[Bug 1899233] Re: post login - no apps launched - virtualbox-dkms 6.1.10-dfsg-1~ubuntu1.20.04.1: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-01-08 Thread Rob Parker
I'm also seeing the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS after updates pulled
in a 5.8 kernel as part of HWE. Kernel module build errors were returned
during the update and indeed VirtualBox VMs fail to start when running
the 5.8 kernel. If I instead boot from a 5.4 kernel (selected from the
GRUB menu) I can still start VirtualBox VMs.

Switching to VirtualBox's upstream repo/packages is not preferred option
for me. The last I checked, admittedly a few months ago, their upstream
packages still depend on Python 2 whereas the VirtualBox packages in
Ubuntu's repos depend on Python 3. Plus I've historically found
VirtualBox's upstream repo servers intermittently unreliable, the
typical cause of errors when updating my APT cache (e.g. "apt(-get)
update").

[Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-05-04 Thread Rob Parker
Another consideration are users with Nvidia graphics.

>From what I understand, GNOME Shell's fractional scaling support only
works with Wayland.

But Nvidia's proprietary driver doesn't yet support Wayland. Some may
argue the fault for that situation lies with Nvidia.

But this is nonetheless a regression from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, where the
default desktop (Unity 7) has fractional scaling support which works
with Nvidia's proprietary driver.

All that said, even for users without Nvidia graphics, I suppose the
regression (of loosing fractional scaling support) also exists given
that Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, for understandable reasons, has gone back to
X.org by default.

Personally I'll probably be sticking with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for the
foreseeable future, due to this.

[Bug 1350810] Re: Shift-F2 no longer working in Byobu in Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) with tmux 1.9

2016-08-22 Thread Rob Parker
Hi TenLeftFingers,

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this issue.

However as to whether the issue lies, I would counter that gnome-
terminal on Ubuntu 14.04 could connect to the same Debian 8 server and
not suffer the issue, whereas the issue does occur when connecting with
gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 16.04. The versions of byobu and tmux on the
Debian 8 server had not changed between connecting from Ubuntu 14.04 and
connecting from Ubuntu 16.04

Yes it's true that byobu on Ubuntu 16.04 itself doesn't suffer the
issue, but it appears something within Ubuntu has changed between 14.04
and 16.04 which causes the difference in behaviour when connecting to
the same Debian 8 server.

Whether whatever has changed in Ubuntu should be considered a bug, or an
expected change, is probably another question - I'd perhaps argue it is
a bug, but we'll have to see. Either way, we need to find out what has
changed.

[Bug 1350810] Re: Shift-F2 no longer working in Byobu in Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) with tmux 1.9

2016-08-03 Thread Rob Parker
It may be a different/unrelated issue, but I'm experiencing something
similar since rebuilding my laptop with Ubuntu 16.04, having previously
been using 14.04.

>From gnome-terminal I run byobu (from the Ubuntu 16.04 repos) locally
and also, in another gnome-terminal window, I SSH to a Debian 8 server
running byobu (from the Debian 8 repos).

Since upgrading my laptop to 16.04 local byobu is still fine, but I'm
seeing an issue when using gnome-terminal to SSH to byobu on Debian 8.
It is where Shift+F2 simply causes a tilde (~) to be printed, rather
than a new horizontal split being created. In-fact Shift+F1 through to
Shift+F8 all cause a tilde to be printed.

Do you know whether this issue is related to Ubuntu 16.04's gnome-
terminal, Debian 8's byobu, or something else? Notably, the issue did
not occur when using gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 14.04 to connect to byobu
on the same Debian 8 server. If it's a known issue, is there's a
workaround?

[Bug 1277128] Re: LibreOffice crashes when trying to open template for editing from Template Manager

2014-02-09 Thread Rob Parker
** Description changed:

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) amd64 _with_ the
ppa:libreoffice/ppa repository/PPA enabled, and this issue is with the
current packages (showing as 4.2.0.4 within LibreOffice and
  1:4.2.0~rc4-0ubuntu1~precise4 as the package versions).

When I have a template in the Template Manager, clicking the Edit button
should open it up for editing and close the Template Manager. Instead
the template opens behind the template manager, but then LibreOffice
hangs or crashes. I've had this issue both with a Writer (.ott file)
template which I created myself, and with the Impress templates which
  are provided by default.

I've tried moving ~/.config/libreoffice such that LibreOffice can start
with fresh user data, but this did not stop the problem occurring.
Unfortunately starting LO in a terminal, with commands such as
'lowriter', 'libreoffice' or 'soffice', does not seem to produce any
  output I can paste here.

UPDATE: See my comment #2, where I note the problem also appears to
effect the version of LibreOffice in the current 14.04 (trusty), as of
  the 08-Feb-2014 07:49 daily build.
+
+ UPDATE 2: As noted in my comments #3 and #4 I found this issue also
+ effects LO on Windows, so went to report the bug upstream, only to find
+ an existing report there, which I have now linked. That report seems to
+ suggest the upcoming 4.2.1 release of LO should have fixed the issue.

[Bug 1277128] Re: LibreOffice crashes when trying to open template for editing from Template Manager

2014-02-08 Thread Rob Parker
I've just downloaded an Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) Daily Build (trusty-
desktop-amd64.iso), dated 08-Feb-2014 07:49, to test for the same issue
there, and it does indeed seem to be present.

I ran the daily build (in 'live' form, rather than installing) in a
VirtualBox 4.3.6 virtual machine. As of this current build it has
LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 (package version 1:4.2.0~rc4-0ubuntu1).

I tested for this issue, similarly to as I did on 12.04 (where 12.04 had a PPA
enabled, unlike 14.04), by:
 1) Open any LibreOffice application (e.g. Writer, Impress, etc.)
 2) Open the Template Manager via
   File -- Templates -- Manage
 3) In the Template Manager window, click the Presentations tab
 4) Double-click on the 'Presentation Backgrounds' folder which should
already be there
 5) Singe-click any of the templates shown then click the Edit button above
 6) Notice that all LibreOffice windows disappear.
It's noteworthy that in the case of 12.04+PPA, I also had the same problem with
my own Writer template.

So to reiterate, this problem appears to affect the version of
LibreOffice which is currently in 14.04 (trusty) builds, in addition to
the version provided for 12.04 (precise) by the ppa:libreoffice/ppa PPA.

It breaks what appears to be the main way for a user to edit an existing
template. The only workarounds I've found are either as described in my
comment #1, or that after a first creating and saving a template it will
appear in LibreOffice's recent documents from where it can still be
opened for editing.

I'm about to install the current release of LibreOffice for Windows
(from upstream http://www.libreoffice.org/ ) into a Windows XP VM, to
see whether this issue exists there too.

As mentioned at the end of my last comment (#2), I've now tested for the
same problem with (upstream) LibreOffice on Windows (a XP VM), and the

[Bug 1011446] Re: UML drawing tools' comment fields are too small to be usable

2013-11-26 Thread Rob Parker
I too can confirm this bug with dia-gnome 0.97.2-5 on Ubuntu 12.04.3
(amd64).

I did however find another workaround - from http://osdir.com/ml/dia-
list/2013-09/msg00034.html - whereby starting Dia with an environmental
variable set to disable Ubuntu's overlay scrollbar does seem to stop the
unwanted behaviour.

Therefore it would appear to me that this bug could well be down to an
incompatibility between Dia and the aforementioned overlay scrollbar
('overlay-scrollbar'?).

[Bug 761176] Re: wlan (AR928X, ath9k) slow since upgrade to natty

2011-06-07 Thread Rob Parker
I've tried the kernel from comment #17 but I'm still having the issue
(connection unusably slow and most often 'dies' after a short while...
but still appearing the be connected from NetworkManager's perspective -
requests just sit there waiting) - I've also tried the .39 kernels from
the PPA in comment #8 (and of course the normal Natty kernel).

This is on an Acer Aspire 5742G; lspci reports the wireless chipset as
03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9287 Wireless
Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). I also tried the workaround
described in comments #1 and #6 with all three aforementioned kernel
versions and this also appeared to have no effect. If there's any
logs/reports that'd be helpful for me to provide, please let me know.

[Bug 651357] [NEW] 'Network error' on attempting to connect to GTalk account on Maverick Empathy

2010-09-29 Thread Rob Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When adding a 'Google Talk' account in Empathy on Maverick (amd64), I
always receive 'Disconnected - Network error' - however if I add the
same Google account (with same username and password) using the 'Jabber'
(which should surely be 'XMPP' nowadays?) account type Empathy is able
to connect successfully. Testing different states of the 'Encryption
required (SSL)' and 'Ignore SSL certificates errors' options does no
appear to fix the issue.

The only possible cause on my part could be that I am behind a rather
strict university firewall - however I have had the port used by Google
Talk and most other XMPP services - TCP 5222 - unblocked, and hence
Pidgin, and the aforementioned Jabber account type in Empathy, are able
connect fine (they were not prior to having this unblocked).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Empathy.
2. If the 'Messaging and VoIP Accounts' window has not already opened, open it
from Edit Accounts in the 'Contact List' window.
3. Click the 'Add...' button.
4. Set the 'Protocol' to 'Google Talk'.
5. Enter a valid Google account's username (the full email address, including
the domain) and password in the 'User ID' and 'Password' boxes.
6. Click the 'Log in' button.
7. Note how red-background messages appear in both the 'Messaging and VoIP
Accounts' and 'Contact List' windows.
8. Use the 'Remove' button to delete the account, and repeat the process from
steps 3-6, but this time use 'Jabber' as the protocol instead of 'Google Talk',
and note how the connection succeeds.
