[ubuntu-in] how to restore grub for ubuntu 12.04

2013-02-22 Thread Sriranga(78yrsold)
Experts,

I had installed 12.04 within winXP using wubi.exe - Due to some problem -
I had re-installed WinxP by using fixmbr and fixboot.
now grub for ubuntu 12.04 has gone.

Without re-installing ubuntu 12.04, is it possible to restore grub ? If so
kindly guide me step by step procedure
to be followed. I have CD for 12.10 and not for 12.04 - since it was
installed thro'wubi.exe -

With Best Wishes,

I have a MBP 5,2, and am hesitating to even attempt the 12.04
installation for the same reason. But I have recently gotten a new imac
for our home office, and installed Parallels on it. You may already be
familiar with Parallels-- it is probably the most widely used software
these days for running operating systems virtually in OSX. I am using
both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 virtually on OSX, via Parallels. It
works great, and offers tremendous advantages. Just imagine: all the
benefits of three OS's (OSX, Win 7, Ubuntu 12.04) at the same time with
no rebooting! (I should emphasize here that I am a long-time Ubuntu
user, and of the three OS's, for many reasons prefer Ubuntu. But there
are still today some tasks that are best addressed in Win, for example
relational databases in MS Access-- still no comparison anywhere else. I
am waiting and very much looking forward to the day when good relational
DB software is available in Ubuntu :-) )

So this is just one option for you. If you install Parallels on OSX,
then 12.04 will install in Parallels without any issue at all. You'll
have your 12.04 installed and running in 20 minutes.

As far as I know, Parallels is only for use on Apple machines. So if you
don't use Apple, this software is not for you. But if you wish to know

Dear Prasad,
Thanks for the valuable guidance
Reproduced the extract of help received from Sri OMshivaprakash earlier
than yours for your information.

*Please install ibus-m17n package*
*Once that is done, in Language Support - select ibus as the input method*
*Run ibus-setup command and add required keyboard layouts in second tab
(kn-itrans, inscript etc)*

Anyway Solved the problem. I am using kn-itrans -which is phonetic
keyboard just like barahaIME. Thanks to all.

 Hi

Some of you may be aware of this stream of unofficial ubuntu versions,
called Ultimate edition. Its a one stop distro for those who want
everything and don't want to spend time configuring everything.

Its well packaged, has tonnes of additional nautilus scripts and has
 tonnes of software preloaded.

The GUI themes are , in the recent version, very dark, am not sure under
what conditions these are used , possibly in brightly lit rooms using very
bright monitors, but these can be changed.

I have been using this stream since quite a while (about 3 years) and find
 it stable and very productive.

An article about is pasted below

 http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ultimate-Edition-3-4-Is-Based-on-Ubuntu-12-04-LTS-278500.shtml

TheeMahn proudly announced this past weekend that the Ultimate Edition 3.4
LTS operating system is now available for download on mirrors worldwide.

Ultimate Edition 3.4 is now based on Canonical's Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise
Pangolin) operating system, which makes it a Long Term Support release.

Packed with a new GTK3 theme, a comprehensive set of apps, all the
updates from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, new initrd, rebuilt vmlinuz, and a rock
 solid GNOME 3 desktop environment.

I have really placed thought and diligence into what this product is.
This is no Ultimate Edition 3.2, while I had initial good feed back on. I
developed Ultimate Edition 3.2 to showcase new and upcoming technologies,
 not as a stable platform.

Ultimate Edition 3.4 takes things to a whole new level. It was developed
with stability in mind, sorry KDE users, we will catch you in Ultmate
Edition 3.5. This O/S will be my primary O/S for some time to come. That
statement alone says alot for my feeling on this operating system, the
 official release announcement stated.

Ultimate Edition 3.4 is distributed as Live DVD ISO images for both 32-bit
and 64-bit architectures, containing Unity, Cinnamon, XBMC, GNOME Classic,
GNOME 3 with GNOME Shell, and the GNOME Fallback sessions.

 About Ultimate Edition

Created by TheeMahn, Ultimate Edition is a Linux distribution based on
Canonical's Ubuntu operating system. It comes bundled with a lot more apps
and tools than Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and it also has a very unique and
 somewhat over-the-top visual style.

Ultimate Edition was previously known as Ubuntu Ultimate, but started life
as Ubuntu Christmas Edition. There is also a specialized version, the
Ultimate Edition Gamers, which includes all the applications from the
Ultimate Edition and many Linux games.

The -c is the option for checking for bad blocks..

For partition use cfdisk /dev/sda (if /dev/sda is the drive you want to
 partition.

You can also use fdisk or gparted (graphics)

 Hope this helps.

[ubuntu-in] How to merge two separate OS 10.04 and 10.10

2011-06-12 Thread Sriranga(78yrsold)
I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 on one of drive. when tried to install
ubuntu10.10 on the
old ubuntu 10.04, unfortunately instead of upgrading from Ubuntu10.04 to
Ubuntu10.10,
separately installed on another drive or partittion. Thus i have two ubuntu
10.04 and ubuntu 10.10. Now I want to merge by deleting the old ubuntu 10.04
with ubuntu 10.10. Unable to know on which drives both ubuntu were
installed. . I have Winxp which is working fine.

Question is how to merge the space used by Ubuntu 10.04 with Ubuntu 10.10 so
that I can have more
space in home of ubuntu 10.10 - (after uninstalled 10.04)
Since I am newbie to linux, I seek valuable guidance for which i shall be
thankful to you.

Have 1-2 community members at the store to demo Ubuntu.
Have them wear Ubuntu T-Shirts so people perceive it to be

Offer basic installation for free and charge for additional services.

I am thinking we should offer similar services to what people are used

Ubuntu cannot get success (in India) without the project like DebBundle

Ubuntu seems to be one of the most popular linux distros in India.
It's funny how Ubuntu didn't need DebBundle to gain that popularity.

I do not know much about DebBundle. I just checked what it tries to
 achieve. I agree with Narendra
Ubuntu is the most popular linux distro in India.
But this is not the level of popularity we should be satisfied with !
It should be talking like 10-20% of market share of OS, availability at
every nook and corner of the country and ability to get installed and
supported by an average hardware vendor in India.

Now dependency on internet and difficulty in learning curve to use
solutions like apt-on-cd makes it difficult.

[ubuntu-in] Fwd: Kannada OCR

Subject: Kannada OCR
To: fsmk-disc...@lists.fsmk.in

 Hello group members,

Kannada is not having an OCR program to convert scanned images to text to
further edit and this lack is making people to type full text for editing
purposes. The advantages of OCR program need not be detailed for s/w people,
but its requirement and use in enriching the language by putting the large
quantity of the literature in text format on the web cannot be exaggerated.

Having said the above I want to point out that there is a ray of hope as a
free s/w Tesseract (http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/) is a program
which can be trained for any language. This feature has to be exploited and
a service to Kannada can be rendered by those who are knowledgeable in s/w
and love their language.

There is a very small group which is doing this work in bits. This group
would like to invite more people to join.

Thanks,

Loads much quicker that Open Office definitely, and feels lighter than it.

 on this page it says
Important notice: to install LibreOffice you must remove OpenOffice so
you cannot have both in the same time!

 any idea why

I have installed from deb files directly - the desktop integration is
also part of the deb's and right now both are functioning -

 so am curious

Linux, I want know more about it. This is the reason which brought me here.

 Hi Ponkumaran,

If you want to learn how to use Ubuntu from a non-technical point of view,
I would recommend reading Ubuntu Manual. I know it hasn't been updated for
the latest release, but still it isn't that Ubuntu has completely changed in
one release. You can buy the hard copy book or download the soft copy of the
 book for free

Re: [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Install vs Live

2010-10-07 Thread Sriranga(78yrsold)
Have you tried with wube.exe (installing within the WinxP as part of its
software) It is very fast than live/installing
which I had experienced long back at the time of installing ubuntu 9.04.
