.
Mouse integration worked without manually modifying the xorg.conf in previous

[Bug 379057] [NEW] Virtualbox OSE mouse integration doesn't work in Jaunty guests

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

I'm using VirtualBox OSE 2.1.4 on an Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit) host.
virtualbox-ose-guest-utils seems to be fully functional on Ubuntu 8.04.2 and
8.10 (both 64bit) guests, but not under either of my Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 alpha
(also both 64bit) guests. I can resize the display, but the mouse integration

I think that there is still a bluetooth stack issue under Jaunty, though the

[Bug 78470] Re: switching to current logged in user freezes gdm

2008-02-05 Thread Giles Weaver
I have the switch user white screen problem as described by exactt as well, but
I wouldn't call it the white screen of death.
I recently discovered that if I type in the correct password and hit return I
am logged back in to user A's session, so the problem is just that the
screensaver login box (and black background) aren't being drawn.

I guess that people are seeing either white screens or black screens
dependant on their video hardware, but the bug is quite possibly the
same. I had this problem in 7.04 as well. I think, but I can't be
certain that both 7.04 and 7.10 developed this problem some time after
installation, possibly after I fiddled with some graphics settings.

[Bug 133033] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing

2007-08-16 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

This is an excellent bit of software that allows editing of MPEG-TS recordings
from FreeView or other DVB TV cards.
It can be used to edit out adverts and convert MPEG-TS to MPEG files that are
compatible with standard media players and DVD players.
DVBCut will be an invaluable tool to people with Digital TV cards - they just
don't know it yet!

Source code and a 32 bit Debian package that works with Ubuntu can be found at
the DVBCut website (http://dvbcut.sourceforge.net/).
There isn't a 64 bit package currently available.

Description:

dvbcut is a Qt application that allows you to select certain parts of an
MPEG transport stream (as received via Digital Video Broadcasting, DVB)
and save these parts into a single MPEG output file. It follows a
keyhole surgery approach where the input video and audio data is
mostly kept unchanged, and only very few frames at the beginning and/or
end of the selected range are re-encoded in order to obtain a valid MPEG
file.

[Bug 79339] Mouse button support

2007-08-14 Thread Giles Weaver
This is a very common problem that is discussed in the forums.
There is even a how-to on getting mouse buttons working at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManyButtonsMouseHowto.

Apparently it isn't to hard to edit the xorg.conf to support all mice
buttons, but a lot of people are of the opinion that this shouldn't be
necessary. Its a step too far for a lot of newbies.

Ideally what is needed is a nice simple gui to configure the xorg.conf
(and Nautilus) to support mice with more than three buttons. Editing of
the xorg.conf monitor configurations would also be very useful.
