[Bug 1930641] Re: memory leak in xorg-server 2:1.20.9-2ubuntu1.2~20.04.2

2021-06-24 Thread Jan Newmarch
I swapped my environment (gnome-fallback, chromium-browser, evolution,
libreoffice, gnome-terminal) for a vanilla env of ctwm, xterm and
firefox. After 4 days the memory usage stayed at 0.6%. Confirm that it
is not a bug in xorg but in one of the other apps, as suggested by
Daniel. So I need to check all other apps to see which one is causing
the memory use and report it to the offending one. I've changed the
status of this bug report to invalid. Thanks Daniel!

Yes, and since it could be the desktop env, the gnome terninal, anywhere
really, I'm going to try real primitive: Tom's Window Mgr (twm) with an
xterm.

Well, it's not libreoffice nor evolution mail client. And I also tried
Unity with X instead of fallback, no better, so it doesn't look like
metacity. I'll try more experiments tomorrow

i don't think it is libreoffice. I last restarted X 4 days ago, and
memory usage has gone from under 1% to 8%. Libreoffice has stayed
unchanged at 459376K total (with 2 docs open). metacity has grown but
not conclusively. So I'll give it another week

I restarted the server, monitored it for a few days. The results were
inconclusive, so doing more careful logging over a longer period to see
if I can find a clear culprit :-)

[Bug 1860266] Re: ffmpeg symbol lookup error SDL_GL_GetDrawableSize

Hah! That's it - back in 2013 I built a local copy of libSDL in
/usr/local/lib and that has been stuffing me up. Removed it and all is
okay.

Thanks! Jan

[Bug 1470492] [NEW] Evolution gets wrong EWS Inbox

2015-07-01 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with evolution 3.10.4 and ews with no problems.
Upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10 and then 15.04 and evolution then gets the
Inbox out of order and with contents a single file dating 4 years back,
instead of 400 current msgs. Installing evolution+ews into a VirtualBox
Ubuntu 14.04 and VirtualBox Ubuntu 15.04 show the same problem. Weirdly,
another computer running Ubuntu 14.04 which was NOT upgraded still shows
the Inbox in the correct place in the folder list and with the correct
contents.

The still -working system:

I can't see any difference between these. I've attached screen shots of
the older ok and newer not ok versions. I tried reporting it upstream to
the evolution developers but they weren't interested as evolution 3.10.4
is marked as obsolete. I tried to build the latest version of evolution
from their source under Ubuntu 15.04 but too many old versions of
required build packages.

[Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-05-16 Thread Jan Newmarch
I've got a Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500. This computer only has HDMI and
mini DisplayPort outputs, no VGA. All the Desktop systems I have tried
to install (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc) have all failed because the screen is
totally unreadable, with graphics flashing all over the place and
nothing sensible to be seen. I managed to install Ubuntu 14.10 server
and installed xinit and twm (yes, those ooollddd ways of doing X!).
A barely usable system as long as only xterm was used. Trying to run
e.g. firefox was a total mess (photo attached). So it's not a window
manager issue, nor a GUI toolkit issue: this was absolutely minimal X.
Updating linux kernel to 4.0.2 didn't help. Ubuntu 15.04 was no good -
triple mouse pointers against a magenta screen.

Fix #32 worked and I can play 1080p movies such as Big Buck Bunny (a bit
jerky as no i965 loaded). But it only works once I have the server
install done - doesn't help Desktop installs.

I've also logged this as bug 90401 on bugs.freedesktop.org as HDMI i915
driver broken on Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500

[Bug 1453127] [NEW] Can't install Ubuntu onto Gigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500

2015-05-08 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 ontoGigabyte Brix GB-BXi7H-5500. This only
has HDMI and mini DisplayPort outputs. For the desktop install, the HDMI
graphics output was screwed up - nothing could be seen that made any
sense. So tried the server ubuntu-14.04.2-server-amd64 using a USB stick
prepared using unetbootin. The non-graphics install went fine (all
showing on the screen through HDMI) until quite late it hit Couldn't
download package libc6 (ver 2.19-0ubuntu6 arch amd64) . From there,
well nothing could be found. Can't give any screen dumps because
installation failed, and it has no default o/s

[Bug 737748] Re: Evolution Mail can't load the Imap e-mail from one account

2011-09-16 Thread Jan Newmarch
Accessing my gmail account from evolution using IMAP was fine until about a
month ago. I have no idea what I (or an upgrade) changed. My account has about
40,000 messages. Now evolution only loads the first 17,000, the latest dated
2007. Some more details:
- 2.32.2 reports 17,243 total, latest email 2007
- BUT 2.28.3 reports 47,916 and latest email today
- firefox to gmail.com reports 43,088 which is close enough to evolution 2.28.3

[Bug 799012] [NEW] Windows shrink to 10 pixels wide in waking from suspend

2011-06-17 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Boot into 11.04 with single laptop monitor (Dell Latitude D830). Suspend
okay on lid closing. Open lid with external 1080p monitor connected.
Many windows have apparently disappeared from the display (4 desktops)
but can eventually be found almost off the screen on the left-hand side,
a mere 10 or so pixels wide. They have to be dragged back onto the
display with ALT-F7 (mouse won't drag or resize them) and can then be
resized using the mouse. Other windows have just gone, and I have to
kill their PIDs before I can restart them from the Unity toolbar.

Under Ubuntu 10 I had no such problems, looks like a Unity issue. Any
solutions apart from regressing to Gnome 2?

[Bug 731696] [NEW] Left taskbar and top menubar only appear intermittently

2011-03-08 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-netbook

Using Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix as a 10 foot GUI. Running on HP T5735
thin client attached via DVI port to Panasonic plasma TV. Left hand
taskbar and top menubar show as purple bars of correct thickness but no
icons or text. If I move the mouse over the taskbar, it shows a white
box framed by a black box, of different widths. By guessing what they
are, I can click on a box and select a taskbar app e.g. 2nd from bottom
is Applications. Sometimes when redrawing screen, the icons flash up for
a second, and disappear again.

[Bug 716277] [NEW] Asus EEE900 netbook: can't load Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix

2011-02-09 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Testing 10.10 netbook remix on an Asus EEE900 PC (1Gb RAM, 8Gb disk) from a USB
stick. Observed the following behaviour:
- will boot to the stage of showing the menu bar with battery indicator, then
hangs (twice)
- will boot to show Test/Install dialog, then progresses after 10-20 minutes to
just showing the X Window cursor. Does not reach the ubiquity interface. On
pressing power button, drops to terminal interface and shows graceful shutdown.
Error at top: GTK Unknown user id. (observed about 10 times so far)
- successfully loads ubiquity interface for testing Ubuntu. Everything (almost)
works fine, but did see an error msg about no memory, should remove apps. (only
happened twice, in about 15 attempts)

Sorry, can't run uname, dmesg, etc because I can't get it to load
properly any more.

I have not attempted to install 10.10, seems too risky with this
behaviour on just trying it out!

[Bug 587107] Re: Many apps become unresponsive in after a while in 10.04

2010-05-31 Thread Jan Newmarch
Rebooted Saturday, now on Tuesday it is suddenly slower after waking
from suspend. 'man' took 14 seconds to show a page the first time,
almost instantaneous the second time. Similarly, Synaptic took 30
seconds to show the first time, almost instantaneous the second time.
F-Spot was 46 seconds 1st time, 1 second 2nd time. Watching top, there
was no change in swap memory reported during startup of any of these.
Desktop apps open: skype, ooffice, firefox, gnome terminal, evolution,
emacs. top shows:

[Bug 587107] [NEW] Many apps become unresponsive in after a while in 10.04

2010-05-28 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

After my system has been running for a few days, many apps become slow to
respond. This includes firefox and evolution, but also many others. For
example, running 'man' in an already open terminal window took 24 seconds to
show, and starting Synaptic took 45 seconds for the main window to appear,
which was promptly greyed out as unresponsive, and took a further 10 seconds
before it was un-greyed and a total of 75 seconds before I could use it. 'top'
shows
Mem: 2051976k total, 1946448k used, 105528k free, 196736k buffers
Swap: 2048276k total,16280k used, 2031996k free, 780408k cached
(Even while I was typing this, firefox was greyed out for a couple of
seconds!). That looks comparable to what I get after booting, running firefox,
evolution, ooffice, skype, etc, so no obvious memory problems

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2010-01-16 Thread Jan Newmarch
Lucid alpha 2. The problem still exists for mt MSI U100+. First seen in
Karmic. Bug did not exist in Jaunty, does not exist in every other
distro I have tried except Karmic and Lucid e.g. Fedora Core, Chrome are
fine. So it doesn't look like a bios bug since it only occurs in the two
Ubuntu distros.

2010-01-14 Thread Jan Newmarch
It is now the middle of January 2010, and I have been updating Karmic on
my MSI U100+ on a regular basis, including today. The problem still
remains, raising and lowering brightness. While this well-known problem
doesn't get fixed, I will remain on 9.04 on all my other machines and
maybe go back to 9.04 on the netbook too where it was not a problem :-(.

[Bug 369103] Re: Can't authenticate to exchange server after upgrade from 2.24.3 to 2.26.1

2009-10-23 Thread Jan Newmarch
It's working for me now, but in a strange kind of way. When I have the
http proxy set then I cannot connect to the exchange server. When I turn
the http proxy off, then I can. So at work I have to toggle the proxy on
to surf the internet through our firewall, and toggle it back off in
order to read email. This happens both with configuring firefox using
its preferences menu to no proxy/manual/automatic proxy config url, or
when the preference is set to system proxy settings and I use gconf to
set the http proxy.

[Bug 426719] [NEW] evolution doesn't show messages properly in email digest

2009-09-09 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Using IMAP to imap.google.com I get some emails that are message
digests. The evolution display shows the digest contents as email
message attachment. I can select the attachment and get offered choices
of emacs, text editor, etc. So far, so good. But when I select one of
them it shows a window with the headers such as:

but with the actual content not shown. An alternative IMAP client
(thunderbird) shows the content okay. I have attached a side-by-side
screen capture of evolution on the left, thunderbird on the right. When
I select the evolution message, it shows the content above, while
thunderbird shows the content inline and not the headers.

I saved the complete message from thunderbird. Apologies, I would have
sent it as an attachment, but this bug report limits me to one
attachment. It is:

[Bug 369103] [NEW] Can't authenticate to exchange server after upgrade from 2.24.3 to 2.26.1

2009-04-29 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Could connect to exchange server okay from evolution 2.24.3 (Ubuntu
8.10). After upgrade to evolution 2.26.1 (Ubuntu 9.04) I can no longer
authenticate to the server (message is password incorrect?).

I still have the old distro on a separate partition, but I couldn't get
exchange 2.24.3 to work any longer. When I used the old version I got:
Error while generating message list - table personal/inbox has 28
columns but 26 values were supplied. Not sure if these problems are
related or not.

Connection to the exchange server by the web still works fine.
Connection to a separate imap server works fine.

[Bug 271519] Re: Low volume, No sound: Intel HDA 82801J (ICH10)

2009-03-29 Thread Jan Newmarch
Maybe solved after all??? A follow up to teknoprep's and my postings
today.

Under Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 the volume has been really low. alsamixer
showed the output as 100%. But I booted today into Ubuntu 9.04 beta, and
there, alsamixer showed as only 50% output. When I boosted it to 100%,
the sound was back to normal for the first time in 6 months. But odder
was when I booted back into 8.10 - the volume was still okay! So it
looks like alsa wasn't getting/setting correct values in the Ubuntu 8.X
series but is okay in the 9.X series. At least, for me...

[Bug 297866] [NEW] evolution-exchange sends an email multiple times

2008-11-13 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution sometimes sends an email repeatedly. e.g. yesterday it sent
the same email at 2.13pm, 5.17pm and 5.18pm. This is from an exchange
account. Most other times it is fine. The email was not big, just a few
lines and was sent to just one person. The Sent folder contains the
repeated sendings. I can't see anything in the mail or other logs on my
machine, and really don't know how/where to start looking as mail sent
through an exchange server doesn't seem to write any logs on my machine.

Release is Ubuntu 8.10 but this also happened with 8.04. Evolution is
2.24.1.

[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume hibernate/resume cycle

2008-10-05 Thread Jan Newmarch
Bug has almost completely disappeared for me with Ubuntu 8.10 alpha5 out
of the box. Currently running kernel 2.6.27-4 and bug has hardly ever
happened for me with the 2.6.27 kernels, but always happened with 2.6.24
kernels and Ubuntu 8.04. Machine is Dell Latitude D830, reported in
previous post.

[Bug 276718] [NEW] Always uses Totem to play m3u files instead of user-set program

2008-10-01 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Trying to open an m3u file which contains funny WMA files that cannot be
(currently) handled by Totem/mplayer/... but can be handled by
RealPlayer. No entry for m3u in about:plugins. In mimeTypes.rdf the
FileExtensions=m3u lists the description as MP3 audio (streamed).
In Firefox preferences I changed MP3 audio (streamed) to Use
/opt/real/RealPlayer (default) after installing RealPlay and letting it
install Mozilla preferences. In about:plugins Totem is listed as player
for MP3 audio, no mention of (streamed).

Still uses Totem, not realplayer.

Edited mineTypes.rdf to set
  RDF:Description RDF:about=urn:mimetype:handler:audio/x-mpegurl
   NC:alwaysAsk=true
   NC:useSystemDefault=false

Clicking on m3u link asked about application to use, including realplayer.
Selecting this started Totem again! rrealplayer expected.

[Bug 271216] [NEW] Firefox prints one page only of long doc in a frame

2008-09-17 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

Firefox 3.01 printing: I have two frames, one containing a document that should
take many pages to print. Firefox only prints one page, losing the rest.
Typical site: http://www.cict.bhtafe.edu.au/subjects/ict321/bug.html
It also prints one page for multi-frame documents from web access to M/S
Exchange such as
http://www.cict.bhtafe.edu.au/subjects/bug/MicrosoftOutlookWebAccess.html
Another problem site is
http://septemberfestival.com.au/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=4Itemid=4
which prints three pages but still loses a lot of content

Package is Ubuntu 8.10 alpha5, but problem has occurred in many other
distros and earlier versions of firefox.

[Bug 268799] Re: Can't migrate summary to sqlite

2008-09-13 Thread Jan Newmarch
The workaround from Sebastien works okay. I'll keep running evolution
under gdb just in case anything else happens. I didn't mention that the
out-of-memory would occur after about half-hour of converting the
mailboxes. Not sure if it had reached the end of a long process
involving thousands of maiboxes or ran out before finishing converting.

[Bug 228278] Re: ClearWeather no longer retrieves forecast from weather.com

2008-07-30 Thread Jan Newmarch
Replace prod=xoap with link=xoap in
/usr/share/screenlets/ClearWeather/ClearWeather.py. I also removed the
.pyc compiled file to be sure it picked up my change. According to the
spec from weather.com that I just downloaded (weather.com-sdk.zip)
link=xoap is a required parameter to the HTTP request.

[Bug 240616] Re: exchange 2.22.1 lists libldap-2.4 as dependency but actually has libldap-2.3

2008-07-10 Thread Jan Newmarch
Not an issue after all. I had tried to build evolution from source once
and this left lots of libraries in /usr/local/lib which got picked up
during loading. One of these must have referenced libldap-2.3.so.0.
Cleaning out /usr/local/lib solved the problem.

Sorry for any inconvenience

This is related to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239052 and seems
to be the cause of (some of) the evolution-exchange problems reported
there.

[Bug 239052] Re: Upgrade to evolution 2.22.2 lost evolution-exchange

2008-06-13 Thread Jan Newmarch
More info. I now have two boot partitions, one running Ubuntu 8.0.4
freshly installed off DVD with evolution 2.22.1, the second running
Ubuntu with all updates applied at June 13, 2008 (Australian time) with
evolution 2.22.2. but evolution-exchange 2.22.1 My home directories are
all on a separate partition, with symbolic links from /home
(/home/newmarch - /mnt/sda5/newmarch). So alll config files for
~newmarch are the same across both boot options.

.gnome2_private/Evolution is now becoming a bit of a mess:

[Passwords-Mail]
imap:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Passwords-Exchange]
exchange:__J.Newmarch;[EMAIL PROTECTED]
exchange:__J.Newmarch;[EMAIL PROTECTED]
exchange:__J.Newmarch;[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The exchange account works fine on evoluton 2.22.1 from original Ubuntu
8.0.4 DVD distro.

With the upgrades to 2.22.2 and with the bodgy links from 2.4 to 2.3
dlls it shows me my exchange account and lets me edit the
preferences-exchange account. But all that I am seeing in the folders
list is the exchange directory folder with no contents. When I click on
it a fast message says scanning??? (too fast to see what is going
on). No content shows in the folder after this scan.

My imap connections are working okay now (duh! I had to set evolution
online).

So I am only having problems with 2.22.2 connecting to an exchange
server.

[Bug 239052] Re: Upgrade to evolution 2.22.2 lost evolution-exchange

2008-06-11 Thread Jan Newmarch
Listing in Synaptic package manager:
evolution-exchange2.22.1-0ubunt1 2.22.1-0ubunt1

Using Synaptic package manager to reinstall evolution-exchange resulted in the
following details trace:
[Reading database ... 117660 files and directories currently installed]
Preparing to replace evolution-exchange 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 (using
.../evolution-exchange_2.22.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
  Unpacking replacement evolution-exchange ...
  Setting up evolution-exchange (2.22.1-0ubuntu1) ...

After that, running evolution from the command line gave the same error:
 Could not load
/usr/lib/evolution-data-server-1.2/camel-providers/libcamelexchange.so:
libldap-2.3.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Now the odd bit: ldd gave
$ldd /usr/lib/evolution-data-server-1.2/camel-providers/libcamelexchange.so |
grep libldap
libldap_r-2.4.so.2 = /usr/lib/libldap_r-2.4.so.2 (0xb7f7d000)
libldap-2.3.so.0 = not found

2.3 and 2.4??? I'm not sure what that means!
libldap_r-2.4.so.2 = /usr/lib/libldap_r-2.4.so.2 (0xb7ecf000)
libldap-2.3.so.0 = not found

[Bug 239052] Re: Upgrade to evolution 2.22.2 lost evolution-exchange

2008-06-11 Thread Jan Newmarch
I know I shouldn't do this, but just to see what happened...

   ln -s libldap-2.4.so.2 libldap-2.3.so.0
   ln -s liblber-2.4.so.2 liblber.2.3.so.0

(both needed)

Now I can see that I have an exchange account, and even try to connect
to it. Connection fails (but now so does evolution 2.22.2 connecting to
my IMAP server while thunderbird succeeds) but it is a step in the right
direction, even if the means are wrong. But it would be nice to figure
out what is going wrong with the shared libraries before moving on to
the next issue...

[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume hibernate/resume cycle

2008-06-10 Thread Jan Newmarch
More info for the last post: if I call pm-suspend directly and close and
open the lid, then it all works fine. Keyboard is activated on resume.
So it appears that gnome-power-manager is doing something to break the
keyboard. When I had Fedora Core 9 running, Gnome had the same problem,
but KDE was okay.

[Bug 239052] [NEW] Upgrade to evolution 2.22.2 lost evolution-exchange

2008-06-10 Thread Jan Newmarch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Automatic package upgrade installed exchange 2.22.2 from 2.22.1
yesterday. But it didn't upgrade evolution-exchange from 2.22.1 to
2.22.2. Evolution now has no means of connecting to an exchange server
and I can't find a 2.22.2 compiled package.

lsb_release -rd: Description: Ubuntu 8.04

[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume hibernate/resume cycle

2008-06-09 Thread Jan Newmarch
Still occurs in Hardy release 8.04 on a Dell Latitude D830. The
bind/unbind fix doesn't work for me: no such device when I try to write
to the bind file. Symptoms as everyone describes: on resume after
suspend to disk the laptop keyboard doesn't work but an external USB
keyboard does. xev reports no keyboard events. Requires a reboot to
regain keyboard.

Kernel is Linux 2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP Wed May 28 20:27:26 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux.
