[Bug 1616695] Re: Bluetooth signal is unusably poor
This was filed nearly 7 months ago, just writing in to confirm that I've got the same machine running the same distro with the latest updates and the issue persists. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1616695 Title: Bluetooth signal is unusably poor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/1616695/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1616695] [NEW] Bluetooth signal is unusably poor
Public bug reported: Brand new Macbook Pro 12,1. Brand new Ubuntu 16.04 install (from scratch). In MacOS the machine can connect to my bluetooth speaker from across the room and play A2DP no trouble at all. In Ubuntu 16.04 I have to literally hold up the macbook 1 inch away from the speaker to get it to connect and play, and even then it's a bit choppy. Turning off Wifi seems to help a bit, which leads me to think this is some kind of transmit power issue. Syslog is chock full of warnings about skipping audio: Aug 24 16:22:32 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 206099 us (= 36352 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:32 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 382089 us (= 67400 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:33 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 394108 us (= 69520 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:33 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 328125 us (= 57880 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:33 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 59087 us (= 10420 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:33 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 14036 us (= 2472 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:34 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 247134 us (= 43592 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:34 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 342190 us (= 60360 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:34 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 172035 us (= 30344 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:35 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 803140 us (= 141672 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:36 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 651085 us (= 114848 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:36 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 202043 us (= 35640 bytes) in audio stream Aug 24 16:22:36 badassm pulseaudio[4655]: [bluetooth] module-bluez5-device.c: Skipping 265112 us (= 46764 bytes) in audio stream $ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS" $ uname -a Linux badassm 4.4.0-34-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 27 16:06:39 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05ac:8406 Apple, Inc. I'm also running into this issue on two of my machines. Both are Asus X53U laptops running almost 100% stock versions of Ubuntu 12.04. I've installed nothing but chrome and gnome-panel on the machines. This manifests as users not being able to login using lightdm to the machines. I am as well, even with a fixed driver. Mine happens most often when I close my lid, either it has to do with the screensaver or screen blanking im not sure. @Matt Do you have any idea then why when I boot into the new kernel theres no r8192 module in use and wifi doesn't work (i.e. it's not built in)? -- r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585938] Re: r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic
@Andy -- I'm confused how this should work. This whole time we've been talking about an out-of-tree module. Does the kernel you posted contain that module built in somehow? When I boot into that kernel I don't actually get wifi access at all unless I modprobe one of the version of the r8192 module I have lying around. -- r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585938] Re: r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic
I tried using the new kernel: zgoldb...@netglider:~/Downloads$ uname -a Linux netglider 2.6.32-24-generic #38lp585938v201007051739 SMP Mon Jul 5 16:41:46 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux zgoldb...@netglider:~/Downloads$ /sbin/iwpriv.old -a crash ;(. I'm a bit confused as to how this was supposed to work. I was under the impression that this driver was not upstream? I've been using r8192se as a module this whole time? I'm going to take a quick look at the tarball that matt linked above and see if I can get that to build. -- r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585938] Re: r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic
I can, however, confirm that by using the tarball that Matt attached the driver does not crash with iwpriv -a -- r8192se_pci + powertop (iwpriv -a) = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic
1) I can confirm everything Matt has said so far on my machine. iwpriv -a is definitely the cause of the problem 2) Obviously I cant copy paste so good from a non-X vt on a machine that has had a kernel panic. I took a photo however (attached) 3) It looks like it crashes on an ioctl (surprise, surprise). Sadly the exact ioctl isnt there? It shows me ioctl(0x8bec) which looks like memory somehow got corrupted and its passing a bad ioctl? There is another suspicious ioctl before the crash without a macro mapping, 0x8be5. I'm going to try playing with some things, such as: making iwpriv a noop by converting to a bash script and seeing if that makes the system stable. Snooping around with iwpriv a bit more, maybe try some gdb break points, see if I can narrow this down further and come up with a patch (to either iwpriv or the driver) ** Attachment added: 20100703_002.jpg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51353528/20100703_002.jpg -- [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic
(For all the people who found this thread by googling) ### REALLY HACKY SOLUTION WHICH WILL (hopefully) ENABLE YOU TO USE r8192 WITHOUT CRASHING IN LINUX ### The usual disclaimer about these kinds of hacks applies -- I am not responsible yada yada, do this at your own risk yada yada, worked for me, not guaranteed to work for you yada yada. Open a terminal (On Ubuntu 10.04 aka Lucid Lynx: Applications Menu - system tools - terminal) 1) sudo mv /sbin/iwpriv /sbin/iwpriv.old 2) sudo echo '#!/bin/bash' /sbin/iwpriv 3) sudo chmod +x /sbin/iwpriv NOTES: 1) I did this on my machine, and was still able to connect to and use wifi normally. 2) Obviously this will likely break any application which depends on the iwpriv command, and also makes iwpriv unsable for you on the command line (unless you use iwpriv.old) 3) Powertop now runs fine without crashing with wifi enabled and running 4) Other applications may still do the same thing as iwpriv which can cause the crash. This fix does *NOT* address the root cause of the problem. I'm still going to look for a real fix for the underlying problem with the driver. -- [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 592745] Re: kernel panic - kernel stack corrupted
I've also tried the newer version (v17) which still seems to crash. I saw somebody using ndiswrapper somewhere, I havn't tried that yet. Do you think theres any chance of making progress on this guy or should I relegate this netbook to being wireless-less for quiet a while ;( What's funny is that when I first got this machine (~2months ago) it worked fine on wifi. There must have been some update lately which introduced the kernel call that triggers the driver bug (the same thing powertop seems to trigger) or maybe there was an updated kernel introduced which causes bad behavior. Any ideas on how to get older lucid kernels to try (like, the one from launch day)? I may also try fedora 13, just to see if maybe theres something ubuntu specific that breaks things. -- kernel panic - kernel stack corrupted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
