[Bug 252149] [NEW] Sound settings not obeyed (volume/mute)

2008-07-26 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Version: Intrepid Alpha 3
Machine: Dell Inspiron 6400n
Audio device: Intel Corp 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
(rev 01)

Audio settings are not obeyed at all.
I hear sound all the time on 100% volume, no matter where the real setting is.
Also, muting does not work at all.

I'll do further research.

[Bug 252150] [NEW] Wireless lan LED blinking on activity

2008-07-26 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Version: Intrepid Alpha 3
Machine: Dell Inspiron 6400n
Kernel: 2.6.24-4-generic
Driver: iwl3945

The wireless lan LED worked instantly.
However, it is blinking on wireless activity, which can be really annoying.
I don't have any references (yet), but blinking is really bad for usability, as
it requests focus from the user.
Focus on the LED is not needed, so it shouldn't blink.
The LED should blink if there is *no* connection, or if something is wrong.

This should be marked as improvement request.

For 8.04, a deliberate effort was made by Canonical to continue
stabilization in response to real-world testing after the 8.04 release. In
practice, many issues which affect users are only discovered when end users
begin to upgrade and use the new release on a daily basis, and for this
release, we prepared a comprehensive response to this feedback.

That was exactly my argument (to myself) when I thought of answering to
the original poster.

Yes, Ubuntu 8.04 was kind of a low point for me, because (while it was
stable), there were many regressions and bugs.
Sometimes I wished the release had been put back to 8.06.

The problem is that even with all the alpha/beta/rc testing available to
Ubuntu, the most tests are only done when the release is out.

So, better to release and fix afterwards... *really* focussing on the
bugfixing though, as has been done, *not* focussing on the next release
immediately.

This is not sustainable in the long term. Before long people will be
saying, Everyone know not to upgrade Ubuntu until the first point
release. Then we don't get the end user base to test until .1 and we have
  to bugfix from there.

While this is a natural assumption, if you think about it a bit further, I
think you'll agree that this is not the case in practice, because we don't
have a single end user base which behaves consistently.

Ubuntu serves a wide variety of different users, who have different
expectations and levels of willingness to participate. These range from
hard-core developers who are already running Intrepid, through power users
who may upgrade during the beta period, through enthusiasts who will upgrade
as soon as a new release is out, through casual users who will wait until
later, to conservative users who will only consider LTS.

By orienting our quality processes toward these different groups, we allow
our users to choose their own tradeoffs between stability and timeliness.

I agree.

If you need the highest stability in Ubuntu, you will install only LTS
releases anyway.
If all users behaved like that, all releases in the two years between
LTS releases would be untested.
Most people will still install the regular 6-month releases though.

For me, it's mostly an unconscious barrier of *really* testing alphas
and betas: Between IRC, mailing list, alpha page and the download page,
from every corner I get THIS IS ALPHA SOFTWARE! DON'T USE! IT *WILL*
BREAK!.
While the actual releases are of course never bug-free, I have no
problem with installing something that the developers consider ready
for release.

The belief of the users in the Ubuntu developers is what drives people
to use the regular releases, even if they may not be perfectly tested.

------

Another point:
It seems that it's one of two evils:
1) Either free up time from work to thoroughly test and install alphas
and betas
2) Or install releases that are not tested enough, and lose time at work
because of bugs

The problem is that people like me would like to test alpha/beta
software and report bugs, but fear the breakage and the unusability of
their work machine.
When I need to have software ready the next day, I can't accept some
development application not working.
When friends come around, I can't accept my MP3 player or sound
subsystem not working.

So, maybe it is somehow technically possible to combine test alpha/beta
software with the concern for stability.
I don't know how though.
Maybe packages in the alpha need to have some kind of quality stamp by
the developer/packager, like will definitely break, probably won't
break, will break but has SO COOL FEATURES! ;P, is ready for
production, and so on... and users could decide if they want to install
that or not.
Of course, then we still have the dependency problem, and the problem of
changing architecture in the alphas, which is unsolvable with different
package states for each user...

Sorry, these are all just random thoughts.
I just want to provide some insight in what goes on in my head when it
comes to testing.
It's not that I don't want to test the alphas, it's the fear that I
might not be able to do my work tomorrow.
And separate alpha installs just don't do the testing job. ;)

Bye,
Sebastian.

nvidia-envy is a privately packaged version of the NVidia driver by
Alberto Milone [1].
The actual Ubuntu NVidia driver in hardy (8.04) is 169.12
+2.6.24.13-19.42.

intrepid is a fork of Debian's current packages, and so it's no
requirement to have the latest NVidia driver, as they are not pulled
from the actual source at NVidia.

If you need a newer NVidia driver, you should file a bug report against
nvidia-glx-new on Launchpad that will request an update.

I hope that could clarify a couple of things. :-)

their HDD APM settings on the safe side (in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf)

Hi,

I don't want to dismiss your arguments, I have the problem (in quite a
nonhazardous way though, my drive will only die in 3 years) myself.

I just want to mention two things that are most probably true:
1) Power saving is known to destroy hardware, not even hard drives;
That's known to technically inclined people.
Monitors, power supplies, fans, anything can break earlier if power
management interferes with it constantly, *especially* mechanical
hardware like hard drives.
2) Users who tweak their configs should know what they are doing.

= Users who tweak power management settings should be aware they might
make things worse.

I'm not saying to leave this bug alone.
I'm only saying I'm much more worried about casual users who have the
problem since install, and don't know anything... and suddenly their
drive is trashed.

I myself was completely unaware of the bug some months ago, but I was
aware of my disk constantly clicking.
After some time, I did some research, and then the issue also crept up
on IT news sites.

To conclude: If people change a config setting to be on the safe side,
they better check if their (load_cycle_count / power_on) ratio
decreases.
You can't change configs and assume all is right without checking. ;-)

Bye,
Sebastian.

restart it but that didn't work because there was another firefox running.

On the command prompt I ran ps -ef |grep firefox and got a pid for the
 process firefox (defunct).

When I tried killing the process with kill -9 pid and sudo kill -9
pid but to no avail - it would not budge.

Any suggestions how to correct this problem in the future?

You can check with top if there are any flash player instances still
running, sometimes that stops FF from being killed.

Bye,
Sebastian.

Have you tried installing linux-backports-modules-hardy-generic? This

No idea if that helps, but usually, if a package install is problematic
and you have 211 not upgraded packages, you should sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade first to make sure you have the newest version of
dependent packages and dependencies in general. Try the -s switch to
simulate the upgrade first, because upgrading 211 packages might be

I hope it works after that.

Afaik, those lines were removed to make the xorg.conf completely basic,
because devices should be added and configured automatically by xorg in

they should be put back in.

[Bug 145152] Re: [gutsy] Pictures folder shows all pictures in $HOME

2008-01-30 Thread Sebastian Breier
I also installed your package. Thanks for providing it.

1)
When I do xscreensaver-getimage-file --verbose ~/Bilder (my pictures folder),
I get only the one unhidden file. So, no problem here.
I guess Christoph just used the wrong cmdline for getimage? Or is ~ as
directory correct, and it should still use only the pictures folder?

2)
Testing the screensaver for picture slideshow, it shows both hidden and
unhidden files

For the tests, I prepared my pictures folder with two pics, like this:
~/Bilder
~/Bilder/sandwich.png
~/Bilder/.hidden
~/Bilder/.hidden/christmas_sucks.jpg

The .hidden and christmas_sucks.jpg are not in the getimage listing, but
appear in the screensaver.

Hope that helps somehow. Ask for more debugging.

[Bug 159685] screensavers-personal-slideshow should not show hidden directories

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Last time the screensavers-personal-slideshow ran (a screensaver that shows
pictures from ~/Bilder, which is something like ~/Pictures in English), I

time I became aware of the existence of this screensaver. The images that were
shown lie in a hidden directory in my images folder.

I request that this screensaver doesn't traverse hidden directories when
looking for images to show. Hidden directories are hidden for a reason. :-)

[Bug 156201] System unresponsive when opening huge files in gedit

2007-10-23 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I just opened a 400 MB text file (mbox mail file) in gedit, and it my
system has now been unresponsive for minutes. Other editors can open
large files without a problem. Also, there's no progress bar or cancel
button that would make it easy to see how long gedit is loading the file
or to cancel the load.

[Bug 58179] Re: Doesn't autohide on context menu close

2007-09-10 Thread Sebastian Breier
It's annoying, yes. But I guess from a programmer's standpoint it's just
difficult to fix; I have no insight into the gnome code, but the context
menus are probably under the authority of the trayed applications, and
so it's difficult to find out if they have closed or opened... just a
guess. ;)

[Bug 138390] Won't load images from gnome-vfs source

2007-09-09 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I'm currently using gthumb on my laptop using the Ubuntu LiveCD,
watching images on my workstation using gnome-vfs (SSH connection).

It works alright for the first 57 images (of 707 vacation pictures), but
the 58th image (and subsequent) won't load at all: No thumbnail, and
when double clicking, no image shown. Also, gthumb won't load EXIF data
of these images. Reloading or restarting gthumb doesn't make any
difference.

I don't know how to debug this. strace shows too much information,
gthumb shows no errors on STDERR. Neither /tmp nor /home/ubuntu are
full. Swap has still 32 MB free (not much, but should be enough for a
picture of 3 MB, and it shouldn't matter anyway).

Affected versions are feisty (2.10.2-0ubuntu1) and gutsy
(2.10.5-0ubuntu2).

Other programs (like eog) can still load and show the images, so this is
not a read error or network error.

[Bug 77442] Re: No screen updates when using desktop-effects with vnc

2007-08-28 Thread Sebastian Breier
It's not that easy. Removing the background can be done on the fly
(right? I'm not 100% sure) while changing the wm would have to be done
at least user-wide; So a local user would lose compiz functionality as
well.

[Bug 72468] Re: Trash looks empty, isn't

2007-07-23 Thread Sebastian Breier
I use the Trash applet about weekly. It works most of the time. If there
was no trash applet, I'd have no way to empty (or look at) my trash at
all. Yes, there are things like enabling the desktop icon - but before
they're shipping Ubuntu with a desktop trash instead of the trash
applet, I'd rather suggest to fix the bug.

My point is that the software's buggy, yes - but it's far from unusable
for me and so it should stay; Also, the workaround needs such a long
time to implement (and would change the Ubuntu usability) that I'm sure
someone will fix the bug before. No need to remove an app.

Yep feisty... installed today from the 20070415 images. When I start it
manually (calling electricsheep), it says it's downloading sheep (yes,
my network connection is working) and spawns a couple of processes.
According to strace, the only thing these processes do is wait... some
are hanging on some restart call, some are waiting for other processes
to finish (wait_pid), one is waiting on a read call. I can provide
better answers, if these answers don't show any obvious problems...?

o_O?

I was replying to zeddock. He said that he had problems with the NVidia
driver. The current bug is a gconf/compiz issue and has nothing to do
with the driver. I merely pointed that out to zeddock.

You should note that this is the original bug for a duplicate that You

I'm not necessarily talking to You. ;)

If You don't have any problems with the NVidia driver, then that's
perfectly fine. zeddock has, and he should talk about it in another bug,
not this one.

[Bug 90339] [edgy] Can't read signed + encrypted mail when sig-key not available

2007-03-07 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I just got a mail that was encrypted (for me) and signed (from the other
person). Because I did not yet have his key, Evolution showed a red error
message about not being able to find the public key, together with the
encrypted mail.

Saving the mail and decrypting on the command line (gpg -d mail) was
possible, though GPG also complained about not being able to verify the
signature.

Evolution should at least decrypt the message, showing only errors about the
signature verification.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Evolution
2. Receive GPG-encrypted -signed mail
3. Open the mail
4. Enter GPG password

Actual results:
I see a red error message about the public key for the signature not being
found + the encrypted mail text.

Expected results:
I'd like to see the decrypted mail text + a signature verification warning.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Doesn't work with herd-5. Haven't tried workarounds, it should work out
of the box anyway.

[Bug 89419] No good way to daemonize

2007-03-03 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gbackground

I haven't found a simple way to daemonize this application. I want my
background picture to always change when I'm logged in, but gbackground
always needs to be started first (with GUI etc.).

I'll reinstall with herd-5 today or tomorrow (depending on when they
manage to release it) and we'll see. :-)

[Bug 78055] Re: ubuntu-restricted-extras depends on sun-java5; sun-java6 is now available

2007-02-24 Thread Sebastian Breier
At the least, ubuntu-restricted-extras should depend on sun-java5 |
sun-java6, so it'll still install java5 as dep, but if somebody (like
us Java devs) has installed java6, it won't install java5 additionally.

[Bug 87589] [feisty] No theme active

2007-02-24 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I just reinstalled feisty from daily-live (g-s 2.17.7-0ubuntu4) and -
like with the last herd-4 install - there was no screensaver theme set.
Earlier, the default was random, but now there is none at all.

Jamie: It has been fixed upstream in December 2006... I'm pretty sure
that fixed version is already in Ubuntu, but still broken.
