[Bug 506488] [NEW] regression on latest update: edge scrolling no longer works on trackpad

2010-01-12 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I updated Karmic just now, after not having done so for several weeks.

After rebooting after the update, and logging back in, I find that edge-
scrolling on the laptop's touchpad no longer works. Nor does tap-in-
corners.

It was working fine before this update -- Karmic as of the start of
December.

[Bug 482557] [NEW] regression in logitech dinovo edge keyboard in karmic update

2009-11-14 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Using the released version of Karmic, my Logitech dinovo edge keyboard
worked fine.

Now, after a few Karmic updates, it no longer works properly. This
keyboard uses bluetooth to some bluetooth adapter that I have plugged
into a USB port. Specifically, if I turn off the keyboard's power then
back on again, pressing keys or using the mouse that is embedded in the
keyboard does nothing. If I use another keyboard to switch to a text
VT, then back to VT7, then the logitech keyboard works again.

The same thing happens if I leave the keyboard unused for a long time,
say overnight.

This was working fine in the Karmic release, so I think this is a
regression in one of the updates since release.

[Bug 288401] Re: Various wireless drivers don't see !US wireless channels on UK laptop [intrepid regression]

2009-10-14 Thread Steve Alexander
@Max Bowsher

I see infocreator has filed bug 363379, as you requested. However, the
bug has had no comments or status changes.

I'm seeing the same problem, so I'm keen to see a resolution, and happy
to test any fixes or workarounds.

Meanwhile, I'm adding this comment so that any readers can easily find
the bug infocreator filed from this bug.

[Bug 401691] Re: move to main

2009-08-27 Thread Steve Alexander
I'm still talking with upstream. Based on that, I am optimistic that
Erlang will use standard zlib libraries well in time for 10.04. Elliot
has been having a conversation about the test suite, and he's optimistic
that it will be available in time for 10.04 also.

While this means that Erlang for 9.10 would use a patched zlib, and
would have no test suite, the situation will improve dramatically for
10.04.

[Bug 418521] [NEW] On upgrade, X did not start because nvidia module is not available

2009-08-25 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-common

I run the development version of Karmic on my 64 bit machine.

First thing this morning, my machine was running with nvidia accelerated
graphics.

Later today I updated with apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade.

The upgrade appeared to go okay. I restarted the machine. It loaded up
into a text console.

I logged in, and tried startx. It failed. I looked in xorg.conf, and
commented out the line saying to use a nvidia driver. After this,
startx worked but with basic graphics (not accelerated).

I tried going to the Appearance Preferences menu and turning on
accelerated graphics. It asked me if it's okay to download a driver and
install it. I agreed to this, and something was downloaded and
installed. A confusing message implied I should restart the machine to
see accelerated graphics. I restarted, and was back in text mode with
startx not starting.

sudo modprobe nvidia gives me the response FATAL: Module nvidia not
found.

I spoke with StevenK on #ubuntu-devel, and he asked me to file this bug.

[Bug 406837] [NEW] options module crashes, thus cannot suspend my vaio vgn-tz190n

2009-07-30 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

The confusingly named options module, that is for integrated GSM
modems connected via USB, crashes on start-up. So, suspend and
hibernate do not work, because the four options processes cannot be
refrigerated.

Blacklisting options allows the machine to suspend and resume with
sudo pm-suspend.

Even when options is blacklisted, gnome power manager does not present
buttons to suspend or hibernate. I'll file a bug on gnome power manager
about this.

The machine is a sony vaio VGN-TZ190N, with the latest dev version of
Karmic.

[Bug 406842] [NEW] I can use pm-suspend to suspend, but suspend and hibernate buttons don't show up

2009-07-30 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In bug 406837 I reported needing to blacklist the confusingly-named
options module to get suspend working on my laptop on the latest
karmic. Although I can now use pm-suspend to suspend the machine, the
suspend and hibernate buttons are missing from the shut down menu.
The only options I have are to shut down or restart.

The machine is capable of suspending, so I should be offered a button to
do that.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse dones not work anymore

2009-07-23 Thread Steve Alexander
My Logitech DiNovo Edge keyboard needed to be removed from the
bluetooth-properties application, and reassociated, several times a day
when I was using Jaunty.

I recently updated to the in-progress Karmic release, and it works fine.

[Bug 192935] Re: Suspend on hardy worked last week on Sony VGN-TZ190N, doesn't work now

2009-07-20 Thread Steve Alexander
After suspend and hibernate working fine with Jaunty on my VGN-TZ190N
laptop, I upgraded it to Karmic (current development), and now suspend
and hibernate don't work.

When I ask the machine to suspend, the screen goes blank for a minute or
two, then comes right back with the enter your password to clear the
screensaver prompt.

[Bug 400718] [NEW] Alt key in Compiz does not work when Alt is mapped to Right Win, Super to Menu selected

2009-07-17 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

To reproduce, log into a Karmic GNOME desktop with compiz turned on.

Open a terminal window, and use alt-tab. A window switcher is
activated.

Go into the keyboard preferences applet, in the Layouts tab choose the
Layout Options button. In Alt/Win key behaviour, change it from
Default to Alt is mapped to Right Win, Super to Menu.

Try alt-tab again. No window switcher is activated. Try alt+win+tab.
A window switcher is activated. Try alt+F1. No panel menu is
activated. Try alt+win+F1. The panel menu is activated. Same for
switching desktops using the keyboard.

Now, restore that setting to Default, and see that the keyboard
shortcuts work as expected.

If you had the Alt is mapped to Right Win, Super to Menu setting set
when you logged in, simply changing it is not enough to get alt-tab
behaviour back to normal; you need to log out and log back in after
returning the setting to Default.

This appears to be a similar problem to the invalid bug 368661.

A similar bug is reported here:

[Bug 338271] Re: Sony Vaio integrated camera doesn't work with Jaunty

2009-05-26 Thread Steve Alexander
@sconklin: Thanks for taking a look at this, Steve. There's a PPA of a
kernel module for this camera here:

  https://launchpad.net/~intuitivenipple/+ppa-packages

The package is r5u870-dkms.

I can modprobe r5u870, and nothing appears in /var/log/messages.
However, when I run 'cheese', it doesn't find the camera. There is
nothing at /dev/video.

If I run camorama, I get an error dialog:

Error (camorama): Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0).
  Please check connection.

[Bug 364029] [NEW] boots into busybox with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel.

2009-04-20 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

I just updated all the packages on my jaunty system to the latest ones,
and rebooted my Dell X1. It rebooted into busybox, with a message like:

Boot args (cat /proc/cmd line)
check root delay = (did the system wait long enough ? )
check root = (did the system wait for the right device ? )
Missing Modules ( cat /proc/modules ; ls /dev )
ALERT /dev/disk/by-uuid/(some uuid) does not exist. Dropping to a Shell !

When I reboot and choose the previous kernel, 2.6.28-9-generic, it boots
as normal.

So, I think something broke in 2.6.28-11-generic to cause this.

[Bug 347280] Re: Cannot see access point with Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

2009-03-27 Thread Steve Alexander
After googling a lot, I think this is something to do with the
regulatory domain for 80211, crda, and all that stuff. That is, I think
the AP may be running on a channel that is legal in the EU, but not in
the default regulatory domain.

I can't figure out how to tell the kernel that my laptop is in the EU,
however, to verify this.

[Bug 347831] [NEW] I need to set up my logitech dinovo edge bluetooth keyboard on each restart

2009-03-24 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

I just installed Jaunty on my desktop machine. I'm seeing a regression
since 8.10.

When I start it up, I cannot use my bluetooth logitech dinovo edge
keyboard to log into the machine. So, I use a regular keyboard. When
I'm logged in, the dinovo edge still doesn't work, neither keyboard or
mousepad. I look in the System-Preferences-Bluetooth application, and
the keyboard is listed there. The plug icon is flashing on and off,
kind of irregularly.

If I remove the keyboard from the Bluetooth application, then re-add it
by putting the keyboard into associate with a new adapter mode, then
typing the PIN into the keyboard, then after that it works perfectly.

Then, next time I start up the machine, the keyboard doesn't work any
more, and I need to repeat the whole thing.

All of this was fine in 8.10. After a small pause, I could log in using
the dinovo edge, and it worked fine while logged in.

[Bug 339982] [NEW] X hangs for no apparent reason

2009-03-09 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

I'm running jaunty on my Sony Vaio TZ190N.

Three times in the last two weeks I have experienced a total GUI hang.
The screen becomes totally frozen, although the mouse will still move.
The keyboard does not respond to ctrl+alt+2 (for example) to switch to a
console.

There is nothing of note in /var/log/messages or dmesg or .xsession-
errors or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

It is still possible to ssh into the machine while it is in this state.
Killing compiz and gnome-related processes does nothing to the state of
the screen. Killing X with -9 as root caused the screen to be
corrupted, and the computer to entirely freeze. It was no longer
pingable after that.

After a hard reset, the computer was usable again.

[Bug 315422] [NEW] Intrepid Compiz does not work on vaio tz190n

2009-01-09 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Compiz worked fine in hardy. Doesn't work in intrepid. When I try to
turn it on from System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects, and
choose normal, I see a dialog saying searching for additional
drivers, then the screen visibly updates for a couple of seconds as
window decorations disappear and reappear, then I see a dialog saying
Desktop effects could not be enabled [ok]. I click on ok, and the
effects level is back to None.

[Bug 303126] [NEW] Cannot use ctrl in Gimp when locate pointer option is set

2008-11-28 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

I went into Mouse Preferences in the Ubuntu System-Preferences menu,
and under Locate Pointer, turned on the option for Show position of
pointer when the Control key is pressed.

When I press and release the ctrl key, the area around the mouse
shimmers with orange circles.

Next, I run Gimp. I open an image. When I'm viewing the image, I
choose the magnifying glass tool to zoom. I can zoom in by clicking the
mouse in the image. Usually, I'd hold ctrl and click the mouse to zoom
out. On holding down ctrl, the + symbol by the magnifying glass
cursor changes to a - symbol.

This works correctly when I don't have the show position of pointer
option set. But when I do have it set, Gimp does not respond to my
pressing the ctrl key.

However, Gimp does respond to my pressing the ctrl key as expected if I
also have the alt or shift keys held down.

[Bug 175166] Re: click the icon instruction dangerously confusing

2008-11-27 Thread Steve Alexander
I don't understand why this is a wishlist bug rather than a a bug of
higher importance. The result of a usability problem is that probably
many people are not receiving security updates.

If this were a pure software bug that was preventing people receiving
security updates, it would surely be rated high or critical.
Usability bugs that cause security issues should be treated the same.

[Bug 191649] Re: kernel panic on resume

2008-11-03 Thread Steve Alexander
I tried this again on Intrepid with today's updates.

The machine hibernates very successfully.

The machine suspends. On resume, the machine starts up (I can hear fans
and perhaps the hard disk), but the monitor stays asleep, and the
USB/Bluetooth keyboard remains disconnected, like its dongle is not
powered up.

I'll try disabling desktop effects, and see if that makes suspend work.

2008-11-03 Thread Steve Alexander
I turned off visual effects, and the behaviour on suspending was exactly
the same -- the machine suspends, and on resuming, the fans and hard
disk start up, but the screen and keyboard do not function. So, I have
no idea whether there's a kernel panic or what, because I can't see the
screen.

[Bug 192935] Re: Suspend on hardy worked last week on Sony VGN-TZ190N, doesn't work now

2008-08-18 Thread Steve Alexander
Suspend works for my with Hardy and my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ190N.

I had to do this:
In /etc/pm/config.d/unload_modules, have the text: SUSPEND_MODULES=ehci_hcd
In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, add the line: blacklist uvcvideo

I tried putting uvcvideo in SUSPEND_MODULES, both before and after
ehci_hcd, but my machine wouldn't suspend properly when I did that.

[Bug 192935] [NEW] Suspend on hardy worked last week on Sony VGN-TZ190N, doesn't work now

2008-02-18 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

I'm running 32 bit Hardy on my Sony laptop (VGN-TZ190N).

Last week, suspend to ram worked fine. I was very happy, because
suspend to ram had not worked on the Gutsy final release (although it
had done so in an earlier milestone release).

I updated, and now suspend to ram does not work. The screen goes blank,
and I see a text cursor in the top left. The computer remains this way
until it runs out of power, or I turn it off by hand.

[Bug 192096] [NEW] Applications/Places/System menu is not flush to top of screen

2008-02-15 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

This is on today's Hardy, with the gnome panel in the default position
at the top of my screen.

I want to use the Applications menu, so I throw my mouse cursor to the
top of the screen, so the cursor is flush with the top of the screen,
and kind of covering the lic of Applications. I click, but nothing
happens.

What should happen is that the menu opens.

Now, if I move the cursor 2 pixels down, and click, then the menu opens.

The reason that the active area should be flush to the top of the screen
is well described in the HCI literature as Fitt's Law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitt%27s_law

Edges (e.g. the menubar in Mac OS) and corners of the computer display
(e.g. Start button in Windows XP) are particularly easy to acquire
because the pointer remains at the screen edge regardless of how much
further the mouse is moved, thus can be considered as having infinite
width.

As it is, I need to take far too much care when I want to open these
menus in Ubuntu.

[Bug 175166] click the icon instruction dangerously confusing

2007-12-09 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

I just visited a friend of mine. She's not all that technically
oriented. I installed Ubuntu on her laptop for her a while ago, and
she's very happy with it.

Now, 6 months later, I visited her house, and watched her start up the
computer and use it to browse a website.

She started it up, and logged in.

After login, the panel etc. loaded up. There's a white-on-orange star
in the panel to indicate that there are software updates. Attached to
this is a floating speech-bubble style notification.

The notification contains an icon, and some text. The text says
something like there are important updates to apply to your system.
click the icon to install them.

I watched my friend apparently dismiss the notification, and continue
with loading up firefox. I said wait a minute -- those are important
updates. they probably include security updates. you should apply
them. She replied I keep trying to, but it never works. It says to
click the icon, so I do, and then the box disappears and the system
doesn't do anything about it.

She'd been clicking the large icon in the notification balloon. Not the
icon in the panel.

So, all this time, she'd never been getting updates.

This is a serious security/usability issue. I'm checking the security
vulnerability box, because the usability error probably means many
people out there are not keeping their system up to date, despite their
best intentions.

It would probably be fixable by removing the wrong icon from the
notification balloon. Or by making that icon actually work to launch
update manager.

[Bug 151706] need to add options snd-hda-intel model=auto to alsa-base on Sony Vaio VGN-TZ190N

Public bug reported:

With Gutsy, sound does not work on my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ190N laptop,

  options snd-hda-intel model=auto

[Bug 41427] Re: slow keys can turn on surreptitiously cause confusion.

2007-09-27 Thread Steve Alexander
In feisty, a warning box appears. However, there are problems with it:

 1. the warning box is not a normal window, so it is not visible with a
task button.

 2. for some reason, it often appears underneath the currently focused
window, and that combined with the lack of a task button makes it
entirely invisible.

 3. slow keys gets activated somehow even though the dialog is displayed
and hasn't been okayed.

So, when I find I've accidentally turned on slow keys, I'll later on
find this hidden dialog asking me if I want to enable it.

I think there are a few things broken here. The most useful change
would be to make the dialog asking if I want to turn on slow keys, to
make it a proper application window. Then to ensure that slow keys is
not turned on until that dialog is okayed.

[Bug 130659] Re: Workspaces on Gutsy switch incorrectly using Compiz with left over Feisty settings

2007-09-26 Thread Steve Alexander
I had this similar situation where ctrl+alt+left would jump two
workspaces to the left each time. Similarly for right.

I fixed it by going to gconf-editor,
/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options, and removing the value 'wall'
from the key 'active_plugins'.

I'm guessing this is a conflict between wall and rotate handling the
left_key and right_key keys.

I noticed this because when I changed the value of left_key in wall,
it also changed rotate_left_key in rotate.

I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm glad I have this fixed.

[Bug 139599] move to another workspace menu item for a window does nothing

2007-09-14 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Today's latest Gutsy, using standard desktop effects.

When I right-click a window title, I get a menu. The menu has an option
Move to another Workspace, which has its own submenu listing
workspaces.

When I choose this for a window, and try to move it to another desktop,
nothing happens. The window stays on the desktop it is currently on.

Expected behaviour is that the window moves to the desktop I have
selected from the submenu.

[Bug 133397] Re: [iwl4965] [Gutsy] wireless-connection not ready on start

2007-09-14 Thread Steve Alexander
I killed NetworkManagerDispatcher and nm-applet.

There was no process NetworkManager.

I ran the commands:

  # iwconfig wlan0 essid ANY
  # watch iwconfig wlan0 | grep Access

I watched for 10 minutes, wlan0 did not associate itself with an access
point.

Then I ran this, and manually reconnected:

# killall dhclient ; killall dhclient3 ; rmmod iwl4965 mac80211
cfg80211 ; modprobe iwl4965; modprobe mac80211 ; modprobe cfg80211 ;
sleep 1 ; ifconfig wlan0 up ; sleep 1; iwconfig wlan0 essid ESSID-OF-AP
; dhclient wlan0

Then I added this comment :-)

[Bug 138878] Firefox plugin finder hangs while modal dialog appears on different workspace

2007-09-11 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I'm using the latest gutsy, 32 bit intel.

I had installed gnash already.

I'm using the medium level of desktop effects, with firefox on
workspace 3.

I used firefox to go to a web site with a flash movie, and clicked where
the movie would be shown.

The computer asked me if I'd like to install a plugin, and if I'd like
gnash or adobe flash.

I chose gnash and pressed next. Then, both firefox and that dialog with
the next button appeared to freeze up. Nothing happened for a long
while.

Eventually, I noticed on workspace 1, a modal dialog telling me the
changes have been applied, and asking me to close that window.

I close the window using the 'close' button, and back on workspace 3,
the plugin finder service window is working again.

I press finish on that window, and the firefox page re-renders, this
time with the flash content available.

The bug is that the modal dialog appeared on desktop 1, whereas firefox
was on workspace 3. So, I was waiting for the installation of the
plugin to finish, watching workspace 3. It didn't occur to me to go and
look on different workspaces to find the dialog to say yes, I confirm
that the process can be finished.

Actually, I don't really understand the value of that dialog -- all it
wanted me to do was click finished. The process would have been
smoother without that dialog at all. However, that would be another
usability enhancement bug rather than a more serious It looks like
firefox has crashed, even though it hasn't bug.

I think maybe this is what happened with bug 96929 (marked invalid).

killall dhclient ; killall dhclient3 ; rmmod iwl4965 mac80211 cfg80211

[Bug 136688] Re: suspend works on tribe 5, fails with updates since then, vaio TZ190N

2007-09-03 Thread Steve Alexander
Okay. I added 'set -x' on a new line immediately after the
'#!/bin/bash' line.

Then I ran sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force from a virtual terminal.
Various text appeared on the screen, then the screen went blank. After
several minutes, the screen remained blank, but the laptop was still not
suspended (power light glowing green, not pulsating yellow).

I could press num lock, and see the light go on and off.

I cut the power, and did a hard reset.

Next, in a virtual terminal, I ran sudo -s followed by
/etc/acpi/sleep.sh force /var/log/sleep.log.

Same behaviour as before (unsurprisingly). Hard reset, check the log
file. The only line in it is * Shutting down ALSA... ^[80G
^M^[74G[OK].

I try /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force 2 /var/log/sleep.log, and get 232
lines of log output, attached (with MAC addresses removed).

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 43233 ***

I saw the same issue on gutsy just now. I tried telling the date and
time applet to synchronize with internet servers. It couldn't find the
ntp package, but nonetheless seemed to be able to do an ntpdate call.

After, I tried to run apt-get update with sudo, and sudo would not run,
giving me the timestamp too far in the future error.

So, I was stuck, unable to change the time, as that would require
running sudo also.

[Bug 127005] my xserver crashed after unsuspend

2007-07-19 Thread Steve Alexander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-i810

I have a Dell X10 laptop running Ubuntu feisty.

I suspended the laptop. I unsuspended. Usually this works fine,
however, in this case, the screen remained blank for quite a while, even
though I pressed the shift key several times to bring up the enter your
password dialog.

So, I switched to vt4 with ctrl+alt+f4, then tried to switch back to
vt7. On vt7, I saw a blank screen with a few light coloured pixels of
noise in the top left.

Shortly after this, I couldn't see a video mode VT at all, and instead,
I saw a red text-mode message in a box telling me that my X server had
crashed. There were strange glyphs making up the border of this box.

I'll attach my Xorg.0.log file.

[Bug 41427] Re: slow keys can turn on surrepitiously cause confusion.

2007-05-18 Thread Steve Alexander
This just happened to me on feisty. The You held down the shift key
for 8 seconds, do you want to activate slow keys dialog was on my
screen, but hidden behind another window. The feature was activated,
and when I deactivated it, everything was back to normal.

My machine was not under heavy IO of any kind. I was watching a
responsive system monitor applet all the time.

I had not intentionally turned on slow keys, and I was very confused
as to why my keyboard was not working properly. I had spent 30 minutes
trying to load and unload USB kernel modules, suspend and hibernate, put
keyboard into raw mode and check it on a console etc.

The keyboard was working fine on a console. IMO, this is a pretty
serious bug.
