[Bug 1874453] Re: ubuntu/focal64 very slow to boot and reboots once

2020-10-21 Thread Haggai Eran
Thanks @giner, that's good to know.

If this is the case, why doesn't the official focal image use this
solution (rather than setting the serial port to File::NULL)?

[Bug 1874453] Re: ubuntu/focal64 very slow to boot and reboots once

2020-10-19 Thread Haggai Eran
@giner, I tried setting the uart1 to "disconnected" in the past, but
then the VM on Windows slows down to a halt.

@jchittum
After investigating it, I saw that indeed the OVF file contains "/dev/null". I
used packer in the process, which basically does if I understand correctly
creates a VM based on the Ubuntu vagrant box, modifies the VM, and then uses
vagrant package to generate a new box. Therefore, I'm not sure this is an issue
with Ubuntu.

If I just try to run the Ubuntu VM on Windows, I see that `File::NULL`
is translated into `NUL`, and the VM seems to be working fine.

I think I'll try to include the line `vb.customize [ "modifyvm", :id, "
--uartmode1", "file", File::NULL ]` in the packer-generated vagrantfile
somehow.

[Bug 1874453] Re: ubuntu/focal64 very slow to boot and reboots once

2020-10-18 Thread Haggai Eran
@jchittum, thanks for the fix. I validated it and it seemed to work.

I came into a related issue however - I've created an image that is
based on ubuntu/focal64 on a Linux system. When trying to use it on a
Windows system, I got the following error:

```
Stderr: VBoxManage.exe: error: RawFile#0 failed to create the raw output file
/dev/null (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND)
```

I believe that Ruby's File::NULL constant is translated into /dev/null
when utilizing the focal64 image on Linux, and then it gets written into
the resulting .ovf file.

I tried to do a bisect but I think it went bad at some point.

In any case, I see (#1580114) that the i915 driver was backported from
4.6-rc7 in 4.4.0-24. I'm currently testing 4.4.0-28, but so far it
haven't shown this error.

2016-05-16 Thread Haggai Eran
The issue started after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04. Previously I
believe I used 01.org drivers on top of the 14.04 kernel, and I don't
remember if it worked out of the box or not.

I'll try the mainline kernel.

[Bug 654988] Re: Unity doesn't mirror its interface for RTL locales

From what I read, unity 8 is moving to QML. Since Qt and QML bring full

(relatively) easily fixed there.

[Bug 1318673] Re: Modifier-only input switching with non-latin keyboard layouts has no effect under GNOME Shell

2014-05-17 Thread Haggai Eran
The fix in ubuntu proposed didn't fix my issue. I was testing version
3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.1. I tested with Caps Lock as the shortcut key, but
I've also tried with Alt-Shift. I am able to change the keyboard layout
once, and then it gets stuck in the second layout. The indicator didn't
change at all during the test. Should this be a new bug, or do you think
it is the same as #1244158?

[Bug 1312886] [NEW] gnome shell's calendar shows \u2236 in the event list

2014-04-25 Thread Haggai Eran
Public bug reported:

When I click on the clock in gnome-shell's top panel I see a list of
upcoming events. However, instead of a colon between the event's hour

[Bug 1244158] Re: GNOME: Modifiers Only keyboard layout switch have no effect

2014-04-23 Thread Haggai Eran
I believe I'm seeing the same bug in Ubuntu 14.04. I'm using Caps Lock to
switch layouts (set using gnome-tweak-tool). With the English layout:
$ setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: pc105
layout: us,il
variant:,
options:grp:caps_toggle

And with the Hebrew layout:
$ setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: pc105
layout: il,il,us
variant:lyx,,
options:grp:caps_toggle

(Not sure if it should show two ils in the layout field).

After using Caps Lock to switch from English to Hebrew, further presses
only change the indicator, but the keyboard continues to type Hebrew
keys.

I have gnome-control-center version 3.6.3-0ubuntu56 installed.

[Bug 654988] Re: Unity doesn't mirror its interface for RTL locales.

2013-09-15 Thread Haggai Eran
@Yaron,

The patches in 12.04 were only for Unity-2D. The patches I had for Unity(-3D)
were preliminary (libnux only), so they would have required some more work to
be used with 12.04. I don't think they will apply to current versions of Unity
without significant changes.
However, once Unity(-3D) moves to using Qt, it would benefit from the already
existing right-to-left languages support that Qt has, in the same way that
Unity-2D did, and it should become easier to support right-to-left languages.

[Bug 533200] Re: Window title misaligned in RTL languages

2012-04-28 Thread Haggai Eran
I offered a patch for this issue to metacity in 2010 (see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=612940), that would mirror
the window title. They didn't accept it, since they said it should have
been up to the theme designer to choose whether to mirror, or to
implement a different theme for RTL. The first method would work for
Ubuntu's theme, but not for more complicated themes such as Crux. I
tried to start discussing the extensions required to the theme files,
but never got any response.

[Bug 985626] [NEW] Missing latin keyboard layout when using selecting Hebrew in the welcome screen

2012-04-19 Thread Haggai Eran
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I hope I'm reporting this bug to the right package. After booting the
live-cd, I selected Hebrew as my language and picked Try Ubuntu.
Instead of setting two keyboard layouts: The Hebrew layout and the
English layout, I only got four variants of the Hebrew keyboard layouts,
and no latin keyboard. Since Hebrew has a different alphabet, this means
that I am unable to type latin characters, until adding the English
keyboard layout manually.

Please change the chosen keyboard layout to be contain both English and
a single variant of the Hebrew layout.

[Bug 927931] Re: [Upstream] RTL (CTL) is expected to be enabled in all cases by RTL users

2012-03-31 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi Yaron,

Thanks for bringing this up here.

Actually, my thought was to enable CTL at LibreOffice's startup, if a
relevant input method is set up, or even enable it while a user is using
LibreOffice, if the user changes their keyboard layout settings.
Changing it during installation can be problematic if the user sets
their keyboard layout only after the installation.

[Bug 871764] Re: Ubuntu right-to-left consistency

2012-03-19 Thread Haggai Eran
@Tim, Its true that the solution isn't a literal mirror image of a
left-to-right desktop. Right-to-left text shouldn't be mirrored in the literal
sense. However, we do need to mirror its alignment, i.e: right-aligned instead
of left-aligned.
The character ordering itself is of course from right to left, but that is
already supported by Unity and Nux through their use of pango.

[Bug 654988] Re: Unity doesn't mirror its interface for RTL locales.

2012-03-15 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi all,

I have created a small patch that will cause Unity to fall back to
Unity-2d when the current language is written from right-to-left. This
could be used as a temporary workaround, until Unity gains better right-
to-left support. The patch also allows overriding this behavior by
setting an environment variable (UNITY_ALLOW_RTL).

You can find the patch at lp:~haggai-eran/nux/rtl-fallback-to-unity-2d.
Comments and responses are welcome.

Regards,
Haggai

[Bug 952805] Re: The mediacard tests refers to irrelevant desktop icon and Places menu

2012-03-12 Thread Haggai Eran
Yes, I'm sorry for reporting this without checking the updated version
first. I was running checkbox on Oneiric when I noticed this issue. I
tried today the version in precise, and the text was different, although
there was another problem with the mediacard test there. I'll report it
using ubuntu-bug as you suggested.

[Bug 953160] [NEW] mediacard/sd test doesn't complete

2012-03-12 Thread Haggai Eran
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I tried running the mediacard/sd test on my netbook. After clicking
Test and inserting an SD card, a dialog asking what to do with the
card appears, and the SD card is mounted and appears in the launcher.
However, the checkbox test doesn't notice this and just keeps waiting
until it times out. It says that the verification of this test is
automatic, so I assume it failed to notice the SD card insertion.

[Bug 953160] Re: mediacard/sd test doesn't complete

2012-03-12 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi Jeff,

I tried watching mount as you asked. The mount line appears before the
verification dialog appears. I also believe that this dialog's
implementation depends on the SD card already being mounted. It knows
that this specific SD card has photos, and offers to open it with
Shotwell. I don't think it could have done that without reading into the
card's content.

2012-02-14 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi,

I tested the new version and it works great. I was wondering about
something that is related though. Usually, each user also has a keyboard
shortcut configured to switch layouts. I believe the default is Alt-
Shift. This doesn't seem to work in greeter. Only changing the layout by
pressing the indicator button works. Should I open a new bug regarding
this?

[Bug 871764] Re: Ubuntu right-to-left consistency

2012-02-12 Thread Haggai Eran
I think the state of Unity and Unity-2d are quite different. Unity-2d is
based on Qt, so they got very good RTL support from the toolkit. The
Oneiric version already contained patches to mirror the desktop. There
was some bug in Qt that caused it to crash in the RTL version (#836498),
but a workaround was found.

The Unity desktop is based on Nux, which is a less mature toolkit,
without such support. I've been trying to promote patches to Nux for
some RTL support (lp:~haggai-eran/nux/rtl-logical-packing), but it takes
a very long time. I also started working in the past on mirroring the
Unity desktop, but I'd rather not work on it until the Nux patches are
accepted (or until there is some other RTL support in it), since Unity
is a moving target, and I rather not keep merging patches.

I think Felix idea's nice. If a user used their default layout when setting

In addition, I would set the keyboard layout for the 'Other' user as the

would be the default layout there.

[Bug 654988] Re: Unity doesn't mirror its interface for RTL locales.

2011-11-24 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi Aslam,

The right-to-left mirroring is only enabled when the translation of the
QT_LAYOUT_DIR string in the current locale is RTL. I understand from
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/unity-2d/+pots
/unity-2d/ar/10/+translate that it is not translated yet.

Please note that until bug #836498 is fixed, turning on this feature can
make the dash almost unusable.

[Bug 664194] Re: reversed icons on forward/back buttons in Hebrew locale

2011-11-23 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi,

Could someone reopen this bug? It is not fixed in oneiric. I believe
there is some bug in gtk handling of stock icons's right-to-left
variants, since it seems that nautilus is asking for the
GTK_STOCK_GO_BACK and GTK_STOCK_GO_FORWARD, which should have support
for RTL variants, and the Humanity icon theme does contain links for
these variants (gtk-go-back-rtl and so on).

[Bug 836498] Re: unity-2d-places crashed with SIGSEGV in QScriptValue::call()

2011-11-07 Thread Haggai Eran
Yes, the crash occurs when I click on an item in the grid. I can
reproduce it by clicking the More Apps button and then clicking on one
of the applications.

I came to this conclusion by adding prints to the onClicked handler, and
seeing that it crashed before the handler is complete. It didn't crash
right after the dashView deactivation line, but removing the other line
(the line sending the activation to the lens) didn't have any effect on
the crash, while removing the dashView deactivation stopped places from
crashing.

Hi,

I've noticed that I can prevent places from crashing by removing the line:
 dashView.active = false
In the onClicked handler of TileVertical.qml.

[Bug 834487] Re: Add keyboard layout indicator to unity-greeter

2011-10-26 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi,

I've uploaded a patched package to a ppa (ppa:haggai-eran/ppa). You are
welcome to try it. I didn't see any unwanted indicators when using it.
There's still a problem that the indicator doesn't change when using a
keyboard shortcut to change layouts. I'd be happy if someone could guide
me how to solve this problem, since I can't seem to find a solution
myself.

[Bug 834386] Re: Mirror greeter in RTL locales

2011-10-03 Thread Haggai Eran
Mika, you say that you want the indicators to move to the left only once Unity
has full RTL support, but as I've said last month, the indicators are already
to the left in the current released version of the greeter. Unity greeter uses
a Gtk menu bar for the panel, and Gtk has automatic mirroring. It is the
current state is incompatible.
If the alignment with the desktop meme is that important, I suggest disabling
the current mirroring of the panel in the greeter, and leaving everything else
the way it is.
Note that the mirroring code for unity-2d has already been released (see bug
#654988), although they said that the code will remain disabled until Oneiric
is released.

[Bug 834386] Re: Mirror greeter in RTL locales

2011-09-26 Thread Haggai Eran
Would you like to disable automatic direction completely, or just force the
alignment?
Forcing the direction could cause some weird results with LTR user names in an
RTL greeter and vice versa. For instance, suppose there is a user name with
parenthesis, like Bob (jr.). In RTL directionality it would render as ‫Bob
(jr.)‬
We can force only the alignment, and keep the directionality detection, but
personally I think it looks a little wrong, when the user names aren't aligned
according to their writing direction.

Here's a patch lp:~haggai-eran/unity-greeter/keyboard-layout-indicator .

indicator to switch the keyboard layout, but if you use the keyboard shortcut
to switch layouts, it isn't updated for some reason.

[Bug 227326] Re: [upstream] caps lock key should not be polled directly - openoffice switches keyboard layout

2011-09-15 Thread Haggai Eran
Hi,

I've checked Libreoffice on Ubuntu Natty, and I think this bug is fixed
their. It seems that when using Caps lock to switch keyboard layouts,
the Correct accidental use of cAPS LOCK key feature is disabled
automatically. It doesn't correct any text, even when using Shift-Caps-
lock to use capital letters and not switch layouts. When using another
key combination to switch layouts, the feature works as expected.

[Bug 807921] Re: Unity tooltips doesn't show Hebrew characters

2011-08-20 Thread Haggai Eran
I looked into the code, and I think this may be due to how GetTextExtent works.
It seems to take the x and width fields of Pango's logical rect and sum them
together to get the text width.

I'm not sure, but I think it should take just the width of the logical
rectangle.

[Bug 821863] [NEW] compiz-dev missing dependency on libdecoration0-dev
