[Bug 1159513] Re: Banshee freezes on copying to iPod music which needs transcoding

2013-03-28 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Looking into banshee.log, the underlying problem seems to be the
following:

[Error 19:09:33.070] Cannot Convert File - GStreamer encountered a general
stream error.: gstbaseparse.c(3038): gst_base_parse_loop ():
/GstPipeline:pipeline/GstDecodeBin:decodebin/GstFlacParse:flacparse0:

[Bug 1159513] [NEW] Banshee freezes on copying to iPod music which needs transcoding

2013-03-24 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

After updating to raring, Banshee freezes each time I try to import to
an iPod any music file which needs transcoding (i.e., FLAC and OGG).
Importing music which doesn't need transcoding works, so the problem
seems to be with the transcoding process itself and not with the iPod
interaction.

I am able to transcode the files manually with SoundConverter, though I
usually need to start the process two or three times and I still get
spurious error messages (typically, the message says the output file
cannot be saved, although the output file IS correctly saved and it
plays back just fine).

This too is new since the upgrade. I do not know if the two problems are
related and if they indicate a deeper problem in the GStreamer stack.
Please let me know if there is any further testing that I can perform to
help assess the problem. Please also let me know if you wish me to
report separate bugs against SoundCoverter and/or GStreamer.

[Bug 851864] [NEW] Unity shell crashes on login

2011-09-16 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

At login, Unity fails to start, leaving me with just the top panel,
permanently showing the Desktop menus, and the Desktop itself, but no
launcher, no dash, no indicators and no keyboard shortcuts. The Desktop
itself works, for example I can create a folder, open it and then open a
file from Nautilus. Applications launched this way seem to work
correctly, but no window management function is available.

If I run compiz --replace in a terminal from a Unity 2D session, I get
this:

[Bug 845746] [NEW] Gwibber service autostarts when autostart is disabled

2011-09-09 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

gwibber-service always starts at login, even when the Start service at

[Bug 731786] Re: Upon first login, launcher gets in the way of maximized windows

I thought this one had been fixed. I'm no longer seeing this as of 3.6.8
(running 3.6.8-0ubuntu3 from the natty repositories right now). Please
let me know if you need more information on my setup.

I tested this and the issue as reported is fixed. I now get random
crashes in compiz while switching. I'll open a followup bug as soon as I
can collect some relevant information.

@Conrad, I already reported that as bug #736826, which has been fixed in

@Manoj: I'm running the current kernel and the bug is not fixed for me.

taw...@tylke:~$ uname -a
Linux tylke 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:20:59 UTC 2010 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Reading the quoted commit message, I get the impression that the fix is
specific for the Acer Aspire One.

2010-07-09 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
@AceLan Kao: I'm running on your patched kernel. I can confirm that the
bug is fixed for me, and I see no regressions so far. I will use it for
the whole day (it's morning here as I write this) and report back later.

Will you consider the patch for Maverick as well? I would gladly upgrade
to help test this.

Thanks again!

2010-07-08 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
I just found out that the discussion thread at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1495123 has some discussion, as
well as a link to a patch
(http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_TimelineX#Issues) and to
kernel packages including the mentioned patch.

The patch seems to work here. Would you please consider carrying it
until upstream finds a proper fix?

[Bug 579666] [NEW] Headphones jack, microphone jack don't work correctly on Acer Aspire 4820TG

2010-05-12 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

When I plug headphones, the internal speakers are muted as expected, but
no sound is produced through the headphones although the volume is set
at maximum.

Additionally, I can't get no sound from the microphone jack, although
the mixer settings are OK and the microphone is not muted.

I tried installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic, but the
issues are still present.

[Bug 578894] [NEW] Cannot detect AC adapter status and battery charge status on Acer Aspire 4820TG

2010-05-11 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

The system encounters an error while trying to read the status of the AC
adapter and, as a result, it behaves as if the AC adapter were plugged.
The relevant dmesg lines seem to be the following:

[0.944150] ACPI Error (psargs-0359): [\_PR_.CPU0._PPC] Namespace lookup
failure, AE_NOT_FOUND
[0.944156] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.ACAD._PSR] (Node 88013384d720), AE_NOT_FOUND
[0.944207] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, Error reading AC Adapter state
(20090903/ac-140)

Additionally, the system detects the battery but cannot read the charge
status and, as a result, it behaves as if the battery were fully
charged. The relevant dmesg lines seem to be the following:

[0.957281] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery present)
[2.224333] ata2.00: ACPI _SDD failed (AE 0x5)
[7.565299] ata2.00: ACPI _SDD failed (AE 0x5)
[7.565303] ata2.00: ACPI: failed the second time, disabled

I'm going to attach the full output of dmesg | grep ACPI.

I also tested this under 2.6.34, using the 2.6.34-020634rc7-generic
#020634rc7 package from the Kernel Team PPA. With this kernel, the ACPI
error is gone, but the AC adapter is always detected as plugged even if
unplugged. The battery related behavior is the same: that is, the
battery is detected but the battery charge status cannot be read.

I'm going to attach the full output of dmesg | grep ACPI under 2.6.34 as
well.

[Bug 578909] [NEW] acer_wmi blocks wlan rfkill status to disabled on Acer Aspire 4820TG

2010-05-11 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

NetworkManager always reports Wireless is disabled, and the acer_wmi
rfkill device in sysfs always reports state=0. Trying to write 1 to the
rfkill device state doesn't produce errors, but it doesn't produce any
results either, i.e. the state stays set at 0 and the wireless radio
stays off. Removing the acer_wmi module removes the rfkill device,
turning on the wireless radio.

I also tested this with upstream kernel using the
2.6.34-020634rc7-generic package from the Kernel Team PPA, with the same
results.

[Bug 525064] Re: ubuntuone-login crashed with SIGSEGV

2010-03-23 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
The problem can be worked around by killing the syncdaemon and then
editing your ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf file to comment out the
following two lines in the [bandwidth_throttling] section:

read_limit = 0
write_limit = 0

The newer version of the sync daemon doesn't like those limits to be
zero even when bandwidth throttling is disabled.

[Bug 335147] [NEW] Initial collection indexing uses too much CPU

2009-02-26 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

I just installed Banshee so I had to do a full indexing of my
collection. The process lasted for about 6 minutes and something, during
which CPU stayed mostly above 100%, and it went as high as
(approximately) 156%. CPU temperature went as high as 70.9C, which is
not within safe operation bounds for my CPU (a Pentium D 2.80 GHz
processor).

I don't have the Mirage plugin installed, and I have the Disable
features requiring Internet access preference ticked, so it didn't
download cover art for albums (from previous experience, downloading
cover art drives CPU usage, and core temperature, even higher).

My collection is composed of 6425 files.

I attach a screen log of the banshee run while indexing, although it
doesn't seem to show any interesting information. Please let me know if
you need any other information.

[Bug 323317] [NEW] Symbolic links are followed when emptying trash

2009-01-30 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When a symbolic link to a folder is moved to trash and then the trash is
emptied, files contained in the folder pointed to by the symbolic link
are deleted as well, which shouldn't happen.

To replicate:

1) Make a test folder, let's call it delete_me
2) Make a test file inside the delete_me folder, let's call it not
3) Create a symbolic link to the test folder
4) Move the symbolic link to trash
5) Empty trash

What happens:

The not file is gone.

Expected behaviour:

The not file is not deleted.

[Bug 321988] [NEW] Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 2.10 Keyboard: multimedia keys and other extended keys not working

2009-01-27 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

I use a Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop wireless keyboard
+ mouse combo. The keyboard has several multimedia and extended keys
(Documents, Images, Music, Mute, Play/Pause, Stop, Volume Up, Volume
Down, Rewind, Fast Forward, Multimedia, E-Mail, Web, Messenger,
Calculator, Logout, Stand-by). Most of those keys have an action
assigned via System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts, yet none of the
keys actually do anything when pressed (prior to fix of bug #311254,
they used to crash X when pressed).

I followed the steps outlined in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting and found that:
- xev reveals no keypress events
- input-events reveals no input events
- acpi_listen reveals no ACPI event.

I'm therefore filing this against the kernel as per the wiki page above.
I'm attaching the required information. Please, let me know if there is
any other information I can provide.

[Bug 318261] Re: ATI USB remote keypresses ignored

2009-01-18 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
I have a Microsoft Natural Desktop (wireless keyboard+mouse on USB). I
have the same issues described here, i.e. pressing multimedia and other
extended buttons used to crash X before bug 311254 was fixed and are
ignored altogether now.

Because the patch for bug 311254 covers both master=0x0 and mk=0x0 (the
latter was originally reported as bug 309785, and specifically related
to extended keys in multimedia keyboards, but was later duped agains
311254), it may well be that the sources for the null values are
separate and we have two different bugs here.

Please, let us know if we need to file a different bug for multimedia
keyboards, or it's better to handle these issues together.

[Bug 317848] [NEW] Thin clients won't boot after udev rule transition

2009-01-16 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ltspfs

After the transition of udev rules from /etc/udev/rules.d to
/lib/udev/rules.d, thin clients fail to boot with the following error
message:

udevd-event[2451]: mknod(/dev/pktcdvd/control, 020660, (10,62) failed:
Not a directory

I will now try to workaround this by manually copying the rules to
/lib/udev/rules.d inside the chroot and updating everything. Please, let
me know if there's any other information I can provide.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: ltspfs 0.5.8-1

[Bug 317848] Re: Thin clients won't boot after udev rule transition

2009-01-16 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
I tried to work around this issue with these steps:

1) copied the rules.d directory (and files within) from /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/udev
to /opt/ltsp/i386/lib/udev
2) rebuilt the ltsp image
3) updated the ltsp kernels

I performed the same steps for the amd64 chroot as I'm also testing with
amd64 clients.

The results are as follows: i386 clients display the usplash screen with
the floating progress bar, then hang on a black screen without any
message; the amd64 clients display the usplash sceen with the floating
progress bar, then the normal progress bar, then hang with the message
above.

In short, the behaviour of amd64 clients is unchanged from what they did
before the workaround, while the behaviour of i386 clients has worsened
(previously they behaved exactly as accounted above for amd64 clients).

[Bug 317488] [NEW] Crashes while opening the edit window

2009-01-15 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sabayon

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install sabayon
2) Create a profile
3) Edit it

Expected behaviour:

The edit window opens and lets me do its thing

Actual behaviour:

The edit window opens, various messages appear in its status bar, the
desktop background image appears in the edit window, then the edit
window closes and a popup appears telling that there was a problem and
asking to submit the log for the error (which I'm attaching).

I can replicate this 100% of the times, both with and without desktop
effects enabled.

[Bug 315373] Re: nautilus segfaults on insertion or removal of removable media

2009-01-11 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Yes, as soon as I instelled gvfs-dbgsym and libhal1-dbgsym the problem
went away. I guess it is because a bunch of -dbg packages were
automatically removed at the same time.

I removed the nautilus-dbgsym, gvfs-dbgsym and libhal1-dbgsym packages
that I installed to track this crash, and the problem stay fixed. I will
try and reinstall the -dbg packages and see if it comes back, but I
could use some guidance to do so. Do I just need to reinstall gnome-dbg?

[Bug 315983] Re: nautilus crashes and desktop icons disappears

2009-01-11 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
It looks like this crash is caused by something in compiz.desktop. I can
replicate the crash reliably with these commands:

mkdir ~/test
cp /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop ~/test/
nautilus ~/test

The other files seem ok, but I didn't do an exhaustive check (yet). But
files beginning with a*, b* and c*, except compiz.desktop, do not cause
a crash.

[Bug 315373] [NEW] nautilus segfaults on insertion or removal of removable media

2009-01-09 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Observed under nautilus 1:2.25.2-0ubuntu4 (Ubuntu Jaunty).

Inserting a removable medium of any kind, for example a CD or a USB key,
or turning on an external USB disk causes nautilus to crash with a
segfault. This is 100% reproducible. After the crash, nautilus is
usually, but not always, restarted automatically.

The only user visible symptom is desktop icons disappearing until
nautilus is restarted, automatically or manually. A segfault is recorded
in syslog, always with error 15 (I'm attaching a syslog fragment for a
crash caused by turning on an external USB disk which is always
connected to the PC, the segfault is on line 4). No apport notification
is generated.

This and other possibly related nautilus crashes are discussed in the
forum thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1033060 but
with, I fear, little useful information.

[Bug 259631] Re: Cannot open Private directory after a reboot when Automatic Login enabled

2008-11-17 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
The fix doesn't seem to work for me, i.e. I can't mount when I login
from SSH using public key auth. Also, I followed the instructions posted
above to create the symlinks in my unmounted Private directory, but the
files those symlinks should point to aren't there on my system.

For reference:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Private$ apt-cache policy ecryptfs-utils
ecryptfs-utils:
  Installed: 53-1ubuntu12
  Candidate: 53-1ubuntu12
  Version table:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Private$ ls -l /usr/share/ecryptfs-utils/
ls: cannot access /usr/share/ecryptfs-utils/: No such file or directory

(I just upgraded to Jaunty, but had already tested SSH access on
Intrepid, with intrepid-proposed enabled and all upgrades applied).

2008-10-03 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
@Dustin: Thanks a lot. I subscribed to Bug#277706 and agree to this bug
being resolved invalid.

As for your .ssh scheme, it's interesting indeed. Personally, I went the
lazy way and just symlinked everything but authorized_keys, but never
felt satisfied about that. I think I'm going to adopt your solution, and
I also think it should be promoted to new users of the ~/Private feature
(last time I checked, the setup instructions suggested to move the whole
.ssh directory).

Again, thanks!

[Bug 268014] [NEW] No way to mount the encrypted private directory when logging in over ssh using public key auth

2008-09-09 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

Observed with ecryptfs-untils 53-1ubuntu8.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Set up your box so that you can login via ssh using public key authentication
2) Set up an encrypted private folder for yourself
3) Logout locally so that the encrypted private folder is unmounted
4) Login remotely using your ssh key

What happens:
The encrypted private directory is not mounted automatically and can't be
mounted manually using ecryptfs-mount-private because the key has not been
unwrapped.

What should happen:
I understand why the above happens, and I appreciate that the ideal solution
(automount of the encrypted private folder in this case) may well not be
feasible because of security considerations, but I think that
ecryptfs-mount-private should really ask for your password instead of erroring
out if the key for the private folder has not been unwrapped at login time for
whatever reason.
I wouldn't even mind if I have to write something like ecryptfs-mount-private
--ask-password to have it happen, if that must be...
