[Bug 1796140] Re: Printers are added automatically, even after they are deleted

2020-04-27 Thread Ramon Rocha
Same happens to me plus that I want to install a local(USB) printer but ubuntu
only shows network printers which are added automatically and doesn't show usb
printers connected locally..
Ubuntu use to be very good before with printing. but it's all messed up since
the last 3 upgrades I'm having this same problem wich doesn't seem to be given
attention.

I tried all fixes found online and none of them worked for me, enven
disabling avahi completely but the USB printers doesn't show up either.

this it was said this should be a feature we turn on/off and not a
setting that can't be resolved.

[Bug 536832] [NEW] Setting compose key as 'right CTRL' traps cursor in VirtualBox

2010-03-10 Thread Ramon Rocha
Public bug reported:

This is probably filed against the wrong package but I don't know which
one is correct.

When I set the compose key to 'right CTRL' using gnome-keyboard-

2010-02-25 Thread Ramon Rocha
Federico, you're English was correct. My interpretation of Manual
Install for this test scenario was...

1. Go to nvidia's website
2. Download their installation script for Linux graphics drivers
3. Stop X/gdm
4. Run their script

The expected results as defined in the test case did not match the
actual results.

I also encountered this bug in Lucid. It appears to consistently happen
for me when hitting the number 2 key on the keyboard.

Moreover, when two monitors are connected, instead of my session ending
and getting returned to the login screen, both of my monitors shutoff
and the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

Martin, before doing the logout/login workaround, do you see graphical
corruption at the top of your screen that gets worse the more you type?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/459606 was
affecting my tests results. The scripts to record audio were not
actually being executed. The scripts run now, but they never end.

The activity bar appears, the temporary directory and wave file are
created, but the bar never goes away and the sound does not play. I
have to manually kill the gts process to make checkbox responsive again.

[Bug 424139] [NEW] drag and drop from banshee to brasero causes segmentation fault

2009-09-03 Thread Ramon Rocha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

On Ubuntu 9.04 while making a standard audio CD, I dragged and dropped a
song from my Music Library in Banshee to the Audio Disc Project window
in Brasero hoping it would add it to the project like Rhythmbox does.
Instead Brasero crashed with a segmentation fault (visible in terminal).

Ideally it should not crash and the song should be added to the Brasero
project, but if it does crash it would be nice if the project would not
be lost. Maybe this could be accomplished by saving to a temporary file
after the addition of each song. It is annoying to get halfway through
creating an audio CD and lose your work because of a bug.

[Bug 273142] Re: screensaver won't release with mouse movement

2009-07-28 Thread Ramon Rocha
Awe, oh well.

I'm not sure I am convinced it is hardware specific. People with
nvidia, ati, and intel drivers have all reported it in the comments.

I just did a quick test because it used to happen on my machine but
doesn't anymore. However, it's one of the first things my wife ran into
on the machine I recently built her. SpirographX seems to correctly
respond to mouse movement. The screensaver Pacman does not. Make sure
you wait for the screensaver to run for a little bit because if you move
it soon it will work correctly.

[Bug 273142] Re: screensaver won't release with mouse movement

2009-07-28 Thread Ramon Rocha
...how long to wait for the bug to arise?

I did not measure it, but about a minute seems to consistently reproduce
the behavior for me using Pacman which, as you stated, is not a default
screensaver.

Regarding the hardware, could it be related to using a USB mouse vs. a
PS/2 mouse? I am using a USB mouse but I would think that would be
abstracted to the screensaver.

Unfortunately I do not have a test machine available at the moment, so I
cannot help test in Karmic. Thanks for looking into this for being a
papercut, mac_v. If you cannot easily reproduce it, it would seem it is
not a papercut.

[Bug 253504] Re: adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2009-05-12 Thread Ramon Rocha
Hello,

The old server I originally encountered this issue finally succumbed to
age and is no more. Since then, I have built a new server. I tried to
reproduce this issue on both my desktop and my server.

The desktop is running a fresh install of 9.04 and I am not able to
reproduce the issue there. The sudo process does not even appear in top
or in gnome system monitor which is not the expected behavior (but is
desirable I suppose). The desktop does not lock up. This is the same
behavior I had on my desktop originally.

Very surprisingly though, (or maybe not) I am still able to reproduce
the issue on my server which is running Ubuntu Server 9.04 64-bit with X
and gnome installed. The original problem was also on the server
version of Ubuntu. Maybe that is why people recommend not running X on
a server? :)

It's a little different now in that I am able to switch to a VT via
CTRL+ALT+Fn, login, kill the process, etc. whereas before this did not
work. Other than that, the session is frozen just like before.

[Bug 32178] Re: Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions.

2009-01-27 Thread Ramon Rocha
It didn't really make sense to me either but it did work. I had tried
restarting the installation 3 or 4 times before I changed the mount
point. The moment it was not top-level it worked. Maybe it was a
coincidence though. Only the NTFS partition was affected by this
behavior.

This is not same Ubuntu forum post that led me to the workaround (I
looked but could not find it) but I believe it describes the same
problem and solution:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=596682

While looking for the original post, I also found some other people
perhaps having the same issue. Maybe they could be asked to try the
workaround to see if it makes a difference.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=801398

[Bug 306599] [NEW] mp3 file converted to wav format produces garbled output

Using Ubuntu 8.10, any mp3 file I convert to wav format using
soundconverter 1.3.2 produces an audio file with many artifacts. The
file will play but does not sound good. Instead of sounding like the

[Bug 291861] Re: No sound when using Flash player (i.e. youtube.com, jamendo.com)

2008-11-06 Thread Ramon Rocha
Alright, I'm back. I had to reinstall 8.10.

Before I reinstalled: I disabled the PPAs, downgraded the packages,
added the crimsun PPA, upgraded, no change. Removed the PPA and
downgraded again. Added the themuso PPA, upgraded, no change.
Rebooted. Then I couldn't login. I do not recall the exact error
message (I should have written it down) but it was something about being
unable to find a file related to pulseaudio.

So, now I'm on a fresh install of 8.10. At first, I had no sound at
all. Changed from AutoDetect to Audigy 1...(ALSA) and I also had to
uncheck the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack switch in the volume
control. Now I have sound...except in flash.

Sigh :) I haven't had this many problems using Linux since back when I
was on SUSE 9 in my college days!

I'm open to suggestions here, otherwise I'll revert back to 8.04. Heck,
even running Firefox through wine did not fix the issue!

Frédéric, thanks for the tip and fast response. Based on my googling,
this package is no longer necessary with 8.10. See this bug:

Since I used the Update Manager to upgrade to 8.10 I am guessing it
removed that package automatically.

I will make sure I have libasound2-plugins installed as referenced by
the bug above. If I do I guess I will try to find a deb for
libflashsupport from somewhere and see if that resolves the issue.

[Bug 291861] Re: No sound when using Flash player (i.e. youtube.com, jamendo.com)

2008-11-03 Thread Ramon Rocha
I have libasound2-plugins already installed. I tried reinstalling and
rebooting but had the same behavior.

I tried an old deb of libflashsupport I found from here:
http://www.derekhildreth.com/blog/how-to-fix-the-no-sound-issue-in-
firefox-flash/ which I got from a Ubuntu forums post
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=966630highlight=flash+sound

Others in that thread seemed to have the same problem and the
libflashsupport package fixed the issue for them so I was hopeful.
However, after I installed it, youtube told me I had an old version of
the flash player and would not play videos.

I then tried installing the adobe-flashplugin deb directly from Adobe
and had the same result as I had with libflashsupport. The update
manager wanted to update that package, adobe-flashplugin, so I did.
The video played but still no sound.

Finally, I tried flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound...same result: video
with no sound.

Between each step I uninstalled whatever I had just installed and
restarted my browser completely.

Is there any information, such as log files I could provide that would
be of use? Did I maybe miss a step in the other packages I tried?

[Bug 291861] [NEW] No sound when using Flash player (i.e. youtube.com, jamendo.com)

2008-10-31 Thread Ramon Rocha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I upgraded from 8.04 and lost my audio capabilities. Going to System
Preferences Sound and changing the Playback from ALSA to my specific
card (Audigy 1 [SB0090]...(ALSA)) restored my ability to play songs
through Rhythm Box or Totem and the ability to hear sound notifications,
but flash videos still have no sound. Before the upgrade, everything
was working correctly.

I have also tried using gnash and swfdec but both fail to play flash
videos from youtube.com completely. I have tried reinstalling
flashplugin-nonfree but the results are unchanged.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Starting with 8.04 and Audigy 1 series sound card, change sound
playback from AutoDetect to ALSA. Now you have sound.

2) Upgrade to 8.10

3) After the upgrade, audio playback will not work, change sound
playback from ALSA to Audigy...(ALSA).

4) Some audio now works but flash still has no audio.

[Bug 256785] Re: computer locks up when I select screen saver

2008-10-22 Thread Ramon Rocha
I've also encountered a lockup when selecting a screen saver on Ubuntu
8.04. The mouse still moves around but I cannot click on anything. I
am unable to switch to a VT or kill X via CTRL+ALT+Backspace but I can
ssh in.

When the machine is frozen, I can ssh into it from another computer and
top reports that the compiz.real and Xorg processes are occupying almost
100% of my CPUs. The braid process is also using a small amount.
Killing the Xorg process dumps me back to the gdm login screen and all
is well again.

Selecting braid or xrayswarm seem to consistently lock up the
application for me. I am using the nvidia driver.

2008-10-22 Thread Ramon Rocha
bluespell, can you try something?

I clicked on a different screen saver after my computer locked up.
Nothing appeared to happen but after about 10 or 15 minutes, it became
responsive again.

It appears that instead of locking up, it was just running really really
slow. Do you get the same behavior?

[Bug 253504] Re: adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2008-10-11 Thread Ramon Rocha
I tried it on a different computer running 8.04.1 Desktop (as opposed to
8.04.1 Server with X and Gnome installed). I was unable to reproduce
the issue. The launcher did not open the application and I also saw
that sudo was not even running after clicking the launcher. However,
the machine did not lock up. Is this the expected behavior?

On the original computer having the problem, I get the issue every time
assuming the sudo ticket is not already available. I am unable to
switch to a VT after getting the bug. I must SSH to the machine and
kill the rogue processes.

Maybe it's a video card driver issue? The computer where I am able to
reproduce the issue has a ATI Radeon 9600 XT and the one that is not
having the issue is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS.

[Bug 253504] Re: adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2008-07-31 Thread Ramon Rocha
Thanks for the fast response, Sebastien. The cursor was not stuck, it
remained an arrow. However, the default animation that plays when
clicking a launcher (icon gets bigger and bigger while fades) was stuck.
The icon appeared large and transparent when the screen froze and the
keyboard became unresponsive.

I looked in /var/log/messages and only saw entries for when I pushed
buttons on my KMV switch (for disconnecting and connecting USB devices).
/var/log/syslog only had some info about cron jobs which I did not
create so they must be setup default.

If the mouse was still moving, but the keyboard and screen were not
working, could it be a bug in X or compiz? I will try to reproduce the
issue and report back.

[Bug 253504] Re: adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2008-07-31 Thread Ramon Rocha
I was able to reproduce the issue by adding sudo before my gnome-
terminal launcher as well. I was actually hoping I would not be able
to reproduce the issue :) The animation did not get stuck this time but
the keyboard became unresponsive again.

When I SSHed into the machine the sudo process was occupying 100% of the
CPU according to top. I wasn't expecting that. Killing the sudo
process did not make the keyboard start working again. I had to kill
xinit at which point I plopped back to a terminal and everything was
fine again. Second time I tried it, I killed sudo, killed xinit and all
the gnome panels and desktop icons disappeared but I could still see my
desktop background image. At this point CTRL+ALT+Backspace worked and I
was back the terminal.

This seems strange. The only thing I have noticed in the logs that
seems out of the ordinary was this line in syslog which appears after I
type startx:

Jul 31 22:41:25 machine_name console-kit-daemon[6278]: WARNING: Unable
to activate console: No such device or address

Maybe that is normal. Anything else I could try?

[Bug 253504] Re: adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2008-07-31 Thread Ramon Rocha
Well, I saw the notification in the panel that some updates were
available. I noticed one of them was for gnome-panel (and other
packages). I thought why not? and installed them. I then tried to
reproduce the issue.

Having a sudo before the command in a launcher is no longer locking up
the X session! Instead, it opens the tool with root access. I was
surprised. However, it never prompted me for a password. Is this
because I had already specified it when I ran the Update Manager tool?

I tried logging out and back in to see if that would reset it, but I
still was not prompted by the launcher. However, attempting to execute
the same command from the terminal did prompt me to enter my password.

I was able to execute sudo gnome-terminal from a launcher on my panel,
it opened a terminal with root@machine name and I indeed had root
access (tried to write some files in other users' home directories).

I am completely confused now. Is this the expected behavior? Should
the user not be prompted for a password when running a command prefixed
by sudo from a launcher in a panel or is this working by chance because
I performed a system update right before the test?

[Bug 253504] [NEW] adding sudo before command in launcher in gnome panel freezes X session

2008-07-30 Thread Ramon Rocha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I am using 8.04.1 Server with X and gnome installed.

I have a launcher on one of my gnome panels for gnome-system-monitor.
I wanted to run it with root privileges so I added sudo before the
command (I did not know I should have been using gksudo). When I
clicked the launcher, my entire X session froze and was not responsive
to the keyboard.

I was unable to switch to another terminal via CTRL+ALT+Fn or kill X via
CTRL+ALT+Backspace so I had to ssh in from another machine and kill X
and that bash session after which the affected machine became responsive
to the keyboard again. I was also able to startx again with no
problem.

I have not tried to reproduce the issue for fear having to reboot the
machine (it is old hardware and sometimes takes a while for the BIOS to
pass the POST). I can try though if required for gathering logs, etc.

I would not expect a launcher for sudo gnome-system-monitor to work as
gksudo gnome-system-monitor, but it should not freeze the system. If
I did not have another computer I would have had to reboot.

Let me know if more information is required.

Hello,

I also experience this bug and found a work-around on the ubuntu forums.
If you try to mount it as a top-level location, it will not work.
However, mounting under another existing location worked.

For example:

setting mount to /windows did not work but setting mount to
/media/windows did work.

[Bug 154596] Re: No window decorations using compiz fusion after creating new user

2007-11-06 Thread Ramon Rocha
ilikeyoureyes, the screenshot is not the same issue I am experiencing.
In my case, there are no window decorations at all (not even a blank
border). I have done some more testing and it appears that the issue is
not actually related to creating a new user as I originally thought but
is actually triggered by changing resolutions.

I reinstalled to try and reproduce the scenario but I could not at
first. Then I changed the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768 and my
window decorations disappeared. I now recall that I did this in my
original install as well. I must have done it at some point that made
it seem like adding the new user caused the problem.

Has anyone else changed the default resolution either before or after
enabling visual effects?

[Bug 154596] No window decorations using compiz fusion after creating new user

2007-10-19 Thread Ramon Rocha
Public bug reported:

I performed a clean install of Ubuntu 7.10.

I added a new user with non-administrator privileges, but I remained
logged in as an admin user.

I enabled restricted drivers for my NVIDIA video card and restarted the
computer. The video card is a GeForce4.

I logged in using the same account created during installation of the OS
(not the new one created) and enabled Normal Visual Effects using the
Appearance Preferences tool. At this point everything was working
correctly and looked very nice.

I logged out of the admin account and logged in as a non-admin user. I
noticed that any windows I opened were missing the Title bar and the
min/max/close buttons and could not be moved. I logged out of the non-
admin account and back into the admin account. The window decorations
were no longer appearing there either.

The window decorations were restored upon selecting None in the Visual
Effects tab of the Appearance Preferences tool, but of course this
disabled all visual effects. Trying to reapply Normal Visual Effects
once again remove the window decorations.
