Re: [Bug 1318868] Re: menulibre and alacarte crashes after menu edit

2014-05-13 Thread Rob Ward
Hi Sean,

Here is the terminal interaction on my machine at the moment.

rob@DesktopUbuntu:~$ alacarte

(alacarte:5724): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_label_set_accel_closure:
assertion 'gtk_accel_group_from_accel_closure (accel_closure) != NULL'
failed

(alacarte:5724): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_label_set_accel_closure:
assertion 'gtk_accel_group_from_accel_closure (accel_closure) != NULL'
failed
rob@DesktopUbuntu:~$
rob@DesktopUbuntu:~$
rob@DesktopUbuntu:~$ menulibre

(menulibre:5733): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_model_get_iter: assertion
'path-depth 0' failed

(menulibre:5733): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_model_get_iter: assertion
'path-depth 0' failed
rob@DesktopUbuntu:~$

However both Main Menu and Menu Editor are running and allowing edits,
so this does not reflect the situation where they don't cooperate.

Would you like me to try to replicate the error and repeat the above
(assuming I can of course)?

I have attached the current /home/.config/menus/ as an archive file
menus0 (which I think is an empty folder), plus the older one that I
had to delete (ie cut and paste elsewhere) menus1. It has preserved a
file called xfce-applications.menu which was present when it was
crashing, and a sub folder gnome-applications-merged and
applications-merged that contain the same named file
xfce-applications.menu that previously allowed the programs to work.
I may be jumping the gun here, but I am hoping these extra observations
may help.

[Bug 1295031] Re: Please remove likewise-open from trusty

2014-05-13 Thread Rob A
Likewise Open was purchased in 2012 by BeyondTrust software and renamed
to PowerBroker Identity Services Open: http://www.powerbrokeropen.org/

This project does support Ubuntu. There is a hidden --oem oem1 build
switch that looks to use Ubuntu-preferred paths, instead of /opt/pbis.
This should be investigated as a replacement.

Re: Trouble finding drives in Ubuntu-Gnome

2014-05-12 Thread Rob Whyte
Hi,
in Nautilus files when in your home folder shift tab a couple of times
to the bookmarks, computer and available file systems.
Hope that is helpful, otherwise there is a gnome extension called
removal drives which is pretty good.

Cheers

 Hi,

I am running Ubuntu Gnome live 14.04, and I am trying to display computer,
so I can copy a folder from /dev/sda1.

I went into terminal and ran:

 Sudo mount -a

 And this does not help.

I am having difficulty finding places or computer.

I searched for both gnome and unity keyboard shortcuts, but nothing there
 displays drives.

I did find files, and when I go into that, it shows my home folder, and I
tried a backspace, to backup into drives, and nothing was there.

I looked in / and looked in mnt and media and no luck there either.

Hopefully someone can help finding drives.

 Thanks for any help.

[Bug 1318868] [NEW] menulibre and alacarte crashes after menu edit

2014-05-12 Thread Rob Ward
Public bug reported:

After using alacarte to add a new menu entry, both menulibre and
alacarte do not run. menulibre draws a window outline and disappears.
alacarte simply thrashes the hard drive and nothing appears. Removing
/home/.config/menus/ allows them to work again.

I was not sure whether to attach the alacarte or menulibre system information,
sorry if I have got the wrong one, I can forward the alacarte if requested. I
have saved a copy of the menus folder which I can forward as well.
During all this time the Applications Menu and Whiskers menu worked fine in the
Panel and retained their menu entries and structure.

I maybe at fault in how I used the Menu editing programs (my stats will
show I have only had the system up and running for 4 weeks,
status==newbie) or it maybe a bug. Since the first time the menu
editing crashed, and I recovered it, I have successfully added extra
items to the menu, but I have also had it crash twice since then as
well. Each time deleting that .config/menus/ folder got it working
again and stable as long as I was modest in what I attempted.

The last time it crashed I was trying to add an Icon to a menu entry
that did not get an Icon when it was installed.

/home/rob/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu is quite short about
400+bytes and when it crashes there is a file about 16kbytes long (this
file contains a whole list what looks like every possible menu item,
visible and invisible, in the machine, the short file version only
contains information relevant to the last icon created).

[Bug 1317949] [NEW] Unable to see secondary groups in `id` listing

2014-05-09 Thread Rob McCorkell
Public bug reported:

When using SSSD 1.11.5 on Ubuntu 14.04, configured with the LDAP
backend, running `id username` only shows the primary group, along
with any secondary group that has been pre-cached (for example by
running `getent group group` beforehand). After the user details have
been seen by SSSD, they remain without showing secondary groups even if
the groups are queried with `getent`.

With SSSD 1.9.5 (from a PPA on Ubuntu 12.04) secondary groups are shown
just fine with `id`.

I am using the LDAP backend to point at a Samba 4 server running as an
Active Directory domain controller. My sssd.conf is attached.

[Bug 1314739] Re: Unable to upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-05-04 Thread Rob Hills
Many thanks Brian for pointing this out. For anyone else who finds this
via a search engine, I fixed my problem with the help of some
information from http://askubuntu.com/questions/202730/how-to-fix-the-
unable-to-calculate-upgrade-issue-when-upgrading-from-12-04-to.
Specifically I executed:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-*

to remove an XVideo driver that was blocking my upgrade. After this I
was able to complete a successful upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04

[Bug 1315575] [NEW] poor wireless connection with current kernel

2014-05-02 Thread rob loranger
Public bug reported:

The new 3.13 kernel that came with kubuntu 14.04 creates some kind of
issue with my internet connection. I get severe lag and stalled
connections. I mostly noticed playing online games but also see package
d/l progress pause/freeze during apt upgrades and sometimes my browser
will not connect. The same day I upgraded there were no issues at all,
now they are there. I found out it must be the kernel as i am currently
using 3.11.0-19 and the issues have vanished.

Please let me know what other info to provide.

[Bug 1314739] [NEW] Unable to upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-30 Thread Rob Hills
Public bug reported:

When I execute:
sudo do-release-upgrade

in the terminal, it gets to the point where it says:

  Calculating the changes

and then says:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

As none of the above applies, I'm mystified as to why this is happening.

[Bug 1314739] Re: Unable to upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-30 Thread Rob Hills
I just noticed that the debugging info above suggests I updated to Saucy
yesterday. This is incorrect. Looking at my apt logs, I have installed
Saucy back in October 2013.

In case it is relevant, I have changed computers since. My current
spindle (an SSD) was in my old notebook computer which developed
intermittent hardware faults so I purchased a new notebook in March this
year and simply moved the SSD into the new notebook. Perhaps this (or
the intermittent hardware faults) have contributed to/caused my current
upgrade problem?

[Bug 1314844] Re: On Disk Help Documents Don't Show in Octave GUI

2014-04-30 Thread Rob Frohne
Hi Mike,

Those reports are correct. I guess I need to subscribe to that bug.
What happens for me is that Octave GUI grays out and then it finally
times out somehow, but then there are no links shown. Restarting it
brings you back to the list of links, but it happens again if you click
the link (at least the first one on the list). This happens if you have
octave-doc and octave-htmldoc installed or not.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Netflix on Ubuntu Studio 14.04

2014-04-29 Thread Rob
On 04/29/2014 01:14 PM, Israel wrote:
Another thing of note, Netflix has recently said they are working on an
HTML5 version of the site to run on all devices. Currently it only runs
on the Windows Phone, but they are working to make it work on all
devices. So soon (hopefully) they will finally drop Silverlight in
 favor of more compatibility.

By run on all devices, they mean run on all devices with browsers that
implement proprietary DRM on HTML5 videos. Surely you must have heard
about the political games surrounding the EME (Encrypted Media Extensions)
proposal in front of the W3C last year, which would specify a standard
interface through which DRM providers could provide non-standard encryption
modules which, needless to say, would be provided in binary form only...
Netflix is one of the biggest proponents of that feature.

The only reason Netflix currently works using HTML5 on IE11 on Win8.1 is
because Microsoft added those extensions independently, without waiting for
the W3C. So, Netflix still depends on a proprietary, Windows-only binary.
Maybe later this year it'll also be available as a proprietary iOS binary
or proprietary Android binary, but I'd be pretty surprised if any Linux
browser (with the possible exception of the binary version of Chrome, since
Netflix does plan to support ChromeOS) will support these extensions.

http://techblog.netflix.com/2013/04/html5-video-at-netflix.html

It could still be a better solution than the Pipelight one, but it's a far
cry from what most people (or even companies) mean when they say
HTML5 video, thinking they're talking about an open standard that will
run on anything.

[Bug 1034132] Re: [MacBook2,1] Touchpad cursor moving in steps

2014-04-28 Thread Rob
I tried Ubuntu 14.04 on a Macbook 2,1 (1.83GHz Core 2 Duo). The cursor
doesn't work right. Apple cut support for OSX 10.6 so I wanted to switch
to Linux but I need the trackpad.

According to this person, it's not just the driver but Apple's
integration of hardware with software:

[Bug 1310762] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 random freeze and lock up

2014-04-22 Thread Rob Watson
I concur. Since Ubuntu 13.04, I have seen quick lockups with both the
nouveau and nVidia drivers in all the Ubuntu and derivative variants I
have tried (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, Mint, Mint KDE, etc). My original
problem occurred when I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04. Since then,
that kernel/nvidia driver combo has been completely unusable. I can use
Mint LMDE (Cinnamon) which is kernel 3.10 (I think?) and Korora/Fedora
20 (which is kernel 3.13.10) even though resume doesn't work there, so
it seems that kernel 3.13 breaks something graphical. I dread the day
that LMDE upgrades to kernel 3.13, because I expect things to break
then and I'll be left wth Windows 7 as my only working alternative since
I can't find a Linux distro (out of the hundreds available) that just
works.

(FWIW, Solyd* both also both fail miserably with the same problem. The
problem is clearly upstream of Ubuntu as it affects a number of distros
with that kernel/nVidia driver combo.)

It's a pity that some things that used to work no longer do so, and the
people that break them don't seem to care. I've ssen many responses on
these bug report sites where the user is being blamed for the bugs, or
being told that's normal; get over it. This is just not bloody good
enough.

FWIW: nVidia GeForce GT240.

Chad,
I believe I already mentioned Super ALT S to toggle speech on and off.
The Super key is also known as the Windows key.

Hi Chad,
It is accessible.
Are you aware that super alt S starts Orca at the Lightdm login screen?
I do not think that the drum sound defaults to being enabled.
There has been quite a lot of bug fixing worked on for accessibility.
I hope once you get your system up and running you find the overall
experience a good one.

Good luck

Re: trouble with 14.04

2014-04-17 Thread Rob Whyte
Hi,
The Super ALT S is a global keybind for Lightdm Unity or the Gnome variants.
The bug fixes were mainly targetted at the Unity interface, Gnome is
quite polished already.
There are expected differences but with some Googling or maybe wiki
sharing over this list or a wiki usually it is common to be able to
restore an expected function.

Thanks
Rob

Logical volume management I think it stands for.

It would be a good idea if there were a Wiki that reflected

Hi,
Yes, Unity is Unity 3d since Unity 2D was dropped.
It is well worth taking for a spin.

Super ALT S has replaced the once Control S to enable the accessibility
profile.
The stack already runs by defautl so you do not need to logout for
things to work.

[Bug 1068390] Re: pbuilder-dist dies when there is no development release

2014-04-16 Thread Rob Austein
This bug just came back, it is not fixed. Trigger appears to be the
date: as of about two hours ago it is 2014-04-17 UTC, which happens to
be the last release date listed in /usr/share/distro-info/ubuntu.csv.
So the distro_info library thinks there is no development release, and
throws an exception when asked.

I think the correct fix for pbuilder-dist is just to catch the exception
and conclude that perhaps if there is no development release, we're not
trying to build for the development release, and just get on with the
job.

2014-04-07 Thread Rob Tongue
Caleb, also, this is not an issue in Kubuntu as they do not use any of
the indicator-* stuff that I am aware of.

** Description changed:

in 13.04 (Raring), Quassel doesn't have an entry in the messaging applet
anymore (The Envelope), and the tray icon does not work. To duplicate,
install either of the quassel, quassel-client applications, and launch.
In 12.04 there is an entry in the messaging menu, but in 13.04 there is
not. Also enabling the tray icon in quassel has no effect. There is
  simply no tray icon.

I can't test easily against mainline due to some API changes in the

[Bug 1301439] Re: General Protection fault

2014-04-02 Thread Rob Schmidt
downgrading the kernel (to the precise kernel) seems to eliminate the
problem. Can try upgrading to the newest too if that is helpful.

[Bug 1301439] Re: General Protection fault

2014-04-02 Thread Rob Schmidt
I have tested it against a newer kernel (3.11) from saucy and the bug is
fixed there.

I'll test it against the newest mainline just for completeness, but suspect it
is fixed there as well.

Re: Vinux Keyboard commands

2014-04-01 Thread Rob Whyte
Hi Glen,

Please take a look and explore of the Vinux wiki.
http://wiki.vinuxproject.org
As the Vinux community have worked hard to make sure there is lots of
goodies there that would be the first place to start.
Specifically here for getting used to Unity.

 Hi,
I've been searching to find a list of keyboard commands for Vinux.
This Ubuntu, 12.04, is challenging, and the old menu ways don't work much.
Can someone send me a list of Vinux, or otherwise, Ubuntu 12.04 keyboard
 shortcuts?
I am sure that there are some specific to Vinux, but either set would help a
 lot.
 Thanks.

[Bug 1299663] [NEW] Intel DisplayPort Buffer Underrun

2014-03-29 Thread Rob Ludwick
Public bug reported:

Similar to Bugs #1239186, #1290400

AMD hybrid video. Fglrx drivers are not installed, so it's effectively
an Intel HD4000 Display adapter.

Displayport monitor randomly blacks out, usually during load (playing
videos, audio, or both).

Turning on debugging in the drm module, I see:

[ 227.074336] [drm:ivb_err_int_handler], Pipe A FIFO underrun
[ 227.074350] [drm:cpt_serr_int_handler], PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun

[Bug 1297429] [NEW] Using Firefox with Gnome-Orca the caret becomes unresponsive and Orca access keys such as headings buttons edit fields stop responding.

2014-03-25 Thread Rob Whyte
Public bug reported:

Normal navigation using Orca and Firefox 28, after a while Orca will
become non responsive. The access keys an Orca user would normally use
such as H to jump to next heading or B to find next button stop working.
Orca is still aware that it is in Firefox and re-loading the Orca
preferences seem to fix the problem. Can not re-produce this outside of
Unity whilst using Gnome-shell and had previously tried downgrading
Firefox, that does not seem to fix the problem. To re-produce simply use
Firefox for a while with Orca openning links in new pages and closing
them for a couple of minutes, or typing in edit fields the edit text
will become unreadable and the bug will become apparent. I have also
raised this bug with Gnome-a11y on IRC and they seem to not be aware of
it therefore I think it is Unity specific.

works fine - from the pm_trace logs I suspect the issue was that I'd
disabled the serial port.

I'm happy for this bug to be closed, or changed to a lower priority.
I'll rename it to reflect the actual bug.

[Bug 1295704] [NEW] Include gss_inquire_cred() patch submitted upstream

2014-03-21 Thread Rob Crittenden
Public bug reported:

I'm the Fedora maintainer of python-kerberos.

I've submitted a patch upstream to add an API for gss_inquire_cred(),
https://trac.calendarserver.org/ticket/830 , but haven't gotten any
response at all in weeks.

I want to include this patch into Fedora but don't want to create an
incompatibility with other distros. Can you consider including this
patch as well?

This patch adds new API so you can determine the current principal
without making a server connection or having to make direct Kerberos
calls (using python-krbV, for example).

[Bug 1295382] [NEW] Dell Latitude E7240 does not resume from suspend

2014-03-20 Thread Rob Day
Public bug reported:

Seen with 14.04 beta 1 (Trusty).

When I suspend my Dell Latitude E7240 laptop (either by closing the lid,
running pm-suspend or selecting Sleep from the KDE menu) it suspends
successfully and the power LED flashes. When I try and resume it (either
by opening the laptop or by pressing the power button), it starts to
resume (the power button stops flashing and is fully lit up) but nothing
appears on the screen and my wifi indicator starts flashing (on for ~4
seconds, off for ~4 seconds) until I power off the machine by holding
the power button down.

I've reproduced this with linux-image-3.14.0-031400rc7-generic (the
latest non-nightly kernel mainline), as recommended by
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend. I've also booted into
the 12.04 Kubuntu install CD and suspended that, which experiences the
same problem.

I'm using the latest BIOS (A08). I'm reasonably confident this isn't a
problem with my wifi card - I experience the same symptoms when it is
disabled in the BIOS or switched off by the hardware switch.

I've followed the pm_trace instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and attached it. That
does include the lines:

[1.458151] Magic number: 6:635:599
[1.458165] serial8250 serial8250: hash matches

However, lsmod doesn't show a serial8250 module loaded.

[Bug 1228079] Re: Login issue: Lightdm + LDAP + Kerberos

Hi, I've filed a bug internally on the PBIS Open bugzilla, to change the

same as [success=ok default=ignore] and looks cleaner).

Thanks for picking this up for us!

[Bug 1248684] Re: gnome-system-log crashed during start

2014-03-19 Thread Rob Hills
I created a filter using a Regex expression. Following this, gnome-
system-log crashes each time I try to start it, with the following error
message:

(gnome-system-log:6811): GLib-GIO-ERROR **:
g_menu_item_set_detailed_action: Detailed action name 'win.filter_Vesper
Marine' has invalid format

My filter was simply this:

(?i)vesper

I don't do much Regex and I was trying to do a case-insensitive search.
Anyway, hopefully this will help developers to reproduce the but.

[Bug 1235754] Re: quassel-* entry missing from indicator plugin (envelope), and tray icon doesn't work.

2014-03-13 Thread Rob Tongue
metRo_, not in Ubuntu/Unity. A nasty workaround for Xubuntu is to
remove the indicator-application package. That will at least allow the
tray icon to appear, but if anything else uses that package, you will
lose that as well. For example, the volume indicator.

The Quassel team states that this is a won't-fix because Canonical
changed the way this works in incompatible ways. I don't agree with
this, but it is what it is. If anyone wants to step up and write a
patch, that would be awesome. However, for now, I just accept the fact
that there is no indicator or tray icon in Unity for Quassel.

[Bug 880881] Re: Power indicator does not combine multiple battery status

2014-03-11 Thread Rob Tongue
I will add my comments, Charles, you say this is by design, but it is a
design flaw. The battery gets down to about 5 minutes remaining, and
stops discharging. That means, it will ALWAYS show 5 minutes remaining
in the panel, but it is really only discharging from the second battery
at that point. It..never...goes.away.
