[Bug 1864613] Re: xfwm4 very, very slow - leaking something?

2022-03-04 Thread Shevek
This is:
* a significant memory leak
* causing me to have to restart Xorg every couple of days
* in the current LTS release
* reported over 2 years ago, and
* for which a fix is available.

Can we PLEASE get it in? Thank you.

[Bug 1864613] Re: xfwm4 very, very slow - leaking something?

2021-03-14 Thread Shevek
Oh, goody. Ironically, I had figured out that it was the compositor,
too, because repeatedly zooming and unzooming caused it to get worse
faster. What do we have to do to get this into bionic and focal?

[Bug 1330232] Re: remmina opens then closes immesiately. Trying to connect win win 8 server. Has been working fine until 3 days ago. same problem on 2 seperate machines

2020-10-09 Thread rukib shevek
I had the same problem. Changing the color depth didn't help, but I kept
tinkering with the configurations. Eventually I removed the entry
"||explorer" from the "startup program" field in the "advanced" tab. It
worked like a charm immediately after that.

[Bug 1864613] [NEW] xfwm4 very, very slow - leaking something?

2020-02-24 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

After some uptime, xfwm4 is VERY slow at something, to the point that
it's consuming 100% of CPU on a Xeon system and making the system
entirely unusable. I don't know who is leaking what, but somebody is
clearly leaking something.

I don't have debug symbols, so this is the best I can get:

[Bug 1853381] Re: Using HDMI output breaks displayport permanently

2019-11-20 Thread Shevek
Additional notes:
* When I enable the HDMI port, I used --mode 1920x1080 --scale-from 2840x2160
* I have just discovered that I _can_ reenable the DP using nvidia-settings,
but ONLY as a mirror-of or BELOW my existing laptop screen. What I cannot do is
make the DP screen be ABOVE my laptop screen. It's as if using the HDMI port
(with scale-from?) has locked the laptop screen to X coordinates (0,0).

And for the full LOL, `xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --mode 3840x2160 --below
DP-1` works, but `xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --above eDP-1-1`
did not.

[Bug 1853381] [NEW] Using HDMI output breaks displayport permanently

2019-11-20 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

If I have a thunderbolt monitor, it works fine-ish, most of the time,
and I can connect, disconnect, etc.

If EVER I connect to an HDMI monitor, it connects and will disconnect,
but then displayport NEVER WORKS AGAIN until I reboot the laptop.

After using and disconnecting HDMI:

shevek@starling:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 32767 x 32767

   2560x1440 59.9959.9959.9659.95
(etc)

BUT:
+ xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --above eDP-1-1
xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

and then the screen goes blank. And now I have to reboot again, which is kind
of meh because of #1852797 the laptop crashes every day or two anyway on 19.10
where it didn't crash on 19.04 but ... still a pain.

driver-430.

[Bug 1852797] [NEW] Hangs on suspend/resume

2019-11-15 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

About 1 time in 5 the system either fails to suspend or fails to resume.

Problem introduced by update to 19.10, where mem sleep at least works
(sometimes).

19.04 couldn't actually get into mem sleep at all. It just ended up in
some medium-power state from which it could (usually) resume.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2019-07-25 Thread Shevek
This change has made the system effectively inappropriate for use in a
business situation where mistakes are to be avoided. In the old system,
searching within a folder for a file to send to a client would only list
files from that folder. Now, file-open and so on show me files from
ANYWHERE ON THE SYSTEM FOR ANY CLIENT WHATSOEVER, leaving the user a
single mis-click away from a GDPR violation. Choosing a folder should
set a boundary on the files displayed. If I want search, I'll search.

[Bug 1687722] Re: lightdm should not have a pulseaudio config

2017-07-11 Thread Shevek
@robert-ancell Go on, give us a clue. Who _should_ we report this to?
We've gotten so far as to figure out WHY volume mutes when the screen
locks, which is frankly killer for any RT AV work, and now I'm lost in
the maze of twisty microservices, all alike.

I'm just a user here, yet I've diagnosed the issue, and taken the plunge
of reporting a bug to the monster that is Launchpad in the full
expectation that in a year or so I'll get an email telling me that
nobody gave a damn, and the bot has closed it. But here is an unrivaled
opportunity to do better.

[Bug 1687722] [NEW] lightdm should not have a pulseaudio config

2017-05-02 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

If the directory /var/lib/lightdm/.config/pulse exists, then whenever
the screen goes blank, the sound volume changes, mutes, or takes on some
other random parameters specified by this file. It does not reset on
unlocking the screen. This is an extraordinarily dumb behaviour which
can be temporarily remedied by deleting that directory, or swapping out
lightdm for xscreensaver.

Please make sure that lightdm cannot write a pulse config file, or that
consolekit or whatever for pulseaudio does not use system users as
sources for parameters, and so forth.

[Bug 1440891] Re: xbacklight doesn'twork with modesetting driver

2016-07-25 Thread Shevek
When I raised this, I was running Trusty, and the intel driver didn't
work but the modesetting driver did. Now I'm running Xenial, and the
intel driver mostly works, and modesetting does not, so I can no longer
test.

[Bug 1605687] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.13-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-07-25 Thread Shevek
@cks You are correct, I also have the mysql service disabled, which
explains the behaviour of rc.d. Editing the postinst script to use
service instead of invoke-rc.d did fix it, though.

2016-07-24 Thread Shevek
When I say "invoke-rc.d is not working", I mean that a service status on
the service suggests that invoke-rc.d did nothing whatsoever. No errors,
nothing. The mysql service didn't even notice that invoke-rc.d had been
run.

2016-07-24 Thread Shevek
The problem is that invoke-rc.d is not invoking mysql's start-stop
script properly. Swapping 'invoke-rc.d' for 'service' in invoke() makes
the script succeed. My system is now correctly configured.

[Bug 1598638] [NEW] Using secondary monitors with modesetting driver causes system crash

2016-07-03 Thread Shevek
Public bug reported:

Setup:
1. Use modesetting driver for X11.
2. Enable a secondary monitor, either VGA, HDMI or DisplayPort.

Observe:
a. Screen flickers, loses hsync, goes weird every few seconds.
b. After a few minutes, system freezes, no logs, no recovery, no nothing, but
display still on screen.

Workaround:
Switching to intel driver system still crashes, but less often, and differently.

[Bug 1434351] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-01-30 Thread Shevek
I'm still running 4.4.0 and the Intel driver is a complete shitshow even
though this bug has apparently receded. Stuff's appearing and vanishing
all over the place.

I have 32Gb and 64Gb SanDisk cards which work fine in the laptop AND the phone.

So this is just an incompatibility with this particular card and this
laptop - all other combinations work fine.

[Bug 1440422] Re: No hardware mouse cursor with modesetting X driver

2016-01-22 Thread Shevek
Both the intel and the modesetting driver are stable in 4.2
4.0 wouldn't boot because it couldn't deal with (multiple) encrypted disks via
crypttab
I went back to trying X servers again in an attempt to see whether there was
any correlation with #1535426
It may have been fixed in a later 3.19 but couldn't test due to #1386005 but
having solved that, I may now test a 3.19 again with the new BIOS.

[Bug 1535426] Re: CPU runs at high speed after upgrade

2016-01-20 Thread Shevek
Tried switching to 3.19 kernel - still high speed.
Tried switching to intel X driver instead of modesetting: CPU still runs at
high speed.

The only changes I haven't backed out are:
a) The Ubuntu 15.10 userland.
b) The BIOS update from 1.07 to 1.10.

With absolutely quiescent system, under modesetting driver, CPU will
settle at 800MHz, but wiggling the mouse or outputting to an xterm
causes the CPU speed to rise. Under intel driver, an apparently
absolutely quiescent system seems to use more CPU than under
modesetting.

powertop is reporting power usage between 12 and 26 W, whereas
previously with 15.04 I had power usage of 5-8W.

Please help, this is killing me. No battery = no computer.

The following things do NOT seem to have any effect:

* Plugging in or removing external power.

BIOS settings are for battery optimized, balanced performance.
Everything is as expected.

[Bug 1535426] Re: CPU runs at high speed after upgrade

2016-01-20 Thread Shevek
It "feels" as if the system is just too aggressive at ramping up CPU
speed in response to demand? Is this a tuneable parameter? Really, for a
desktop, something should be on a run queue for a couple of dozen ms
before speed ramps up, and with a loadavg of close to zero, that
shouldn't move the needle on this system?

The unnamed usb device is the fingerprint reader, which I am not using

not reduce the 8.11W used by thinkpad_acpi, and anyway, i'm somewhat
suspicious of that assignment of power consumption.

[Bug 1535426] Re: CPU runs at high speed after upgrade

2016-01-20 Thread Shevek
More powertop. It's clearly misreporting, and I'm fairly sure the
outstanding power must be going into the CPU, as that's the part of the
system that's physically hot to the touch.

Power est. Usage Events/sCategory Description
  4.21 W 15.2% Device Display backlight
  2.32 W100.0% Device Radio device:
thinkpad_acpi

(iwlwifi)
  278 mW 32.9 ms/s 18.4Process
/usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird

Also, this data implies that my backlight has a maximum power of 28
watts, which is false. It's about 5, measured on a nonbroken kernel/bios
/driver-set.

2016-01-19 Thread Shevek
Workaround from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/1500751
comment #68 confirmed correct and working. Also, bug not present in
Ubuntu Wiy for 4.2.x kernels due to i915 driver being in an appropriate
directory. However, intel_pstate driver in Wily AFU'd, so you still have
to apply the fix and run an old kernel if you actually want a working
computer.

[Bug 1535426] Re: CPU runs at high speed after upgrade

2016-01-18 Thread Shevek
Note, it's not continuously at max speed, it's varying between 2.9GHz
and 3.2GHz. But it never slows down. My load average is very low.

Also related?
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90421
https://askubuntu.com/questions/582805/high-cpu-frequency-at-idle

Workaround from that bug: Force low power state:

shevek@raven:/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate$ cpupower frequency-info
analyzing CPU 0:
  driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
  maximum transition latency: 0.97 ms.
  hardware limits: 500 MHz - 3.20 GHz
  available cpufreq governors: performance, powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 500 MHz and 2.80 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
  within this range.
current CPU frequency is 3.19 GHz.
  boost state support:
Supported: yes
Active: yes
shevek@raven:/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate$ sudo cpupower frequency-set
-g powersave
Setting cpu: 0
Setting cpu: 1
Setting cpu: 2
Setting cpu: 3

[Bug 1435070] Re: Thinkpad T550: Broadwell with Intel HD5500 powers off randomly

2015-09-29 Thread Shevek
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

In the first two weeks of owning a Broadwell T550, I have suffered about
two dozen abrupt power-offs. This has happened:

  a) While resuming from suspend.
  b) While in normal operation and just moving the mouse.
  c) While switching from X to console by pressing ctrl-alt-F1.

There was no kernel panic, no log files, just an abrupt power-off.

In conjunction with several other HD5500 issues, I am starting to
suspect the intel video driver, and have switched to the modesetting
driver. Setting the Intel driver to use AccelMethod: none made the
system more reliable but did not eliminate crashes.

Workaround: Put the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

  Identifier "intel"
  Driver "modesetting"

[Bug 1418260] Re: nm-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in add_menu_item()

2015-07-10 Thread Shevek
I have an LTE WWAN; these things are somewhat asynchronous, so the
diagnosis doesn't surprise me. It is important to test that when the
WWAN _does_ finally become available, it will work, e.g. boot the laptop
in an area with no LTE signal, then walk to civilization.

[Bug 1440422] Re: No hardware mouse cursor with modesetting X driver

2015-04-04 Thread Shevek
Mouse cursor was still active, because system has touchscreen, and using
that works, and if I know where the invisible mouse cursor is, moving
a regular mouse gives me hover (etc) effects. Just the mouse cursor
isn't rendered.

Adding linux as it was the kernel upgrade which caused the breakage.
Adding xorg-xserver and xorg-xserver-video-modesetting as the modesetting

[Bug 1434214] Re: Application restart style cannot be set to 'Never'

I checked that before I raised the issue. There's no Skype in there.
That's why I assumed this had to be from session saving. The only place
Skype appears in xfce4-session-settings is in Session, where I can't
set restart to Never.
