[Bug 252150] [NEW] Wireless lan LED blinking on activity
Public bug reported: Version: Intrepid Alpha 3 Machine: Dell Inspiron 6400n Kernel: 2.6.24-4-generic Driver: iwl3945 The wireless lan LED worked instantly. However, it is blinking on wireless activity, which can be really annoying. I don't have any references (yet), but blinking is really bad for usability, as it requests focus from the user. Focus on the LED is not needed, so it shouldn't blink. The LED should blink if there is *no* connection, or if something is wrong. This should be marked as improvement request. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wireless lan LED blinking on activity https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252150 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For an LTS release should we just add 2 months on the schedule? It was done officially for Dapper and I wonder if we didn't do it informally for Hardy? For 8.04, a deliberate effort was made by Canonical to continue stabilization in response to real-world testing after the 8.04 release. In practice, many issues which affect users are only discovered when end users begin to upgrade and use the new release on a daily basis, and for this release, we prepared a comprehensive response to this feedback. That was exactly my argument (to myself) when I thought of answering to the original poster. Yes, Ubuntu 8.04 was kind of a low point for me, because (while it was stable), there were many regressions and bugs. Sometimes I wished the release had been put back to 8.06. The problem is that even with all the alpha/beta/rc testing available to Ubuntu, the most tests are only done when the release is out. So, better to release and fix afterwards... *really* focussing on the bugfixing though, as has been done, *not* focussing on the next release immediately. signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
Re: Did we really release 8.04?
Am Montag, den 07.07.2008, 14:04 +0100 schrieb Matt Zimmerman: On Mon, Jul 07, 2008 at 08:30:28AM -0400, Scott Kitterman wrote: This is not sustainable in the long term. Before long people will be saying, Everyone know not to upgrade Ubuntu until the first point release. Then we don't get the end user base to test until .1 and we have to bugfix from there. While this is a natural assumption, if you think about it a bit further, I think you'll agree that this is not the case in practice, because we don't have a single end user base which behaves consistently. Ubuntu serves a wide variety of different users, who have different expectations and levels of willingness to participate. These range from hard-core developers who are already running Intrepid, through power users who may upgrade during the beta period, through enthusiasts who will upgrade as soon as a new release is out, through casual users who will wait until later, to conservative users who will only consider LTS. By orienting our quality processes toward these different groups, we allow our users to choose their own tradeoffs between stability and timeliness. I agree. If you need the highest stability in Ubuntu, you will install only LTS releases anyway. If all users behaved like that, all releases in the two years between LTS releases would be untested. Most people will still install the regular 6-month releases though. For me, it's mostly an unconscious barrier of *really* testing alphas and betas: Between IRC, mailing list, alpha page and the download page, from every corner I get THIS IS ALPHA SOFTWARE! DON'T USE! IT *WILL* BREAK!. While the actual releases are of course never bug-free, I have no problem with installing something that the developers consider ready for release. The belief of the users in the Ubuntu developers is what drives people to use the regular releases, even if they may not be perfectly tested. ------ Another point: It seems that it's one of two evils: 1) Either free up time from work to thoroughly test and install alphas and betas 2) Or install releases that are not tested enough, and lose time at work because of bugs The problem is that people like me would like to test alpha/beta software and report bugs, but fear the breakage and the unusability of their work machine. When I need to have software ready the next day, I can't accept some development application not working. When friends come around, I can't accept my MP3 player or sound subsystem not working. So, maybe it is somehow technically possible to combine test alpha/beta software with the concern for stability. I don't know how though. Maybe packages in the alpha need to have some kind of quality stamp by the developer/packager, like will definitely break, probably won't break, will break but has SO COOL FEATURES! ;P, is ready for production, and so on... and users could decide if they want to install that or not. Of course, then we still have the dependency problem, and the problem of changing architecture in the alphas, which is unsolvable with different package states for each user... Sorry, these are all just random thoughts. I just want to provide some insight in what goes on in my head when it comes to testing. It's not that I don't want to test the alphas, it's the fear that I might not be able to do my work tomorrow. And separate alpha installs just don't do the testing job. ;) Bye, Sebastian. signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

I just want to mention two things that are most probably true: 1) Power saving is known to destroy hardware, not even hard drives; That's known to technically inclined people. Monitors, power supplies, fans, anything can break earlier if power management interferes with it constantly, *especially* mechanical hardware like hard drives. 2) Users who tweak their configs should know what they are doing. = Users who tweak power management settings should be aware they might make things worse. I'm not saying to leave this bug alone. I'm only saying I'm much more worried about casual users who have the problem since install, and don't know anything... and suddenly their drive is trashed. I myself was completely unaware of the bug some months ago, but I was aware of my disk constantly clicking. After some time, I did some research, and then the issue also crept up on IT news sites. [Bug 89189] Re: Some windows do not render with Desktop Effects enabled on some hardware
The fix works for me, but it seems only until I need to log out and log in again. After that it just stops working. I have to use the XAANoOffscreenPixmaps workaround to make it work reliably. Can anybody confirm that this is indeed not fixed? [Bug 89786] Re: Desktop-effect does not enable cube
o_O? I was replying to zeddock. He said that he had problems with the NVidia driver. The current bug is a gconf/compiz issue and has nothing to do with the driver. I merely pointed that out to zeddock. You should note that this is the original bug for a duplicate that You (Kristian) reported, and when I'm replying to certain statements here I'm not necessarily talking to You. ;) If You don't have any problems with the NVidia driver, then that's perfectly fine. zeddock has, and he should talk about it in another bug, not this one. -- Desktop-effect does not enable cube https://launchpad.net/bugs/89786 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This bug will be fixed, it's already being worked on. [Bug 90339] [edgy] Can't read signed + encrypted mail when sig-key not available
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I just got a mail that was encrypted (for me) and signed (from the other person). Because I did not yet have his key, Evolution showed a red error message about not being able to find the public key, together with the encrypted mail. Saving the mail and decrypting on the command line (gpg -d mail) was possible, though GPG also complained about not being able to verify the signature. Evolution should at least decrypt the message, showing only errors about the signature verification. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open Evolution 2. Receive GPG-encrypted -signed mail 3. Open the mail 4. Enter GPG password Actual results: I see a red error message about the public key for the signature not being found + the encrypted mail text. Expected results: I'd like to see the decrypted mail text + a signature verification warning. Does this happen every time? [Bug 89960] [feisty] Beagle not integrated into gnome menu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: beagle I have beagle installed, but still got Places = Search for Files... which opens the regular gnome search program.
