[Bug 1742502] Re: 108 and 109 kernel hangs

2018-02-14 Thread Joey Stanford
Joe,

116 puts VMWARE into a loop. It forces a hard reboot somewhere during
the init process (scrolls by too fast). If I had NOPTI it boots
normally. So I would say, no, 116 does not fix this.

112 kernel has the same issue. Adding nopti allows it to boot.
What's different: It stops after zswap loading.

[Bug 1742502] [NEW] 108 and 109 kernel hangs

2018-01-10 Thread Joey Stanford
Public bug reported:

Overnight I had 2 of 12 16.04 servers brick with the 108 kernel. They
also do not work with 109. They work fine with 104. The other 10 worked
fine on both 108 and 109.

All are hosted on VMWARE. The two broken ones stop at the same place. I
was able to go back to the 104 kernel to get them working and pin the
kernel version.

Just for fun, I set zswap.enabled=0 and they both crashed with kthread
starved for jiffies. They are both multi-processor with lots of ram and
disk.

I have a task from the Ubuntu Kernel team to try this with 'nopti'. I'll
report back.

[Bug 1434556] Re: tls in ubuntu-push client doesn't support certs with 384/512 signatures...

2015-04-13 Thread Joey Stanford
fwiw, we've had to stop issuing SHA-512 certs for fear that it will
affect users. We do have some 512s that are out there yet. I'd like to
resume issuing 512s instead of 256 as soon as you believe the fix has
been populated out to the user base. At that time we'll start to re-
issue our 256s as 512s when they expire.

Our normal process is to choose a security stance that allows for the
widest amount of access using protocols that are still considered
secure. In this specific case, the algorithms to support 512 are
(usually) part of the 256 set but yet provide a slightly better security
posture and have slightly better hashing performance over 256. SHA-2 has
been out since 2001 and I believe it's penetration is sufficient at this
point for us to legitimately use it without any ill effects.

I suspect this may also be a dup of open bug #666286 and open bug

I found these after I had this same crash today. I can force Mutt to
crash via a different mechanism though, via a notmuch-mutt call and
doing a search for a popular word.

Sorry for the spam but I'm diagnosing this between desktop crashes.

Another piece from unity --debug...

Despite having an Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT (driver 304.51) I see that
unity is claiming I'm unsuported and forcing me to opengl.

I then get an error of

/usr/bin/compiz (opengl) - Error: FBO is incomplete:
GL::FRAMEBUFFER_UNSUPPORTED (0x8cdd)

I'm using the default (auto) kernel FB and I can run other desktops just
fine. Nvidia settings doesn't seem to have a problem.

I've done:
* unity --distro
* unity --reset-icons
* used jocket-text to list and purge all active NVIDIA drivers
* used apt-get to purge any lingering NVIDIA items

2012-10-17 Thread Joey Stanford
some updates...

I've attached two valgrind logs. The problem I had though was gnome-
session was grabbing compiz.bin and executing directly when the crashes
occurred so the valgrind logs I do have don't cover that exact case.
However, they do show a bunch of errors.

I took a video of what's happening currently:
http://socialcam.com/v/SC5Pte9r?type=email

Now I need to figure out how to stop gnome-session from directly
executing compiz.bin (which is compiz just renamed because compiz is now
a shell script wrapper for valgrind).

2012-10-17 Thread Joey Stanford
I restarted this with valgrind again and I can't get it crash when it's
called from valgrind. As soon as I put the original compiz back it
causes a freeze (which is not in the video). I did get two more grinds
out of though in case they are of any help.

2012-10-17 Thread Joey Stanford
fwiw, after the valgrind experiment I had to include another line item
to my workaround... normally removing .compiz and .cache/compiz and
restarting lightdm works. I added the compiz.desktop to keep it from
picking up the test script I was using.

#!/bin/sh
sudo service lightdm stop
rm -rf /home/joey/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/joey/.cache/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/joey/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/compiz.desktop
sudo service lightdm start

2012-10-03 Thread Joey Stanford
Apparently this is still happening to many people (including myself) and
I'm getting pings and emails about the work-around that I've discovered.
This is the script that I use. Don't trust me... research this
yourself.

1) I login at lightdm and verify that launching anything from Unity causes a
hang/crash/freeze.
2) I control-alt 1 to a console terminal and login
3) I run this script (replace me with your login name. I've called it
fixcompiz.sh

#!/bin/sh
sudo service lightdm stop
rm -rf /home/me/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/me/.cache/.compiz*
sudo service lightdm start

4) when lightdm starts it forces me over to console 7 where I can just
login and continue on my happy way with a working system.

I have to perform the above 4 steps on my two nvidia machines on every
boot.

Further to my comment #17:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/750386/comments/17

I found that the as of Beta 2 that trick by itself doesn't work any
longer. I have to rm -rf /home/me/.cache/compiz* and restart lightdm
to get it to work. It's a reliable (for me) fix such that I created a
bash script to do it and it works for me all the time.

[Bug 1005832] Re: Intel wifi frequent disconnects

2012-05-29 Thread Joey Stanford
I ack the roaming by Seth. We have multiple 802.11n APs with the same
SSID here that are WPA2 encrypted but on different channels. Those
affected go into a roam loop. When they connect to a non-WPA2 single
SSID AP they have no problem. I've seen this on three different Intel
setups across multiple brands (so it's not just a thinkpad thing).

It's also worth nothing that it is happening on several non-US laptops
as well. We do have APs in use on channel 1, 6, and 11. To test Andy's
theory we moved the 11s to 10. However the hotel's wireless has APs up
to 13. The APs for reference are a mix of enGenius and Ruckus. In one
test area I removed the enGenius and it actually caused more laptops to
go into the roaming loop because there more APs of roughly the same
signal strenth (as measured via wpa_gui) to choose from.

I didn't save the wireshark capture but if you'd like to see that I'll
do another one tomorrow if we have any affected.

[Bug 1005832] Re: Intel wifi frequent disconnects

2012-05-29 Thread Joey Stanford
Hi,

@Matthieu Yes I completely forgot there is one Debian laptop here that
is affected. Also the problems exhibiting here appear to mostly be
reason code 2 and 3. On most of the reason code 2s killing
wpa_supplicant was work-around. If we have the issue again today I'll
get a few folks to add the wpa debug to the bug.

@Seth So far it's 100% Intel boards. I haven't seen any realtek boards
affected yet. However I need to check because I heard mention just as
we were shutting down that it may also be affecting two of the Linaro
dev boards from different manufacturers. I'll circle with Matt W. when
we start in 3 hours and then update the bug.

[Bug 711008] Re: sound not playing on overo

2011-02-07 Thread Joey Stanford
Hi,

I've tested this now with a different analog headset and also with a
logitech USB headset (to demonstrate that it's not a failed tobi board).
All instances it looks like sound is being played but nothing is heard.
I've ensured alsamixer is set correctly.

I tested the speaker on my workstation with the same command and it
works fine. I unplugged the speaker and put it into the mic jack just
to see if that would work on the tobi but no luck. I suppose it's
possible I have a bad tobi.

[Bug 711008] [NEW] sound not playing on overo

2011-01-31 Thread Joey Stanford
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have the gumistix overo tide with tobi board. It currently doesn't
produce sound via the headset jack. I've reset alsamix to ensure it's
ok, check the jack connection and so on to no avail. I see no errors in
syslog to account for this. In fact everything says it should work.

Re: [Bug 706033] Re: USB keyboard and mouse not working on overo

2011-01-26 Thread Joey Stanford
I did this and got the keyboard mostly working. ie - it only works if
its plugged in at start-up. It doesn't seem to enumerate if you plug in
the keyboard once the system is up.

Oh thanks! I'll give it a try.

My guess is that it's pulling in the firewire stack which has been
busted for the last 3 years. In fact it's quite similar to bug #657081 except
that this is a USB drive.
