wsm how do you know it is called too much?
Archaeopteryx just a guess because i see no throtteling code. autsync's
comment says it want to prevent event overflow, but it don't see bundling
messaes per account at
http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/components/activity/modules/autosync.js#249
which calls setProgress. you could verify with logging enabled,

[Bug 109943]

2012-12-05 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to :aceman from comment #24)
That query is not that good, from 21 bugs there are about 3 about this
problem. You should probably add 'CPU' as a needed word.

sorry, quite right. I was mainly being hasty/lazy and I didn't mean to
imply ALL are related. Looks to be about 1/3. Most relevant are bug
791535 and bug 742697

I was also being loose because a few bugs which don't cite CPU still are
likely impacted. for example bug 47024, bug 584643

Wayne can you come up with good STRs to get a progress bar repeatedly
without downloading new messages? So that we can debug the code.

bug 791535 is a different situation, but is reproducible.
I assume bug 584643 is also reproducible.

2012-12-01 Thread Vseerror

 I don't have one available.

Wil's problem happens without news, so I don't see this being related to
https://launchpad.net/bugs/704623

Wil no longer has the profile, so we have no testcase.
So closing incomplete.
But if problem recurs when using a current version, please reopen the bug.

Contrary to this being marked as FIXED - I doubt that.

now it is 2012 and I am using TB version 14.0 on win7 and ubuntu 12.04

 I am experiencing same problem:

Hiding message preview pane (pain) does not stick between sessions or system

[Bug 204550]

2012-08-28 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to Shi Sherebrin from comment #10)
In reply to Wayne's question (sorry for the delay in my reply), copying
tagged messages between folders on the server (IMAP) or from the server to a
local folder does not seem to cause loss of those tags any more.

for a different view, Bug 760856 - After moving local folder to IMAP
folder, tags of contained mail messages are lost

 However,
after reading [bug 378973] I tested and found that my local tags were lost
after deleting the containing folder's .msf file. Furthermore, when I look
at the message source (both on the server as well as local) I do not see any
X-Mozilla-Keys headers. I'd be happy to file this info under that bug, but
I saw that it was closed as resolved. I'm using v3.1.5, and could not find
a field showing which version fixes this issue so I have no way to tell what
 behaviour to expect.

 Thanks!

Shi, we would want you to confirm this behavior using a current version,
eg TB14/TB15. That said, I've seen such a bug report somewhere - can't
find it ATM. :( I see only an imap example - bug 392510

Actually, bug 78089 seems to have gone off on a tangent. This seems to be
wfm on Firefox 3.0 and above.

you mean 78089 is wfm not this bug, right? yes, the dialog wording has
since changed, but it's only partly fixed because the tab is still not
identified (this bug), as timeless suggests in bug 78089 comment 0.

identify the offending URL is surely a pain with lots of tabs, say 200+.

[Bug 810769]

2012-02-20 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to Jonathan Protzenko [:protz] from comment #11)
Do we have a bug on file for switching, UX-wise, to notification bars
instead of modal popups that shout in your face? :) (That would be a nice
subtask for the gsoc project proposal.)

Bug 255233 - Please make dialogs such as Do you want to send unsent messages?
modeless instead of modal
Bug 564751 - Annoying alert messages coming on top of every others applications

and (some duping needed here)...
Bug 288896 - eliminate modal dialog window, move to activity manager entry, to
avoid frequent interruptions by popup saying Cannot move messages to folder
name because another operation is in progress [pop3]
Bug 271589 - password dialog popup accumulate if they are not cancel at once
Bug 724598 - Enhance failure mode on POP3 accounts

and the big monster
Bug 476696 - Activity Manager: Poptarts

[Bug 691380]

2012-01-06 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to Charles from comment #145)
(In reply to Blake Winton [On vacation until Jan 9th] (:bwinton -
 Thunderbird UX) from comment #144)
I had a few exchanges with Iago about simplifying the Widget, so hopefully
I'll be able to post back here to try the new version soon and maybe some of
 your concerns will be addressed.

Well, it wasn't my decision, so I'm not particularly offended. (But I'm
also not convinced that only ever adding things, and never taking things
away is a path that will lead to good software.)

Definitely me neither... but this is not one of those times. I absolutely
love this addon, and can't imagine Thunderbird without it.

this is the case for many addons, for many people. Somewhere, there has
been discussion about the standards bar for acceptance of addons into
core. perhaps someone could post a link so discussion can continue in
that venue.

Ok, Blake, no offense, but you simply cannot be serious. It *does* make it
more 'minimal', in the sense that it takes up less *space* *and* allows the
user the freedom to put the searchbox wherever they want and be able to
filter messages without having another huge toolbar taking up more precious
screen real estate, which is *the* *whole* *point*.

I see that you and I are talking about two completely different things.

I don't care how much space we take up, if we get an easier to use program.

Sorry, again, no offense, but that comment just screams 'I know nothing
 about *good* UI design.

I suspect you take blake too literally, as we realistically aren't
talking about gobs of space. Regardless, I don't see it implying
anything about knowledge, but that the goals are different.

Then you must have never bothered to read the opening comment. Too bad,
because the loss of the movable search box was a huge blow for many, many
  people.

Perhaps it was, but I haven't heard that many people complaining about it.
(Maybe because Iago's add-on is satisfying their needs?)

Well there was a lot of noise on mozillazine and other sites when this
happened, but it was a long time ago (3.1 I believe), so sure, the noise has
died down because people either found the addon, or modified their behavior,
but I also distinctly recall a lot of people saying they switched email
clients (it was like a 'last straw' kind of thing).

good or bad, change always brings these types of comments.

FWIW, we see very few complaints or suggestions in getsatisfaction about
global search - even though there is significant room for improvement,
as the aforementioned bug lists illustrate.

I understand that not everyone likes changes we make, but I still haven't
been convinced that the benefit of this would outweigh the cost.

Well, in contrast, I honestly don't see the 'cost' in providing users the
 *option*.

there is *always* cost. more code always costs.

ATM I am not in a position to comment further about specific merits of the
addon although generally like it, even though I am using it on one of my PCS,
so please don't take that as a criticism.

[Bug 691380]

2011-12-23 Thread Vseerror
Surprisingly I'm pretty much liking the addon. One nit is if I filter on
X in tab A and then on Y in tab B, that Y is shown in tab A when I go
back to A. Even though A is still filtered on X.

That said, this bug seems to have gone off the rails, starting in
comment 115 - 117, and 124. Let me point out that *Blake didn't start
this*, and the direction wasn't brought back in focus by anyone back
then, until ~comment 129, that the addon doesn't focus on what you
(Charles) want.

STM the current addon focused on reunification and it's conversation
should probably go in a different bug. Not that it will change the
direction of the addon - which seems clear enough to me - but it may
help get this bug back on topic. How quickly it progresses is a
different matter.

[Bug 691380]

2011-12-23 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to Charles from comment #142)
(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #141)
Surprisingly I'm pretty much liking the addon. One nit is if I filter on X
in tab A and then on Y in tab B, that Y is shown in tab A when I go back to
  A. Even though A is still filtered on X.

Well, again, since I don't use tabs, I would never have encountered those
issues... most likely Iago can fix them though if you report it to him...

That said, this bug seems to have gone off the rails, starting in comment
115 - 117, and 124. Let me point out that *Blake didn't start this*, and the
direction wasn't brought back in focus by anyone back then, until ~comment
129, that the addon doesn't focus on what you (Charles) want.

Not sure what you mean... the addon totally fulfills this bug request. We -
users - are often told that an Addon is a good way to get a feature
implemented, because then the code is already written, and thus, the Unified
 Search Addon was born.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding. because
a) I said nothing about not doing an addon, and
b) your bug summary says nothing about reunification

STM the current addon focused on reunification

No, initially, the Addon focused precisely on fulfilling my original
request, as hammered out in the mockups so artfully done by Thomas D. The
'unification' aspect (unifying the Global Search etc) was added
 *afterwards*...

and it's conversation should probably go in a different bug. Not that it
  will
change the direction of the addon - which seems clear enough to me - but it
may help get this bug back on topic. How quickly it progresses is a
  different
  matter.

Again, I don't follow. This addon *totally* fulfills my request, so please I
wish you guys would stop telling me that it doesn't - I should know, I made
it, and am using (and now totally dependent on), and that is why I'm now
asking for the Unified Search addon to be incorporated into the core code
(since that would be the last step in fulfilling this bug request).

then apparently I have goofed, and am happy to say so. it would help
please to change your bug title/summary so one doesn't have to read 100+
comments to understand the basics of the bug, and get summarily blasted
when we make seemingly useless comments. maybe even resummarize the
goal. Bear in mind, if you conflate multiple goals, the patch is much
more complex, and less likely to be accepted into core - addon or no
addon.

big kudos to Iago and all for working to improve Tbird.
W.

[Bug 491170]

2011-03-29 Thread Vseerror
cs, and others

Do you still see this problem when using version 3.1 or newer?

FWIW, Nex and Steve do not.

(In reply to comment #10)
*** Bug 533398 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

copied from cs' bug above...

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a (ideally slow) IMAP folder
2. Click a random message and wait for it to load and display.
3. Click a conversation node in the message list, causing the display to show
the conversation overview
4. Now click a different (not previously loaded) random message and wait for it
to load.
Actual Results:
The immediate response of the display is to show the previous (wrong) message,
until the new message is loaded and replaces the old one.

probably better from a UI point of view is Bug 286888 - Always make
compacting folders automatic, with no UI

Bryan indicated in bug 236922 comment 7 that he liked the idea of doing
Bug 286888.

bienvenu, how do you feel about the choice between this bug and Bug
286888?

preferable to have one or both of
bug 437657 increase autocompact threshold mail.purge_threshhold
bug 439089 Auto compact on idle time with better threshold
before implementing this or bug 286888 (though not strictly dependent)

2010-11-12 Thread Vseerror
I would prefer to discuss this out of band, because it's not related to
the bug, but my interest in contacting you was to determine your level
of interest, which of the ldap bugs you think are most important, and to
what extent you would be able to help moving some of them forward
(testing, etc)?

And, as implied by my earlier question, there could be more progress if
we sought additional users/enterprises who were interested in helping
sort through the issues.

[Bug 38054]

2010-11-02 Thread Vseerror
(In reply to comment #39)
I just realized that Thunderbird doesn't scroll the message list at all. It
seems to repopulate the content of the message list pane line-wise on
mousewheel turn or on moving the thumb in the slider, which imitates scrolling
 to some extent.

this is based on observation only?
or an examination of the code (static or trace while running)?
or a log?

I'll look into profiling if it becomes definitely required, but I suspect that
the root of the problem is this strange way TB simulates scrolling in the
 message list pane.

I think it's still needed
