I think there is a major misconception: halt (or shutdown -h) will halt your PC whereas poweroff (or shutdown -P) will power it off. I bi-sected xserver-xorg-video-intel (as available at git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-xorg/driver/xserver-xorg-video-intel, which is what the Ubuntu packages are based on). The first bad commit is: commit 2608a367acba7247e50754c3daeed09ba2e97d05 Author: Chris Wilson ch...@chris-wilson.co.uk Date: Mon Jul 11 16:28:15 2011 +0100 dri: Prevent abuse of the Resource database The Resource database is only designed to store a single value for a particular type associated with an XID. Due to the asynchronous nature of the vblank/flip requests, we would often associate multiple frame events with a particular drawable/client. Upon freeing the resource, we would not necessarily decouple the right value, leaving a stale pointer behind. Later when the client disappeared, we would write through that stale pointer upsetting valgrind and causing memory corruption. MDK. Instead, we need to implement an extra layer for tracking multiple frames within a single Resource. In another attempt to further isolate the system parameters that trigger the issue, I set up a couple of minimal systems using various combinations of dmcrypt and raid1. In the meantime, I have also been able to reproduce the issue in a KVM virtual machine, i.e., it is not hardware-specific, but must probably affects suspend on any SMP system (but the probability may depend on the number of CPUs). [Bug 746860] Re: System sporadically freezes during suspend to RAM
I identified the faulty commit (using a git bisect): bd25f4dd6972755579d0ea50d1a5ace2e9b00d1a is the first bad commit commit bd25f4dd6972755579d0ea50d1a5ace2e9b00d1a Author: Arnd Bergmann a...@arndb.de Date: Sun Jul 11 15:34:05 2010 +0200 HID: hiddev: use usb_find_interface, get rid of BKL This removes the private hiddev_table in the usbhid driver and changes it to use usb_find_interface instead. The advantage is that we can avoid the race between usb_register_dev and usb_open and no longer need the big kernel lock. This doesn't introduce race condition -- the intf pointer could be invalidated only in hiddev_disconnect() through usb_deregister_dev(), but that will block on minor_rwsem and not actually remove the device until usb_open(). Public bug reported: Binary package hint: sysvinit Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 initscripts: Installed: 2.87dsf-4ubuntu19 Candidate: 2.87dsf-4ubuntu19 The init script /etc/init.d/halt does not declare any dependencies, which causes it to be inserted very early in the shutdown sequence when recalculating the script order using insserv. [Bug 698160] Re: Natty: Kernel 2.6.37 - suspend broken
I reproduced the issue with a kernel that has verbose PM debugging compiled in (but apart from that does not differ from the Ubuntu 2.6.38-7.35 one). The resulting dmesg output is attached, but the fingerprinting isn't very helpful: May 15 17:45:17 andromeda kernel: [2.187047] Magic number: 0:400:740 May 15 17:45:17 andromeda kernel: [2.187049] hash matches /raid/home/tg/kernel-2.6.38/source/drivers/base/power/main.c:577 I also configured syslog to print all kernel messages to tty1 (as that is the terminal that stays active when the issue happens), but unfortunately the screen contains less information than the log file as it ends ~ 1 sec before the log file. ** Attachment added: pmtrace.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/698160/+attachment/1925359/+files/pmtrace.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/698160 Title: Natty: Kernel 2.6.37 - suspend broken -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 653242] [NEW] Panel puts ghost shadow on Desktop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace While I initially observed this bug on my Desktop PC running Kubuntu 10.04 + backported KDE 4.5.1 I am now able to reproduce it using the 10.10 release candidate running inside a VirtualBox VM. This rules out a graphics-driver-related issue. From time to time, after logging into my KDE session, the shadow that is usually drawn behind the Plasma Panel at the bottom of the screen appears detached from the panel in the upper left quadrant of the screen. My panel is set to auto-hide and the shadow appears and disappears when the panel shows and hides. To temporarily correct the issue (until the ghost shadow decides to show up again), either change the panel alignment from Center to Left to Center (but I guess any alignment change will do) or log off and log on again (while the latter comes with a certain probability that the issue will immediately pop up again). When inspecting the list of existent windows, one can actually spot a window, the dimensions of which correspond to the dimensions of the shadow. For an example, refer to the screenshot at: http://archive.ginkel.com/kde/snapshot-plasma-ghost.png The issue has already been reported upstream: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=251537 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: kdebase-workspace 4:4.5.1-0ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-22.33-generic 2.6.35.4 Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Fri Oct 1 22:10:17 2010 InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Release Candidate amd64 (20100928.3) PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: kdebase-workspace ** Affects: kdebase Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug maverick -- Panel puts ghost shadow on Desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/653242 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 579906] [NEW] Plymouth does not display bootsplash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth After upgrading from Karmic to Lucid my Kubuntu installation initially came up with plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text although kubuntu-desktop (and consequently plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo) were installed correctly. After having removed plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text I am unable to get any bootsplash to show. This happens with an Intel 945GME graphics controller. I am almost certain that the display is correctly initialized to graphics mode as the switchover to X happens seamlessly (i.e., the mouse cursor appears over the boot messages before kdm shows up). While working my way through the pm-utils scripts to better understand what is going on for an unrealated bug, I noticed that there actually is a pm-utils script, which unmutes PulseAudio on resume: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/01PulseAudio So, I guess, this qualifies as a pm-utils bug (and regression over Jaunty). ** Also affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Sound unmuted after suspend/resume cycle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477423 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 462240] Re: Karmic RC upgrade hangs while configuring bash
I guess that the following query caused the freeze (which I got when fixing the upgrade from the command line): Configuration file `/etc/bash.bashrc' == Modified (by you or by a script) since installation. == Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : background this process to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** bash.bashrc (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? Unfortunatelt, update-notifier-kde did not show prompt for this question. This happened for the upgrade of two separate systems, so I'd assume this is a common problem. ** Also affects: update-notifier-kde Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Karmic RC upgrade hangs while configuring bash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462240 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
