[Bug 1871420] Re: vlc keeps forgetting volume. Starts at 0%

2024-06-24 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Don't bother reporting upstream. VLC is not responsible for restoring
volume, PulseAudio (or WirePlumber) is. And if it does not work, then
that is most likely a problem with the system configuration, and most
certainly not with upstream VLC.

[Bug 1964664] Re: libsndio7.0 : Breaks: libsndio7.1 (<= 1.8.1-1~exp2) but 1.8.1-1~exp2 is to be installed

2022-03-13 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
It is anyway silly for VLC to feature the sndio support on Linux. (I
happen to have written the VLC sndio plugin, and I'd argue that) sndio
is inferior in every possible ways to ALSA or PulseAudio, and should
only be used where needed, meaning mostly OpenBSD.

AFAICT, it is built because VLC depends on libfluidsynth-dev, which
depends on SDL, which somehow depends on libsndio-dev (probably for bad
reasons).

[Bug 1579640] Re: IPv6 nameservers not removed from /etc/resolv.conf when switching to a IPv4 network

2020-06-27 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
rdnssd simply tracks the kernel notion's of what are the RDNSS at a
time. The kernel did not send expiration for the entries when you left
the network, hence the entries are considered still valid.

What you want is an integrated IPv4/IPv6 connection manager, like e..
network-manager. This is way out of scope of rdnssd.

It's a bit confusing because libvdpau defaults to the NVIDIA driver,

[Bug 1572137] Re: Passing radio stream web address fails

Note that you can still access the stream with VLC if you skip the M3U step:
vlc http://stream.srg-ssr.ch/m/rsc_fr/mp3_128

(but likely the server admin will block it when they find out)

[Bug 1546078] Re: ffmpeg outdated: please upgrade to 3.0

2016-04-18 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
It's not really fixed in Debian. VLC just embeds its own older FFmpeg
version, so that the rest of Debian can upgrade.

There are no volunteers to add support for FFmpeg 3.0 into VLC 2.2; that
is potentially quite a lot of work.

[Bug 1512993] Re: VLC exhibits blockiness on h264 seeking

2016-03-14 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
VLC 2.2.2 exhibits a known bug with VDPAU-VA-GL. Update to VLC 2.2.3 (or
Debian's 2.2.2-5) if you use the later.

That being noted, if your problem exists with MPV, then that is some
other bug. Something is wrong either in VAAPI hardware drivers, or in
VDPAU-VA-GL. Please reassign.

[Bug 1541269] Re: Setting volume limit for Qt interface does not work completely

2016-02-12 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
The Qt volume limit is for the Qt volume widget only. This is working as
it's supposed to.

While it is debatable if the mouse wheel should obey the limit (it is
not part of the VLC Qt plugin), VLC cannot enforce volume limits system-
wide. PulseAudio is responsible for that, and does not care about VLC
limits.

[Bug 1502115] Re: vlc process never returns after opening a video file on unreachable nfs mount

2015-10-02 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
This is a generic limitation of the Linux kernel virtual file system and
the NFS driver. There is nothing VLC can do about, since it gets stuck
in kernel mode: you just have to kill the correct VLC process (by PID).

Consider yourself lucky. Back in the days, you could not even kill the
process in such circumstance.

[Bug 1440254] Re: Recent update broke XVideo/XCB output for h264

2015-04-14 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
tl;dr: You cannot use XVideo output via VDPAU decoder.

If you want to use the VDPAU decoder, you really really should use the
VDPAU output (or leave output to auto). Otherwise, use OpenGL. XVideo
cannot handle picture buffer padding and subpicture blending and is
generally considered deprecated by Xorg developers.

Alternatively, disable VDPAU decoding.

Sorry but this is wontfix as far as I am concerned.

[Bug 1413785] Re: vlc spuriously jumps ahead to next item in playlist

2015-01-23 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
This is not making much sense. The content of the playlist has no
effects on the current playing item. If the current item fails and
terminates for any reason, the next item will be played. If there are no
next item, either the first item will be played from start, or playback
will just stop.

So comment 2 is really not making sense, and without verbose logs, I
have to very strongly suspect user error.

[Bug 1011194] Re: vlc stops playing video, ui reacts but closing not possible

2014-12-19 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
The stack trace would be more readable with the libdbus debug symbols.
In any case, it seems that VLC is stuck waiting for your desktop inhibit
service to respond to a screensaver inhibit request. This prevents the
video output thread from terminating, which then prevents the playlist
from moving on and the UI from exiting.

From my point of view, that is a bug in your desktop environment, or
whatever components provides the screen-saver inhibition D-Bus API
(can't say which without VLC logs).

You are missing the point: the problem is with the symbols, not the
library name. You cannot have two libraries with the same symbols in the
same process - in this case the VLC process. So either x264 should be
linked statically; I believe this is what upstream recommends. Or some
trick is necessary to change the names of symbols.

[Bug 1391837] Re: Blocky video with some files

2014-11-23 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont

blockiness is to be expected if your hardware is too low-end, or your
drivers suck.

** Changed in: vlc (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid
