Try installing the package ubuntu-restricted-extras
That should install most of the codecs required to play A/V files.
Also install VLC and check if vlc can play the dat file.

In order to install the driver for wifi, first get connected to the
net using your Airtel connection (don't worry, the driver is quite
small in size, it will not take much time). Then go to System -->
Administration --> Hardware drivers
You will get a list of proprietary drivers that are available for your
system. I guess Dell Latitude D400 uses Broadcom wifi card. Select the
Broadcom STA driver and click activate. It should download and install
the driver on your system. Restart your computer. Wifi should work.
Please try this out.

Well you are absolutely right that Ubuntu should automatically do
these things, so that the user doesn't need to worry about these
little issues. However the problem in this case is not with Ubuntu.
Broadcom is not kind enough to provide GNU GPLed (sorry, but in case
you don't know what it is -- it is a software license that allows free
distribution/development of the software, read more about this here if
you want - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html) drivers.
The current drivers that are available for Broadcom are proprietary,
which restricts their free distribution as well as development.
For example computers having wifi card from Intel, generally work out
of the box, since Intel releases open source drivers for most of their
hardwares. These open source drivers can be included in the default
installation, since there is no issue with the distribution of such
drivers.

Anyway please mail us, if you come across any issue while installing
the drivers.

Thanks.

Hi Suranjan,
When you are in that cybercafe, can you see their wifi connection on
the list of wifi networks (You can get this list by left-clicking on
the network manager icon in the upper panel) ?
If you can see the name in the list, then your job is half done.
Try clicking on that, to check if you get an ip address automatically via dhcp.
If not, You have to right click on the network manager icon --> Edit
connections --> Wireless Networks --> Add
Now you can manually put in the info like SSID, IP address, gateway, dns etc.

However in case you can't see the name of the wifi network in the list
of networks, then it might be that you would have to install the
drivers for your wlan card.

Please check this and tell.

Re: [ubuntu-in] LAN repository from DVDs

2009-12-23 Thread Sambit Bikas Pal
You can also try the following simpler method first. No need to go for
apt-mirror

a) First create a local repository as described here from the DVDs -
http://www.zyxware.com/articles/2008/03/05/ubuntu-repository-on-dvds-available-at-zyxware-order-it-now

b) Next install apache/lighttpd in the machine where you have created
the local repo as above.

c) Serve the directory where you dumped the contents of the DVDs, via
apache/lighttpd (For e.g if you had dumped them in /var/ubuntu/ , then
serve that location through your http server by creating a symlink in
/var/www pointing to /var/ubuntu . You may need to make appropriate
changes in the conf file of the webserver to allow that.)

d)Suppose the contents are now avaliable at http://localserver/ubuntu
(obviously replace localserver with the FQDN/ IP Address of your
webserver).

e)In the clients in your LAN, change the sources.conf file so that
they now point to
deb http://localserver/ubuntu main restricted multiverse universe
and run apt-get update

f) The above should work.

Hope this helps. Please tell us, if it worked.

Bump!
I have local repositories of Ubuntu Intrepid, Jaunty & Karmic as well
as Debian Lenny and they are working really well. However I created
them using apt-mirror by directly downloading all the packages from
the internet. I had described it here in details -
http://www.botcyb.org/2008/11/setting-up-local-ubuntu-debian-mirror.html
Though I haven't tried it myself, but I guess it should be possible to
use apt-mirror to create a local repository by fetching packages from
the DVDs that you have, by doing the following trick. The
configuration file (see the link above) for apt-mirror has entries
like -

deb http://ftp.twaren.net/Linux/Ubuntu/ubuntu/ karmic main restricted
universe multiverse

which tell apt-mirror where to get the packages from. By replacing
this with something like-

deb file:///var/ubuntu/dvd-1 main restricted multiverse universe
deb file:///var/ubuntu/dvd-2 main restricted multiverse universe
deb file:///var/ubuntu/dvd-3 main restricted multiverse universe

it "should" be possible to direct apt-mirror to get the packages from
the the local dump. Check this link -
http://www.zyxware.com/articles/2008/03/05/ubuntu-repository-on-dvds-available-at-zyxware-order-it-now
which describes how to dump the contents of the DVDs.

Once apt-mirror is tricked into fetching the packages from the local
dump instead of the internet, you can follow the rest of the
instructions at
http://www.botcyb.org/2008/11/setting-up-local-ubuntu-debian-mirror.html

Hope this helps! :)

Great Idea! However there is a bit of hassle involved in getting the Tshirts
printed by some third party, other that Canonical. As mentioned in their
trademark policy - http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy , one is
required to obtain a trademark license for "Use for merchandising purposes,
e.g. on t-shirts and the like".

Alternatively what we can do is design a template for imprinting on Tshirts
and distribute the design. One can then personally use the template and get
the Tshirt printed by himself/herself from some online shop selling
customisable Tshirts (We have personally used http://www.myntra.com for
getting our college tshirts printed, their prices are reasonable, within Rs.
300/- to Rs. 500/- . There are quite a few other such Indian shops as well
and btw I don't work for Myntra, just one of their satisfied customers :) ).
Open distribution of the community designed template based on Ubuntu logo
should fall within "Community Advocacy" and getting the design printed on a
Tshirt for personal use should fall within "no commercial intent behind the
use" as one is not selling the Tshirts.
Usage of the Ubuntu logo under the above circumstances is explicitly allowed
by the Ubuntu trademark policy without a trademark license.

Ofcourse this was my two cents, kindly correct me if I have been wrong
somewhere.
Thanks.

I hope the panel on the top is still there. Right-click on the panel
at the top, and select "New-panel". A new gnome-panel should appear.
Drag the panel to whatever position you prefer (side or bottom). Right
click on the new panel and select "Add to Panel", an option window

This should do the job. Hope it helps.

You can't directly use your own domain name with DynDNS. You have to
use mydomain.secondarydomain.com and then add a CNAME record such that
your registered domain points to mydomain.secondarydomain.com.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Hosting sites on ubuntu

2008-10-13 Thread Sambit Bikas Pal
If the domain registrar doesn't allow to add CNAME records (as it was
in my case), then you need to get an account with some free DNS
service provider like freedns.afraid.org . In the Domain registrars
control panel, you need to change the nameserver responsible for your
domain to those of freedns'. It can take upto 48hrs for the change to
be reflected globally. So wait for that period. You can check by doing
a whois lookup for your domain. After the change has taken place, you
can add required DNS entries in Freedns' control panel. Freedns allows
upto 20 records including mx records for mailservers, A records, txt
records, CNAME, URL forwarding. Hopefully your domain registrar is
better than mine, so that all these extra hassles are not required.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Hosting sites on ubuntu

2008-10-13 Thread Sambit Bikas Pal
You have to get a free account from a Dynamic DNS service provider
like www.dyndns.com .You will get a hostname like example.selfip.com
or example.homeip.net, etc. Next you need to install an update client
- there is one called ddclient in the ubuntu repo. It checks your
external IP and updates DynDNS' records so that example.selfip.com
always resolves to your IP address. Now in the control panel for your
domain, you have to add a CNAME record. Suppose you have registered
the domain example.com. Then you need to CNAME www.example.com to
example.selfip.com. The purpose of CNAME record is, that
www.example.com will now resolve to the IP address of
example.selfip.com ,i.e. your IP.
