Wolfgang Hahnl, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available (3.19-rc6) from the very top line at the top of the page (the
release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the

It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot
into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to
test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel
version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel,
please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black
pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report
 description:

Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

[Bug 1308474] Re: CPU-intensive processes killed by OS

2014-04-16 Thread Wolfgang Jansen
apport information

** Description changed:

When testing some algorithm I ran the test program several times with
different parameters. It was to be expected that each run takes about
four hours, and to utilize the capacities of my computer (4 CPUs) I
started the program 4 times running in parallel and with lowered
priority (the latter to be able to do meanwhile something else on the
computer). All four processes ran in parallel for a few minutes but
then two of them were killed with the error message:

  Command terminated by signal 9
  [1] Exit 137/usr/bin/time -f '%U+%S sec, avg %Kk max %Mk
memory, major %F minor %R faults, %I+%O i/o' ./testu01long -d9689 -b3
cat9689.tub

Here, /usr/bin/time ... is the command I launched for the first
process, the second error message was quite similar, now for the second
process. The process started first ran about 6 minutes, the second about
14 minutes, so the TERM signals have been issued at different times (the
processes had been started within one minute). The two other processes
continued without problems. The point is that I did NOT issue a TERM
signal to the processes, I conclude that the OS issued the TERM signals.
The effect can be repeated to some extend: if another CPU-intensive
process is started (e.g. a lengthy compilation) then an already running
CPU-intensive process may be killed, if so then the one first started.

When the killed program had been relaunched with the same parameters but
without concurrency of other CPU-intensive processes (e.g. only editing,
reading e-mails running in parallel) then all things were fine, so the
kill is really not caused by the program. The program does not use
external devices and even no I/O except for writing a summary to stdout
at program end (i.e. not when the processes were killed).

The question is, why have the processes been killed? Is the OS unable to
manage as many running processes?
I consider this a bug in the OS, part process management.
The bug implies that the computer can be used for light weight tasks only.

  With regards
  Dr. Wolfgang Jansen

[Bug 1308474] [NEW] CPU-intensive processes killed by OS

2014-04-16 Thread Wolfgang Jansen
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1306897] Re: xbmc with vdpau crashes on stop

2014-04-14 Thread Wolfgang Schupp
@mlankhorst: If I'm interpreting your comment correctly, this bug will not be
fixed for trusty final?
This would be a real bummer and make trusty unusable for htpc users on AMD
hardware, while it otherwise provides a nearly perfect basis.

Not sure why opening a duplicate of this bug would make sense. I have
the same chipset and exactly the same issues as the reporter.

If you still want me to open a new bug, I can ofc do that.

[Bug 1124250] Re: Partially incorrect uid mapping with nfs4/idmapd/ldap-auth

2013-08-30 Thread Wolfgang Walter
Have a look into /proc/key-users to see if user root reaches its quotas:

0: 1029 1028/1028 10/100 2345/2

means that root uses 1022 from 1 possible an uses 2345 bytes from
maximum 2.

You may have to encrease both. For each user and group you should
increase it by one. So if you 1000 users and 1000 groups you should root
allow more than 2000 keys (and enough memory for that).

Try

echo 40 /proc/sys/kernel/keys/root_maxbytes
echo 1 /proc/sys/kernel/keys/root_maxkeys

and see if this fixes the problem for you.

[Bug 1020048] Re: after certain time printing to cups stops working

2013-07-18 Thread Wolfgang Walter
The fix in http://www.cups.org/str.php?L4187 is not complete. It misses
the case where the server terminates the connection. recv() then does
not return with an error but returns 0 (EOF). The last case is missed.

Here is a modified patch (to apply instead that one of L4187) which
solves the issue:

[Bug 1000470] Re: Extra space is added and backslash is removed under the 'find' command

/etc/bash_completion.d/acroread.sh -
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Shell/acroread_tab. After removing the
symbolic link and starting a new bash shell, things were back to normal.
